I am hearing all kinds of rave reviews about Tanahashi/Anderson. Is it really that good?

Hiroshi Tanahashi convinced a crowd that had sat on its hands for 3 hours to get delirious over the idea of seeing Karl Anderson win the IWGP Title. What does that tell you?

Everything else has only ever just gotten really good. Even Tanahashi/Anderson was only so-so (though that was entirely Anderson's fault with his limited offense and his spamming his finish because its one of the only four moves he knows that's over); crowd was better than the match.

I would definitely say Cena vs Punk,there aren't many matches now days where i get so invested and get into the near falls,and even though i everyone kind of knew Cena would win there were two or three occasions where i thought Punk would pick up the win :yes:

Thanks for the recommendation I really liked that match. The first fall was suitably violent and then a wild third fall to cap it. Once I got past expecting the first fall to end quickly, I'm used to CMLL plowing through the first two falls as fast as possible, and Estrada's pants I was totally into it. Also Chico Che looks like a tall mini if that makes any sense.

defrost, check out the terrible/rush match. its a lucha match with sort of an odd infusion of puro style. rather unique.

The main problem with Rush vs Terrible that some people might be confused with at first is that it is almost wrestled in this bizarro "rudo vs rudo" format, despite the most hated of the two technically being the technico. Now, I still think it is a hell of a match (obviously given my placement of it) but for someone coming in it might be jarring.

Watched Tanahashi vs. Anderson & Devitt. The Anderson match strayed into overkill towards the end for me but I enjoyed it and I like what they've been doing with Anderson lately. Having a credible gaijin challenger from within the company who isn't a monster is kind of a novelty and I'm looking forward to him challenging Okada at some point over the course of the year (banking on Okada getting a proper long reign). The Devitt match was good too and also something of a novelty - the Junior Champ giving the all conquering heavyweight ace something to think about. I vaguely remember a prior match between the two being solid but not feeling like as big a deal. Anyway, it was fun.

Okada/Tanahashi IV and Shinskay/Saku are my undisputed top two. Shinskay/Smith might actually be third. Now going to get on that ISHII SHIT.

Finally watched Okada vs. Tanahashi Round IV. My thoughts? It was good; hell it was great. However, I have three huge concerns that keep me from considering it a GOAT contender:

1.) The Red Ink is awful; legit one of the worst submission holds I've seen. Most of Okada's submissions are actively terrible and drama-draining (that attempted seated Cattle Mutilation springs immediately to mind) but the Red Ink is a move that can't even be applied correctly half the time, and when you are doing a spot that requires you to snap it on in an instant, well, you do the math.

2.) Okada was a bit...'inconsistent' is not the right word, perhaps unconvincing? That's not right either. What I'm trying to get at is that, while he did an adequate job convincing me that his arm was hurt, save for a few Tanahashi-led sequences and the part where he switched his elbow pad to the bad arm, Okada didn't do a lot to convince me that his arm was hampering his chances in the match. Like, he didn't engage in some strike exchanges with his 'good' arm where he was hopelessly outmatched, and needed the 'bad' arm to mount an effective comeback.

And finally, a bit spoilery...

3) If they had taken away the Red Ink shit (easily the worst parts of the match for me) and otherwise had this match move for move, but had the High Fly Flow-Slingblade-Dragon Suplex as a finish at the Dome this year, this might have been everything Defrost says it is. It is the perfect deconstruction of a rookie sensation's offense and his over-reliance on a singular move, in this case the Rainmaker. If they had this match at the Dome, I might even be a bit more forgiving of all this Red Ink bullshit, as it would be some young punk's desperate bid to expand his offense after being outed as a one trick pony. Sadly, that wasn't the end we got, and instead of his new sensation Red Ink submission, he just wins the way he always does, with the Rainmaker, after having his arm worked over for the better part of 30 minutes.


Still, even in my Negative Nancy Nevers opinion, this is definitely a match you should check out. :yes:

wow i really liked that. although it did feature some marked examples of one of my biggest pet peeves in modern japanese wrestling: japanese wrestling incongruously importing fanciful US indie moves into their movesets. like Goto's flipping face-slam thing and Shibata's DVD into the backbreaker. ugh. but still excepting that stuff i though it was great and loved the ending. should do well on my list when i rewatch a bunch of stuff and make a more sensible one.

Did you like Cesaro's 2/3 falls match with whatever they're calling Generico? I was disappointed.

I think everyone was disappointed with that because they cut out about 10 minutes of it. It was still decent though.

I loved Cesaro in that gauntlet match with Dragon. Ryback was really good in it too. They should have pushed him harder when they had the chance.

I tried watching the Sami Zayn/Antonio Cesaro bout but it didn't hold my interest as much as Bryan/Cesaro did.

Sami Zayn seems to have a decent amount of charisma but his offence needs a bit of work. In my mind he's essentially a midget version of Christian.

You know after hearing about it for years and not seeing it, I just recently (about 6 months ago) spent about a week and a half watching their entire series of matches that spread out over 2 years. I think there was 8 available on YT. Anyway, I don't remember which one was my favorite, but I DO remember specifically that everyone's fav (6/9/95) actually was NOT my favorite of the series, great match as they all were, but not my fav.

Don't really watch much WWE beyond what I see hyped up. There was a Shield match earlier in the year where they lost for the first time and Dragon beat them that I watched that people were raving about that I thought wasn't all that good, and never really trusted rave reviews for the Shield after that.

Check out the Goldust/Cody vs Rollins/Reigns matches. They are both sensational.

The six man against Bryan, Kane and Kofi is brilliant. The one against Bryan, Kane and Orton isn't as good but it's a brilliant part of the story.

I don't really get the love for that Nakamura/Marufuji match. I mean, I don't like the Okada/Tanahashi matches as much as a lot of people but I get why they are so praised. Nakamura/Marufuji though is just a reasonably fun match with a couple cool spots. Even looking at it from the perspective of someone who really likes workrate-heavy wrestling with exciting homestretches, just on that criterion alone something like Cena/Rollins from last Smackdown seems significantly better to me.

To round out the top notch tag/multi-mans of the year, also check out the Americas/Sandow v. Cena/Rhodes matches from Smackdown 11/01(air date) and the next RAW, because they're really awesome and feature John Cena losing his mind and deciding to be a MOVEZ wrestler for the nights.

So I watched the PPV match with Dusty on the outside which was solid. Then I watched the match where the Cody and Goldust won the tag titles. I was really into that match. Until the finish. Now I'm just annoyed. Watched 30 seconds of the Hell in a Cell 3 way and that was just so stupid I tapped out. I think I have hit my WWE quota for awhile.

By the way Cody and Goldust's theme is fucking garbage

If you had been watching at the time the finish made perfect sense. And what was stupid about the three way other than the commentators not knowing the rules?

The rules were my issue. Once the Shield tagged themselves out and from what I had gathered, from the commentary you are know telling me was flawed, was that if neither the Rhodes's or Usos tagged the Shield back in they were shit out of luck which just seemed painfully stupid to me.

Keep watching the match Defrost, it's very good. Finishes with a pretty high end WWE-style "workrate" home stretch which I'd be surprised if you didn't like.

What was your issue with the end to the tag switch, just that Big Show was involved? For the beginning of the "Authority" angle, Big Show's involvement was actually hot as shit with him playing a secondary supporting role to Bryan. Even the smarky Montreal crowd was like 1999-levels hot for his segments during the RAW they had there. It would of course be ruined beyond hope shortly after though.

So I watched it. It was a fun match. I really liked the Usos. But the psychology issues between the having to tag different teams, and according to Cole it was no DQ which always annoys me when tag matches are no DQ but not worked Tornado Style. Why are you patiently waiting for a tag in a no DQ match? What can happened to you if you just go into the ring? Probably my biggest pet peeve watching wrestling.

I kind of always rationalized it as the teams logically thinking they are both specialists in the tag team style, so they both decide it would be in their best interests to work the match that way rather than turn it into a free for all which isn't in their element. But that's just an exercise in sophistry, because it's wrestling so I don't ask for it all to make too much sense.

Can't fault your criticisms there Defrost, I've always had the same issue with triple threats being no DQ. However if you can accept the weird rules it really is a great match.

Also I can understand your skepticism about the finish to the tag titles match with Big Show but believe it or not, at that point Show was genuinely more over than he's ever been in his career. It made perfect sense and as you can see from the crowd reaction it was a huge moment.
