It really says something that New Japan can run a full G1 with no outside talent, (beyond those that are regulars for them anyway) and have it look ridiculously stacked from top to bottom.

So, Nakamura vs. Ibushi. I'm quite excited for that one.

Devitt/Shibata should be really interesting. You never get to see Shibata wrestle people who are smaller than he is.

We got a problem. Looks like the final won't be on iPPV because it will be on TV Asahi

Because then it will either be a long time before we see or we will never see it

Hero!
July 18th, 2013, 10:37 PM
For why? Does no one upload shit from tv asashi? All my toku is on tv and people have rips up an hour after it airs. Hell, if anything, we can watch it on a keyhole as it airs.

Defrost
July 18th, 2013, 10:40 PM
You know I was going by the history of how long it takes on BS Asahi the Satellite Channel they have. I have watched Tokyo Dome highlights on keyhole before though so you are probably right.

So no worries then. Actually it's better since it'll be free I guess.

Hero!

Never fear, Hero! knows how to watch Japanese shit. Fuck, if it came down to it, I could get someone in Japan to just record it off tv for us, lol.

Well my fears were so completely unfounded because as it turns out all 9 shows will be on iPPV. Right now you can buy the whole lot for $150. Which is about $16 a show. Hopefully they offer individual shows too because I got the plummer coming in so I ain't got $150.

Shibata to win it for me. Would prefer Nakamura or Naito though.

I think Nakamura beats Okada to set up for Wrestle Kingdom.

thesamuelcooke
July 31st, 2013, 4:56 PM
Interesting to see where Devitt fits in around Wrestle Kingdom time. Him and Naito to become fixtures in the ME prominently, unless they want to keep Naito going after the NEVER belt and finally give Goto a run at the very top.

I would be shocked if Naito isn't Devitt's next feud. It's a great fit for both.

Well Tanahashi is basically a fancy job guy lately, so it'd make sense with Ishii's push to credibility.

It has less to do with all that than the building they booked it in. In the end Tanahashi vs Shibata is going to be for a spot in the Finals.

By the way tomorrow's show has the potential to be epic.

I love the idea that Shibata and KENTA are training together and that KENTA is teaching him how to use the Go 2 Sleep. If they start putting that over in this tournament, then I think you're right about the Shibata win.

Day 1 of the G1 was a solid show. Every match was good to very good. Nothing amazing but every single match was above average.

Day 2 of the G1 might be the best wrestling show I have seen all year. Shinsuke and Suzuki I was in love with. Goto and Okada had their best match togther. Lance Archer two shows in a row having an awesome match. Kojima and Shibata was the goods. And the main event. If not for Tanahashi and Okada in April this would be my run away match of the year.

This is one big ol confusing tournament, but im trying to keep up. Devitt vs Archer sounds good. I'm interested in Ishii vs Tanahashi since it seems to be only match to go somewhat long.

How was Devitt/Okada? Really surprised that they were put together again so soon, especially with Devitt winning.

I liked it. Their title match was better, but still a good match.

What exactly do you find confusing?

August 2nd, 2013, 10:20 PM
Just the structure of the bracket and set-up of the matches. Like, who faces who next and how anyone advances in this thing.

They are separated into two blocks of 10 wrestlers. Everyone in the block wrestles each other. 2 points for a win. 1 point for a draw. 0 points for a loss. Whoever has the most points in each block at the end goes to the final match.

Yeah Day 3 was not very good. But Day 4 is amazing. I think it may just be a pacing thing. Day 1 wasn't a world beater then you had Day 2. Day 3 was kinda boring then Day 4 happened. I think it is just a matter of if they went all out on every show no way half these guys make it to Sunday.

Up to Tanahashi/Devitt on day 4, it really is an incredible show. However I think too much is being made of Ishii/Shibata. It's still a very good match, but as a match built around over the top violence there's plenty of Japanese matches on that level or even worse. Which isn't to say it wasn't violent and stiff as hell, of course it was, but the buzz about it being something unprecedented is just odd. I don't think it's really a very strong MOTYC but still definitely something of a MOTYC and awesome to watch.

Naito is 0-1 in G1 Finals losing to Nakamura in 2011
Tanahashi is 1-2 in G-1 Finals beating Nagata in 2007 and losing to Tenzan in 2004 and Kojima in 2010

So Naito to win the G1 on his big injury comeback and rekindle his feud with Okada?

Defrost
August 11th, 2013, 4:31 AM
Depends. If the plan is like last year and the winner gets the Tokyo Dome title shot then Tanahashi is winning. If not then Naito.

I am a total mark for non tournament matches on tournament shows. My favorite part of King of the Ring 1993 was Money Inc and the Headshrinkers vs Smoking Gunns and the Steiners. Or maybe Shawn Michaels vs Crush. One or the other.

it at least had a hot ending. i hated a lot of the beginning but it got fun enough towards the end. still probably my least favorite match of the night and a pretty low note to end a really great run of shows on.

oh well, it was quite the week of shin nihon puroresu. well i still do have day 8 to watch. show overall: 10/10.

Aside from this tournament in not very familiar with Naito's work. Any must watch matches, Deforest??

I didn't get to watch this live, but I'm gonna buy it for the replay. And hearing that Tainted hated it is actually encouraging, as I generally like everything that he doesn't in Japanese wrestling. Naito winning isn't anything I expected, but seeing him through the tournament, it really makes sense. He's kind of the natural successor to Tanahashi down the road, and this would have started earlier if not for the injury.

I fell asleep during the 6-Man Tag match. Naito winning makes the most sense, but I'm still not too thrilled about it. I have yet to really warm up to Naito. I'll have to watch the match, though, and see how that went down.

Naito has never been my favorite, but the more I see his matches, the more I understand all the buzz about him being a genius at putting matches together. In 3 years, I think he'll be having incredible matches.

I plan on catching up on some of the days soon once I finish Kizuna Road. 2, 4, the beginning of 9, and 8 were definitely in my crosshairs. Kojima/Tanahashi sounds like it could be a blast for Day 1. I might just seek out the specific matches I want to watch if time's on the pressing side.

I REALLY Dug the Kojima/Okada match. The story was told so well, and then finishing stretch was epic. I might watch that again when watching Day 9.

how do you hardcore NJ fans feel about the tanahashi/okada match compared to their other matches? i just watched it for the second time and actually loved it, thought it was much better than the match meltzer gave five stars (though i did like that match, but not a whole lot). the end stretch was pretty off the charts and okada's selling was legit masterful. though it is kinda dampened by some stretches where it's clear their biding their time for the time limit draw, and okada's extended run of offense around the middle of the match was pretty shitty.

I thought it was the best match they've had outside of the match where Tanahashi won the belt back. It really expanded on the idea of the Invasion Attack match. I don't think any pairing of guys have turned in matches this great this consistently since the 90s.

really though ddt, i'd strongly suggest watching at least days 4, 8 and 9 in full. they'd be very strong show of the year contenders in any year in wrestling history. day 4 is a show of all time contender imo. day 8 might be. day 9 would be if it had a strong motyc. day 2 is also very, very much worth watching and would be a decent show of the year contender any given year.

Ibushi/Yano was a fun opener. Good showing. Archer/Ishii was a solid told story in the match, with them playing up on Ishii being the smaller guy. I'm REALLY looking forward to get into the meat of this thing, though.
