If Goto wins he'd lose it quickly. Maybe a transitional reign. You gotta figure whatever comes next is to build toward Okada vs Swagsuke

Think Okada/Nakamura is happening sooner rather than later? Or would it not be saved for Wrestle Kingdom 9? Wonder if they'll give Okada a year plus reign, or have him drop it soon and then Nakamura picks it up soon after? Shibata vs Nakamura for the top belt excites me. Would be big enough for Tokyo Dome wouldn't it? With all the history of those two, and Tanahashi being the chosen ones and all the stuff afterwards.

* The biggest news of today’s Korakuen show wasn’t a match, but an announcement. After a long injury that has kept him out for around a year, 40-year-old Wataru Inoue announced his retirement from professional wrestling. He said that he has tried to recover, but his body won’t respond the same as it did.

Inoue was a promising young lion who debuted on the same day as Tanahashi and Shibata on 10/10/99, the day before the final Tokyo Dome show of the 90s. He rose through the junior ranks, finally winning the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title, before deciding to become a heavyweight.

Inoue enjoyed one brief reign as IWGP Tag Team Champion with Yuji Nagata, but for the most part his heavyweight turn didn’t result in much. An emotional Nagata watched as Wataru announced his retirement.

Wataru will continue to work for New Japan as a staff member. He’ll have an official retirement ceremony soon, so that he can say a proper farewell to the fans. Ganbare Wataru!

* There was tension between the New Japan army team after today’s main event, specifically Tanahashi and Goto. Tanahashi isn’t happy that Goto plans to team up with Katsuyori Shibata and declared that if this goes ahead, he no longer wants to team with Goto. Goto said if Tanahashi doesn’t want to team with him, he doesn’t have to, but should think it through.

* Ryusuke Taguchi returned from some 8 months out of action to resume his grudge with former Apollo 55 tag partner turned betrayer, Prince Devitt. And in the 8 man tag match, Devitt welcomed back Taguchi by pinning him. Taguchi said he plans to push Devitt out of New Japan for what he has done.

When I was first getting into Japanese wrestling, I was following NOAH heavily and really didn't know much about New Japan at the time. The only guys I knew were Liger and Inoue, so I always thought he was a huge deal. Sadly, his career never lived up to the potential, but he's sort of the consummate company guy there.

Poor Inoue; he had so many great matches, yet for the lengthy "in-betweens" of those matches, he was just uber-boring Wataru Inoue. Still, he will be missed, and deserves all the credit in the world for the New Japan vs. NOAH feud that he was a center-piece of.

If Goto wins the belt could we see Goto/Shibata for the belt? Or maybe a heel Tanahashi later down the line? Or will it be a transitional reign that will end with either Okada winning it back or Shinsuke taking it and solidifying his place as the absolute leader of CHAOS?

Or with rumours of unification will we have Nakamura win back the IC belt later and Okada hold the HW belt for an unprecedented amount of time and have those two collide?

Who is a reasonable contender to end Okada's reign? I'm thinking one of Nakamura, Tanahashi or Goto or maybe Shibata or Suzuki as outsiders. Makabe?

8. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: Kota Ibushi (c) beat El Desperado (13:34) with a Phoenix splash (1st defense).
9. NEVER Openweight Title: Tomohiro Ishii beat Tetsuya Naito (c) (23:41) with a brainbuster to become the 3rd champion.
10. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Kazuchika Okada (c) beat Hirooki Goto (22:51) with the Rainmaker (8th defense).

* In front of the second packed house in two days, Kazuchika Okada’s dominance of New Japan Pro-Wrestling continued as he made a successful V8 defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Title over the recently returned Hirooki Goto. Goto had failed in SIX previous attempts to win the big one, but some felt this could be the day. Okada, who entered holding a giant Final Fantasy-esque sword and huge Godzilla like dinosaur, had other ideas. After 22 minutes of fierce combat, Okada flattened Goto with the Rainmaker and his reign approaches one year in length (April 7th). Maybe Goto’s eighth attempt will be luckier…

Shibata, who easily beat YOSHI-HASHI earlier in the show, was told by Okada that he’d have to win the New Japan Cup if he wants to challenge, while Gedo told Goto that he was again at the back of the line as far as contenders go.

* The biggest cult favourite in New Japan, Tomohiro Ishii, delighted fans everywhere by upsetting Tetsuya Naito to win the NEVER Openweight Title in a thrilling semi final. Ishii has spent most of his career in undercard matches, but some outstanding performances in the past year have seen him grab big wins, today’s being among his biggest. In a match of the year contender that many felt outshone a strong main event, Ishii spiked Naito with his brainbuster to become the 3rd NEVER champion. With the IWGP IC Title becoming so prestigious, it was probably best to have Naito drop it to a “lesser” name, and it can now be defended more regularly.

* Kota Ibushi made a successful V1 defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title over the new mysterious masked man El Desperado. Desperado appeared out of nowhere at the Tokyo Dome to issue a polite challenge and put up a good fight in his first attempt at the junior strap, but fell short to the new leader of the division. Ibushi landed a perfect Phoenix splash for the three count and moves on to whoever the next challenger will be.

* The Gracies returned after losing to Nagata & Saku by DQ at the Tokyo Dome in January, facing the Japanese veterans in a rematch. It was another underwhelming bout with the Gracies still not really accustomed to pro wrestling, but they won when Rolles choked out Sakuraba. Incredibly, Yano & Iizuka came out and issued a challenge to the Gracies in what could be one of the weirdest matches ever seen.

* TenKoji are now number one contenders for the NWA World Tag Team Title (held by Rob Conway & Jax Dane) after beating Big Daddy Yum Yum & Michael Tarver today. Kojima successfully defended the NWA World Heavyweight Title against Yum Yum in Hiroshima, but Tenzan fell to Tarver on the same show. That was avenged today as he forced the former Nexus member to tap out to his Anaconda Vice.

* The Young Bucks overcame Time Splitters in an exciting opening match to successfully defend the IWGP Jr. Tag Team Title for the 2nd time. The Jacksons have impressed since joining the Bullet Club and overcame former champions KUSHIDA & Shelley today when Matt pinned Shelley following the More Bang For Your Buck.

The first New Beginning show was mostly an okay nothing show, but there were two things to take away from it.

Goto and Shibata are great as a tag team. Seriously, they just play off of each other so well.

I would definitely consider the main event to be a top five in the Nakamura/Tanahashi rivalry; even the botch at the end makes sense when you consider that Nakamura hasn't used the flying armbar in years. I know that this won't be the end of the rivalry between these two, but if it did end up being so, I can hardly think of a better send-off.
