Really? I always pegged him for lawful neutral.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Tanahashi vs. Nakamura, as not only do they bring out the best in each other, but this could possibly be their first meeting where I DON'T think Nakamura is a technically sound yet completely boring shithead.

I just watched New Japan's Sendai show. Here are some thoughts
Goto vs Naito was great. And really the way Goto was working was foreshadowing his heel turn. There was an ultra aggressiveness there. And Naito is just amazing as long as the guy he's working with isn't an addict who doesn't give a shit.
IWGP Tag Titles was really really good. Strongman and Nakanishi going 20 scared me, but they pulled it off. Hell Strongman got hurt and kept going. Plus Karl Anderson trying to beat up the guy from Tokyo Sports was great.
IWGP Title this was what you'd expect a great match. Kojima looks revitalized by coming back to New Japan and Tanahashi is great.
IWGP Jr Title I was really disappointed by this one. Seemed like it never got out of first gear.
I have watched the Elimination Match twice. Still don't know how Tenzan got eliminated.

Highlights from the New Japan Cup you mean?
What did you start watching last night?
Let's see... I just happened to look up Taka, and watched:
YouTube - IWGP Jr. Title: Prince Devitt vs TAKA Michinoku (Part 1)
But the first match I watched was:
YouTube - 01. Minoru vs Shuji Kondo vs Kaz Hayashi - (AJPW 02/06/11)
Unbelievable stuff.
Ringo
April 22nd, 2011, 4:01 PM
Ah, okay. So yeah, both from this year and both Jr. Heavyweight matches but the second is from AJPW. Still, if you enjoyed those matches then here are some other notable JHW matches from 2011 so far:
2011
All Japan:
Kaz Hayashi vs. Minoru, AJPW Jr. Heavyweight Title - 1/2/11 (Minoru ends Hayashi's unbelievable 695 day reign as Champion)
Kaz Hayashi vs. Shuji Kondo, 2/11/11 (Number One Contenders match)
Minoru vs. Shuji Kondo, AJPW Jr. Heavyweight Title - 3/21/11
New Japan:
Prince Devitt vs. Kota Ibushi, IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title - 1/4/11 (This is from New Japan's biggest show of the year, WrestleKingdom V)
NOAH:
Kotaro Suzuki vs. Eddie Edwards, GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title - 1/29/11
Kotaro Suzuki vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima, GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title - 3/5/11
Matches that I think you might particularly enjoy in red.
(Can find you some links too if you don't have any luck, but most of them should be on youtube)
Also, did anyone grab your attention the most? If so, I can recommend some of the best of that wrestler if you'd like. 2010 was a pretty great year for Jr. wrestling in my opinion and the likes of Devitt, Marufuji, Ibushi, KENTA and so forth had lots of really good matches.

Personally, I am a fan of the NJPW stuff from the early 90's. There was some good stuff back then. I haven't kept up very well recently, but if you are just interested in puroresu in general, the Super J Cups and G1 Climax 1995 are well worth the look.
Ringo

New Japan's Junior Heavyweight division in the early/mid-90's is one of the greatest eras in wrestling ever. There is an obscene amount of quality from that period. If Delta Devil is enjoying the juniors matches of 2011, he should absolutely watch as much as possible from 89-96 New Japan
Cewsh
April 22nd, 2011, 4:46 PM
Oh absolutely.
Though I think NOAH's Jr. division from the early 00s is often overlooked in comparison. it isn't nearly as good as that was, but it was some really inventive shit with two rising superstars.

http://representingpuroresu.wordpress.com/2011/06/04/injury-report-serious-injury-during-new-japan-event-today/
You may have noticed that the main event of today’s New Japan event ended in a ref stoppage, and now thanks to Daily Sports I now know why-the reason was an injury suffered by Manabu Nakanishi. Neck. According to my translation, it’s a serious injury. Here’s what happened: About 10 minutes into the match Nakanishi was apparently attempting a German suplex hold, presumably on Wataru Inoue, but something went wrong during the move and Nakanishi fell and suffered a serious neck injury. He suffered some cervical vertebra damage and also reportedly had numbness in one hand, but that may be gone now and fortunately it doesn’t appear to be as serious as it could have been. But either way it sounds like he could be out a while-neck injuries can take a while to come back from, the last big man like Nakanishi to suffer a neck injury that I know of, NOAH star Takeshi Rikioh, is still out after about 1 year (he’s making event appearances and looks well but hasn’t returned to the ring). We’ll see what happens here, hopefully it’s not worst-case.

3. CMLL World Welterweight Title: Mascara Dorada http://www.purolove.com/images/logos/small/cmll.jpg beat Ryusuke Taguchi (c) (8:26) by pinfall to become the 26th champion.
4. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Yuji Nagata & Wataru Inoue beat Takashi Iizuka, Masato Tanaka & Tomohiro Ishii (9:12) when Nagata used a backdrop hold on Ishii.
5. Special Singles Match: Yujiro Takahashi beat Tetsuya Naito (11:12) with the Tokyo Pimps.
6. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: Kota Ibushi http://www.puroresufan.com/images/logo/ddts.jpg beat Prince Devitt (c) (13:49) with a Firebird splash to become the 61st champion.
7. Special Tag Match: Minoru Suzuki & Lance Archer beat Togi Makabe & Satoshi Kojima (12:39) when Suzuki used a Gotch-style piledriver on Kojima.
8. IWGP Intercontinental Title: MVP (c) beat Toru Yano (10:50) by pinfall (1st defense).
9. Double Title Match – IWGP Tag Team Title & GHC Tag Team Title: Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson (c) beat Yoshihiro Takayama & Takuma Sano http://www.puroresufan.com/images/logo/noahs.jpg (c) (12:03) when Bernard used the Bernard Driver on Sano (8th defense) to become the 22nd GHC Tag Team Champions.
10. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) beat Hirooki Goto () with the High Fly Flow (5th defense).
* TNA Wrestling’s Brian Kendrick, who became popular in Japan earlier in the 2000s as Spanky in ZERO-ONE, made a surprise appearance in the second match in the place of Killer Rabbit, teaming with Jado & Gedo.
* AKIRA returned to his old haunt after the fourth match to continue his feud with Iizuka from TAJIRI’s SMASH promotion. After the same match, Mitsuhide Hirasawa made his long awaited return to Japan, surprisingly betraying his Blue Justice mentor Nagata and possibly (awaiting confirmaiton) joining CHAOS!
* Yujiro drew first blood in what is likely to be a lengthy grudge feud with former NO LIMIT partner Naito, and Naito was gang attacked after the match before Honma made the save.
* Best of the Super Jr. winner, Kota Ibushi, ended Prince Devitt’s one year reign as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion in an emotional match.
* Bad Intentions make history twice over with one three count, smashing Chono & Tenzan’s IWGP Tag Team Title defense record while at the same time taking the GHC Tag Team Title from NOAH to become double champions. Bernard & Anderson cement themselves as one of the most dominant teams in Japanese tag wrestling history.
* Tanahashi retained the IWGP Heavyweight Title over Goto in what is being called an epic match. Goto came closer than ever to winning the title that has eluded him so far but disappointingly still wasn’t able to surpass Tanahashi and the wait continues. After making history in the match beforehand, Giant Bernard appeared after the match and challenged Tanahashi! If this is realized, Bernard has the chance to become a 3-crown champion.
Woah.

Last year they bested Tanahashi, TAJIRI & KUSHIDA in the final while this year they defeated Bad Intentions & Liger to add another trophy to their collection, much needed after all three of them lost singles title matches at the recent Osaka PPV. Goto won the fall in both matches, showing that he is a force to be reckoned with despite his latest failure to win the IWGP Heavyweight Title.

This was Chono’s first in-ring appearance for the company where he became a legend since his harmonious departure at the beginning of 2010. On the other side, Nishimura returned to his old haunt after leaving the company at the beginning of 2006, while Otani also made a return although this was one of many for him since he left New Japan to help found ZERO-ONE at the beginning of 2001. Its not like Goto is going to turn on Tanahashi AGAIN. I guess going Chaos/Billion Powers makes sense, but that wont lead to any singles matches that can reasonably be called fresh. But then again, Bad Intentions have already had their run and I doubt they'll go heel/heel with Chaos/Bad Intentions.
I can't help but get the feeling that we'll get Suzuki and Archer vs. Billion Powers with Suzuki going over to challenge Tanahashi, but fuck I would hate for Archer to get that spot.

2. Togi Makabe & Ryusuke Taguchi beat TAKA Michinoku Kaientai Dojo & Taichi (7:54) when Makabe used a King Kong kneedrop on Taichi.
3. G1 Tag League – Semi Final: Minoru Suzuki & Lance Archer beat Shinsuke Nakamura & Toru Yano (12:08) when Suzuki used a Gotch-style piledriver on Nakamura.
4. G1 Tag League – Semi Final: Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson beat Hiroshi Tanahashi & Hirooki Goto (12:10) when Anderson used the Gun Stun on Goto.
5. Masato Tanaka ZERO1, Yujiro Takahashi, Jado & Gedo beat Tetsuya Naito, Tomoaki Honma, Tiger Mask & KUSHIDA (11:12) when Tanaka used the Sliding D on Honma.
6. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Yuji Nagata & Wataru Inoue beat Satoshi Kojima, Strong Man & Tama Tonga (13:20) when Nagata used a backdrop hold on Tonga.
7. G1 Tag League – Final: Minoru Suzuki & Lance Archer beat Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson (17:42) when Archer used the Dark Days on Anderson.
* Minoru Suzuki and foreign giant Lance Archer are the 2011 G1 Tag League winners! The tandem defeated Nakamura & Yano in the semi finals with Suzuki earning a big scalp by pinning CHAOS leader Nakamura. In the other semi, IWGP & Ghc Tag Team Champions Bad Intentions defeated Tanahashi & Goto to set up a final with just one Japanese fighter. Suzuki & Archer then pulled off the near impossible by beating one of the most dominant tag teams in Japanese pro wrestling history, Archer really making a statement by pinning Anderson to lift the trophy and move the two into top contendership for the IWGP Tag Team Title.
* New Japan announced the sequel to this year’s colourful and entertaining New Japan and CMLL joint shows. “NJPW PRESENTS CMLL FANTASTICA MANIA 2012″ will be a double header again at Korakuen Hall, taking place on January 23rd and 24th. Top stars from CMLL will head to Japan and mix with New Japan juniors to put on big shows with title matches and all.

Well I guess big gaijin have always been "big" in Japan. Vader, Hansen, Bob Sapp etc.
So instantly Archer has that going for him and being in that different context should make him more interesting (especially at MiSu's side) but he's just so forced, devoid of personality, awkward and lame.

So going the opposite of forced, devoid of personality, awkward and lame, I want to talk about the Three Wunderkids. Who are the Three Wunderkids you ask? Well, the name (which I stole from someone else who frequents another board I go to) applies to three young lions who are going to be fucking awesome, I guarantee it. They are:
Mikami Kyosuke: Captain Workhorse
Takahashi Hiromu: The Little Charisma Engine that Can
Watanabe Takaaki: The Second Coming
These three are the future of New Japan; fuck Yujiro, forget Naito, these three are fucking stars in the making.
Here's Takaaki's debut match. Against Hiromu, who's still in his first year. They have no signatures, no bombs, barely any history between the two of them for the crowd to play on. It contains no overly impressive technical chain sequences, no dives, no flash or pizazz, not even ten minutes long...this match fucking rules.

Mikami teams with Honma against TAKA and Taichi. This is the first match I saw featuring one of these three gentlemen, which is probably why Mikami will be my favorite of the bunch, despite Takaaki's DRAMATIC improvement since his debut indicating he's the one to look out for. (Starts @ 5:50)

Great stuff, DDT. Up until recently I was watching all New Japan's big shows from beginning to end, and the opening matches featuring different combinations of the THREE WUNDERKIDS was one of the main reasons why. It's rare that rookies (semi-)fresh out of the dojo really grab your attention beyond taking a good beating from a more established vet, but all three definitely look to have something going for them. I want to get back into the swing of things with NJ and look forward to seeing them slowly (but hopefully not too slowly) develop.

Full cards for the remaining shows of New Japan’s 2011 have been announced, including the fan voted dream match show, Kojima’s 20th anniversary show, ahd the Korakuen double header around Christmas time. Naito has been removed from the main event of Kojima’s show where he was to team with FUNAKI, due to an injury he has been carrying that has forced him off shows. Singles matches between TenKoji and Bad Intentions appear to confirm suspicions that the most dominant IWGP Tag Team Champions in history, Bernard & Anderson, will face one of the most beloved tag teams in history, Tenzan & Kojima, at the Tokyo Dome. Two titles will be defended on the first Xmas show at Korakuen with Devitt making his V3 defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title against Rocky Romero, while in what would have once been an indie dream match, Masato Tanaka makes his V3 defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Title against Tomoaki Honma. Cards also reflect Hideo Saito being booted out of CHAOS as he goes up against members of the group.

So I did watch the two Kojima matches as well as the opening segment with Hansen & Kawada and it was all lovely and heartwarming.
Would just like to take a moment to mention Umanosuke Ueda, who died yesterday at the age of 71 from respiratory failure. I still don't know too much about him, and only really became aware of his existence last year while trawling through 80's New Japan, but in doing so I grew rather fond of him. He played a surprisingly big part in the famous (and amazing) 3/26/86 NJPW vs. UWF elimination match, where at the age of 45 (basically playing the "what the fuck is that stupid old man doing here?" role) he inexplicably took out the UWF's indestructible leader Akira Maeda, sacrificing himself in the process for the sake of New Japan. Legendary moment and from what I gather, probably the highlight of his career. That whole match is really awesome with nuclear heat.
Oh and apparently he featured in Takeshi's Castle as a henchman.

He also quite clearly inspired the trademark hairstyles of both Ziggler and Yano.

So I'm thinking Tanahashi doesn't lose the title until May at the earliest. His next defense is Okada and that is not happening. March has no title match since that is the New Japan Cup tour and the tour ending main event is the tournament final. Then the winner gets the April shot in Korakuen Hall and I seriously doubt they end a year plus long title reign in a 2000 seat building.
That leaves Wrestling Dontaku, which the way they book is either the 2nd or 3rd most important IWGP title match of the year, in May.
DDT
January 8th, 2012, 1:42 PM
Sounds plausible, but who takes it from him?
Not Naito, Okada is laughable, and Goto will either have his hands full with the IC title OR will be coming off of a loss to Masato Tanaka.
Nakamura is the only one I see in a position to do it.

Is Makabe that good and worth it though? I haven't really seen much of his work other than a match against MVP and that WK match. I don't dislike him...but you guys have any matches to prove he's world title material?
Defrost
January 8th, 2012, 2:25 PM
He has been IWGP Champion. Held it 6 months until he lost to Kojima and Kojima dropped it to Tanahashi to start this reign
As for good Makabe matches watch anything with him against Nagata or Nakamura
DDT
January 8th, 2012, 2:29 PM
He had a fantastic bout against AKIRA back when he was still a junior. And he was Mr. Heel when he invaded NOAH. There's lots of good Makabe matches out there, just none against the Dudleys.
Ringo
January 8th, 2012, 2:32 PM
I'd LOVE a short Giant Bernard reign, but I know this has looked less and less likely over the years. You'd think he's proven himself loyal enough to kill any fears of a Lesnar repeat, but he's just not been booked as this mega dominant gaijin powerhouse. Still, I'd enjoy it.
There really aren't many options outside Makabe if they don't change things up. Really hope Tenzan's resurgence continues injury free throughout 2012.
When is Nakanishi back again?

Bushiroad, the new owners of New Japan Pro-Wrestling, today held a live presentation to announce some details on the future direction of the company. Here are the main things revealed at the event:
- “WRESTLE KINGDOM 7 IN TOKYO DOME” has already been confirmed for 1/4/13. They seem to have dropped the Roman numeral numbers for various concepts such as this so it’s listed as 7 instead of VII.
- The “G1 CLIMAX 22″ was also announced with two dates revealed: 8/3 Korakuen Hall and 8/12 Sumo Hall (the final).
- The yearly Sumo Hall event in October has been given a “more intelligible name” and from now on will be called “KING OF PRO WRESTLING IN RYOGOKU”, named after a new card game Bushiroad will be releasing.
- The historic “G1 TAG LEAGUE” name is no more and the concept will be renamed to the “WORLD TAG LEAGUE” while the end-of-year tour will be called “ROAD TO TOKYO DOME” to make it more of a coherent lead-in to the January super-show.
- Other minor tours will be renamed such as the January/February series becoming “NEW YEAR GOLDEN ROAD”.
- The most intriguing one is that something called the “WORLD WAR LEAGUE” will begin in Spring 2013, hinting at something new, possibly international based and a replacement for the New Japan Cup?
- New Japan will begin to produce a new 60 minute show on BS Asahi with the tentative name of “WORLD PRO WRESTLING RETURNS”.
- New Japan will begin to produce a new late-night radio show on AM1422 with the tenative name of “NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING RADIO”.
- TOKYO MX will beging to rebroadcast the famous “Tiger Mask” anime with the idea it could reach young kids who would then become interested in New Japan, where of course the fourth generation of Tiger Mask has wrestled for years now.
- As mentioned, Bushiroad will release a new trading card game called “KING OF PRO WRESTLING”, a release that has been planned for some time, even before the company bought out New Japan. The first booster pack is scheduled to come out around the time of the 10/8 Sumo Hall show and players will be able to discover combos with tag teams and many other cool features.
- The well known Good Smile Company have began making a brand new range of New Japan figures and the president of the company, Aki Takanori, had some banter with wrestlers present today – such as being politely asked by Tenzan to make his head smaller than on usual Tenzan action figures! Kojima wants people to be able to press a button and hear his voice.
- New Japan wrestlers will begin to use the power of Twitter more, to communicate with fans. Ace Hiroshi Tanahashi can now be found @tanahashi1_100. Others are already on Twitter such as Nagata, Naito, Devitt, Nakamura, Captain New Japan, and Kanemoto.
- Sumo legend Akebono will return to New Japan from the summer and by the sounds of it will make New Japan his main home from that point onwards. He said he is looking forward to returning and dying New Japan the colour of Akebono.
The ultimate aim of New Japan under Bushiroad seems clear – to become bigger, better, and more accessible to new fans. And not just Japanese fans as it is clear that Bushiroad wants to make New Japan more of an international company and expand beyond the comfort zone of Japan. The renaming of shows/tours, the release of card games and action figures, the rebroadcast of Tiger Mask… all point towards a new direction for New Japan with new names and ideas, without changing the traditional feel of the company too much.
