Do I have to pick games I've played? :shifty:

The Rick

Your list you build it however you want. I will build my list from the PC games I've played. And yes, the mods I used will factor into my decisions.

Half life

Grimario
December 19th, 2013, 10:49 PM
Half life

Will definitely be in my list somewhere.

And that brings another question... how does Counter Strike/TF2 et al go? Are they to be considered games in their own right or are they mods that increase the awesomeness of Half Life?

Bert
December 19th, 2013, 10:52 PM
I think anything that was sold at one time should count as a game itself.

Grimario
December 19th, 2013, 10:59 PM
I think anything that was sold at one time should count as a game itself.

So you are saying that TF2 can't be entered as a stand alone?

Bert
December 19th, 2013, 11:06 PM
It hasn't always been free to play.

Grimario
December 19th, 2013, 11:23 PM
Mmm, so it hasn't. For some reason my brain went "Half Life Mod to F2P"... before realising that was TF Classic that was purely a HL mod whilst TF2 was bundled in The Orange Box before standalone before F2P.

Unreal Tournament 2004

The_Mike

I loved the sports vibe from UT2004, it really made you feel like you were part of some kind of online entertainment world of gibs. Sim City 2000 I mostly played on the PSX, and I felt 3000 surpassed it in every single way. SC4 was pretty good too, but I found it just a bit too tough to get into.

Kyle_242

At least one or two classic Sierra games are going to sneak onto my list. Those defined at least a couple years of my childhood.

Dave
December 20th, 2013, 3:58 AM
Civilization (probably III, though I could go for IV, V or II)
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Football Manager (well more likely one of the last SI Championship Manager ones, maybe 00/01)
DEUS EX

Obviously Half-Life has already been said. Total Annihilation will likely get a nod, and I feel that something from the Total War series should be there, I just don't know what.

Deus Ex, Portal 1 & 2, HL 1 & 2, Planescape: Torment, Diablo I/II, KOTOR 1/2, Mass Effect, Fallout 1/2/3, The Sims, Max Payne, one of the Hitman games, one of the FM/CM games, one of the Civs, Transport Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Theme Hospital, Duke Nukem 3d, World of Warcraft, TIE Fighter, Xwing vs TIE Fighter, Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim, Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, NWN, Bioshock, Age of Empires, The Witcher 1/2, Unreal Tournament, Dragon Age, Quake, Doom, Descent/Forsaken, Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri, a whole bunch of the HOMM games, some of the MM games, Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Siege 1/2, Red Faction Guerilla...

Fallout: New Vegas is better than Fallout 3.

The Rogerer
December 20th, 2013, 6:24 AM
This is a hard list. I mentally discount everything after, say, 2005, when I ended up mostly playing it on consoles anyway. I won't do one of those things where I say "Oh I played this on another system" and discount it, but I'm still going to heavily favour the SPIRIT of the PC.

It is, and although I finished it about 3 times, it never grabbed hold of my soul the say Fallout 3 did. Tricky one.

Worms.

One of my great LAN party stories revolves around a game of Worms. Well, at least it was being played, briefly, with no actual relation to the story.

The Rogerer
December 20th, 2013, 9:09 AM
I remember sitting up all night with Worms 2 at a friend's house with a bunch of school friends and because it was the 90s and he actually had internet, someone had put his desktop wallpaper as this naked old woman taking her false teeth out. After every round of Worms it would go back to the desktop and we'd be shocked once again.

New Vegas is prettier than Fallout 3 but I'd argue that it is an inferior game.

Looking forward to how this turns out. I only recently (last couple of years) discovered Bethesda and I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to good PC games. Hopefully this countdown will help educate me.

I've only ever had one period in my life where my PC was pimp enough to play proper computer games when they came out and that was back around the '00 mark or so. Other than that I've always been a console guy. I'm interested to see what pops up here but I don't think I'll submit a list since it would be so early '00s heavy.

VHS
December 20th, 2013, 6:48 PM
If I had to name the best PC games, it'd be based off how many times I've replayed them over the years:

1. Curse of Monkey Island
2. MDK2
3. Half Life 2
4. Worms
5. Deus Ex
6. Left 4 Dead 2
7. Duke Nukem 3D
8. Mass Effect 2
9. F.E.A.R.
10. Freedom Force
11. Oddworld: Abe's Exodus
12. Max Payne 2
13. Unreal Tournament '99
14. Quake 2
15. Skyrim

*Honorable mention: (Not a "PC" game, but still...) Descent II

Matty C
December 20th, 2013, 6:52 PM
If I went by that it would be Civilization III. I played that game constantly back in the day.

The Rick
December 20th, 2013, 7:42 PM
Some more games to think about...

Company of Heroes
Dawn of War: Warhammer 40K
Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends
Warcraft III
Half-Life 2
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead
Civilization IV
Battlefield 2
VVVVVV (liked it so much I paid $5 for it for my 3DS to play it again)
Di fucking ablo II

This isn't my final list, or even in order, but while I usually have to check other lists to help me brainstorm this time I was able to rattle off 15 tremendous games from the top of my head. It's going to be tough.

1. The Sims 2
2. Creatures
3. Neverwinter Nights
4. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
5. TIE Fighter
6. The Secret of Monkey Island
7. Diablo
8. Civilization IV
9. Theme Hospital
10. Morrowind
11. Unreal Tournament 99
12. Fallout: New Vegas
13. Sim City 3000
14. StarCraft
15. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2

This is difficult because there were loads of games I had on PC, which I could have had on PSX or PS2.

So I'll settle for ones which work best on PC, point and click stuff (command and conquer etc)

Also Football Manager should be very high on this list, but only if people vote for the same version.

So my number 1 will probably be "Football Manager (any year)". As it's basically the same game.

The_Mike
December 21st, 2013, 12:33 PM
If we do all the FMs as one, though, where do we draw the line? All the Unreal Tournaments are almost the same game. Eventually we can start sliding down the slope and I can cram all the Elder Scrolls games into one entry, which I wouldn't mind but it'd probably mess up the list a bit.

I still have so much stuff to play from the Humble Bundle and I am just feeling all nostalgic and wanting to go back and sink a billion hours into Oblivion or Neverwinter Nights again. Or Theme Hospital. Damn, the PC has always been such a great platform.

Your list you build it however you want. I will build my list from the PC games I've played. And yes, the mods I used will factor into my decisions.

Mods are such a huge factor. They're why KOTOR has topped my list before making the list. My list may be a bit odd as I'm going to try to favor so games I played on PC rank higher than those I may have played on console that were also on PC (BioShock Infinite immediately comes to mind as a recent case here.)

Games like Marathon, Descent, Wing Commander III, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, Doom, Hexen, Civilization, Sim City 2000 and others I played relentlessly on the computer as a kid will rank.

The_Mike
January 2nd, 2014, 12:25 PM
Playing through Bioshock: Infinite now. There's a chance it could squeeze its way onto my list. It's beautiful, with a pretty fascinating story so far, though I understand where people's comments about it being a mediocre shooter come from. I never quite feel like I'm sufficiently in control of any weapon, and aside from one vigor so far all the stuff's pretty generic.

So many good Star Wars games, too. I could probably do a top 15 of them alone. I miss old school LucasArts, they used to take such pride in making games that really gripped you and gave you a special world to play around in.

FM11 for me, the last one that I was truly addicted to.

I haven't decided what my number one is going to be yet, FM11, Civ 4 and Minecraft are the top contenders. Jesus I love Minecraft so much.

Best Star Wars game could make a fun mini list.

I don't really get the "mediocre shooter" vibe at all, but then most FPS that I play are either older or Halo so it's entirely possible that there's some much better fitting FPS feel that I just am completely unaware of.

Civ IV is fantastic. I tried Civ V but found it far too cartoony and for every new feature it seemed like they removed or overly simplified two or three more. Then came endless DLC...The change in unit stacking makes the game. As for the endless DLC, the first expansion pack definitely enhances the game. I've not yet played the second one, but I feel like it couldn't definitely improve a great game.

Civ 4 is still probably going to be in my list, but after a lot of Civ 5 this holidays that's probably going to go ahead of it.

Civ V is the better game in my opinion. Civ IV becomes a case of who can build the biggest stack of doom wheras V needs a bit more thought. The new expansion is great, it makes cultural play and diplomacy much more interesting.

X-Com is probably going to be my #1. I was thinking of putting the original, but I actually think the new one is better. It's very true to the original, it has pretty much everything the old one has, but it's so much cleaner.

Kyle_242

WoW has always been a weird one for me. It's by far the most popular MMORPG ever, to the point that nothing that comes after may ever top it as the entire genre may be fading with the game itself. But that seems to be the only thing going for it, during its reign it arguably did more HARM to PC games than good. Remember not too long ago when everyone was calling PC a dead console? WoW was cited as a big reason why...if you were a PC gamer, you were probably a WoW gamer, and didn't have time to play anything else. Not to mention all the failed and/or underwhelming WoW clones that followed in an attempt to get a piece of that pie.

It didn't really innovate anything, either, other than putting together a bunch of the better pre-existing ideas in MMO land, polishing it, and attaching a recognizable license. It's the Rolling Stones of PC gaming history.

If an MMO makes my list, it'll probably be EverQuest or Ultima Online. I reaallly want to put DAOC on there because I loved that game, but I can't deny that it was so, so bad.

JP
January 5th, 2014, 6:21 PM
Why?

Not a shot at LOTRO just legitimately curious.

Made me fall in love with the concept of MMO gaming. A brilliantly realised world, what is still the best defined class system I've found in an mmorpg, great story quests and instances, the kindest gaming community I've come across so far and the pioneers of the free-to-play model.

GW2, WoW and FF 14 will also probably make my list.

WoW will definitely be on my list. I got REALLY into it for awhile before stopping cold turkey. I only played a few months, but it consumed every second I wasn't at work. It was a full on addiction and once I was out, I refused to ever go back. It was so amazingly addictive.

I didn't get it at first either. I missed it by a few months, then jumped on my housemates account when he was off on holidays and was hooked. If all you did was power level to 60 then not partake in end game raiding, you missed out. The social aspect, particularly at end game with a consistent group of people was fantastic, up at odd hours PvPing with Americans and Brits, raiding end game content, levelling alts through nothing but instances. Was excellent, will definitely be on my list.

I'm another one that never got the hype of WoW. I played it for a week or so, found it pretty dull to be honest. Go here, kill some blobs, pick up some stuff, repeat. You can trade, I suppose, but beyond that it felt like nothing but a giant chat room with fancy buttons to press. It never felt like a cohesive world where I was forging my own destiny. Elder Scrolls Online looks like it is going the same way. Maybe I'm just not an MMO kind of person, but I adored Ultima Online. That plonked you down in a world that felt lived in, but that was in the 1990s, where imagination could do a lot of the work, and I wasn't so spoiled by great narratives like Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR.

I've been getting back into Skyrim in a big way. I keep wanting to go back to Oblivion as well, loved that environment so much, and I knew most places like the back of my hand. I bring it up because that's what I hope for in an MMO, and generally they don't seem to deliver. Instead of interesting areas to explore and learn, they are regions with specific things to exploit. Rather than roaming a world and finding my place in it, it seems to be just a series of colourful corridors where you murder mobs, grab loot and run back to sell it all. The context of a living, breathing world just isn't there for me, which is surprising when it's full of actual people, but those people are all doing the same thing. I was really disappointed with ESO, it's nothing like Elder Scrolls single player games at all. In Skyrim, recently I've been building myself a home and exploring some ruins and got into a mad fight with a giant who came lumbering into my garden. I hit him with chain lightning but my adopted son ran too close to him and got blasted too, and died. Serana tried to make me feel better by resurrecting his corpse and using it like a puppet (bless her) but after a while he crumbled into a pile of ash. In a modern MMO, I feel like I'd just be playing a pretty spreadsheet, trying to min-max my way to overcoming the giant, and to even have a home I'd have to have put in ludicrous amounts of grinding. I guess I just find stories come so much more readily in single-player games: online gaming always feels to me like a bunch of people scrambling to mine some artificial value out of the time and money they've put into the thing.

Kyle_242
January 5th, 2014, 11:50 PM
I played WoW off and on for several years (mostly off). I swore I was done with it, but kept relapsing every time an expansion came out. I only really enjoyed it when playing with real-life friends, and that's mostly because were were dicking around and not playing the game proper. It's pretty much all we could do since our levels were all out of whack.

But this:

It never felt like a cohesive world where I was forging my own destiny. Elder Scrolls Online looks like it is going the same way. Maybe I'm just not an MMO kind of person, but I adored Ultima Online.

absolutely sums up how I feel about the whole thing. Just feels like a whole bunch of people in their little streamlined paths racing to the end with little to no payoff. Granted, the PvP was fun, but DAOC did it better, and Ultima Online was more fun since you actually put quite a bit on the line to PK. I didn't do many raids, but from my experience original EverQuest was far more difficult and satisfying, probably because that game hated you and tried to make you quit at every turn, so a successful raid felt like landing on the moon.

I do "get" the appeal of WoW, it sort of has something for everyone, and it was really a glorified chat room for many guilds. But I never found the time you needed to invest to be worth it. And let's face it, the gameplay is boring, repetitive, and uninspired.

The_Mike
January 6th, 2014, 12:00 AM
Yeah, I can totally get the appeal of having this social space to play around with your friends, but they already have pubs and restaurants and outside for that sort of thing. As a game, it just seems like something to keep your hands busy while goofing around with pals. Maybe I just need more friends, but it seems a bit strange to have this social butterfly simulator wrapped in the trappings of fantasy RPGs, usually something known for relatively anti-social devotees. I always wondered if I was missing some great big aspect of the actual gameplay, but I really don't think so at this point, it's just clicking and killing while chatting to buddies and achieving that rush of cooperative success is the real selling point. So I guess I'm supposed to provide my own thrill by bringing friends, and it's just not what I'm looking for out of a game, especially one I have to pay a monthly subscription for.

Grimario

Kyle_242
January 6th, 2014, 12:15 AM
I guess my argument against it being on the list is basically this:

A) It didn't really do anything innovative, it just took the MMO concept, polished it, set it in an established universe, then played it extremely safe thereafter. I guess it gets credit for this, but at the same time I feel that it gets too much of it.

B) The fun part of the game had nothing to do with the actual game.

Grimario
January 6th, 2014, 12:58 AM
From playing an MMO perspective, my best gaming experience ever was the opening few levels (possibly first act?) of Age of Conan. It far surpassed any other MMO experience I had had. And then after you left whatever the first place was, it was absolute rubbish.

Recently I had been playing a bit of SWTOR and that is without a doubt my #1 complete MMO experience from a game playing perspective. It's in a universe I quite like (suck it, The Rick), the single player storylines are fantastic additions to what is an MMO and with the exception of one or two questing areas, I have never not enjoyed the planets stories or levelling. I've not played in a few months but am looking forward to jumping back in when I have finished moving house.

Then there is WoW. Which I will write more about if/when it appears on the list.

Pablo Diablo

Star Wars Galaxies was my only MMO. Played it in the early days too. Before there were Jedi. Naturally I was a bounty hunter because if you couldn't be a Jedi you would become Boba. Sad thing is I played it so much and stayed up really late. But it was virtually a PvE game for me. I've never really been able to get myself to properly join a guild or anything of the sort in any game outside of Fifa Clubs Rajah United For Life.

Like right now I'm playing DOTA 2 but I'm always just solo queueing.

JP
January 6th, 2014, 5:49 AM
I've tried twice now to get into SWTOR and while it's easily the most polished MMO I've ever played the problem seems to stem from - and given this is one of the reasons I praise LOTRO so much, a bit mental - it's free-to-play model and the community it's brought about. You try and enjoy the group story quests or instances with a random group and all you're likely to get is two minutes of "SKIP CUTSCENE, SKIP CUTSCENE, FUCKING SKIP!" just before they quit and leave you fucked.

You can't tell the difference between playing FIFA and clicking mobs in WOW? I didn't say all online gaming is shit or pointless or anything, just WOW and similar games that I've given a go are really light on gameplay and make their money selling an opportunity to hang out with people.

B) The fun part of the game had nothing to do with the actual game.

Here is how my list is shaping up. This is the hardest list I've ever had to do, cutting it down to 15 is criminal.

Tried to mix influential games with games I just happen to like. Kills me to put StarCraft #3 as I never cared for RTS, but the list just looked wrong otherwise.

1. Half-Life
2. Counter-Strike
3. StarCraft
4. X-COM: Enemy Unknown
5. Ultima IV
6. Doom 2
7. Civilization II
8. Deus Ex
9. Sim City
10. Tie Fighter
11. Baldur's Gate II
12. Defense of the Ancients (DotA)
13. Diablo II
14. Rogue
15. Blade Runner

ALTERNATES:
EverQuest
Star Control 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Day of the Tentacle
Master of Orion 2
Portal
The Secret of Monkey Island
Space Quest IV
Fallout
Quake II
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Atty

It'll be interesting to see how Tie Fighter does. I can see it on most lists. I see you have Doom 2—I debated using that or Doom and decided to go with the first one.

Kyle_242
January 23rd, 2014, 1:23 PM
I think Tie Fighter will be pretty high just by attrition. I imagine it's pretty high on some lists, I might even move it up mine a bit. I went with Doom II just because I felt it was pretty much the same game as Doom but refined and improved, and it seems to be the one people speak most fondly about when talking about the good ol' Doom days. Also, super shotgun.

One thing I noticed when putting this together is that it seems like PC's an odd duck in that there were plenty of really good games that just weren't all that influential (Tie Fighter, Jagged Alliance, even X-COM). Having Rogue and Blade Runner back-to-back is kind of funny, since Rogue is an incredibly old game that had remarkable influence, while Blade Runner had pretty much zero influence but may be the best adventure game ever made.

I went for games that worked best on a computer.

I also didn't pick two games from the same series, which I could have done quite easily.

With a fairly smaller number of lists and a lot of people who look at PC games in very different ways, I suspect this list will work out wildly unpredictable. If I had to put money on something for number one, it would be Portal 2, but I think all it will take is a couple of people placing the same Footy Manager really high to cause an upset.

I know some people have shown theirs already (I showed my first draft but it did change before I submitted it) but I think it'd be great if we all share our lists eventually, so we can all have a look at the different ways we approached it.

:wtf:

This is the game with a billion extra levels and things on the Steam Workshop, right? I just don't see what's so 'console' about it. Then again, I don't get what makes a game 'console' in general. PCs have gamepads now. Sure, a game can be on a console, and do very well, but I don't see any reason for a console to be part of its nature but the arbitrary decision to make it exclusive or not.

Atty
January 28th, 2014, 4:34 PM
A wide release on consoles at launch and playing it exclusively on consoles tends to help make it a console game.

I don't think you get my point. Obviously it was a console game in the sense that it was released on a console. But when it's released on PC as well, what makes one think of it as predominately a console game, to the exclusion of even considering putting it on a PC list? It's a bit like refusing to rank The Godfather on a films list because you think of it as a book. If you never actually got around to playing it on PC, sure, I can understand deciding against including it, but that's not what people are saying they did.

I don't see why you feel the need to get snarky over a simple question, and I don't see how you can miss "I look at it more as a console game" as being something you could easily read as meaning "I'm not putting it on my PC list because it's a console game to me", because that's what you said. I was exaggerating for effect saying people won't even consider putting it on a PC list, but they didn't do it and they said they didn't do it because it's 'more' console. Which is the question I'm asking: "what makes it a console game and not a PC game?" Cause, you know, it's on PC.

I guess I'm just reading your tone all wrong, my bad. Like I said, I get that someone would not vote for it on PC because they only played it on console, but the phraseology people were using to describe it as 'more of a console game' reads to me like that makes it less of a PC game. And that part I don't get, because it was always equally both. It's not important anyway, I was just asking and I think I have got your answer a few times now.

I need at least two more submissions to make a viable list. I'll go out and recruit some people when I get home later tonight.

I've changed the thread title - might encourage a few people who'd said say they would but had forgotten about it.

Out of curiosity how many lists do you have that 2 more would make a difference?

The Rick
February 5th, 2014, 5:14 PM
I have 13 lists (i was counting a corrected list as an entry earlier). I really want 15 to get a decent sample. three games in my top 5 are kind of niche games, and shouldn't make the top 10. Currently they are.

And with so few my ratings of the KOTORs due to the time I spent modding them could throw the list right off.

I threw out some lines. We shall see if we get any bites. Would love to hear from some regulars that haven't submitted yet.

I had to sit out putting in a list here due to the fact that I honestly haven't played that many PC games. At most, I would be putting on that 101 Dalmations Point and Click game and the Toy Story interactive video book or whatever the fuck you'd call it.

Though, the Rugrats point-and-click/puzzle game was pretty fun. Probably also incredibly basic if you're an adult, since I haven't played it in years.

Wasn't this the runaway winner for the next poll? And we can't find 15 people to provide a list?

Would it help if I provided two?

Atty

I could have provided two more if Miotch weren't such a grumpy goose.

Much like 80's cartoons, I feel incredibly sad for anyone who didn't grow up with PC games.

There were only 6 votes for Best PC game... in a poll that had less than 20 total votes.

Don't worry about it. DVDA is going to be a guy and get me a list in a day or few. I'll get another list.

Anything you play on your Microsoft Windows computer without an emulator is a PC game.

I probably should have put Chip's Challenge.

Some interesting ones there. Can I ask why The Sims 3 over 2? I loved 2 but found 3 basically took a step back and then asked for you to buy everything again via microtransactions. But I've not put a huge amount of time into 2. Love the series as a whole, anyway.

Do you still play Everquest 2?

Same reason I prefer Civ 5 over 4. It's slicker and a bit easier to play in general. All good games though.

Haven't played Everquest 2 in about a year or so. It's always tempting to jump back into it but I just got into Second Life. I'm pretty hooked so far.
