I wish Motivated Mochizuki showed up more, because he is legit one of the best wrestlers on the planet. Alas, being stuck in Dragon Gate tends to make him lethargic and go through the motions, but that's okay because we get this match. T-Hawk kind of just shows up and holds his own, so the weight of this "Young Lion proves himself to grizzled veteran" match is carried entirely by Mochizuki; how he targets T-Hawk's arm because the fucker won't stop chopping, how he gives him disdainful kicks, as if to ask the bookers, "Why am I even here?" and the way he sells T-Hawk's comebacks. It is a masterpiece of a veteran getting a young guy more over than he is. Out of Dragon Gate no less.
Simply wonderful.

Saw Ishii/Naito. Enjoyed it plenty but I've seen it both overpraised and overly criticised already. The botches in the first half weren't a big deal for me. Loved the last couple of minutes. That final headbutt from Naito was just revolting.
Will get together a New Japan list which I'll update over the course of the year.

Promised descriptions. If available, I'll post links to youtube/dailymotion videos of the matches in question, save the ones that Defrost has already uploaded.
MUST SEE
Nakamura vs. Tanahash(c). Their most recent encounter, and easily one of their best. It is almost redundant to state why these two work so well together. Since they didn't have to really tone things down because they were sharing the spotlight with Okada and Naito, they were really able to go out, with a lot of good exchanges (both in-ring and in character). What really sets this apart was that, for the first time since their series started, the two were dead even in singles victories over each other, and the eventual winner of the match would for the first time take the lead against his opponent. Infinitely more satisfying then their Wrestle Kingdom bout.
HIGHLY-RECOMMENDED
Titan vs. Negro Casas. Casas is perhaps the sole reason I keep up with as much lucha as I do (which is very little). Even nearing 50 the man retains so much of his athleticism, and is so good at what he does, that he remains a treat to watch. Having said that, the first fall seems to be going somewhere but then suddenly ends, and the second fall is damn close to "blink and miss it" territory. It's all about the sweet, sweet third fall. Also, even though it makes sense, its still a little jarring how even small offense can lead to a pinfall victory in lucha.
Hirooki Goto vs. Shibata.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QloFFF6nDMo
I really can't say anything about this match that Cewsh said in his review (available at you know where). Goto beats (and gets beaten) the fuck out of his more talented best friend all to show that he truly belonged in the main event based on his own abilities, and not as a last minute replacement.
Hirooki Goto, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tetsuya Naito vs. Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura, Tomohiro Ishii
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1b0csy_chaos-kazuchika-okada-shinsuke-nakamura-tomohiro-ishii-vs-hirooki-goto-hiroshi-tanahashi-tetsuya-nai_sport?search_algo=1
This match sets up the three big title feuds heading into the New Beginning weekend, and it is about as perfect a build-up tag as one could have; no down time, lots of interactions between wrestlers, and it left you wanting more while still leaving you satisfied. I wish WWE could do build-up tags this well.
Tomohiro Ishii vs. Tetsuya Naito(c)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt3o8JDKQ9U
So new yet so much hype. We have people praising this as the MOTY, and others saying it is overrated garbage. Myself? The ending run was jaw-dropping amazing, they had the crowd eating out of their hands from the middle onwards, and it just felt special. The problem comes into the Godawful beginning, where we are supposed to believe that Naito's shitty strikes are in league with Ishii's. Someone who's nickname is, "Stone Pitbull" should not be losing a punching contest against a pretty boy who's forte is high-flying and lucha tricks. Every time they got a good thing going where Naito would take advantage with his athleticism but then get cocky, get caught, and die, they went back to a punching contest that frankly shouldn't have been a contest. Ugh.
Still the good far outweighed the bad, given where I placed it. I can see others placing this lower, or even significantly lower, so this won't break my heart if you disagree.
RECOMMENDED
Tetsuya Naito vs. Kazuchika Okada(c):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJTsnTG4vH8A case of too-much-talent to-be-denied; there was no way these two would have a bad match. They worked their asses off to show that they, not their elders, belonged in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom. However, the problem here was once again Naito, though this had less to do with the quaility of his work and more to do with no one thinking Naito had a chance in hell. This felt like a padded title defense rather than a serious challenge from the G-1 winner at the Dome show. Still a very good match.
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Shinsuke Nakamura(c)
See above/Cewsh's review for my thoughts; a pairing that can never go wrong that nonetheless held back so as not to steal their juniors' thunder. It was painfully clear that these two had a better match in them for their first singles encounter in two years. Thankfully, we would get just that later in the year.
Maasaki Mochizuki vs. Masato Yoshino(c)
Some history with this one; to my knowledge, Yoshino has never defeated Mochizuki one-on-one. Add to the fact that Mochizuki was the one who ended Yoshino's last Dream Gate reign, we are celebrating 20 years of Mochizuki, and he has just come off a great match against T-Hawk, you have some actual doubt as to the finish of the match.
The beginning of this match was fantastic, with both guys but especially Mochizuki doing some intense armwork, with the added intrigue of Yoshino doing tricked-out lucha submissions while Mochizuki attacked with straight-forward armbars. Given how the T-Hawk match went, I thought all this limb-work would go somewhere. Unfortunately, this is Dragon Gate, and more importantly a Yoshino match. So it essentially went like this:
Mochizuki: "Sell my offense, damnit!"
Yoshino: "Don't Wanna!!" (Petulantly doesn't sell the arm)
Mochizuki: "Well then I won't sell your armwork then; take that."
Yoshino: "Pffft, think I care bitch? Time for hot runz and MOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEZZZZZZZ!!!"
Mochizuki: "....You know what? Fuck you." (Dumps Yoshino right on his smug prick skull before kicking him upside the head).
If you can just get past the armwork and ignore that anything was done with it, the rest of the match is really good with a very hot crowd, even if it delves into ridiculous overkill.
Hajime Ohara vs. Taiji Ishimori(c)
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1abo8i_taiji-ishimori-c-vs-hajime-ohara-noah_sport?search_algo=1
Both of these guys are Ultimo Dragon/Skyda trainees, who also belong to that rare and distinct class of great heroes called, "Fuckers who paid attention during the parts of class where they did NOT teach you how to do flippies" (Looking at you, 90% of Dragon Gate roster; looking right at you.) Ishimori is especially an underrated technician in the ring, though he often uses up most of his charisma during his dance to the ring. I wish it was Ohara who broke out rather than bland KUSHIDA when SMASH went under, but win some, lose some...
Anyway, this match has the opposite problem of the above; not a lot of overkill (if any), everything made sense, was hit crisp and clean; I just wish NOAH crowds were as easy to rile-up as Dragon Gate crowds, or even New Japan ones. They were not completely silent; just subdued. Ishimori's quiet yet quality reign as junior heavyweight champion has been overshadowed by rival promotion's bombastically loud but soulless, paint-by-the numbers junior matches *COUGHPRINCEDEVITTCOUGH* Give it a whirl; a lot to like here.
Virus vs. Titan(c)
Good for the same reasons that the Titan vs Negro Casas were good, with the same flaws; difference is that Virus < Casas. Pretty much all there is to that.

Hirooki Goto vs. Kazuchika Okada(c)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fklNFqDhTt4
Accidental coinicidences often make for the best stories, and having Goto's seventh IWGP Heavyweight challenge coincide with Okada's seventh title defense was just one of those little things that made this match better for me. Also, Okada came out with a buster sword and a dinosaur he presumably conquered and brought back from the Jurassic period.
Anyway, this was some good stuff, but no better than what they've done in the past. It helped that the finish was somewhat in doubt, but ultimately more of the same from these two. Admittedly, more of the same is good, but only so much.

Defrost
February 16th, 2014, 3:06 AM
The Virus match just seemed crazier and more out of control whereas the Casas match felt more like an exhibition. I like Casas when he wrestles Rush because he hates Rush, and I like my Titan matches to be in the more batshit territory. I want hate and crazy when I watch lucha and that will trump a solid wrestling contest with me.

Well I really liked the rematch they had on Raw. That felt more wild and made a lot more sense to me. Watching their PPV match it was just like a standard 6 man tag played to the soundtrack of especially dreadful commentary. The match on Raw felt bigger to me. That their was more emotion and hate involved and the work was up to the level of how the teams were supposed to feel about each other.
Maybe seeing the Raw match first ruined it. :dunno:

I loved the initial confrontation from the first match, Ambrose being the lunatic and conveying his hatred for Wyatt, who was just going around being creepy as fuck. Rollins and Reigns were seemingly concentrating on the task at hand. No one standing down. On first viewing I thought a fairly slow paced build up then happened but on further watches there's actually very little that doesn't play out at a hundred miles an hour.
Also I think your appreciation of the match is again hampered by not viewing the product regularly Defrost. The Wyatts aren't meant to hate The Shield necessarily. They cost The Shield a match inadvertently but accepted the challenge of the match. The Wyatts are meant to be controlled by Bray who was up for causing chaos basically. There was always far more hatred from The Shield and they were always the ones who were up for fighting at any time which I think was conveyed well. Bray being the leader was played on very well. Demanding tags, directing operations, ordering the table spot, Harper sacrificing himself for him. Plus the tensions in The Shield were played on, every tag seemed to be via Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose didn't tag each other much (if at all) and the little expressions at every tag got that over.
Not to mention some of the spots and sequences in the match. Fucking hell I loved it.

Tanahashi is a DICK. I think the finish works: Nakamura's knee is fucked but when Tanahashi is recovering with his back turned he just has to take the opportunity and capitalise. Then despite the pain he powers through like two more Boma-Yes to finish him off.
Still got Ishii/Naito & the tag titles to watch. Then I'm going to watch Supercard Of Honor and after that I'll probably need a break after a week of far too much wrestling.

IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Tanahashi(c) vs. Nakamura 4/6 New Japan
Seeing Nakamura in an underdog role against Tanahashi is so weird, and yet makes sense; for the first time in their personal feud, Tanahashi is coming in with the winning record against Nakamura, and with three wins in a row to boot. Tanahashi plays the role he was born to play; smug prick heel who mocks his opponents for not being nearly as pretty as himself. I wish Nakamura did a better job of selling the leg here, but I can get passed it as Nakamura reaching deep within and pulling out super-human powers to overcome his foe. Absolutely fantastic.
KO-D Openweight Championship: HARASHIMA(c) vs. Shigehiro Irie 1/26 DDT
I slept on this and I'm a bad person for it. Shigehiro won the Openweight championship in an emotional moment of an underdog overcoming the invincible *shudder* Kenny Omega. In the sixth month of his reign, however, he was met with the unsung hero of DDT, HARASHIMA. Poor Irie was ill-equipped to deal with the most dominate K-OD champ of all time, and he went down lack a fat green sack. While HARASHIMA went on to represent DDT across the indies for the rest of 2013, Irie built himself back up, and now we get a huge re-match that feels big, is wrestled big, and the consequences feel big.

GHC Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Taiji Ishimori(c) vs. Daisuke Harada NOAH 3/8
It's Daisuke's second time trying to take the belt off of Taiji, who has single-handedly restored one of the most lackluster divisions in all of pro wrestling; the NOAH Jr. division. If you liked the Ohara title defense, you'll love this one.
New Japan Cup Round 1: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Tatsuya Naito New Japan 3/15
Naito seeks to avenge his loss against Ishii. Lots of clobbering and hate and so-forth. Simple but effective.
IWGP NEVER Openweight Championship: Tomohiro Ishii(c) vs Tatsuya Naito New Japan 4/6
Did you like their first match? Did you like their New Japan Cup bout? Okay then; you'll like this.
All Asia Tag Team Championship: Burning (Akiyama Jun & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)(c) vs. Keisuke Ishii & Shigehiro Irie DDT 4/29
The All-Asia tag team titles are the oldest active wrestling championship in Japan; since 1955. The current champions are legit big name stars who could march into New Japan tomorrow and credibly main event the rest of the year to the complaint of no one. Their challengers are DDT mainstays, and, comparatively speaking, are scrubs. Oh sure, Ishii is the rising hope of DDT, Irie was the former K-OD champion, but make no mistake; the streak stains on Akiyama's tights have more mainstream cred then these two goofs. So what do we get here? The classic All Japan tag formula, and it rocks. Ishii and Irie try their little hearts out, and even as the champions plug away, in the back of your mind your thinking that maybe, just maybe, they could pull this off, even as the sheer impossibility of it slaps you in the face.

Kotaro Suzuki vs. Atsushi Aoki All Japan 2/5
I'm legit shocked at myself; for watching an All Japan match in 2014 and liking it. This is part of the Excite Series, and I believe the winner gets to wrestle Ultimo Dragon, so its kind of a big deal. The former All Asia tag champs lost their belts to their former Burning compatriots, but now these regular tag partners must face each other due to luck of the draw. Suzuki is a fantastic base as a wrestler, and Aoki has never gotten the credit he deserves; he's easily one of the top five Jr. heavyweight wrestlers in Japan. There is a brief lull towards the middle, but this is just really good action and focused limb work that has actual consequence. Definitely check this one out.
IWGP NEVER Openweight Championship: Tomohiro Ishii(c) vs KUSHIDA New Japan 4/12
One of the guys I have never been as high on as others is KUSHIDA; he always came across as a low-rent Taijri to me, or a slightly improved Chris Sabin. However, he is in there with Ishii, who is a man incapable of doing wrong. Watch it; love it; embrace the love of Ishii.
IWGP Heavyweight Title: Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. AJ Styles New Japan 5/3
The finish to this match is just plain quizzical, and that's the only way I can describe it. It seems left-field and doing it for the sake of doing it. I'm not sure how Memphis-style interference will go over in Japan, either. Still, this match deserves praise for AJ's performance, which went from getting no reaction to the crowd becoming invested in his heel persona.

IWGP NEVER Openweight Championship: Tomohiro Ishii(c) vs Tomoaki Honma New Japan 5/3
How did I forget about this bad boy? Literally the best match on the show. Honma is literally the only man who can play the underdog better than Ishii, and has babyface charisma out the ass. This match just ruled from start to finish; Honma is fucking crazy, and Ishii is the best big-match wrestler in the world. It is not even a debatable point.

Cabellera vs. Cabellera Rush vs. Shocker, CMLL 3/21
You’ll notice a lack of lucha matches that I nominate. That’s because I don’t watch a lot of lucha. Most of it is athletic yet boring dudes doing the same spots over and over. Unless it’s a pair of maestros tearing it up on the mat, or a hate-filled feud, I’m usually just not interested. This is definitely the latter, and we start out with a bang. I’m not sure why these two hate each other, but judging from their reactions, I’d guess that Rush slept with Shocker’s daughter, who fed Rush’s dog to the wood-chipper in retaliation. Rush, the technico that just can’t be cheered, and Shocker, the rudo that just can’t be booed, start out strong and fast, wildly swinging at and diving on each other in an effort to injure and maim. Suddenly, one of them remembers that if they don’t win the match, they’ll be shaved bald, and tricks the other into a lucha pin to take the first fall, afterwards kicking the man while he’s down. So you’d think the second fall they’d slow it down, right? Fuck that, they start swinging at each other once again, and that pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the match. Just a fun, wild ride. I was floored by how much I liked this.
This is me saying a lucha match is must-see. Get on it.

Open the Dream Gate Championship: Ricochet(c) vs. YAMATO, Dragon Gate 5/4
I hate Ricochet. You'd think I'd be proud of a fellow Kentuckian becoming the first non-Japanese wrestler to hold the top belt in Dragon Gate, but I can't stand him. He is the epitome of everything I despise in Junior Heavyweight style wrestling; lots of flips, lots of dives, bare-minimum understanding of the basics of pro wrestling (enough to get by on the standard 'roll around the mat and pretend we know how to grapple' stages of independent matches), zero personality, one of the dumbest finishers I have ever seen (throws opponent from his shoulders to THEIR feet, and then spin kicks them in the head. It's as terrible as it sounds) and everyone and their mother singing his praises just because he can do a double-rotation moonsault. Oh and he has a really stupid pec tattoo.
To top it off, they went with a "Work the Leg" style of match that is so common in Jr. style matches. You can imagine how such matches work out when the wrestlers involved are almost entirely dependent on flippies for their offense. This had all the makings of a recipe to drive me up a wall.
And yet, some how, some way, YAMATO makes this shit work. This is hand-holding at its finest, as YAMATO does some blatant cheating to get the crowd behind Ricochet, but doesn't go overboard to the point of being silly. He even has the sense to make sure the referee is looking the other way (not that a Dragon Gate ref would ever disqualify someone, but hey thought that counts). He trash-talks the champion to further establish him being a dick. Because he got his start in Minoru Suzuki's Pancrase, he knows how to grapple on the mat, and can guide Ricochet there too. His strikes are on point, and he turns the pace of the match up and down when appropriate. On top of which, Ricochet actually does a surprisingly decent job of selling the leg; it hampers him, it prevents him from climbing the ropes quickly, when he hits his finish he can't go for the cover. This was just a highly enjoyable Dream Gate title match. Hats off to YAMATO.
and Ricochet too, I guess.

2 Count-5 Rope Break Match: CIMA vs Super Shisa, Dragon Gate 2/20
December of last year, these two met in a 5-rope break match, which basically means if you use rope-breaks to get out of a submission or pinning predicament 5 times, you are declared the loser by forfeit. As such it lead to a match with a lot of swank lucha-style grappling; CIMA has long been the Ace of Dragon Gate despite his numerous attempts to pass that mantel to someone else, but Shisa is the undisputed technician of the roster, so the 5-rope break rule was all the handicap the innovator of the Yoshi-Tonic/Canadian Destroyer needed to level the playing field. Indeed, it ended up being one of the biggest wins of the veteran's depressingly achievement-lite career (he prefers to stay in the background and train the up-and-comers) as Shisa upset CIMA. This is their anticipated re-match, with the added stipulation that now you only needed to pin your opponent for a two-count as opposed to the standard three.
Slower-paced match then you might anticipate for a Dragon Gate show, but it had more of the same swank-lucha grappling, and was only 10 minutes long to boot. Check it out.
KO-D Openweight Championship: HARASHIMA(c) vs. Masa Takanashi, DDT 2/23
HARASHIMA, Mochizuki, and Masato Tanaka need to get together and form a "40+ And Still the Best" club, because they are just awesome. Anyway, this match came about when HARASHIMA, who at the time held all three of DDT's singles titles, was just chillaxin' and being a Goddamn boss, when all of the sudden Takanashi runs out of nowhere and pins him for DDT's 24/7 title, the Ironman championship. Takanashi demanded the president of DDT name him the number one contender...only for Masa himself to get rolled-up and lose the belt, while a bemused HARASHIMA looked on. Undaunted, Takanashi continued to annoy and harass the boss until he finally snapped; he would be booked in an Ironman Heavymetalweight championship match against the man who beat him; the winner would be declared both the Ironman champion AND the number one contender for the Openweight title.
Masa Takanashi....lost. That's right, he lost the number one contender's match. So why did he still get the shot? Because he tricked the president you see; he had Emi Sakura switch the official contract with one that guaranteed Masa an Openweight title shot regardless of the result of the Ironman title match. The moral to the story kids? Always read before you sign, especially the fine print.
I fucking love DDT.
Oh yeah the match. So it was essentially Masa's Johnny Saint-inspired tricks and grappling abilities trying to get a quick win while preventing HARASHIMA from gaining any momentum, because Masa is a scrawny, scrawny dude, and will not be able to withstand more than one or two strikes from the machine known as HARASHIMA. This was an actively different KO-D title match then the one in January, and I dig it.
Two Towers (Shuji Ishikawa & Kohei Sato) vs. Wild Network (Manabu Soya & Ryuichi Kawakami), Big Japan 5/5
In the last two years or so, Kohei Sato has morphed from the most boring man in Zero-1 to a marvelous dick head who loves invading other companies. Weird. Anyway, the story here is Kawakami looking to prove that he belongs in there with relative big names like Sato, Ishikawa, and partner Soya. I personally feel that Kawakami is a bit too polished a talent to be in these situations, but we get a good match out of it so who am I to argue with what works. Big Japan announcers are the best; laughing hysterically in disbelief at the violence parties they are privy to.

NEVER Openweight Championship: Tomohiro Ishii (c) vs Kota Ibushi — New Japan, 5/25
Ishii is the best wrestler in the world; I fail to see how this is even a contest or even debatable fact. Through the strength of his smash-mouth style and fantastic matches alone, he has become one of the most beloved wrestlers on the roster. Now, Ibushi can be hit or miss, but as a punching bag that can get surly and strike back when necessary, he is firmly in his most enjoyable element. Everything is snug, everything makes sense, HARDWAY BLOOD; what’s not to love?
CHIKARA Grand Championship: Eddie Kingston (c) vs Icarus— CHIKARA, 5/25
This is the culmination of nearly a year of risks, hard work, and reward for both CHIKARA and especially Icarus. Icarus had spent the vast majority of his CHIKARA career as an evil rudo, but through his desire to bring CHIKARA back from the ashes, he has emerged as the most beloved. Conversely, Eddie Kingston, the ace of the company, the first and only Grand Champion, had started out his title reign as the most beloved man in the company, and through paranoia, selfishness, and looking out for himself, he has become an evil bastard who would have gladly let CHIKARA stay dead if it meant he no longer had to defend HIS title, allowing him to keep it forever. Now, on CHIKARA’s most important show ever, in front of one of the largest crowds ever, Icarus must take the title back for CHIAKRA from a champion too selfish to act like one...or die trying. That last one is increasingly likely, as poor Icarus really doesn’t have the firepower to stand toe-to-toe with Kingston, and all he can rely on are lucha tricks, quick roll-ups, and the ever dependable CHIKARA Special…
There are better executed matches this year; hell there are better executed matches on this list. But I challenge anyone to name a match where story and ring-work meshed together so well into one roller-coaster of a ride. Thus far, my match of the year.

I don’t believe it. How in the hell did Yone have this in him? Maybe it was because KENTA was leaving, so the crowd was rowdy. Maybe it was because after Nagata flippantly remarked he’d take on anybody, Yone came in to represent the original NOAH crew and tell this New Japan fuck to go stuff himself. Maybe he and Nagata just mesh well because of similar styles. Whatever it was, Yone will most likely never have a match this good again, but if this is his swan-song, career performance, than hot damn is it one to be proud of. The lack of leg-selling is a little annoying, but given the story I’m willing to buy Yone having temporary superpowers.

I'm a little mixed on the Rush vs. Volador Jr. match. On the one hand, I thought the match itself was brilliant, and Rush may very well be the best "don't call me" rudo to ever lace up a pair of boots. On the other hand, using Chris Benoit's theme song was so uncomfortable and tasteless that even the dancing girls, who if before they ever made an expression that wasn't a smile I missed it, faltered and looked like they wanted to be anywhere else in the world right there. It's left me feeling very down about the whole thing.

Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship: Battle Royale - DDT, 4/29
Okay class, story time!
Sanshiro Takagi, the founder of the DDT promotion is the 999th Ironman Heavymetalweight champion. The Ironman title, for those who don't know, is contested exactly the same as the old WWE Hardcore Championship during its 24/7 days, except they go the extra mile in Japan; wrestlers, fans, ladders, blowup dolls and even invisible men have held the title. But now, Takagi has declared that he will retire the belt. Poison Sawada JULIE, retired DDT alumni and the founder and first holder of the Ironman title, came and claimed that the only way to retire the belt was burn it with a special lighter that he had found in an ancient Aztecan temple while he travesed the globe, and the only way he would hand the lighter over is if Takagi defended the belt one last time, in a special battle royale, where to win you had to eliminate everyone else by pinfall, submission, or over the top rope, both feet in the floor Royal Rumble style.
Takagi agreed, but what he didn't count on was Sawada using his knowledge of drugs and hypnotism to temporarily grant his powers to every single other participant in the match! What we get are hijinks, funnies, and the best comedy match of the year.
Takagi ends up overcoming these odds, only to reveal that he knew Sawada was fucking with him about the lighter; he just wanted to fuck with Sawada in turn. He brought out his TRUE plans for the belt; a cardboard box he would use to seal the great silliness once and for all. Sawada snaps, and viciously attacks Takagi with the belt, throwing it on top of him and starting cutting the angriest of promos....only for the ref to count to three and award the 1000th reign of Ironman Heaymetalweight Championship to...the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship belt. The belt is its own champion. I. Love. DDT.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomoaki Honma vs. Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows — New Japan 6/6
So this kind of came out of nowhere. Build-up to the tag title match with Makabe in Honma's place, but this will be so much better than that match simply because it has STRUCTURE! You have mouthy heels in Bullet Club who have to cheat to gain the advantage (and not their typical OBNOXIOUS CHEATING that has become the staple of terrible Bullet Club matches) you have an ace-caliber wrestler on the other side who does not put up with their shit, and for a partner you give him a capable yet out-of-his-depth underdog to take the beating and get the heat. In short, they played their rolls without over playing them, and we get a tag match that is infinitely better than anything the Usos have done this year. Get on this one.
BOSJ: KUSHIDA vs. Jushin Thunder Lyger — New Japan 6/6
The best junior heavyweight/crusierweight/light heavyweight/X-Division/whatever-you-want-to-call-it match I have seen in years. It's the last night of the round robin portion of the tournament before we move onto the semi-finals, and KUSHIDA qualifies with either a win or a draw (hell I think he might have even qualified with a loss) so he can afford to take it easy tonight. Lyger, however, needs a win to even get into contention, and thus he brings out OMEGA-LEVEL DICK LYGER! Dick-Lyger is a prick who will shake your hand one minute...and then spend the next locking you in illegal holds in-between taking you to the outside and risking disqualification while destroying your leg with a chair and table. Don't take anything away from KUSHIDA either, as unlike some other workers (coughRicochetcough) he can effectively sell the leg without looking like a fish out of water (and when I say sell, I don't mean, "grabs leg, makes face, runs on it like it was nothing immediately after"). He also, when in an illegal hold, doesn't engage in contrived flippies to get out of it (coughRicochetcough) but instead looks at the ref, goes, "What the hell, Tiger?" and gets him to release the hold. The finishing stretch really feels like a desperate struggle, as now KUSHIDA fights for his life, not to qualify for the semi-finals, but to make sure he reaches them with anything close to 100%.
Just a really great, simple match, where again they didn't try to over-reach into things they couldn't do, and just build it around what they can. A fantastic masterpiece.
Highly-Recommended
BOSJ Finals: Ricochet vs. KUSHIDA — New Japan 6/8
See my post in the BOSJ thread to get my thoughts on the match; whatever my complaints, this is definitely worth your while and, much like the Dragon Gate Dead or Alive show, a staggeringly good Ricochet match. KUSHIDA really makes this.

BOSJ: Taniguchi vs. El Desperado — New Japan 6/6
I've been disappointed in Desperado after getting hyped from his brilliant run in CMLL, and Taniguchi has been the drizzling shits for years. Yet somehow, someway, they make this match work. This is a really fun bout where again, there was a potential spot open for both contestants due to Alex Shelley dropping out, and they went at it in a fun, fast-paced bout. Nothing too deep here; just two guys I normally don't have high hopes for having a good match.
And now, the updated list.

I've been going back and forth on the Tanaka/Hero match. Convince me, tainted!
Also, if I were to watch the Wrestling Odyssey show for Gulak/Thatcher, should I avoid the rest of the card like the unholy plague that awaits me?

I sure wasn't inclined to find out.
As for Hero/Tanaka, I really liked it as a sort of big bomb throwing match, but with good strikes instead of big moves, which isn't something you can see very often. And I buy Tanaka doing extended fighting spirit strike exchanges more than almost anyone else in the world because he comes across as a legitimate mad man doing them. Plus the awesome bomb tease was a nice touch.

Enjoyed the shit out of Rush v Shocker. I'll add it to my second half of the year list (currently: 1 match long) and consider it at the end of the year.

Nice lists guys. Have to catch up on some stuff. Particularly Ishii/Ibushi and the BOSJ.
Didn't know there'd even been an Ishii/Okabayashi match. Sounds delicious.
Definitely didn't expect to see a Tanaka/Hero match on Tainted's list. I better watch that too.

So here we are at the half-way point. Who have you guys got for MVP of the year, and if your list doesn't make it readily apparent, what's your top MOTYC?
I'm torn between Rush and Tomohiro Ishii for MVP; both make very strong cases for why they are an invaluable part of their respective rosters. My MOTY as it stands right now is a three-way tie between Ishii vs. Kota, Rush vs. Shocker, and Kingston vs. Icarus (though that last one is guilty of a HUGE amount of personal bias.)
Also, what's a match that you think no one checked out yet that you think they should?
HARASHIMA vs. Shigehiro Irie for me. Get on this and love it, you bastards!

MVP of both the last 6 months and the rolling 12 months from July 1st 2013: Tomohiro Ishii. Runner-up: Kota Ibushi.
Match of the year so far: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Tetsuya Naito
Match I Love That No One Checked Out (MILTNOCO): Akira Tozawa and Shingo Takagi vs. Don Fujii and Masaaki Mochizuki.

I only watch WWE but my MVP would be either Bryan or Rollins and the MOTY so far would be Shield/Wyatts.
A match that kind of got lost in the Wrestlemania/Daniel Bryan Show hype is the four way tag from the pre-show which is absolutely excellent.

Looks like Defrost, Tainted and I all agree on the top four matches from the G1 so far. Honma vs. Shibata & Ishii, Tanahashi/Shibata and AJ/Suzuki. Interesting to see you both went for different AJ matches (and quite different ones at that) for fifth spot. Personally I'd probably pick Nakamura/Ishii or Shibata/Nagata.
Will have to get around to watching Ishii/Ibushi now.

Hulk vs Tozawa was a very good match, especially with the pre-match video package. It was also one of the most blatant carry jobs (from Tozawa) I have seen in YEARS.

I wonder if we should do an all-encompassing MOTY vote this year instead of just WWE. When we first did it I thought it should be kept purely WWE because there simply weren't enough puro watchers to give it fair representation. Last year I think the WWE poll got about 15 voters. I reckon there's at least half that number who have seen their fair share of 2014 New Japan to knock up a list. Will think on it.

Defrost, did you watch the Survivor Series main event? You should. It would almost definitely make it in my top 10.
I watched Sting. Honestly after the Punk stuff I am in no particular mood to watch anything from that company at the moment.

Hulk vs Tozawa was a very good match, especially with the pre-match video package. It was also one of the most blatant carry jobs (from Tozawa) I have seen in YEARS.
I saw this match today. Yeah, it was all Tozawa wasn't it, genuinely felt like a man versus a mirror at times. I can't point to anything bad that Hulk did, it's just that he didn't seem to figure much in the story until the final stretch. I don't know enough about Dragon Gate though.
I added the Global League final to my overall list and am just waiting to see how the two Dangan Yankees tag matches in a day turned out ahead of the last NOAH show of the year then I'm ready to sort my list out. I rejigged since I last posted, all I can come to any solid assessment of is my #1. Hard year. Lot of quality though.
