I love Dragonball to death, but realistically 5 minutes is probably as much time as they'll dedicate to the story. Maybe 10, depending on how much time they focus on Goku straining and grunting while he powers up, especially for that *one last big move* he always seems to come up with.

Like I said, love the series, have since I was 8 and Dragonball was on WB Sunday mornings. It just gets a bit predictable. That said, i'll still watch this. It's fucking DBZ.

If it's at least as good as the first Broly Movie, it will be worth it for me. Otherwise it will feel like more of an average movie affair with more length.

The first Broly movie is fucking Amazing. Assuming you like Dragonball. The only thing that could have made it better would have been if someone not named Goku had been the one who finished things. Otherwise that movie is great. Hell it's right in the pocket of good DBZ movies that ended (debatably) with Bojack.

Also it's really not any more predictable than any Shonen. It's not like you ever have to ask who's gonna land the final blow in Naruto, Yuyu Hakasho, Bleach, Sailor Moon (not a Shonen but still), or Full Metal. That's just how things go.

Episode of Bardock. That was a direct to video thing. I think it got bundled with the Jump Tour short from a few years ago on DVD and maybe Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans too.

Toriyama's opinion on GT seems to change by the week. I wouldn't trust him to stay on the hate wagon for more than a year or two. That's just how he rolls. Preview screenings have started so spoilers are popping up now

Going through spoilers and what is interesting is that over the years there have been guidebooks with back stories and original memos and art work and interviews with Toriyama over the years called Daizenshuu or Chōzenshū. There are elaborate explanations of the God hierarchy and such with characters never mentioned before in Dragonball. And it was in one of them that Toriyama said that Mr Satan was just a stage name and his real name is Mark which is a play on the Japanese word for devil. One of the revelations in the first guidebook was that the Dragonball world is in the 7th Universe. That comes up in this movie.

And as a backstory for the kind of character Birusu is Toriyama was asked why Kaio's planet is so small. He said that once it was much bigger but one day Birusu came over to play video games and lost so he destroyed the planet and Kaio salvaged what he could.

The spoiler is true. Super Saiyan God appeared when 6 Pure Hearted Saiyans came together to stop bad Saiyans in the far flung past. Tarble, from the Jump Super Anime Tour Special is mentioned when they realize that Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, and Gohan are only 5 saiyans but earlier in the movie it is revealed Videl is pregnant when she is accidentally shot by Mai of the Pilaf Gang because Gohan is drunk off his ass and acting like an idiot, and Dende notices when he heals her. As far as fights with Birusu only Vegeta and Super Saiyan God Goku put up any kind of fight. Gotenks is beaten easily too as is Super Saiyan 3 Goku who is beaten with a flick of Birusu's finger. Vegeta puts up a fight after Birusu hits Bulma and goes bat shit on Birusu with Goku saying that Vegeta's power surpasses his at that moment. In the end Birusu beats Goku but is out of power so he can't destroy the earth. He reveals that there are 12 universes and that DBZ world is in the 7th. Uisu who is Birusu's attendant ala Popo to Kami is revealed as more powerful than Birusu and his martial arts master. Uisu knocks Birusu out for what he says will be 3 years. Uisu wakes Birusu from a 39 year nap at the beginning of the movie. Vegeta says he gets to be Super Saiyan God next time

Going by what I've read in interviews and what people in Japan are saying about the official movie guidebook it sounds like this started off as a regular DBZ movie, with Toei doing all the writing and getting a few design suggestions from Toriyama after he looks at the script, but this time Toriyama got into a mood and rewrote the script and turned it into an entirely different movie and sent that back instead.

All the recent versions of the English dub aren't quite as family friendly, but I'm with you in preferring the original version. You capture the original atmosphere and dialogue. Plus I love the Japanese music.

Some people just can't do subtitles, though, and even more can't get past his voice(which I've always loved), but it's a shame.

Saw this the debut night. For anyone curious about seeing how Funimation handles it, it is probably the most faithful translation they have ever done of anything Dragon Ball-related. Nearly all of the humor is left intact, with seemingly a minimal amount of dialogue changed. Pretty sure it's all of the same voice actors, but Chris Sabat sounded pretty rusty on Vegeta. None of the music is changed, and it looked damn good on the big screen. Wasn't the Director's Cut, which would have been nice considering I have yet to watch it, but I wasn't expecting it to be. All around a great watch for fans of the dub or the sub, but it really just reminded me how much I enjoy this movie.

Also, seeing this on an American big screen was just surreal:
