I am away from home right now, but I've downloaded night 2 and will upload Nagata/Suwama as well as anything else anyone wants.

Minoru and Kanemoto vs Kondo and Hayashi was really disappointing

Right, finished Day 1.

Matches in order of preference:

1. Jun Akiyama vs. Taiyo Kea - Match of the night. At 30 minutes long it is does have some weaker parts, but they built it well. Good exchanges, and both Kea & Akiyama look on form and up for it. They kept my attention for pretty much the entire half hour which is saying something. Nice story with Akiyama almost getting the win right at the end but Kea holds on by the skin of his teeth. Kea looks strong and we can all see that with a couple more minutes Akiyama would have won. Very good.
2. Suwama vs. Masakatsu Funaki - This was decent. Funaki uses his supreme fighting skills to attempt to take out Suwama's arms with holds and stiff kicks. Suwama fails to land a suplex at one point as a result. Overall, nothing great but a nice change of pace as Funaki offers something different.
3. Minoru Suzuki vs. KENSO - Quite liked this towards the end. Mainly because MiSu offers more character than most and is just very fun to watch. A bit plodding and KENSO really is an annoying shit (forgetting to kick out, missing spots etc.) but it ended up being rather intriguing as MiSu struggled to put him away so easily. Eventually he does. Raises three fingers in the air as he celebrates to show that he plans on winning the Carnival for the third straight year. Puts him over as a real favourite.
3. Yuji Nagata vs. KONO - Nagata tried hard and KONO held up his end reasonably well. KONO brought a measure of dirty tactics and cocky attitude, but he could have shown more. Fine first match for Nagata.
5. Takao Omori vs. Ryoto Hama - Not too bad. Hama is pretty enjoyable as always. Loved the commentators laughing :D Mutoh was on commentary but not sure if he was one of the guys laughing when Hama would just sit on Omori and what not.
6. Joe Doering vs. Seiya Sanada - Very uneventful. Not offensive or anything but Doering was super bland and Sanada doesn't really have much to work with.

Have you seen Nagata/Suwama yet? Alan loved it, and while I don't always agree with him, I do love me some Nagata but on first watch it didn't seem to be that memorable.

Nope, going to watch Day 2 now actually. I've seen mixed reviews of the Nagata/Suwama match. Kea/Suzuki from this show sounds rather good too.

DAY 2!

Ranking the Carnival matches best to worst:
1. Suwama vs. Nagata - I thought this was great. Maybe not as much as ALAN4L!!!!!! things but he thinks every match is amazing. I can see why chot thinks it wasn't so memorable, maybe out standards for high profile heavyweight matches in Japan have just really dropped in recent years, but I honestly really enjoyed it. It was cohesive, told a simple story as Nagata targeting the arm made so much sense when you take into account the Nagata Lock and the fact that Funaki had done a job on the arm the night before. Cool finish as well. Felt as though it was the biggest match so far with the winner looking like the favourite to take Block A. Best match of the Carnival thus far.
2. Kea vs. Suzuki - Long term allies collide. Pretty damn good. Probably third after Kea/Akiyama and the match above. Suzuki repeatedly attacks the leg. Kea doesn't sell it much towards the end but heh, whatever. I guess Kea winning makes sense too.
3. Omori vs. Funaki - Surprisingly decent. Both guys looked up for it and Funaki adds a great sense of realism to his matches. Wet the appetite for the two bigger matches which came after it too.
4. Ryota Hama vs. KONO - Hey, this wasn't too bad either. Serious Hama WITH STRIKES is kind of nifty. I want to see him develop into this massive bad ass who just clobbers the shit out of people. Would enjoy some jabs too. Anyway this was alright in the end.
5. Doering vs. Akiyama - Couldn't get into this at all until the end, which was admittedly really fun. After like 10 minutes of BORING Doering dominating half-heartedly, Akiyama woke up and gave us a hot couple of minutes. Okay.

Overall, a better show than the opening night. Something to enjoy in all the matches, we didn't have to endure KENSO and the main event was a belter.

1. Champion Carnival - Block B: Seiya Sanada vs. Joe Doering

-Doering's sucks, and Sanada's not yet good enough to carry people who out right suck. This match was bleh.

2. Champion Carnival - Block A: Ryota Hama vs. Takao Omori
-Surprisingly enjoyable, given that it is Omori. I place all credit on Hama being enjoyable. It's so obvious that he's trying his heart out I can't hate his matches, no matter how technically atrocious they may or may not be.

3. Champion Carnival - Block B: Minoru Suzuki vs. KENSO
-I've warmed up to Suzuki over the last two years, but even if I hadn't he doesn't deserve this; no one does. Fuck KENSO and Mutoh for hiring him. My God.

4. Champion Carnival - Block A: KONO vs Yuji Nagata
-I love New Japan crowds, especially when they go to other promotion's shows. I also love Nagata, because he's bad ass as all hell. And I'm starting to love KONO, as his new heel character just brought a life to him that wasn't there before. That, and his knees are pretty swank. Probably my favorite match of the night.


5. Champion Carnival - Block B: Taiyo Kea vs. Jun Akiyama
-You know what I can't stand about Taiyo Kea? Is that he has everything needed to be great; athleticism, legit $KilLZ, charisma, and stands out. But he is so content to go through the motions of "standard epic match formula" that it just kills whatever he could potentially do. And Akiyama tries, he really does, but what we get is a good match that's really good at the end, but there's a somewhat disjointed feeling to it that you sense prevents the match from being great.

6. Champion Carnival - Block A: Suwama vs. Masakatsu Funaki
-This...wasn't as good as their title match earlier this year. I'll have to give it a second watch, but I largely remember being disappointed.

At first there were reports that Super Hate had suffered a stroke. Now the story is TARU and at least 2 others beat him into a coma

4. World Tag Team Title Advancement Decision Match: Akebono & Ryota Hama defeated Taiyo Kea & Takao Omori (14:21) when Akebono used a Body Press on Kea.
5. Minoru Suzuki, Masakatsu Funaki & KAI defeated Great Muta, KENSO & TAJIRI (16:30) when Funaki used a Backdrop Suplex on KENSO.
6. Yuji Nagata , Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi defeated Suwama, Seiya Sanada & Manabu Soya (26:46) when Nagata used a Backdrop Hold on Soya.

- The All Japan Roster came in the ring before Match #1 started, led by New President & CEO Masayuki Uchida. Uchida apologized for the recent turn of events that struck the company and promised that he will do his best in handling the company. He said that on behalf of the company, they are wishing Nobukazu Hirai a full recovery and Hirai would be in their prayers. The Entire roster then bowed as a symbol of respect and left the ring.
- The ladder match was changed into a 3 Way due to Kaz Hayashi's injury. Though Hayashi is present in the show and was among who came out before Match #1.
- Great Muta & TAJIRI turned on KENSO during Match #6. First, Great Muta spit green mist on KENSO. Then TAJIRI did the same with his red mist and finally both men spit their mists on KENSO simultaneously. KENSO cut a promo after match calling both of them out and then he took a TV Camera from a cameraman.

- Kazushi Miyamoto replaced Kaz Hayashi for Match #1.
- Both Akebono & Hama were wearing goggles in Match #7 to combat Great Muta's mist. But KENSO managed to rip Hama's goggles which lead to Muta finally hitting the Green Mist on Hama and the eventual finish.
- Sanada challenged Suwama backstage for a shot at the Triple Crown.
- Muta Red misted KENSO after their Match.

Reports are that the crowd was closer to 3,000. Such unfortunate luck for AJPW lately. Hope the BJ guys stay around for a while.

I would say more but this review from Seabs on WF sums up my thoughts:


Holy cow. Not sure how anyone could want more from an 11 minute match than this gave. Stems from Nagata destroying Funaki's face at Wrestle Kingdom and now his two boys are out for revenge on Nagata on his behalf. So heated throughout and I loved both Kono and Minoru going for Nagata from the get go and just ignoring Inoue because he's irrelevant. Crowd gets really into it and they manage to get a great heel/face dynamic going and the crowd really get behind Kono and Minoru and eventually give some heat to Nagata too. Kono does the running knee in the corner on Nagata and it's a beautiful spot after WK and then at the end Nagata does it himself on Minoru and his reaction to hitting it is the best thing ever and the crowd give him all the shit he warrants for it. Breaks down again post match when Kono attacks Nagata doing his wonderful dance of justice. Ridiculous heat and hot crowd and only 11 minutes. More or the less the perfect match for what I want from wrestling in 2012. Can't wait for Nagata/Kono now which took place today and seems every bit as wild looking at the result.

The title match wasn't bad; in fact, it went over fairly well, which shocked the hell out of me. Funaki's chicken-wing tombstone thing looks really dangerous and silly in my opinion, hardly the most dangerous or silliest thing someone has done in wrestling recently.

But silly nonetheless. I get that they were trying to hide the fact that it would be five minutes by starting out with a King's Road Epic feeling out process, but it still made it feel disjointed. Anyway, not as bad as I initially feared, but still pretty dumb overall. Secondly, SUWAMA keeps hurting people; he beat up KAI, then gave Kono a concussion. Haven't seen the second one, but the first one was a lariat where SUWAMA did hit the poor fool too hard, but it was the way KONO fell that did the damage; SUWAMA could probably lariat 100 people the exact same way and it wouldn't happen again.

Speaking of KAI, he is FINALLY taking his "hiatus to bulk-up and return as a heavyweight" that he should have done forever and a day ago, so now he can have terrible heavyweight matches with people that are honestly not that much bigger than him, instead of terrible matches with midgets. It was uber silly to take Seiya Sanada as a heavyweight when the bigger KAI was slumming it in the junior division just because of his Dragon Gate style.

Kazushi Miyamoto is back in All Japan and reformed Turmeric Storm with Tomoaki Honma, so All Japan has a new tag team and Honma has a job again, which is good.

And in the last bit of important news, the following people will have the chance to become the first-ever All Japan Television CHAMPION!!!: Sanada, Soya, Kono, Hama, Nakanoueno, Okabayashi, Honma & Miyamoto. I honestly don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, it could really help All Japan's younger heavies develop, especially with the moderate success that New Japan has been having with their Intercontinental title in a similar way. On the other hand, it's All Japan; you know they'll fuck it up.

See, but New Japan gave its Intercontinental title credibility first by putting it on a popular gaijin (MVP), and subsequently on top guys who had stepped away from the main event for a bit (Goto and Nakamura). So that belt immediately became worth something, and will make for a big rub for somebody coming up sometime soon. How the shit is All Japan going to do anything like that when they're holding onto Triple Crown title credibility by a fingernail?

True, but who the shit do they have to give that title belt credibility? SUWAMA's in the main event, Mutoh has become a side-show attraction, and Akebono is hurt; they've literally got no one, and just have to tally-ho on ahead since the decision has been made.

Chinese born rookie Soshun will be officially retiring as of December 31st. Soshun was unable to compete for All Japan for well over a year due to visa issues which then led to pressure from his parents to give up wrestling. All Japan seems to have been trying to setup a return for him, but being that he has spent so much time away it has effected his condition to compete.
KENSO was at the press conference for Soshun as one of the last times Soshun was competing he became a member of Team Bichitto”. Of course the loss of Soshun really brought the team down and left KENSO as the sole member.

Poor guy. Rough situation for him.

I just can;t get into All Japan. I'm three shows deep into NJPW's recent big events and they are just so much more enjoyable than anything AJPW is putting out at the moment.

Is NOAH going tits up by the way? I have a friend who's just got back from a few months with them. Forgive my ignorance, but are they still the cheeky underdog?

All Japan started the year out so brilliantly that they were my favorite promotion; they had a fairly expansive junior division that was more than "Prince Devitt and his JOB-Squad", several foreign talent exchanges, Sekimoto and Okabayashi helping their tag division huge, SUWAMA and Lil' Soya being the best home-grown tag team All Japan has had in YEARS, and Akiyama doing more with the Triple Crown title in the few months he held it than the last seven champions combined.

Now Lil' Soya was forcibly retired thanks to his moronic older brother, the junior division is back to square one, Sekimoto and Oka are no longer "full time" as it were, and Akiyama is no longer the champion. Basically everything they did to progress in the last year or so has gone down the toilet. And now they are having a number one contender's match between Joe Doering and Akebono for Christ's sake, and I'm probably the only person on these boards sado-masochist enough to LIKE Akebono.

And NOAH is rapidly going tits up, yes. Since Misawa's death they've mismanaged virtually everything and everyone and really nobody watches their shows anymore. They're finally pushing KENTA to the main event, and if it doesn't work they're pretty much done for good.

Manabu Soya will be taking some time off; oculomotor nerve paralysis and a herniated disc in his neck.

Also, new owner Shiraishi is having his own crazy-coon moment, talking about wanting to get rid of 'match-fixing' in wrestling. Between this, his calling everyone minus Nagata and Nakamura in New Japan shit, and his Crusade against Kenso, this guy is clearly crazy, but with all the attention he is clearly getting All Japan, at this point crazy is what they need.
