Yay for the logo looking awful on black background!

The state of NOAH currently:

•*Sugiura has now defended the title 10 times. He has beaten Goto, Makabe, Takayama, Akiyama, Shiozaki, Chessman, Morishima, Smith, Bernard & Trevor Murdoch. He will never lose.
• KENTA is now a bad ass heel who enters to Waka Flocka Flame's "Hard In Da Paint". He is cool.
• Kotaro Suzuki is Junior Champ and he is kicking a fair amount of ass. He is cool.
• Takayama and Sano are tag champs. Sano has an annoying head.
• Nakajima now has MC Hammer pants. He is cool.
•*Kobashi is still broken.
•*The company is still slowly dying.

What am I missing?

You may be missing the fact that the shows are INTERMINABLY BORING TO WATCH.

Ugh. There are like 4 people worth watching now, and only Suguira of them is at his best right now.

I can't wait for them to fold and become something more interesting, because this company was always just about Misawa and much like AJPW with Baba, there's nothing there without him.

In my experience watching NOAH over the years, Makoto Hashi has not entertained me nearly as much as 90% of the current roster.

It was weird; he was released from his NOAH contract, then started going into shoot-style promotions like FUTEN and became super fun again. Never quite "PAY ATTENTION TO ME, AKIYAMA!!!" awesome, but I'll take what I can get.

Honestly, when Marufuji started working all over the place I lost any and all need to watch NOAH.

Sad but true. :(

What's sad is that NOAH finally have some semblance of storylines. They have got to handle the end of Sugiura's reign very well -- so no Rikio-ing.

The Ricochet

Personally can't stand Suguira, though having him as champ, a fighting champ no less, means it's very easy to avoid his matches. But I do love NOAH's Jrs division right now, especially with Nakajima and Suzuki so in focus, and the latter remains one of my favorite wrestlers right now, even though I sort of miss his heel act from a few years back in comparison to his Misawa-tributeness now.

Honestly, when Marufuji started working all over the place I lost any and all need to watch NOAH.

Sad but true. :(

Also, big second on this. Though I have to say, him and Aoki giving Osaka Pro's Kotoge and Harada so much, essentially "making them"... really got me watching NOAH again. Seemed out of character for them... though... I haven't seen much like it since.

- Before Match #2, Michinoku Pro's Kenoh came out and announced that he and fellow Michinoku Pro member Kenbai will be participating in the upcoming Jr. Tag League. He said that he is coming for KENTA's head.
- After Match #2, Tatsuhito Takaiwa came out and said that he wants to wrestle in NOAH. He appealed to be a part of the upcoming Jr. Tag League with Osamu Namiguchi, another ZERO1 alumnus.
- Mohammed Yone won Match #5 after putting KENTA through an announcer's table.

So Shiozaki wins the title on 7/10 and probably something like Shiozaki/Taniguchi vs. Sasaki/Nakajima on 7/23 in Osaka. Unless they're really stupid and do Shiozaki vs. Sasaki that quickly.

KENTA/Kanemaru, Suzuki/Aoki have to be locks to make the semifinals. Hopefully the KO team makes it as well. Pretty underwhelming group as a whole.

False. My "woah - Eddie Edwards is actually pretty good" moment was in the KENTA/Ishimori vs. Danielson/Edwards match from 2008. But no one actually watched that show. And then everyone discounted his performance in Ladder War II because it was in ROH.

Either he defends it on smaller shows as they build up to a Shiozaki vs. Kobashi unification match, he defends and drops it to Morishima or someone once they see he doesn't have it in him for a big Shiozaki match or they just don't re-activate it. Not sure which way I'd prefer -- we all remember that epic Kobashi/Aijima title match...

Cabana/Taniguchi was a decent enough romp if you aren't tired of Cabana's schtick and are a fan of Taniguchi's rough style (like me). The Akiyama six-man was good enough, and Kobashi fans will love...portions...of his six man. Fuck Zack Sabre Jr though; jack-ass sells Taue offense by laughing.

That is really the best case scenario here. The truth is that it might very well fall flat, but the man has such incredible crowd support, and NOAH is on such a downward turn right now that they don't have a ton to lose in taking the chance. Morishima winning, AkiIto winning, Suzuki and Aoki winning and Yone ever winning a wrestling match ever were mine.

The first two are mine as well, especially the second one with Bernard and Anderson already losing the IWGP titles to a reunited dream team in a much more heavily pimped environment; Morishima at least won the Global League Tournament to justify his getting a shot and winning.

NOAH are NOT dropping their Jr. tag titles to a couple of nobodies from Osaka Pro who wrestle in front of even smaller crowds than the one NOAH and Zero-1 draw these days. Besides, I like the Suzuki and Aoki tandum, and how dare you not adore them, sir!

I'm meh about Yone winnning; he won a throwaway match against eternal throwaway opponent Yoshie, and both men's standing remains the same.

Pro Wrestling NOAH just announced that General Manager Ryu Nakata and Counselor Haruka Eigen had ties to the Yakuza from 2003 to 2010, working with them to sell tickets to the company's live events.

All of the major Japanese media covered the story, which will give the promotion a bad public image. Virtually every promotion in sports and entertainment in Japan has Yakuza tie-ins, but it's probably best analogized like the steroid issue in sports in the U.S. It's commonplace in every major sport, deep down everyone knows it, but if it comes out that somebody used it publicly, it's a black mark against them. Pride went down largely because of these revelations.

Exactly how this will fall out is unknown, but expect fall out very quickly.

NOAH was, at least among Japanese sports fans, the most popular promotion in the country for much of the last decade, but fell on hard times in recent years once losing its network television outlet. A financially-strapped NTV, due to the recession, canceled pro wrestling, one of the longest lasting shows in the history of television in any country, dating back more than 50 years. The death of president Mitsuharu Misawa was another gigantic blow. Without strong television, the company was unable to create new stars who could sell tickets like Misawa and the frequently injured and physically destroyed Kenta Kobashi.

So NOAH has been boring the shit out of me (who'da thunk it?) and Morishima's "Don't Stop!" thing is actually super annoying in front of tiny crowds. So why not watch a compilation of a REAL champion?

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00503/Kenta_Kobashi_503782a.jpg

That's right; as part of the great "DDT Reviews Japan!" Revival after literally months of procrastination, I will sit down, watch and review Kobashi's title win, and all 14 of his title defenses. Or 13 and the last ten minutes of the 14th, as that seems to be the only portion of Kobashi/Rikio II that exists anywhere (yes, there were TWO Rikio title matches). From his wars against eternal rivals, to bouts against other promotions' stars; From "gaijin monsters", to Japanese monsters; from utter dickheads to sidekicks, I will conduct the most scientific of experiments to see if the Kobashi reign was truly as brilliant as I want it to be, or if nostalgia dulls my senses; by watching them with soda, popcorn, and marking the fuck out. Totally legit.

For those who wish to join in this epic quest, from Defrost to Vice to Cewsh to...does anyone else come to these boards anymore? Anyway, feel free! You'll be paid with pictures of chocolate chip cookies, and will marvel at how delicious they look. Oh, and for those of you who are all like, "I don't have time to find all those matches and download them!!"

http://www.dailymotion.com/playlist/x247g8_Jahmale_Hepburn_kenta-kobashi-superman/1

Yeah, what now, bitches?

Anyway, whether there are takers in this quest or not, I shall venture forth into the good night, take up arms, and say, "Once, NOAH was GOOD!"

Tainted Eclipse
June 26th, 2012, 9:23 PM
i'd have to watch it again and 'think' about it more to really defend a claim of top 10 japanese singles matches, but some things i liked: kobashi really working the headlock in the beginning to actually make it and interesting segment; honda's offense made for a lot of cool, unique spots; insane crowd, especially for honda's near falls; a bunch of cool big spots; and a cool ending with honda taking some nasty suplexes. do you think much of it?

Defrost
June 26th, 2012, 9:26 PM
I think it is very good, but some people take one look at Honda and lower their expectations to the point that a very very good match because an amazing match. Once Honda suplexes Kobashi on the Ramp and starts going for the rapped up arm it gets great. My issue is everything before that is sorta meandering.

Tainted Eclipse
June 26th, 2012, 9:30 PM
honda is pretty much consistently awesome from what i've seen of him, crazy underrated. his match vs. saito in which i think he won the shot against kobashi would maybe also be in my top 3 NOAH matches, along with a tag featuring honda, kobashi, and i think saito and akiyama. so my top 3 NOAH matches are all honda from 03.

While Defrost and I disagreed on semantics and ratings, not even Kenta Kobashi could drag Takuma Sano to anything three stars or above. That is...wow. Just wow.

DDT

Upon further review, I am closer to Defrost's opinion about the Sano match; Kobashi couldn't even drag him to a two star one.

Also, the more research I do into the Rikio push, the more it pisses me off.

[NOAH News] Update to previous post (http://keepingthespiritalive.tumblr.com/post/56115684864/noah-news-pro-wrestling-noah-held-a-press). Pro Wrestling NOAH held a press conference to announce a couple more matches added to the DEPARTURE 2013 show on August 4th, as well as Marufuji’s 15th Anniversary show that will be held on August 24th.

First up, Naomichi Marufuji stated that he was in long deliberation in regards to what kind of match he wanted for his upcoming 15th anniversary on August 24th. Marufuji mentioned that he would have faced against the senior he debuted against on August 28, 1998, in Yoshinobu Kanemaru, but they are current in two different places now. Morishima, whom they both were dorm mates in All Japan, is currently out on injury, so there is no way they could work together. Then another name in Makoto Hashi, but he is no longer actively competing.
But after some thought a certain name in Shinsuke Nakamura had a strong ring to it. These two have always found themselves to be against one another in tag matches, more specifically in 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzp2Ru73afE) and 2011, and with that he announced that they would be facing KENTA and Takashi Sugiura. Nakamura and Sugiura have faced countless times in the past and have proven to bring a fight against one another. Then with the addition of KENTA, whom is Marufuji’s rival, it seems the match could be something that the fans would want to see.
Marufuji also noted the fact that Nakamura is currently in CHAOS in NJPW and Marufuji has recently been against two of their members in Yano & Iizuka, but he seems Nakamura as having something more to him.

Something else to note for the Maru’s part of the conference was when someone of the press asked if KENTA vs. Nakamura could potentially happen? Marufuji replied that “the possibilities are indeed there, but something may or may not happen." From what it seems the possibility is there, but does not exactly mean it is guaranteed to happen. We’ll see where the wind of favor blow.

Give me this. This I will pay to see.

Kenou is leaving Michinoku Pro and joining NOAH

That's a strong acquisition right there; Kenou is a great worker who made it in my top ten matches last year. Shame for Michinoku, as other than Hayato he's the only one under 30 who drew.

I hate to say it, but NOAH has been making some really good decisions lately. The long KENTA run, bringing in the right New Japan guys, signing an interesting indy talent. Good for them.

Hell I LIKED Morishima's previous run as champion and I think this is bullshit. If they really wanted the belt off of KENTA to prevent it from being stale, they couldn't think of anyone else to win? Anyone at all?

Cewsh

Apparently they're building up Morishima's new stable as the big thing in NOAH. As far as I can tell it's called the Ultra Dangerous Club or something like that.

Still, no one else?

There isn't anyone else. There's no one else in that promotion that i'd even call an upper midcarder.

BUT THEY WERE JUST BUILDING THE WHOLE FUCKING PROMOTION AROUND MORISHIMA. MAKE UP YOUR FUCKING MINDS NOAH.

Though actually, this makes me certain that they took the belt off of KENTA because they expected him to be leaving.

According to the Observer the title changes happened because they thought KENTA was leaving and the idea was to build up Marufuji to take the title off Nagata and be the Ace

Main event was a barbed wire/electric deathmatch between Onita & pals against Sugiura/Takayama and someone, absolutely dire stuff. GHC title clash between Marufuji and MAYBACH may as well have been conducted in front of a colony of ants for all the crowd were into it. Just painful stuff.

Spoilers just in case

Suzukigun attacked Marufuji after the Kojima match! MiSu/Marufuji next then, I like the sound of that.

And TMDK won the tag titles in an apparently really good match.

While they have stopped uploading NJPW World stuff the other promotions can still be found there. NOAH doesn't air day of though so I think there will be a wait.

According to Super Crazy, who works here obviously, all of his bookings are now going through the New Japan office and all finishes are being told to him by Jado. So basically it sounds like NJPW straight up owns NOAH.

All Japan is worth about $10 at present. I'm sure New Japan could buy it with pocket change if there was anything worth owning.

Now that's interesting. I wonder if that's just for the duration of the Suzukigun invasion, or if the Suzukigun invasion is more an expression of the new ownership.

Neat-o.

And agree with Tainted. AJ's roster is rather good right now, I'd love to see them mix it up with NJ. Whereas NOAH has very little of any real worth left.

I like NOAH quite a bit and clearly NJPW isn't going to properly dilute its own show with Raw & Smackdown style split crews, so I am glad there is an outlet for the under-used talent of NJPW and some good people for the top NOAH guys to fight (Ishimori, Kotoge and Harada are PERFECT Omega opponents, for instance). If you cut some of the crap hires across NOAH and shored up the contracts of people like ZSJ, Sekimoto, etc and maybe amalgamated the tag titles then you could really run some focused stuff across the two rather than giving GHC belts to bored guys.
