I like it.

It's different, it's slick, and I'm actually a fan of the director (José Padilha). I'm sure a lot of fanboys are losing weight over this as we speak, but this is one remake that I've actually been interested in seeing. Not because I want to see Robocop remade, because I still hole the original firmly in my top 5, but because I've always wanted to see how a Robocop movie would be handled in today's Hollywood. And most costumes look horrible when they're on-the-set pics, and even now I still think the costume looks awesome.

Plus... Garry fucking Oldman, Samuel L. fucking Jackson, and Michael fucking Keaton.

Greed

And Jackie Earle Haley!

Sadly,I'm not excited at all from those screenshots. It looks like a rubber suit and looks to be nothing original or unique.

I'm afraid the movie lost any hope of legitimacy when Aronofsky abandoned it.

It's basically just a metal version of Batman's suit. I kind of like the helmet, though.

Greed
September 15th, 2012, 4:32 PM
The helmet is pretty rad. But..how is this movie going to be different than Judge Dredd?

I predict it'll be marketed in a similar way, and perform comparable at the box office, which is anything than what they're hoping for.

Guy

I was thinking just that, Dredd is essentially the love child of Dirty Harry and Robocop. Robocop is now even more unnecessary.

They can easily tweak it as time goes on. Just an all black suit with no secondary colors is a bit blah. I can't wait to see more though and frankly I'm just happy this movie's actually happening. A true test for Hollywood, that's for sure.

rumored concepts from the script. no real confirmation, but this is what's supposedly floating around right now.

2029.

In Iran, mercenaries hired by OmniCorp escort a TV news crew to a compound filled with suicide bombers that is being raided by ED-209 drones created by OmniCorp. The mercenaries report to General Monroe of the United States Armed Forces in the Pentagon. He orders the ED-209 drones to move in and instructs the news crew to go live and film the raid.

The footage is aired simultaneously to an interview between General Monroe and TV personality Pat Novak (Samuel L. Jackson), which Monroe praises the ED-209 drones and OmniCorp's contract with the Pentagon. Meanwhile, in Iran, a bomber leaves his wife and his 10-year-old son hidden in a secret area of the compound and confronts an ED-209 drone, who shoots him dead before he can detonate his bomb vest. The man's son races out of the compound to help his father and is executed by the ED-209 drone as well. Monroe orders the crew to cut away.

In Detroit, police officers Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and Jack Lewis (Michael K. Williams) are pursuing mobster Antoine Vallon and his men. During the chase, another police cruiser shoots their tires, allowing Vallon and his men to escape. Though Lewis views this as an accident, Murphy is convinced Vallon has bribed the cops to help him get away.

At OmniCorp's headquarters, roboticist Dr. Robert Norton (Gary Oldman) studies the development of a chimpanzee who has received bionic implants. Norton has created a program that allows him to control the chimpanzee's body movements by intercepting and analyzing his brain patterns, manipulating the chimp into believing he's in control of his own body when he actually isn't.

In Detroit, Murphy reports the incident during Vallon's pursuit to Chief of Police Karen Dean (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). She says Murphy is a good cop, but she can't do anything unless he has proof. Returning home, Murphy meets his wife, Ellen (Abbie Cornish), and their son, David. Murphy and David play videogames together, and Ellen later comforts Murphy, telling him he's a good man.

At OmniCorp, Norton attends a meeting where the company's CEO, Raymond Sellers (Michael Keaton), is informed by his lawyer, Liz Kline (Jennifer Ehle), that footage of the ED-209 drone murdering a child was covered up, but it can't happen again, or their entire program and contracts with the government would be in jeopardy. Tom Pope (Jay Baruchel), the head of marketing, has been preassuring Sellers to bring their technology to the homefront, and Norton then suggests that they create a scapegoat that could have the blame for the programming glitches pinned on him should they happen again.

In Detroit, Murphy and Lewis learn that Vallon is hidden in a local abandoned warehouse and head there alone after reinforcements don't appear. Upon entering the warehouse, they are surprised to learn Vallon's men were waiting for them, and Lewis runs away, leaving Murphy alone. He is captured and beaten by Vallon's men, and injected with a mysterious substance. Vallon and his men then aim their guns at Murphy. Lewis hears the shotgun blasts and returns only to find Murphy's mutilated remains: a half-torso with one attached arm and the head.

In the hospital, Ellen is visited by Kline, who convinces her that OmniCorp's Project RoboCop is Murphy's only chance of survival. Ellen signs the papers transfering Murphy's custody to OmniCorp. Norton rebuilds Murphy's robotic interskeleton and wires his brain to the program that he previously used on the chimpanzee. The "prototype" is then moved to OmniCorp's Chinese division, where RoboCop 1.0 is created.

Pope conduts market research on RoboCop 1.0's appearance by asking inmates of local prisons in Detroit to rate how threatning he is. When the feedback is negative, the scientists use Pope's notes to build RoboCop 2.0, a fully functional early design. RoboCop 2.0 is trained by ex-Marine Maddox (Jackie Earle Haley) and displays his strenght, speed, agility and stamina by completing a massive obstacle race in a OmniCorp test site in record time.

Adjustments are made to the exoskeleton, leading to the creation of RoboCop 3.0, that is deployed to South Africa to disband a terrorist cell. Norton and his men monitor RoboCop's performance, and Sellers instructs Norton to force RoboCop to shoot a civilian to evaluate his emotional response. Norton confirms that Murphy feels guilt over what he perceives as his own mistake, and Sellers gives the order to "finish the product".

RoboCop 4.0 is created. He has a "Sleeper Mode", where his exoskeleton is programmed to have a blue-ish/grey-ish tint, emulating a police officer's dress blues, and a "Battle Mode", in which the plates are reinforced with bulletproof padding and become a black-tintet tactical gear for more infiltration. Throughout the process, Ellen and David request access to Murphy as they were promised by Kline, but it is continuously denied. Lewis, feeling guilty for abandoning Murphy and blaming himself for his predictment, takes up arms to help them, and, in the process, becomes a surrogate father for David.

With RoboCop completed, Norton connects Murphy's mind to OmniCorp's worldwide surveillance system, downloading records of all known registered criminals in Murphy's head. The sensorial overload of brutal crimes commited throughout the planet is too much for Murphy, and he begins to overload. Norton interrupts the process, and Sellers instructs Norton to reduce Murphy's emotions so he'll become more effective.

When RoboCop is finally reinstated to the Detroit Police Department, he is a borderline emotionless automaton under Norton's control, and initially drives his family away, resulting in Ellen becoming closer to Lewis. Murphy monitors their activities through OmniCorp's CCTV cameras, and his emotions begin to push through OmniCorp's control.

After a series of arrests as RoboCop, Murphy goes after Vallon, and learns that he was hired by Sellers to lure Murphy into a trap and mutilate him so OmniCorp could use Murphy for Project RoboCop. They had selected him as the perfect candidate, but knew he wouldn't accept by his own. Murphy also learns that OmniCorp intents to create more RoboCops, capitalizing on the popularity boost that Murphy's performance will cause among police officers.

When Murphy becomes too big a liability and Norton realizes he is beginning to resit OmniCorp's control, Sellers deploys a group of ED-209 drones to ambush and destroy RoboCop in Old Town, but RoboCop is able to outstmart and defeat them, marching towards OmniCorp's headquarters, where only one thing stands between him and the men who ruined his life: The ED-210 robotic unit, a prototype upgrade of the ED-209 design, and RoboCop's greatest challenge yet.

It would look better in pink. Serious here. It just looks like a wannabe Batman/Darth Vader right now. Closer to Judge Dredd than the original RoboCop.

I'll wait until I see it to pass judgment, but I really don't like how it looks at all.

Actually, it looks a bit like one of my Commander Shepard's, but even then I added in some color. Not everything has to be black to be dark and edgy.

I must be in the minority when I say I don't think the Robosuit looks bad. I don't think it looks amazing, but it's nothing that has me worried. However, the concept of him riding a motorcycle with teeny tiny flashing blue and red lights seems odd. If I was to construct a fortified crime prevention unit, I wouldn't have it riding around on a vehicle as easily subduable as a motorcycle. And the hand thing? Uhhh... so many small things about this has me scratching my plastic head, but I'm with Vanilla about wanting a trailer. We've got to see how this looks, otherwise there will be millions of fanboys soiling their diapers over the smallest detail. It's hard to stay optimistic these days when everybody else in the room is talking smack.

The film has a great cast, that's for sure. But Robocop had a very distinctive look and very particular mannerisms, so a re-imagining of the character is bound to come under scrutiny in those departments. Based on the images so far, he doesn't look imposing and he doesn't have that other-worldly quality that made the original suit stand out. He looked like he could fuck you up. The new suit doesn't appear to have the kind of weight that made Robocop have to move and turn in a certain way, but a trailer will give a better indication of the body language, the voice, etc. Overall, he just looks like a guy wearing body armor. That's not Robocop. The exposed hand makes it look like he's wearing a suit, as opposed to being a Cyborg. The suit looks like something that people could have cobbled together for a fan film, but nowhere near the level of, say, Batman: Dead End.

VHS
November 3rd, 2012, 1:46 PM
The suit definitely doesn't look as menacing as the original, yeah. It's odd how they never reached out to the guys that worked on the Iron Man suits, because there's no doubt they would have had a ball with a project like this.

Like Gene Wilder is bitching about Tim Burton's Willie Wonka movie again which to me is not a remake since it started out as a book and is a different interpretation of it. I rewatched the original film after seeing the trailer. It's very particular in terms of the satire, the violence, the social commentary, etc. The new film looks entirely different in terms of tone. Ahh, I've been hearing the same thing about it. "Not bad, but ending was meh."

So far so good though!

Finally watched it last night and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! It was a little weird having a more broad scope, but an hour in I realized how much I was still with it. The suit was awesome, Joel pulled off Robo wonderfully, and I hope we get a sequel.

Now that Hollywood has made a decent ROBOCOP remake... there's hope for the future. Well done, Padilha.

Is there still an anti-capitalist bent in the movie? That shit was only tolerable in the original because Verhoeven made it work.

Yeah, I'd say so.

It wasnt as good as Dredd though, I'll be annoyed if this gets a sequel and Dredd doesnt.

Saw this over the weekend. It was ok, a little better than I'd expected, but not enough to give me the "THAT WAS AWESOME!" feeling when walking out of the theatre.

I really liked that they tried to make it a true modern-day reboot rather than a shot-for-shot remake of the original. The satire wasn't nearly as clever as it was in the 80's version, but at least it was relevant.

I think the biggest problem I had is that I just didn't like the guy playing Robocop himself, for whatever reason. Just didn't click with me. Fortunately, Gary Oldman more than made up for that, and I think that if any other actor played that role I'd probably have liked that movie about 80% less.

But all in all, not the worst reboot they could've done. A new take, with plenty of nods to the original to keep the fans happy. I'd buy it for a dollar.

Just saw it and I thought it was pretty awesome. It's felt like a true reboot, taking the basic premise and doing something new with it. And what it did was great.

I loved the early scenes in Tehran, felt like mgs4. And hell, robocop himself was basically grey fox. This movie had metal gear all over it.

Oldman was awesome as always, and I agree that Jackson's scenes could be completely removed without really changing the movie. He was basically in there to slam you in the face with satire of the current media biases. Other than that, I had no real complaints.

I watched this again, and I'm liking it even more now. It's amazing how much I was "with it" and then realizing we were 60 minutes into the movie... it's like wow I'm really liking this.

The action scenes were rather forgettable, but the way Murphy looked during them I thought was bad@$$. I think he looked amazing when he'd taken some damage from the gunfight, and then having to shoot off his own arm to get away from the ED's.

After several watches, it's clear what a sequel would need from another Robocop movie.

-Actual action scenes. The action sequences in this movie were just... uninspiring. Bland. Imagine an action scene like at the beginning of Dredd only with the Robocop theme. How badass would that be?
-Much less family stuff.
-A clear antagonist.
-A crime ridden city.
-More robot cop.
-More versatile Robocop capabilities. He runs and jumps in the beginning one time, doesn't do it anymore for the rest of the film. He just seems like a cyborg cop with a gun. Iron man has a plethora of ways to go about taking somebody down, Robocop should have had this down to a T.
-More Robocop theme. It plays in the beginning once and that's it.
-Better soundtrack. The rock music during the training sequence and the end credits... so bad.

Watched this on a whim, and my admiration for this movie has completely dissipated. What a boring, boring movie.

Weird looking back and I originally enjoyed it. :wtf:

I'm a sucker for the first 3. This one, nothing about it made me want to see it. To me it was like "let's just use the name Robocop but have it be a watered down PG-13 version of what people actually liked" Just like the Jaden Smith Karate Kid movie, where he learned KUNG FU!! I hate movies that do this kind of shit. Robocop wasn't made for kids. It was, like many R rated action movies, made for kids to figure out ways to see it without their parents knowing or maybe they have cool parents who let them watch with them or a cool relative that is of age.

This movie, without even seeing it, I can't imagine it's even worth the $1.50 at Redbox or even a $1 DVD bin at Wal Mart.

Which one is the good one then?

I actually like #2 more than any of the other Robocop movies. #1 is cool, 3 is what it is, but I think #2 really embodied that era of wild action movies. It just lacked one of the major action stars playing Robocop. Maybe JCVD or Stallone would have helped it more.

Erm the original Robocop is fantastic. It is what science fiction crossed with action should be, 9/10. You just championed the one with the shit baddie in a box and his wee kid sidekick. That is mediocrity on a reel. I own them all. Robocop ended after the first. Everything else failed badly.

Oh I'm not trying to say the first one wasn't good, it was very good but for some reason I just liked the 2nd one better. I wasn't a fan of the 3rd one and again I haven't seen this new one.

Clarence Bodicker is seriously underrated in terms of cinema's greatest villains. He's utterly detestable and the arrogance drips from every pore. He's thrown through a bunch of windows and still manages to call Robocop a cocksucker. That takes balls.

I wouldn't be shocked if they just didn't have it listed because I believe IMDB is also a fan updated website isn't it? Since the show was barely on and who knows who even watched it, might just be lacking updates. I'm almost certain that Starz showed this about a year ago but if I remember correctly it was done in like four 2 hour blocks like a mini series. I watched some of it, barely remember it but it was cool.
