What are the best games that have ever appeared on a Nintendo System? We will find out how the Rajah people feel. This will span all systems from home console to the handhelds. You will have until June 2nd after Raw to submit your list of up to 20 titles(shorter if you feel like) to me via Personal Message. Please put the game, and the system it appeared on. this will help me keep track of things. Do not feel like you can't submit a list because you didn't play enough of one system or another. Your opinion matters here. All titles must be release before 2014! Have fun.

EARLY QUESTIONS:

How will remakes/reissues work? Like, if I put Wind Waker HD will it count as Wind Waker? Same for the Mario 1-3 remakes in Mario All-Stars. Can I count Mario All-Stars + World as one?

If it is a re-release or an HD release they will be added together (Super Mario World & Super mario advanced 2) will be treated as the same. However compilations will be treated as a different game. So Mario All-Stars, Williams Greatest Hits Vol1, Namco Greatest Hits, etc...

I turned in a strange list, by comparison to probably most. I never had a Super Nintendo, N64, or GameCube. Never owned a Gameboy, DS, or WiiU, so my game list will consist of NES and Wii games...along with the games I played on my friends' consoles. I had a Genesis and Playstation rather than the Nintendo's.

Also, I was never a fan of Zelda or Final Fantasy, so I didn't put one of them on my list.

On a side note, completely unrelated to Nintendo. I went to Goodwill today, and they had like a dozen Atari 2600 games for sale, 50 cents each. I almost bought them just for the hell of it. They had Pacman, ET, Pitfall, and some other games I don't remember.

And that is how Mario All-Stars will take care of itself. It only just made the top 30 Super Nintendo games (https://forums.rajah.com/showthread.php?145678-The-30-Best-SNES-Games-(List-Reveal)) list. If you don't want it on the list don't vote for it, but it is a viable title for submission.

I want to give a shout out to the Metriod Prime series. I don't hear enough about it on these boards, and think many would be pleasantly surprised by it if they sat down and gave those games some proper time.

Prime 1 and 2 are on the very, very early list I have. I'm only at 15 unordered games, but those two came to mind right after the obvious ones. Mario Galaxy 2 is on there (don't hear much about it on the forums) and 3D World well could be when I finalize.

Chrono Trigger and FFIII/VI are also there and high up. With all the re-releases over the year, my brain tends to forget they were SNES first.

There are a bunch of games that appeared on the SNES that I think might surprise some people. Sim City on the SNES was fantastic, and there was also Sim Earth and Sim City 2000. There might have been a few other Sim games too. I was always a Sega kid growing up, but I have to admit that the SNES seemed to have a better colour palette and better music. The music is interesting since the Mega Drive had significantly better sound capabilities from a technical standpoint, but outside of Sonic and maybe Ecco I don't really remember music from Mega Drive games. The SNES had so many tremendous soundtracks.

What do we do about Pokemon? Should we count any pair as a single entry, such as Red and Yellow?

This one is a bit tricky. I don't care for the Pokemon series, so I would be up to hear from everyone else for their opinions. Should Red and Yellow be put in as a duo, or should they each be put in as one? It seems that most players either had both, or made sure their friend got the other one. But as before, we have used this thread to champion certain years of sports games, so do we let the passionate ones make the case for their preferred color in the series?

On a different note. Anyone who didn't get to play either the DS or GBA library would do well to pick up the Nintendo DS Lite. It can play both DS & GBA games. There are so many great games to be played.

Here is just a list of the GBA RPG and Strategy games.

Legend of Zelda Series,
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories,
Sword of Mana,
Shining Soul,
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II,
Mega Man Battle Network Series,
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance,
Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand,
Golden Sun Series,
Final Fantasy Games,
Pokemon Series,
Breath of Fire Series,
Tales of Phantasia,
Sigma Star Saga,
Advance Wars Series,
Fire Emblem Series,
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis ,
Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon,
Yggdra Union,
Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars,
Defender of the Crown,
Rebelstar: Tactical Command,
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story,
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2,
Riviera: The Promised Land,
Lunar Legend.

That list rivals all but two consoles. (SNES & PS1) So if not pick up a GBA or DS, there is a list of games to find ROMs for. And there are some pretty good emulators on mobile and iPad

Sorry I missed this. No the games do not have to be exclusive. The NBA Street games that appeared on GC, X-Box, & PS2 would be perfect candidates for submission. These are the best games that appeared on a nintendo console.

Just remember when you put your title down to also put down the console it appeared on. UK had some very different titles, for the same American release. That just helps me sort through things.

Balderdash! Though Sim Ant is very good.

My planet always seemed to wind up overheating. I suspect I was too young to really get to grips with how to play effectively but the Sim games in general were such fun sandboxes to mess around in. I haven't found that sense of freedom and imagination in a game for a long time.

A game which will also make my list (although not number 1).

PS- Regarding Pokemon Red/Blue, Gold/Silver, etc., they should be counted as one game apiece. They are the same game with minor differences. Although Yellow to Red, Platinum to Diamond, etc. are different enough to warrant separate entries, I think this countdown would be "cleaner" if the generations were confined to one entry apiece.

And if it were up to me Super Mario All-Stars wouldn't be eligible, as it is not a standalone game but a compilation of games. But it's not up to me now is it.

I don't think I had the patience as a kid for Sim Earth. I wanted goddamn dinosaurs and I wanted them NOW and the game. . .well it would sometimes give me fish if I was very patient. It would probably be better as a game I owned instead of a game I'd rent, and also having my own television and stuff. As much as I enjoyed Sim City as a child, I love it more as an adult now that nobody can tell me no when I wake up on New Years Eve and turn the game on and let it play until I wake up on New Years Day. Sim Earth would probably be a blast that way.

I do love Sim Ant though. And that funny face the ant makes when the spider spots you is absolutely priceless. But for a Sim Game that was one where you actually could accomplish things in a couple of hours.

I agree with this line of thinking. I had considered suggesting to lump each generation in as one game except for the combo game, but really...it should just go by generation. That's what we did in the Gameboy thread I'm pretty sure.

I have an incredibly soft spot for Mario 2 for reasons I don't fully understand. Mario World is great and all but I wouldn't willingly trade all my cool suits for Yoshi.

This list is getting fucking frustrating as I keep finding games that I'm not 100% certain if I liked the game or if I have fuzzy memories of being with my friends. Like Bubble Bobble. That came could be utter shite for all I know it's been over twenty years since I last played it but I remember trying to kill an asshole throwing fucking chicken legs at me while I electrocuted myself. And then getting the bad ending because I forgot to pick up some stupid key on level 93.

And the ghost. The ghost of DOOOOOOOOOOOM that would show up if you were taking too long. Actually that game really hated when you started taking your sweet time.

And Lost Vikings. That's one of only two games I've beaten with my little sister, the other being Secret of Mana since the 3 player mode let me either bring a friend or one of my brothers to balance out my sister not being a particularly proficient gamer. And being in control of all three Vikings at once allows you to pull off some interesting solutions to the puzzles.

I'm pretty sure Bubsy is a terrible game and the only reason I enjoyed that game was because he'd say hilarious quotes at the beginning of each level.

T.I (uh oh)
May 13th, 2014, 2:32 AM
Bubsy is novel in that it broke the platforming mould by having large, vertical, scaling levels. It wouldn't hold up today, but it was good fun back then. And yeah, Bubsy had so much attitude. He was hilarious.

Lost Vikings however does stand up today. Blizzard are giving that game away at the moment, and it's still amazing. Fantastic level design.

I still haven't played Galaxy 2.

The Yoshi have either lame or broken powers. The Red Fireballs are at best marginally better than throwing a shell, yellow stomps are completely useless (seriously did ever use that for anything?) and as if the Cape didn't let you not play levels you didn't feel like bothering with the Blue Flight completely cinched it. It was like a P-Wing without that obnoxious whistle.

Honestly I could have summed this up as Kuribos show> ANYTHING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED ANYWHERE AT ANYTIME.

I think three over all had better theme design as well. But I will give world that I loved finding the secret exists, the levels leading up to the Cray Cray world, the Cray Cray World. These were things I wish they'd bring back.

Am I the only person who especially after Galaxy came out and did Mario "proper" again Mario 64's issues with basically being one of the first 3d games out there and the massive bullshit we all pulled to get through levels seems glaring. If I understand you correctly... nope. Mario 64 is still brilliant and in my top 2 Mario games with SMB3.

You points on SMB3 vs SMW are on the money tho.

The Doc

By proper I mean that in Mario Galaxy most of the levels had a proper way of doing them. There weren't a lot of levels where you could just bullshit your way through. Without sitting on the game it's hard for me to point out every bullshit place where it happens but in Mario 64 there were so many places where a well placed triple jump, wall kick could get you through entire levels in ways that clearly weren't planned.

I don't mean that the game is bad, if I had to make a point I would say that the Bowser levels in that game are pretty much flawless. Beginning, end. GET THERE. That's kinda what "Mario" is for me and I love secret exits and the like. Still I was curious.

I know I'm insane because I really really like Mario 2 and Zelda 2. I know why lots of other people despise them and I wish that both of them had gotten original franchises instead of being the odd ball in their respective series but still.

I know I'm insane because I really really like Mario 2 and Zelda 2. I know why lots of other people despise them and I wish that both of them had gotten original franchises instead of being the odd ball in their respective series but still.

I love them. They're near my favourites. Played them to death.

I would have to also say Super Mario Bros. 3 Maybe it's nostalgia, but damn that game just set the bar pretty high for that genre. Are there better looking games? Sure. Better controls? Probably. I just think that it's a game that stands the test of time and the fact it came out 25 years ago and is still one of the most entertaining games of all time says a lot.

Now ask me in 3 days and I'll probably say Super Mario Land or WWF Raw lol.

An extremely underrated game for the Super NES was Alien 3. Nothing like the movie, more like a mix of Aliens and Alien 3. I would def put that in my top 15. I need to make a list.

Also, I'm rating Wind Waker phenomenally high. With the recent HD version, I can't think of a Zelda that has aged better. Played it several times over the years and I like it more each time. It ages so well and the graphical style is so perfect that it looks like something I'd absolutely accept were it released today, let alone over a decade ago. Can't think of a game with a style that has aged so well.

If I understand you correctly... nope. Mario 64 is still brilliant and in my top 2 Mario games with SMB3.

You points on SMB3 vs SMW are on the money tho.

His points regarding SMW were false. The cape (which in all honesty was better than the raccoon leaf) and the fire flower weren't the only two power ups in SMW.

Yeah Mega Man 2 and 3, the first couple Ninja Turtle games, Double Dragon games, holy shit this list is going to be rough lol. I never owned or really played the Gamecube so my list will probably feature zero games from that system. I almost bought one to get RE4 but then it came out on PS2. There was a wrestling game that looked cool, Day of Reckoning I think it was called, maybe it was part 2 that was really good, can't recall.

Not only was RE4, initially a GameCube exclusive, brilliant but the remake of RE1 deserves a lot of attention in this. It was/is a GameCube exclusive and did wonders for the game. The fact that that remake didn't get spread to other systems is surprising to me to this day.

Castlevania 2 was the best of the series imo. I enjoyed the adventure RPG aspect that they stepped away from in Castlevania 3. When they went back to that formula in SOTN the series became more popular than ever.

So yeah. Simon's Quest > Castlevania 3.

The Rick

So yeah. Simon's Quest > Castlevania 3.

No just no. The level design was far superior in 3, the bosses were much harder, and the ability to switch characters made the game more fun for me. The game was punishingly hard. It was a platformer. You're jumps must be on point especially for the clock tower if you wanted to get Grant. I hated the backtracking in 2, but I wasn't into RPGs at that time. I just downloaded it on my 3DS, and intend to give it a new play through. I do prefer the music in 2 over 3 though.

Rosk has excellent taste in games. He is one of the few that had Faxanadu for the NES games. I went back and played a ROM of it. It's great, and a tough game.

do Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt count as one game??

That is completely up to you. Yes there was a compilation cartridge with Mario + Duck Hunt, and there was a cartridge with Mario + Duck Hunt + World Class Track meet. If you want to put it on your list go for it. But it will be counted as a different entry on the list proper, and will NOT be added to the totals of either single entry. Super Mario Bros., for the most part, will be voted as it's own entry. If you feel so strongly that you want to put the compilation on your list, then go for it. I don't broadcast entries that I think are stupid, nor the people that submitted it. I reveal the title, and unless it makes the list no one is attached to it unless they themselves speak up.

I hope that clears it up.

Did the same for my friends and we had two copies between us and they both had the damn bug. It kinda killed Wrestling games for us for a while not only because of the unlockables but we almost never used real wrestlers, everybody spent tons of time creating their characters and on WM2000 we would run weekly shows and monthly PPVs with different people holding custom belts usually for specaity matches like Crimson Mask (First Blood), Ironhead (LMS), Cage King, Triple Crown and Sovereign (Standard you had to survive a King of the Ring tourny to get a shot.)

When No Mercy ate all that. . .three or four times (before someone started backing things up on memory packs) we kinda collectively said fuck that.

We are 8 submissions in already. Happy with the early support, and discussion in this thread.

Are there any Nintendo DS games that you would see as worthy?

The World Ends With You is probably the best original RPG on the DS. I do think it is fantastic, but not enough to crack my top 30 Nintendo games. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is sitting at #30 though. We are capped at submitting 20, so it is amongst the last 10 off my list.

This is in a lot of ways the hardest list I've had to make for one of these. I can easily go over 50 games that deserve to on it and the top is so close. Any of my top 15, I could very comfortably put at number one. Leaning towards the original Zelda for that spot, as it is one of the most important games ever but could honestly throw something more recent like Galaxy 2 or even 3D World without issue. So much greatness. Likewise, something like FF3/6 or Chrono Trigger could easily top mine.

BATMAN (NES)
Double Dragon
Mega Man II
Resident Evil (Remake for GameCube)
DuckTales woo hoo
Turtles in Time
TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
Mario 2
Mario Lost Levels
Super Mario Galaxy

Fierce war going down for spot 20 right now. And this is with me avoiding the urge to count Arkham City: Armored Edition or Mass Effect 3, as that would royally complicate and fuck over my list if I opened those floodgates.

I have both Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 on my list and that's really tricky for me. Want to drop one of them to fit two from these on, but I feel 2 is the better game and that it won't get votes from other posters. Don't want to make that move and screw the first game out of its spot. Kind of the same with Turtles in Time vs. The Arcade Game.

Galaxy fell this far because Galaxy 2 is in my top five.

I hope you have more than the debacle that was the PC game list :(

We're getting there. I think I barely hit double digits a day or two before the"original" deadline for the PC list. I'll start advertising a bit more heading into this weekend, and next Monday night RAW's thread.

And, obviously, my list is pending. Should I forget, just yell at me and call me dumb and I'll send it over. It still needs tweaking though...

So far Mario 3D Land is still holding on my personal list at #18. I didn't know if I would even have a 3DS game on my list when first compiling, and that still might be the case.

Just over one week away from the deadline. I have 12 lists in at this time. There have been 30+ people who have posted in this thread, so I'm positive that we can get more submissions.

Found this one late. I only had a SNES and N64, so my list will obviously be skewed that way. I'll have a go before the end of the weekend.

I'm still sitting at 12 lists. If I haven't gotten any more by Thursday, I'll throw out some friendly PMs to some of the people that have posted in here. I figure many people will, as per the usual, wait until the last minute.

Get those lists in!!!

I have 14 as of this moment, so I will send a mass PM out to people that have posted in this thread, but haven't sent a list in.

Will make a list this weekend. I'm mostly going off misplaced nostalgia so I'm sure it'll go over swimmingly.

I sent mine in last night after getting the PM. I had been rattling around my top 5 or so for a while, but considering I never owned a Nintendo system until the Wii, I was pretty surprised at how hard it was to trim it down to 20 titles. I also noticed the SNES absolutely dominating the list, and I wonder if that will be the case for many of us.

I'm up to 19 lists, so we've had a good turnout. I still have a few messages from people that said they'd turn one in by the end of RAW. I'll start compiling the data tomorrow during Raw, and probably start the reveal Friday. That should let me double check, and make sure I haven't missed any questions that I need to ask.

With this reveal, I'm only going to reveal titles on the weekdays. It seems like I loose people on the weekends, and they almost seem against bringing up a title once it has been passed by another entry on the list. We are at least looking at a top 30 list as of now, but that could change depending on what I see tomorrow from the last minute people.

Let me know if I still have time. I can compile a list after work, in about 6 hours.

Alright, so I didn't get to work on this. All the lists were stored on a folder on HERE. I'm going to do a bit of it tonight, but I won't have much time tomorrow. I'm shooting for Monday for the first reveal, but I'm not promising anything as of now. I am firm on the no weekend reveals though.

Yea its cool. I'm tabulating a bit tonight, and will finish this up this weekend.

If anyone else wants to sneak one in before the weekend go on ahead.

I've go one outstanding piece. I gave them until tonight to get it in. If not the list will be finalized, and I'm starting the reveal one way or the other tomorrow.
