Any particular reason for the retirement or just age?

Cewsh

He's basically held together with string. He battled cancer, degenerative knees, and a completely fucked up neck and back in recent years. So he feels like he only has one match left in him.

Defrost
February 21st, 2013, 3:21 PM
You forgot that his elbows don't work anymore either

Cewsh
February 21st, 2013, 4:21 PM
Yep, that too. And since his matches are 50% absorb insane punishment and 50% dole out insane punishment, not having any functioning joints is kind of an issue.

He isn't like Foley, who can barely even walk, he just can't really do matches anymore. I think he would continue on if the neck issues didn't worry his doctors so much.

Probably not a surprise but the show is sold out without a match announced yet

"Four Men GET Together"

Looking forward to that bastard Sugz getting some blue justice.

As for the main, bit surprised that it's a) an 8-man and b) at the dream team's opponents. Would have guessed at a BURNING foursome featuring maybe KENTA or Honda or Shiga facing Mutoh, Sasaki and friends. Less surprised that Kawada hasn't been persuaded to come back for it. But hey, it's Kobashi's final match.

That entrance, man. :(

KENTA doing all he could to rile Kobashi right off the bat was great, arrogantly posing with the belt right in his face, telling his partners he was going to start this and slapping Kobashi with no respect.

Go getting cheap chops in on Akiyama and him just being all OVER TO YOU KENSUKE. :D

I'm finished. Sheesh.

Honda got a hug. :happysad:

Commentators choking up. Even fucking Chono was gone behind those sunglasses.

Arigato Kobashi!

That match was incredible. I broke when, during the hot final few minutes, RIGHT after a believable near fall that EVERYONE thought was it, they show a little kid in the audience crying because he thought Kobashi had just lost. Incredible stuff. Tell me, please, what are the series of 3-4 tag matches that get discussed in the "best matches of all time" talks from 1996ish? I wanna look them up, haven't seen them in many years. I know they involve Kobashi, Misawa, Akiyama, & Kawada? But I don't remember the teams and which specific ones get fawned over. Anybody can tell me?

And still would love video of the whole show when it comes up...

Ringo
May 12th, 2013, 3:56 PM
The two tags which usually feature in "best match ever" discussion are 6/9/95 Kawada & Taue vs. Misawa & Kobashi and the 96 RWTL Final from 12/6/96 which is the same combination but Akiyama in Kobashi's place. Holy Demon Army/Misawa & Kobashi happened 10 times in total, was taped 8 times and I think Meltzer rated like 5 of those 8 at *****. About six of them are top class.

Other 90s tag matches featuring Kobashi that are rated super highly are 5/25/92 with Kikuchi against Furnas & Kroffat and with Akiyama vs. Dr. Death & Johnny Ace in '96 and The Untouchables (10/23/99).

Thank you. Former Japanese Prime Minister got a big pop! I was disappointed that Hansen and Laurinaitis didn't actually appear - I thought I'd read that Johnny made the flight. Cool to see Stan's message all the same.

Also, Kawada looked either a little nervous or sad or unenthusiastic. I couldn't decide. He whispered something in Kobashi's ear but rather than any sort of embraced he just bowed a lot and looked like he wanted to get out of the ring. Them Japanese are different!

PS. I love Blazin'
