View Full Version : WWE promo/video package appreciation thread

I haven't created a thread in a long damn time and I apologize if this has been done, but I always wanted to create this thread.

I remember when I was started watching wrestling 13 years ago still a kid just loving the pre-PPV video packages and the pre-big match promos hyping specific feuds. WM10 and WM14 stand out to me with the highlights of Bret/Owen Lex/Yoko/Bret, Taker/Kane, Austin/HBK/Tyson, etc.

For the longest time I was a workrate mark watching indy matches with no purpose other than in-ring competition but I always gravitated back to storytelling, and WWE's production department over the years has done an amazing job selling us many feuds or getting us excited to watch a PPV.

This thread is devoted to that love. Let me present some favorites, past and present, and please add your own:

WWE Randy Orton vs Ric Flair Promo Taboo Tuesday 2004 - YouTube

Face Edge being the one to take down Evolution one by one starting with Orton wasn't that bad an idea.

The crowd just turned on him so he went heel, which worked out pretty nice.

Yeah, Orton was so hot at the time that no matter who he faced, he'd be the one getting cheered. I mean, the fans were on his side when he was up against Benoit, as world champ, in his hometown.

Shame they ruined that.

+1

We don't get those "moments" very often...I'd say CM Punk at MITB is the moment from this year, and Taker/HBK from the year before...but they are few and far between and this one is beyond amazing and I wasn't even as invested in the feud as most as I wasn't following wrestling closely at the time and still it gives me chills.

that foley/hunter buildup was fantastic television. They really dropped the ball on that feud not going into Wrestlemania as a singles match as opposed to the fatal fourway they had with rock and big show.

Winner Take All Match Promo at Survivor Series 2001 - YouTube

The Winner-Takes-All match at Survivor Series 2001 had a terrific video package. In particular, it delved into all of the chaos on both teams and what was at stake. I also liked the overview of who was on each team, followed by some fast-paced highlights of action from the past few months.

The Rock vs Chris Benoit - Fully Loaded 2000 promo - YouTube

A personal favourite of mine, along with the match. The video package puts over Benoit as a merciless badass, and how desperate The Rock is to kick his ass.

Shawn Michaels vs Batista Backlash 2008 Promo - YouTube

I think this is a fantastic run-through of how compelling the characters were in this feud. Each man is right in their own way, and then Jericho comes in to stir up trouble even further. Sometimes I think this feud gets forgotten in light of the full-blown feud between Jericho and Michaels later in the year, but the promos and the matches between Batista and Michaels were super.

Batista vs Shawn Michaels One night stand 08 promo - YouTube

And here's the follow-up. I haven't posted the video for Jericho vs Michaels in between the two bouts with Batista, since there's a bit of overlap. Michaels lies about his injury at the Backlash match and even manages to pull the wool over Jericho's eyes. Batista is rightly pissed. Looking back on these, I absolutely loved the character interaction throughout.

I don't know if they count or not, but I agree that the old Desire videos were probably the best. The choices of songs were perfect, The clips of the wrestler talking about what desire is to them, the clips used and how they tell such a great story with the song...

I really wish they would do these again. Showing a wrestlers passion is a great way to get people on their band wagon.

The videos they have been showing recently to highlight different superstars (Dolph, Kofi, Ryder) are good, but they don't do nearly as much for the superstars as the Desire videos did. Passion for the business is something that needs to be shown more. Desire videos are a great way to show it.

Those "Desire" packages were tremendous. They should bring those back. I think a well-made video package can do more than just about anything else to get somebody over, especially since a package is only a few minutes long.

One minor annoyance there: He says he won the Olympic Gold Medal, but "my real destiny was to come to WWE and entertain the fans." Good example on how WWE focuses on the wrong shit. You wouldn't hear any other professional athlete prioritize entertainment over victory. It would be much better if he said that the Olympic Medal proved he was the best amateur wrestler in the world, and the WWE Championship proved he was the best professional wrestler in the world. But that would involve saying more of Vince's dirty words.

When you look at the two side by side, you'd think someone with his presence and stature would have no chance of going toe to toe with The Rock. But Punk knocks this one out of the park. Great little feud and great promo video.

He shouldn't have lost to The Rock at that RR. Good feud, but I'd have loved to see how arrogant Punk would have been after winning.

Edit: Also, how comedy is it that Roman as part of The Shield destroyed The Rock... and now they're best buds.

Its that same old played out shit where the returning guy gets all the glory while the work horses got screwed. I remember being specifically annoyed at how The Rock got to be the one that unveiled the new title belt after the spinner. Especially after the long run that Punk had. As a matter of fact, for all that Punk tried to do "to bring change" and talk about replacing the spinner, he never once got to hold the new title belt.

Love this one. Although as much as I love the song ("Monster" by Imagine Dragons) it doesn't quite fit thematically. The feud wasn't about Bryan losing his mind and potentially turning into a bad guy. Actually, that had been the story during the build to Summerslam against Cena the previous year.

The opening of No Way Out 2000. That's the first third of the show, but just watch the first two minutes for what I'm talking about. Foley cuts maybe the greatest promo I've ever heard in the opening package.

"It will be soon, but not tonight (I'm not quite ready). Though my nights are sleepless, I still dream. I've won and lost many things in my career (championships, blood). But I've never main evented Wrestlemania. This is my chance (my last chance). In my way there is a man, and that man has my gold (my ticket to Wrestlemania). He may be the The Game, he may be the champion, he may be the best in the industry today (I should know). But he is no Cactus Jack. And he never will be.

Fifteen years I've been chasing this dream. Hundreds of stitches, dozens of fractures, countless nights I've bled. You may say 'this is no dream, this is a nightmare.' Maybe. But it's my nightmare. And I decide when I wake up."

Gives me chills every time.

Is the 'monster' they reference not him, but rather the ridiculous following he acquired against all the odds? That in itself is a monster force.

I doubt they thought of it like that though, I mean, this is the WWE we're talking about...

Eddie Brock
March 2nd, 2015, 12:35 AM
I thought he could've easily been built up to the point where he could've faced The Undertaker. I never understood why they pulled the plug on the character so fast, because it seemed like they had a feud in the making between him and Undertaker. He was different, and I liked that. I never bought the excuse that he needed to work on his ring work, since ring work has never determined anything in the WWE, not to mention that was the time when Heidenreich was running around feuding with Undertaker.

VHS
March 2nd, 2015, 12:45 AM
I liked Mordecai. The gimmick was a little... much, but he definitely looked like he could have been big. Wasn't so hot about his attire or his entrance, but ehh... I wish he was still around. Him or Kevin Thorn. Dude could have made both characters work IMO.

The Law
March 2nd, 2015, 2:18 AM
I think they determined that Thorn just wasn't ready to be on the main roster at that point. Much less put into programs with Eddie Guerrero and Undertaker, which is what they were teasing. Smackdown was a fucking trainwreck after Wrestlemania in 2004.
