The idea here is for suggestions that might not be considered mainstream. Lots of hidden gems out there, fairly popular bands that might not be getting airplay, one hit wonders, bands on the rise, and so on. You can make requests for genres, similar bands, or whatnot if you like. If someone suggests something, it would be nice to get a bit of conversation going about it. What do you like about it, what don't you like? Maybe you'll have a similar suggestion to go along with it. The forums a bit dead, but I know there's quite a few people around into music. GBF, Miotch, Ringo and others usually have something new up their sleeve for the rest of us. Here's a place to post and talk about it, rather than keeping it a secret.

Seabear - The ghost that carried us away

Just discovered these guys today. This is the only album I've listened to so far. They're an "indie"-folk band from Iceland. I'm not quite sure who I'd compare them to right now. Wiki quotes some other people as calling them "Sufjan Stevens meets and unplugged Arcade Fire" and "Icelandic Beck". Some of their songs scream Elliot Smith at me if I'm being honest, but that might be because I think the guy has a similar voice. Seashell was the first song I heard which made me think 'The shins'. I'll have to listen a bit more before I make any solid comparisons, but you get the idea. Soft, happy music.

Couple of their tracks to preview...

Soz Hurley, I would have posted this in the "what I'm listening to right now" thread but then DVAD would have buried it with 5 shitty arse rap songs which no-one gives a damn about. This was the most convenient place to place this awesome tune.

- I liked that Seashell song

- I've only heard the song Dominoes a few times. I didn't know who did it. Within the first 10 seconds on listening to 'Stay Gold' I was replacing each word they sang with 'Domino'.

Nope, that's the idea of the thread Mary.

I'm not extremely familiar with the original of that. I like that it has the same catch to it, but with a heavier sound. Quite good.

I've heard a couple of songs now. I just keep waiting for them to break out into heavy metal, screamo type music, but they never do and I'm always on edge listening. I hope they never do.

Ok. A couple of people seemed to pay attention to the first installment here, some even seemed to enjoy it. I'll try another one, see how this goes...

Michou

I originally heard of these guys from a relative who went to school with the bass player. I may have posted about them around here somewhere before, I don't quite remember. They're very pop indie. Fun, catchy tunes. You can tell from their music videos and a few interviews I've seen that they're very go with the flow, non-serious guys. Seem like lovely people, and their music is quite good. Not huge on the charts or anything quite yet, but seem to be getting more recognition through time. Couple of their songs to listen to...

I've no idea what their fanbase is like, but they've recently been Glee'd, so they must be getting somewhere. One of my favourite bands, and definitely one of my favourite frontmen in Nate Ruess, have a listen to fun. if you fancy it.

I know they're well known, and just about everyone here knows about them, but fuck me The National are good. Quite possibly the most underrated band today. Everything they touch is pure beauty.

Blind Pilot is pretty fucking good. A bit like Bishop Allen meets older Blitzen Trapper. Cool, lo-fi stuff.

3 Rounds and a Sound is their first record and it is a good place to start if you want to check them out. One of the truly great albums of the last few years.

probably very Mainstream, but I'd never heard of them until I heard their song underpinning one of the making of videos for a Jake and Amir episode (whew).

Anyway, Seymore Saves the World are on in my car every other morning lately. Lovely little indie-folk (? I dunno what stuff is) band that you don't have to think too hard about. Just enjoy.
