Now that we have a separate TNA forum and a nice big forum dedicated to indies and everything else, we might as well use it!

So this is one of the bigger independent promotions these days. All usual indy all-stars work for this company, and the likes of Punk, Danielson, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and so forth have in the past.

This happened last night. It's their big annual one night tag tournament. Here are the results:

3/4 PWG results in Reseda, Calif.: complete DDT4 tag tournament results - TNA tag team in finals, PWG Title match announced for next show

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla DDT4 tournament results
March 4, 2011
Reseda, Calif.
Report by Matt Massingham, PWTorch correspondent

PWG promoted an eight-team, seven-match tag tournament to determine the annual DDT4 tournament winners and the next challengers to PWG tag champions El Generico & Paul London.

(1) Young Bucks (Generation Me in TNA) beat Brandon Gatson & Willie Mack in a First Round tournament match. The Bucks hit a combination superkick on Mack for the win.

(2) American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) beat RockNES Monsters (Johnny Goodtime & Johnny Yuma) in a First Round tournament match. The Wolves won with a powerbomb/lungblower combination into Edwards's Achilles lock submission finisher.

(3) ROH tag champions Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & PWG champion Claudio Castagnoli) beat the Cutler Brothers (Brandon & Dustin Cutler) in a First Round tournament match. KOW won with a pair of big kicks to the head.

(4) Kevin Steen & Akira Tozawa beat The Briscoes (Jay & Mark) in a First Round tournament match. Steenzowa won with a doomsday heel kick.

(5) Young Bucks (Generation Me in TNA) beat American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) in a semi-final tournament match. Bucks won with a roll-up. After the match, Richards talked up Edwards and asked him to come back to PWG.

(6) Kevin Steen & Akira Tozawa beat ROH tag champions Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & PWG champion Claudio Castagnoli) in a semi-final tournament match. Hero missed with a moonsault and Tozawa pinned him with la magistral roll.

The result of the sixth tournament match set up Young Bucks (GenMe) vs. Steen & Tozawa in the DDT4 tournament finals.

- PWG announced Claudio Castagnoli (champion) vs. Joey Ryan (challenger) at the next PWG show on April 9. On cue, the first-ever Joey Ryan Invitational started with Ryan Taylor vs. Brian Cage.

(7a) Ryan Taylor beat Brian Cage in a Joey Ryan Invitational match. Taylor won with a flipping cravate.

(7b) "Pretty" Peter Avalon beat Ryan Taylor in a Joey Ryan Invitational match. Avalon won with a roll-up and hook of the tights.

(7c) Candace LaRae beat Peter Avalon in a Joey Ryan Invitational. Candace was next in the gauntlet match and Joey superkicked Avalon to give Candace the win, setting up Candace vs. Joey in the finals.

(7d) Joey Ryan beat Candace LaRae via submission to win the Joey Ryan Invitational. This was the latest installment of their years-long feud on PWG. Joey won with a superkick, then End Scene for the submission victory. Typical inter-gender match.

(8) Young Bucks (GenMe) beat Kevin Steen & Akira Tozawa to win the DDT4 tournament. GenMe won with the More Bang For Your Buck on both Steen and Tozawa. The fans didn't seem to be happy with the Bucks winning. (Lots of history with the Bucks holding the Tag Titles for nearly two years from mid-2008 to mid-2010 before Generico & London won the titles.)

After the match, the Bucks cut a heel promo saying they're coming for London & Generico after winning the tournament. They dedicated the win to TNA president Dixie Carter.

Upcoming title matches: PWG champion Claudio Castagnoli vs. Joey Ryan, PWG tag champions El Generico & Paul London vs. Young Bucks (GenMe).

...

As an aside, has anybody seen the last couple of Kurt Russelreunion shows? They boasted rather stacked cards and I never got around to seeing the full shows. I may download them, but if they're particularly good I'd consider purchasing the DVDs.

Here are the cards by the way:

So yeah. There may not be much activity in this thread for some time, especially when you consider how the interest in ROH seems to have waned over the last couple of years, but I thought we might as well get some indy threads started up. I know a number of posters here got into non-WWE/TNA feds through these boards. It'd be cool if that happened again and we got a nice little group together following these promotions. While I'm still very much into WWE these days, there's no harm in having an alternative now and again.

Cewsh Reviews actually reviewed that first show, but our copy of it was called Kurt Russellmania.

Ringo
March 5th, 2011, 2:35 PM
Yeah, I remember it being called that as well. I'm not really sure why it appears to have been changed in retrospect, but I do know that these shows are part of the WrestleReunion conventions that they do every January. I shall look back in time for your review...

Cewsh

That second one does have an amazing card, though. We may have to review that one too down the road.

I may be alone here, but for some reason i've never really gotten into PWG. Maybe its because after all the time its been around, its never really progressed hugely and still looks pretty much the same. Add that to the fact that its basically just a feeder league for ROH and the lack of any really definitive storylines and it just falls flat to me.

Its always good to see the talent that comes through there, I just feel like they're perpetually underachieving for what they have to work with.

Ringo
March 5th, 2011, 2:40 PM
Claudio, Jake Roberts, Willie Mack, ESSA RIOS, Shane Helms and all those legends on the same card? How can that be anything other than completely amazing?

Cewsh
March 5th, 2011, 2:50 PM
Well, in fairness, RVD, Davey Richards, Great Muta, Jushin Liger and Super Crazy didn't do a ton for the first one.

I'd take the 2010 batch over that lot any day! :p But I get your point.

March 5th, 2011, 3:28 PM
I want to say up front that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th matches on there I either thought were okay or did not like but others might.

But Steen/Richards was fucking garbage. Skip it.

Ringo
March 5th, 2011, 3:35 PM
Question for you Cewsh. I want your overall thoughts on Davey Richards. Is he the new "best wrestler in the world who isn't signed to a major promotion"? Is he the new "Chris Benoit without the double murder who will finally realise his dream by clawing his way to he top and winning the World Title at Wrestlemania 40"? Or is he a "short arse from the Kurt Angle in 2006 school of overkill with no idea how to work a proper match"? Everybody seems to have a different opinion on him. I've seen plenty of his matches over the last couple of years, but I'm not really sure where I stand beyond "woah he's pretty intense and stuff - good match!".

What's the deal?!

Cewsh
March 5th, 2011, 3:45 PM
Well, that's a complex question, because I think for a great deal of his career he was the latter, not having any idea what he was going for except I WANT TO BE CHRIS BENOIT SOOOOOOOO BAD. As a result it didn't really work, and everytime people tried to push him it just never clicked right. He had some good matches here and there, but since he had no character to sell, the matches were very empty, and were pretty universally disappointing. As a result I always thought he was an overrated shithead.

BUT, this past year in ROH he finally found his character. As a heel he is godawful, but as a face who will take unbelievable punishment because he's just too stubborn to know when to quit, who is also incredibly dangerous (if not too smart) he is amazing. genuinely amazing. It results in some incredibly epic matches where he gets rocked by everything, sells it in a very unique way, and then has firey, instinctive, but not neccesarily clever comebacks.

He's dangerous but beatable, but you have to fucking kill him to put him down. Great gimmick. As a result i've done a total 180 on him and think he's fantastic...in ROH. Every other copy books him as a heel or as Chris Benoit and it does not work.

Go and track down his matches with Tyler Black from last year. For two guys I went in thinking we the shits (Black still is) those are some of the best indy matches I have ever seen. And its all Richards.

DVDVR. Cewsh isn't a fan.

That's because its mostly populated with bandwagoning twats who can't accept opinions other than their own.

Isn't it even more cliquey than the Oratory?

Cewsh
March 5th, 2011, 4:03 PM
Much more, yes.

And they pretty much hold themselves above all other internet wrestling fans. The word "pretentious" gets thrown a lot to describe the place.

Ringo
March 5th, 2011, 4:04 PM
I don't find it to be particularly cliquey at all. The Oratory is awful and hurts my brain. DVDVR is a great source of "what to watch" from all areas of wrestling all over the world from every era. The discussion is good much of the time, but like anywhere its not all great. There are plenty of people with very rigid opinions though, so I know where Cewsh is coming from.

Cewsh
March 5th, 2011, 4:06 PM
In fairness, the reason they hold themselves higher over there is because they have a lot of really smart people who are very well informed and there's a ton of in depth discussion. The Oratory is just a hive full of, frankly, morons who worship John C and his crappy crap.

Hoping to attract investments from temporarily unemployed multi-millionaire television actors, the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Board of Directors has announced that the follow up event to this Friday's DDT4 will simply be titled WINNING. WINNING takes place on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at American Legion Post #308 in Reseda, CA at 8:00PM.

More details about the event will be announced next week.

I have a really bad memory when it comes to wrestling and what matches/PPV's I've seen but I remember watching a few shows from 09 a few months ago that I downloaded from Xtreme Wrestling Torrents.

When I feel like watching wrestling I usually find some PWG because I find it more entertaining than ROH and WWE (most of the time), I don't even consider TNA an option.

It's probably because of the PWG commentary, I love it. I can't watch PWG matches without that great commentary either.

I might have to download some of the shows from 2010, Xtreme Wrestling Torrents has a freeleech pack of all the 2010 shows. I also seem to have invites if anyone wants one.

Watched four more PWG matches from 2010. Two from "As The Worm Turns" and two from "DDT4".

First one was Davey Richards taking the PWG title from Kenny Omega. It's about what you would expect from these two guys in an indy title match main event, but these days I don't think that's a bad thing. Omega is a showy wrestler and I enjoy his regular junior tags in Japan with Ibushi, but this match is all about Davey. I do feel as though he didn't need to do as much as he did here, but then I guess it WAS a world title match and was a big deal for Davey to finally win the top belt in the company he got his big start in (post-match promo is cool). On the whole, I enjoyed the match but felt I could have done with a bit less to be honest. Why are you kicking the absolute shit out of this guy's head as if you want to murder him? Save that for a proper blood feud Davey.

Hero vs. Shelley from earlier on in the show was pretty great though. Shelley surprises everyone by working more of a mat based match, which made sense because he had an injured back and although he did jump around a fair bit, it was noticeably toned down from his usual MCMG craziness. There was one reaaaaally cool submission where Shelley twisted Hero's arm around in ways it shouldn't be twisted. The ending was stretch was real nice too.

Gen Me/LTP & Johnny Goodtime in the first round of DDT4 was a pretty fun "spotfest" from the four guys. Full of insanity and cool looking spots, but the key is a) threading them all together and b) not going on too long. This was only like 7 or 8 minutes and as a result it was much more enjoyable than 15-20 minutes of this sort of thing, which ends up grating.

Last but not least, Chris Hero vs. Brandon Bonham. This was pretty brutal. My favourite basic wrestling match story is probably VET vs. YOUNG PUNK, and this was exactly that. They basically just beat the absolute piss out of each other for a while. It was enjoyable because Hero is known for his powerful strikes and this guy Brandon Bonham (who I'd never heard of) gives him everything he's got and goes toe to toe (and fist to fist and elbow to elbow) with Hero. Good stuff.

Overall, Hero/Shelley is my favourite of the bunch so far. All these guys apart from LTP and Bonham I've seen wrestle before, and so what I've learnt is thus: LTP can do cool flips and Brandon Bonham is really cool and a hard man. RECOMMENDED.

At this point in time, Chris Hero vs. just about anyone seems to be nothing less than "bloody brilliant".

I remember back in the day when people said Hero would never get offered a deal by the WWE because a) he had the most indy look ever and b) he didn't really care, but he certainly looks like he does now and it can't be long before both he and Claudio get offered contracts. They're big. They LOOK like stars. They're head and shoulders above just about anybody in the independents who hasn't wrestled for TNA or WWE yet. Castagnoli turned it down at one point I believe, but that was a while ago and I can't believe they would again.

Ok, while i'm going to need you to tell me more about this, i just gained back a shitload of respect for Paul London. Even having just heard of it, there's no way anything called "Finnegan the Space Owl" could be anything short of god like.

Please explain this as quickly as humanly possible.....please?

In November 2006 it was revealed that Castagnoli had signed a developmental deal with the World Wrestling Entertainment, having impressed them with an appearance on Raw (as a police officer in a backstage segment) and a successful tryout for Deep South Wrestling. Shortly after, Castagnoli was released from his WWE contract. Reports stated that this was due to Visa problems with Castagnoli, although he disputed those reports.

Ah, so maybe it was a release. I don't THINK he ever even got round to wrestling in DSW, it all happened very quickly. Either way, it is a bit strange that they signed him and released him so soon after.

Everyone should watch the Paul London & El Generico vs Young Bucks vs The Cutler Brothers - Guerilla Warfare Match. It is flippy floppy clusterfuck craziness.

I also recommend Richards/Hero from Seven and London/Generico vs. Kings of Wrestling from Cyanide: A Loving Tribute To Poison.

I don't know who the two announcers are, but I really like them. I also like the atmosphere - that they don't have a guard rail and the fans can stand right up against the ring.

I watched the Ten show drunk the other night and was thoroughly entertained. That's the only PWG show I've seen, but I'm sold. It's just fun wrestling without a hint of pretension and zero filler.

Adam Cole deserves a WWE contract. Sign that mother fucker and craft a Light Heavyweight or Cruiserweight division around him.

Pretty much why PWG is one of the only three independent promotions in the U.S. that legit rules.

Night 1 of BOLA was a boring piece of shit and no one should waste their time on it. The best stuff was only 'passably' good.

Night 2 was actually a pretty great show; a lot of variety, and not a bad match. The main event, unfortunately, suffered with from the pre-match brawl, where Hero and Excalibur were on commentary talking about a spot that would involve them later on.

About to start Night 3.

Eh; it was one of the better ones I'll admit, but I just felt that there was a LOT of miscommunication in that match, and that they were just wasting time in between high-spots. Not a problem if the match is on the shorter side. But it wasn't.

Honestly liked Pentagon vs. Drago more.

I'm to the final match. The angle at the end of Night 2 really didn't lead to much on Night 3 did it? Jack Evans is the best thing about all of these show. I don't Mike Bailey at all.

Jack Evans was absolutely amazing from Night 2 onwards (that terrible dragging tag match with the Inner City Machine Guns notwithstanding). And yeah, that balls-tacular ending angle on Night 2 lead to nothing on Night 3.

Mike Bailey is weird to me; he's such a small pudgy pasty fuck that he makes a great underdog.

It's when he's used as something OTHER than an underdog and goes deep into a tournament that I have a problem with him.

What's your match of the tournament? I loved Pentagon vs. Saber, Hero vs. Thatcher, and Saber vs. Scurll.

Defrost
October 17th, 2015, 7:49 PM
Mike Bailey is just a level of indie to deep for me.

Sabre vs Pentagon was the best tournament match for me. I really liked the AAA non tournament tag match. Well I guess considering the context it should be called a Lucha Underground tag match. The lucha guys in general, Jack Evans counts in that, were my favorite guys throughout BOLA.

i've watched everything but the triple threat final. first two days weren't any good. second round matches on the third day were awesome, each one was really good and unique. third round matches were alright, evans/hero was fun but scrull/saber was awful. started out cool but really went to hell and went way too fucking long.
