View Full Version : Raw 7/1 Champ v Champ

No Raw thread thus far so thought I'd blast one up.

Lots of interesting stuff happening:

John Cena v Alberto Del Rio in a champ v champ match - will Big Mark or Dolph get themselves involved

Heyman guys Punk and Axel take on the PTP - will they stay on the same page or is the big fella Brock gonna show up.

MITB - both matches have been announced now, will there be some confrontations between Bryan/Kane/Orton and how about the heel match, they gonna start going at it tonight,

Zeb put a message out saying he'll be there with Cesaro but how about Swagger.

How will the Shield react to another loss?

Good little build up segment, the main swerve playing here is that Kane is gonna snap and destroy Bryan stopping him from winning the briefcase. With talk of them prolonging the Henry feud then I couls see them giving the case to either RVD or Orton for a period and have Bryan have his blow-off with Kane instead.

RVD is newly back and orton has never had the case.

It certainly didn't help that ADR was bland as hell as a face. I'd venture to say that if Rey Mysterio were the champ when the Zeb character was created it would have been leaps and bounds better than how it turned out with ADR.

WWE's roster hasn't been this good since 2002 when they had bought out WCW and ECW, had all the Attitude Era guys, and also had the next generation of stars (Cena, Orton, Batista, Lesnar) coming up through the ranks. 2002 is probably the greatest collection of talent in wrestling history. This year seems similar to a year like 1992, when they still had all the Hogan-era guys (Hogan, Savage, Warrior, Piper) but the midcard was full of the New Generation (Michaels, Hart, Yokozuna, Razor Ramon). In a few years, we'll be looking back at this year as a time when they had legends who could still go (Undertaker, HHH, Lesnar), top guys in their primes (Cena, Bryan, Orton, Punk) and a new generation of stars on the rise (Shield, Big E, Wyatt).

Pretty pedestrian RAW this week. Usually I'd give a run down on stuff but there wasn't much I feel was really worth addressing. I did like that they did the WWE/World champ packages to tie-in with the champ vs. champ main event although even so, the main event really didn't feel like that big of a deal. I also really liked how much they promoted the Wyatt family and the fact that they ended the show on that seems to imply they're gonna be a big deal. Can't help but think, however, it'll just be Bray cutting a promo and squashing Zack Ryder...although, even that would be pretty good. Hoping they make a pretty significant impact.
Mark Henry's promo was pretty good and again dragged down by the goddamn whats...loved the end of it with him getting all up in the camera, pretty intimidating, felt like he was gonna come right out of my screen.
Other than that, fairly meh show.
Bring on next week and the Wyatt family. :hyper:

Forgot to mention the Ryback/Miz match was kind of off-putting. I'm willing to see how it fits into the bigger picture before I crap all over it but on it's own, it made Ryback look like a puss. I get that that's more or less what they're trying to do to some extent...but even so, it seems odd and a little damaging to his character. If he's trying not to going into MITB injured, so he called it off, that's kind of smart (and what I believe JBL alluded to) but they'd have to make that a bit clearer next week...maybe have a confrontation with him and Jericho where he explains that while Jericho just continues to underline the 'Cryback' schtick. I assume the leg will be the focus of their match, with Jericho trying to target it, Ryback looking vulnerable but ultimately winning. I can already envision him marching around for Shellshocked while the commentators scream about how impressive it is considering his leg. If that goes down, I won't be too bothered with what happened here.

The Law
July 4th, 2013, 12:17 PM
It was definitely supposed to make him look like a pussy. They seem to be going in a similar direction that they did with Brock Lesnar in 2003, when he tapped out to Angle and Benoit. Basically, his character was that he was a big monster who could beat up jobbers and midcarders, but couldn't handle himself in a fight against the top guys. Having Ryback be a big monster heel wasn't getting him any heat, so I like that they're trying something different. It also references the fact that he hasn't won a PPV match in a year. He's a guy who looks like Tarzan and hits like Jane. It's kind of an ingenious character, because everyone hates someone who fails to use their potential. Especially when it's physical potential. I remember reading an essay a few years ago about the strange fact that back in the 1980s everyone hated Ralph Sampson. Sampson was a great college basketball player and pretty damn good pro (four time All Star, led the Rockets to the NBA Finals in 1986). But everyone felt that he had failed to live up to his potential. They were probably right, he was 7'4 and incredibly quick for a guy that size. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his pro career.

So that was a very long-winded way of saying that I think Ryback could get over as a heel who has the potential to be great, but is overrated and whines a lot about not getting enough respect. Because everyone hates an underachiever.

Badger
July 4th, 2013, 4:43 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong here but I don't think Ryback has won a PPV match ever, even when he was Skip Sheffield.

It's good that they're trying something different with his character, but he does need credibility too. At this point, he's not over enough where he can lose a lot but one or two big wins later he's a serious threat like the likes of a Kane or Jericho for example. He does need some big wins.

mth
July 4th, 2013, 4:45 PM
He's won a few PPV matches when he was facing guys like Hawkins/Reks, etc.

He definitely ought to win against Jericho, I think. Either in the way I mentioned previously or have him be faking the severity of the leg injury this whole while to lure Jericho into a false sense of security.

Badger
July 4th, 2013, 4:50 PM
Oh yeah, I was thinking back to the Cell match with Punk as his first proper PPV match as Ryback. Forgot he had PPV squashes before that.

Losing to Henry was probably the stupidest out of all his PPV losses (don't get me wrong I love Mawk), and even more insulting was the way it happened. If he gets his momentum back, I'd like to see them run with the fact that Cena's never pinned even though it will inevitably result in Cena pinning him.

Fanny Batter
July 4th, 2013, 4:59 PM
Nah, in this carnation of the character, he's done. They've killed him. Best thing they can do is slow burn a face turn by sticking him as some heel's muscle, he's far better in that role and a dominating turn and destruction of his tormentor would kill months of bad booking.

Badger
July 4th, 2013, 5:24 PM
So basically another Batista? If they'd done that earlier before breaking out on his own then yeah I'd agree but I think they've gone too far with him now to have him be a sidekick again.

Andy
July 4th, 2013, 5:44 PM
If they have Jericho beat him it's clear they've completely given up on him. I'm not sure that they've completely killed him yet but I'm struggling to see a scenario where he picks momentum up and gets back to the top of the card.

The loss to Henry really was stupid. Especially when they had him start challenging Cena right after. I know that wasn't always the plan but there was still no reason for him to lose. I think they should've gotten him away from The Shield sooner too if they weren't going to have The Shield lose any of those big matches.

The Rogerer
July 5th, 2013, 4:49 AM
I love Dutch Mantel and he's a phenomenal talker, but this Tea Party character just doesn't work. Very few wrestling fans care about politics. His political speeches draw no response from the crowd. Swagger has not gotten over at all in the last few months with him. They need to just drop the political aspects of the character and make him a maniacal, sociopathic villain. This gets closer to the state of the WWE at the moment.

The Zeb Coulter character isn't working because he's gone bizarrely neutral with it by aligning with Cesaro. Welcoming formal immigration and not approving of illegal immigration isn't going to upset too many people, and if he doesn't have someone like Del Rio to unjustly mock then there's nothing terribly negative about it. The other problem is that he's bringing up an anti-government stance at a time when most in the US are starting to have serious problems with how government is running, but it's still played like a heel thing. It's not as if he's lecturing or boring people either.

They made him to be like Glenn Beck if they wanted that character, they have to make him much more persuasive and subversive. Picking on a lot of the non US roster isn't going to work as they're usually heels and not the most popular people as it is. He needs to focus on the enemy within, create enemies, persuade people and continue with the brainwashed Swagger angle where Swagger gets asked to do more and more irrational things.

The larger point is that you have to work very hard to get an effective heel these days, and yet they don't seem to be trying beyond Dutch's natural charisma. It seems like the crowd really doesn't care about faces or heels - they will welcome anyone back and endorse a turn within a week. With Kane about to chokeslam Bryan, the crowd was egging them on. They like them both - they just want to see something happen. Perhaps the crowd is getting hungry rather than having things teased out over weeks.
