Not surprised I'm the only one who voted for Dynasty Warriors 6. I know most people probably don't care for that series anymore, but as a huge fan of the series, that game has to be the absolute best. I spent so much damn time on that game, and enjoyed every second of it, so it had to be on my list. Wait...how did the points work again? Does 15 only equal 1 point or 3 points? Maybe someone else did appreciate it!
From the little bit I played, the Saints Row games were fun. The only one that had enough substance to hook me was 2, and I never had enough time to properly play it through. I rented it at the same time I rented some other game I deemed more important. Never rent more than one game for only a few days if you can't make the time.

Titles get points according to where they fell on your list. 1st gets 15, while 15th gets 1. Then a title gets 2 points per list it appears on. It usually helps break up some ties, but with only 16 lists we will have a few tied spots.
Atty
September 15th, 2014, 8:59 AM
2 points per list they appear on is brilliant.
I'll talk about it later, but the most I tasked on this was whether to have Mass Effect or Mass Effect 3 in what spot. I kept swapping them (they're not directly right next to each other) and ended with the original higher but thinking the FINAL version of 3 (all the DLC and fixed endings) is the superior game. The complete final version of ME3 I'd hold against anything on the list but it's hard to rank as a standalone as enjoyment is largely dependent on how it plays off what you did in the previous two games. It's a strange dynamic that I can't think of any other game really having. ME2 carried on your save/character but that had the epic start that would let new players enter the work. 3 is like if a Metroid game just said GO at the start and you had all your upgrades and what you did previously changed the game mightily.

Never played any of the Saints Row games. I think I've got 3 and 4 on PS+ (or is it 2 & 3?). Might give them a go before I upgrade.
Was I the only person who voted for Sleeping Dogs then? I know it is not as polished as GTA but I had a lot of fun with that game.
EDIT - I was the only person who voted for it then.
Dreyski

Whoops - thought I voted for sleeping dogs, but must have forgotten about it as I deleted it after getting the platinum medal, and used my games list rather than my trophy list.
Anyway - Saints Row the 3rd - like a GTA with everything turned up to 11. Only complaint is the difficulty on some of the side missions.

One thing that I liked with Saints Row 2 compared to GTA IV and V was it really felt like it picked up the ball that Rockstar dropped with the loss of the campiness and with no progression of the aspects they introduced in San Andreas. SR2 had the customization and character-building and most importantly for me, the territory system that was one of my favorite parts of San Andreas. I really wish I put more time into that game. Probably would have made my list if I bothered to play it more.
The_Mike
September 15th, 2014, 5:06 PM
Bugger, I don't think I put Saints Row 3 on my list because I played it only on the PC, but it was a blast. I felt that it was basically the proper sequel to San Andreas, going further with all the mad and cool stuff from the GTA games while GTA got all stuffy. I own a bloody tower block and can fly a jet off my penthouse patio, land in a park miles away and smack some gangs to death with a giant purple dildo. What's not to like? Being a grumpy gamer, it's a bit surprising that something so silly would appeal to me, but it always put a smile on my face by just being a fun, madcap sandbox.

Saints Row 3 was a great companion for me over a very bleak christmas. I played the arse off of it, alongside Skyrim, and it never stopped being fun*. I hadn't played Saints Row 2, which some people hold more dear, so a lot of it possibly seemed newer to me. Saints Row 4 adds the superpowers and feels too much like the retread that it is. 3 was the perfect storm for me. That was actually a great christmas looking back.
*until the very disappointing DLC. One of these days I'll heed my own lesson and never buy DLC again. It's either rubbish or just doesn't add on to the game properly.

I never got into Saints Row 3. I played it for about ten hours but always found it a bit dull.
Sleeping dogs was great but it didn't make my top fifteen.
Forza 2 was my vote. I spend hundreds of hours playing that. It was the first driving sim I had which featured Ferrari's; the 360 Modena and the F40 were great fun.

I really tried to put this higher myself, but the games this generation were so good. I played Borderlands 2 until my group moved on from it. It is a great game to screw about with you friends, but it was just okay as a single player experience imo. The Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage was the best piece of DLC I've played on anything thus far. I laughed at so many of the little quips here and there from Torgue. The missions were fun, and I blazed through it twice.
here was my final list
1. Call of Duty: Modern warfare 2
2. The Last of Us

it is better in co-op but i like doing the occassional challenge runs
1 life to live ( if you character dies it gets deleted ) and scavenger runs ( cant use gun vendors or buy ammo everything must be looted )

I played through it once but I ground to a halt fighting Madame Von Bartelsby the second time round. 1 life to life sounds bloody mental (maybe better if you're the siren or ninja). Love the randomness of some of the guns that pop up, though, and the look of the graphics that convey so much of the life of Pandora.

For about 30 seconds I was thinking how Infamous 2 was lower than I expected, but then I realised that it was Playstation only. Then I decided it should have been higher regardless.
Orange box is also lower than I thought, given most people's Portal love. 5 games of such quality is stunning value, especially becuase I picked it up second hand for £10. Still have to play episode 1 and 2, mind.

Skyward Sword is so great and underrated/overlooked. I do fear that it will become a forgotten gem as its controls are so Wii specific that it'll be harder to go back to on future console. Like, they won't be able to put it on all kinds of formats for re-re-release like they did with Ocarina without completely altering the controls. It does a lot of cool little things in the story that apply to the Zelda mythos as a whole and I loved the redressing of environments throughout the game, with the structure making each area like a dungeon on its own.
One of my favorite games.

Yeah, the survival viewer and camo index are tricky to get the hang of and can make the game very stop-start. Once you get the hang of it, it's hardly noticable. I hardly ever bother with camo/facepaint now, apart from the COBRA/Volgin/Boss fights.

i didn't even get to a place where any of that was a factor. i just couldn't get a handle on the actual movement and combat controls, and the camera. everything felt so clunky, trying to shoot one enemy felt like the biggest chore in the world cause i didn't know how to properly aim and the button configuration didn't feel natural, and i felt like the camera was working against me. it just didn't provide enough of a fun experience for me to push through that early part, which is in contrast to something like shadow of the colossus, where when i first started that, i had some difficulty figuring out the mechanics and obviously how to take down the enemies, but the learning curve/process was fun.

Try the peace Walker game. It has better controls, but worse graphics. It didn't make the console leap like its PS2 brethren. It might be top 2 or 3 in the whole series.

MGS 4 was an excellent game. Not the best in the series, but it was such a fitting climax to the Solid Snake anthology. I could have done with a bit more action, and the game loses points for not being as appealing to people who haven't played the series before it, but the mechanics of the game were top-notch. I loved the improvement on the crawling and the camo system. It was definitely a strong reason to own a PS4 in the first few years.

I would say I'm surprised Mortal Kombat didn't make the list, but then again I don't think fighting games are too popular on these boards. From a mechanics standpoint, it was the best game in the whole series, and a triumphant return to quality. I think it beat out Street Figter IV and MVC 3, and I always preferred those games over MK. Shame it didn't make the cut here.
Then again, I never got around to playing any of the Bioshocks except for about an hour of the first one, so people might chastise me for not having this on my list. It's a part of large back catalog to keep me entertained for ages.

Ni No Kuni is very slow, and has a very awkward battle system. It's a shame because I was expecting something like Dragon Quest, but it's story is glacial in comparison and it's a weird real time fighting system that never felt enjoyable, and that's before AI partners get involved and make a mess.

You can call me crazy to put this at the top of my list. I profess myself as someone who generally doesn't like shooters too. This game hooked me so bad. I've never had so many gaming laughs with friends, or damned frustrating moments when getting taken out like a bitch. The multiplayer was so balanced, and and done so well. The maps were some so great, and now I can't say that I hate any of them. Derail is probably my least favorite, but it allows for some of the best strategical planning if you have an attentive group. The DLC packs were pretty damned good too. I ended up getting Black Ops and MW3, but they didn't hold a candle to the fun I had on this game.

New Vegas is way better than fallout 3.
I came here to post this.
The mod that adds color to the overworld is a must as it adds to the game imo. The pale green hue was depressing though in fairness I'm sure that was intentional/the idea.
Fallout 3 also "felt" like a bigger game than New Vegas, but that might just be a figment of my imagination.

I think New Vegas is probably the better game all-around, but Fallout 3 is something special, and in a way, I kind of prefer the atmosphere of that game more. Maybe it's just the "nostalgia" of it. Really, though, trying to argue which one is better is unnecessary; they are both amazing. With that in mind, it's fitting that they ranked right next to each other. I'm honestly surprised neither broke the Top 5.

New Vegas is a better game than Fallout 3, but I let my heart rule. Fallout 3 was the reason I bought into the console and I dug into it for weeks. New Vegas felt like a retread at first, but when you dig into it there's far, far more beneath the surface than what was in 3.

Arkham Asylum is so amazing. I really wish, in an odd way, that I'd never seen the gameplay done so much better in City as it makes it difficult to go back. With a better boss fight at the end and City gameplay, this would probably have topped my list.
With Wii U not getting Arkham Knight, I think they should port Asylum to the system with the City controls and a tweaked final boss fight. It wouldn't be a huge project and would get a ton of love from the Wii U audience. Really, one of the best games I've ever played and I fear it could be one that gets a bit lost to time. The Scarecrow bits are among my favorite ever in gaming. Having third degree burns and being on a ton of pain pills when it came out made it extra special. The bit with Gordon dragging away was blowing my mind.
Beefy
October 9th, 2014, 5:14 AM
I don't agree really - every time I replay both games (once each a year I'd guess) it is City which comes off worst and it is Asylum's tighter gameplay which really shines through.
Asylum is free on PS+ this month so it'#ll be interesting to see how well received it is by people who have only played City up until now.

Same here.
I put a ludicrous number of hours into Skyrim, basically bending the world to my will and constructing myself an enjoyable narrative as a character who got a bunch of daedric artefacts together, killed some powerful dragons and ascended to godhood, justifying the various mods of enormous castles and fancy homes and so on. It's a very enjoyable sandbox, but as time went on I realised there were some pretty big flaws that hurt immersion. If it weren't so pretty and plain big it could be easy to find it a bit dull. Dungeon crawling became a massive chore because no matter how high your level and how great your equipment, you've got to pump ten arrows into every bloody draugr, and there's about fifty of them in every dungeon. The NPCs were largely lifeless, unless they were written to seriously stand out like Cicero, and while some quests were well written a lot of it seemed to just be following a shiny green triangle and killing everything on the way. You could turn the HUD off but then you have no idea where to go to do anything because there are no directions, just fetch-quests dumped plainly in your log. It is a great foundation and a very well realised world but the actual game part, once you mine all you can out of it, turns out to be pretty shallow.
I probably shouldn't have a laundry list of things to complain about in a game I paid $60 for and got well over 200 hours of enjoyment from, but there it is. It could've been better, and the direction ESO went doesn't fill me with confidence that this type of game is going to be built upon in the future in anything but graphics.

The controls were so much more fluid than in Asylum. Not just as far as free flow in combat but with gliding and flying around town. Once I figured out the dive bomb and rise thing, I'd spend so much time just flying around the City. So much fun.

I tried the PacMan demo and enjoyed it but have never seen it at a price where it has felt worth the plunge. Like NBA Jam actually. They need to do something about still charging full price for years old PSN games.
And with that Pac-Man Championship Edition DX goes into the new PSN sale in the Europe region. I'm going to pick it up for £4.99 this afternoon.

I prefer the campaign in Asylum, but City having Catwoman/Robin/Nightwing sold me on the challenge rooms in City.
I think that the combat got a little overcomplicated in City, with too many button combos. That and I got stuck for an hour because I completely forgot about sliding under doors and the game didn't prompt me.

The Batman games(Asylum in particular) looked fantastic. Really, the only reason I have yet to play them is time and the fact that my modern gen back catalog is so behind. These games are definitely at the top of the list though.
Really curious to see what the Top 5 will be. Have we seen any of the Uncharted's rank yet?

I put Asylum in today and it's still gorgeous. Not really sure how to describe it, but the textures/shadows/details are terrific. And it sets the vibe for it so well in the opening scene.

Portal 2, The Last of Us, an Uncharted, GTA 5 and Red Dead will probably make out the top five.

That's why I had "an Uncharted" ;)
Before the edit, I was assuming GTA 4 and Fallout 3 as potential top fives.
On the subject of GTA, Rockstar had a PSN sale a month back and now I'm hooked on San Andreas for the first time in a decade. Great use of three dollars. Regret that I didn't download IV for $4.99 and V for $29.99 at the same time.

I will say that Uncharted 2 was the first game on PS3 that made me feel like I needed to own the console. MSG4 is the reason I got the console, but UC2 was the reason I had to have a PS3. Such a great game. Popcorn action adventure flick made into a game, and made so well.

This is the perfect description. I got the MGS 4 PS3 on the day it came out but, as great as that game was, it didn't shake the regret of not having Mass Effect or Halo (had I gone with the 360 at the time.) Uncharted 2 was the game that made the statement to me that I NEEDED to have a PS3.
While the intro is the obvious thing to jump out at the player with how it drops you right in, the stage I'd use to show how well the game is made is the tank stage. It mixes frantic platforming to get to RPGs, combat and all the elements so well. You can go all Rambo and mow everyone down and get to the finish or you can be a real man and speed platform from RPG to RPG to fuck that tank up. Either way plays just as well as the other.

I loved this game. I've not really been interested in your AAA stuff since the PS3 generation, but this felt like AAA and it felt like next-gen (at the time), and was just a blast at the same time. A real game, fun through and through, and pretty creative much of the time.

Uncharted 2 was one of the rare games to receive the "Oh, it's morning?" honor from me. On this list, I think it only happened with this and the Arkhams, but it says a lot for a game when I just keep thinking "one more level" and suddenly notice that it's morning and that I've beaten it. I get distracted so easily that it makes me respect a game all the more when I don't wander off and just can't stop.
I know it also happen with Arkham City and it may have happened with Asylum, but I was too hopped up the first time to know. Other than those, I'd have to go back to KOTOR for an example of this but, even then, that was over a couple days the first time and not one sitting where I just couldn't stop until I got enough. I played Uncharted 2 before the first game, so it hit morning, I beat it and went and got Uncharted 1. That's how great this game is.

I only played it recently when putting together this list and can see why it is so highly regarded. It is such a step-up from the first game which, whilst good, felt very samey and could have done with being trimmed a fair bit. Uncharted 2 is obviously longer but there's so many changes in setting and the gameplay is mixed up terrifically. I'll definitely replay it at some point.

Portal 2 is one of my favorite multiplayer experiences of this generation. Experiencing it for your first time is so much better with someone else who is also experiencing it for their first time. The disparity is weird. If you know the puzzles then you want to solve them, but you also want the new person to experience the game. Just a great, and well done co-op mode.

There were a couple of moments in the single player that frustrated me. Other than that yes I wouldn't change a thing. If I had taken this method to making my list I would have had Journey and Mario Galaxy battling for my top spot. I really had to take into account what games not only captured my attention, but the games that I played the most.

This could be very true. I've still just played it the one time but I can't think of a game that had such an impact on me in a single play. I think, over time, this will be one of those games people appreciate more and more. Getting it on next gen right away was a brilliant move as it'll let more people experience it over time. Not just how emotionally gripping the game was, but it had basically perfect controls. Everything felt perfect. It's like Silent Hill 2 if that game didn't control like a rusty asshole.

Guess we should talk about GTA V. It is very good. When I got it I got a solid three weeks of enjoyment out of fucking around and doing the odd mission and was still only about 70% through the story. I didn't enjoy the Los Santos setting very much although I did enjoy some of the areas in the countryside and the small towns. Flying planes and helecopters was fun and the return of things like rampages was long over due.
Trouble was that after I'd played Online for a week and got bored of that I had no inclination at all to return to the single player as the story hadn't connected with me at all. Whilst the mechanic of switching between three characters actually worked very well I thought it really harmed the narrative and by the end of the game I had three characters I'd not made a connection with - which was a stark contrast with both RDR and GTA IV both of which built main and sub-characters up to the point where you're bothered by the very bleak endings of both of those games.
I think it's a marvel in sandbox gaming but I coundn't in all honesty put it in my top five (I had it 8th) and I think it is very telling that not a single person had it as #1 in their lists.

GTA V just barely rounded out my Top 10 at #8, just above MGS4 and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It was an excellent game that I had a blast with. As Beefy said, it was quite a triumph in sandbox play, if only for the sheer scale of it, and I personally enjoy the story and the narrative turns it takes, but I really don't connect with any of the characters except for Trevor, who would seem the worst of the three but in my opinion is the most sympathetic. You understand why he's so fucked in the head and want to see him fix himself, though he never truly does. Even so, he has more of a moral code than the other two despite being a homicidal lunatic. I still enjoyed the ride that the story was from an entertainment aspect, but it doesn't come close to pulling you in the same way San Andreas or GTA IV does, and isn't so overt with its levity like Vice City is.
Online was fun for someone who usually doesn't play online games, but the repetition became very apparent, and with the lack of heists or any real updates to the gameplay(I think we're STILL waiting on heists), it doesn't help the game to much. I'm really interested to see what they do with VI, or if they have any plans for DLC ever(which doesn't seem to be inthe cards), but I'm concerned that they'll fix the problems with this one and create new ones as they did with the transition into this game.

Not looking to disagree with you but I am interested. Can you give some examples of what you mean (in either Last of Us or Uncharted)?I could put on a beret and write about this for ages, but I first felt this in Uncharted 2. The scene where you wake up in the village and slowly walk through it with the child and the ox, it came along side the high quality animation and acting of the cutscenes. So I would find myself 'role-playing' in a way, trying to make my motions smooth and natural so you didn't have this natural scene spoiled by Nathan Drake sprinting around running into walls. Wankers call this ludonarrative dissonance, a lot of people complain about it in GTA but I solve that just by ignoring the cutscenes, really.
The Last of Us has excellent storytelling in it's cutscenes, so whenever I spend a couple of minutes picking up and putting down a plank in the wrong place, or Ellie runs out in front of a clicker, it sticks out more like a sore thumb. It almost seems a silly complaint - that your cutscenes have done such a good job of establishing the mood, that instead of a player, I start to feel like an actor on a set, and I want the fights I get into to 'flow' cinematically too. So when something 'gamey' happens in a fight, I feel I've spoiled the mood.
P.S. TLOU and RDR have one thing in common here, I get very sqeamish when I control a horse in a game, and I hated when I would accidentally ride one over an edge in RDR.

I've got in a fight about this here before, but 2 being the best is the norm. 2 was right place, right time and more fun than the first. 3 did not improve on 2, and it bears out that it was made by a B team while they were working on TLOU. It didn't introduce anything that felt new so it didn't grab attention.
There's a bit at the start of 3 where Drake says something like "Ugh, I have to do even more climbing?" and I was like I feel you buddy.

First run was on PS3 so this forces me to replay properly.
Such a great game. As far as the differences between the PS3/360 versions, I really couldn't tell you any off hand. Generally games on the 360 tend to look better, but it's been years since I played the PS3 version so I couldn't say if that's the case here.
