Being able to keep Rooney next year is huge. This year there is definitely more than just 7 top quality European players as well so I'm not worried about missing out there, so I can hopefully combine a top European player later on with Rooney. And I've won with Ronaldo and Messi in consecutive years so I wanted to try with something different.

We used to have two keepers when you were playing before so by the time someone down the bottom of the list had a pick 60+ players would have been gone.

The annoying part about picking Rooney first is that it lets a cheat player fall to BC in third. Although BCWROGS will probably tell him to pick Cliff Akurang.

Exactly. I gave up in that season because I thought it was a ludicrous decision. Never mind. I will finish above your shithouse team again. Even if I have to pull out the 36th most popular pick as my main striker I'll give it a go just to shut your boring cheating dogshit great-game-ruining face up.

The 12 hour thing is realistically for people who are working etc to cover any lack of access. Its not a rule where we can walk in and say "ok ill make my pick tomorrow" coz thats annoying.

60 goals in two seasons probably had something to do with it. Now playing for the favourites for the Conference as opposed to a midtable side as well.

As I said the other day, I thought the first five picks were no-brainers, personally. I know from speaking to Alex yesterday that he thinks I've over-rated Shaw but I settled on him as my pick weeks ago and am happy enough with how it has turned out.

As I said the other day, I thought the first five picks were no-brainers, personally. I know from speaking to Alex yesterday that he thinks I've over-rated Shaw but I settled on him as my pick weeks ago and am happy enough with how it has turned out.

I dont think he is overated but its a slightly risky one with him moving to a new team and Luton having other good options. If you wanted him though there was no way he would be available by the time it was your next turn so I reckon thats justification enough.

I don't think you've overrated Shaw. I was just urging caution because he's had injuries in the past and he hasn't played in either of Luton's pre-season friendlies. He's also struggled with a move before too.

If he clicks though then you've got a goalscorer on your hands.

Thats a bit of a surprise I must admit. I was going to keep him last night but didnt like the fact he is being linked to lots of clubs and other than last season his record wasnt that great.

Still a top scorer last year dropping down a division could pay off well for you. You are turning into my team from last year there....

This morning he wasn't going to be my pick but I had a crisis of confidence and abandoned my previous pick. I saw him play last year and he's a top top player. If he stays at Wycombe then happy days but more likely he'll end up at Preston or Sheffield United who I expect to compete at the right end of League One and neither have any decent strikers.

He was in the second category on my list, mainly because of the play every week thing. He's a good safe pick I think, most of the players at the top of my list have moved club, division so it's probably wiser to pick someone with something of a proven track record.

60 goals in two seasons probably had something to do with it.I meant absolutely nothing against Jon Shaw, as I actually toyed with the idea of picking him myself, but I just wanted BC to explain the "science" behind his rankings because the facts say both Hooper and Rooney have a better goals/game ratio than Shaw over the past two seasons. And you know how much I love my facts.

I can vaguely remember BC explaining it all before, but I'd love to read it again.

Yeah it helps that he is at my club of course too so ill know when he is playing or not. The way we set up too I genuinely expect him to score every goal we score next year!

1. Messi
2. Ronaldo
3. ???
4. ???
5. Jon Shaw
6. ???
7. ???
8. ???
9. ???
10. ???

I understand why you would have European players in the top 10 of BCWRONGS but they should be in a completely separate pool, you numpty.

9 of the top 10 in "Grims Sheet of Pretty Colours" have either all been taken or were keepers.

I still don't understand the European players thing.

Basically you dont get one as you didnt qualify for Europe last season. Dont worry about it too much, it will make sense to you as the season goes on.

You can however take a risk on a player in Europe (or indeed the world) if you think he is going to sign for a team in an eligible. So say for example you had heard that Tottenham where about to sign lets say Robert Lewandowski you could pick him but you will be left short if he doesnt sign for you at some point in this window and will then be forced to pick up another player.

Also say you did sign Lewandowski with your first pick and then Beefy or whoever takes him with his Euro pick later in the draft you will lose him anyway as his Euro pick takes precedence over your normal pick.

My advice is not to worry about foreign based players unless you have insider info or something. And if you wanted to take one wait until the bottom end of the draft where the loss of the player should he not sign wouldnt be so bad.

Beefy
July 23rd, 2012, 4:46 AM
I still don't understand the European players thing.

Top six in the league + the winner of the cup get the chance to draft a player from any of the main European leagues. You can only pick one player and you can't swap him for another Euro player later (for example Jay had David Villa last season as his Euro player and once he got injured he had to swap him out for a domestic player).

We also have a second cup competition called the MMH Cup which also gives everyone access to a European player. Teams are eliminated from the MMH Cup when they don't score a goal amongst their eight squad players in a single week. The last team standing wins a Euro player which they can keep for the duration of the next MMH Cup (which starts the following game week).

Currently turdpower & MMH are in the final two of this current MMH Cup.

Biggest tip that you could get right now, Simon, is something which gets said every year. Don't worry too much about the draft. Obviously try to get the best squad that you can but you'll find that the vast majority of teams are completely different by mid October to what they are at the end of the draft itself.

This game is all about picking up players through the season and picking the right five players on a Saturday.

Beefy
July 23rd, 2012, 5:36 AM
Because whilst we're all convinced when we draft a player that he's going to be an example of how great we are at spotting talent, actually we're not. Plus often you'll pick a player convinced that he's going to score 20 goals once he gets into his club's side but the reality of only having eight spots available to you means that you often don't have the luxury of being able to wait so you end up dropping him for someone who happens to be playing against Barnet the next Saturday.

It's just the way the game works out. Obviously if you can pick up a Robin van Persie or Jordan Rhodes in the draft then brilliant but more flops get drafted than success stories.

Christopherson obviously missed the fact that this draft has to be wrapped up by Friday.

Simon
July 23rd, 2012, 10:06 AM
Why does it have to be done by Friday? And how long does each person technically have, is it 8 hours?

Andy
July 23rd, 2012, 10:09 AM
It doesn't need to be done by any set time, well apart from by the time the season starts. It's usually 12 hours per pick.

I am stunned at the signing of Kevin Davies early in Round 1. Stunned.

Bad Collin
July 23rd, 2012, 10:09 AM
It doesn't, he was being facetious and it is normally 12 hours each.

Probably because he's 35, has never been a goalscorer and often didn't even get in the team last season.

I have faith in you though, BBF.

Kevin Davies is an odd choice it must be said. I fancy Ngog and Sordell to outscore him.

This is like Grant Holt from last year all over again. Except it won't turn out remotely as well.

MMH won't like you saying it, but it's what we were all thinking.

BBF

We'll see, I think he'll do really well in the Championship and lead the line for Bolton.

As you've already said though, the draft is often a poor litmus test for a squad especially in the early couple of rounds. Its a punt but I think it will come off.

Simon
July 23rd, 2012, 10:18 AM
Why won't MMH want me to say it? How many fucking rules are there in this game?! Jesus

Its just an unwritten rule that you don't really name players that haven't been picked yet.

It's not really a rule but it must be fairly obvious why we don't want to be discussing undrafted players in public. We want as many 'Kevin Davies picks' as possible, we don't want to direct these people to decent picks.

To be fair to BBF of the two mentioned that we think outscore Davies one of them couldn't manage to do so last season and the other barely got a game after signing in fact until i was doing some research i forgot he was even at Bolton. Despite all this i still Davies is a poor pick as i can't see him or Bolton doing too much next season.

Bloody Christopherson.

Some surprising choices so far as well as some very unsurprising ones. I think everyone saw MMH with Jelavic and Mikey with Richards coming for months, both nice picks though. Richards is the one consistent name at the top end of the League Two top scorers table every year, and MMH I know you keep saying heart over head but I'd have taken him just after the first 5. I like the top Premier League goalscorers as you'd expect someone like Jelavic to get a similar amount of goals to a top goalscorer in League One/Two, but in less games and his games are mostly on weekends.

Beavon at 7 is mental. Gambling on him staying at Wycombe is a huge risk that could pay off massively, fair play for taking it as I wouldn't, but if he doesn't and goes back to League One then you've got a good, not great, goalscorer with no real proven track record on your hands. I had him last year for a while and he was a decent squad player who went through some dry spells. Although he picked it up a bit for MMH after I dropped him, that's a very small sample size and I was able to replace his goals fairly easily, and I don't think you could say that about the likes of Jelavic and McAllister.

I don't think any more needs to be said about Kevin Davies... don't understand this "oh well" mentality when picking a first round pick because they've failed in the past. Still a big chance to get a consistent goalscorer if you don't lose the plot.

You're basing it on stats whereas I'm obviously taking that into consideration as well as his ability. I'm confident he'll rock up at Preston, he's too good to stay in League Two. The big gamble I feel is that he could end up in the Championship. It's no more of a gamble than Shaw or even keeping Cisse, I don't think.
