HBO.

Scorsese.

Buscemi.

Yes

Boardwalk Empire is an upcoming American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) television series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_series) from premium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premium_television) cable network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_television) HBO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HBO), set in Atlantic City, New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_City,_New_Jersey) during the Prohibition era (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition_era). Starring Steve Buscemi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Buscemi), the show is adapted from Nelson Johnson's book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Emmy award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmy_award)-winning screenwriter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenwriter) and producer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_producer) Terence Winter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_Winter) of The Sopranos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sopranos).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwalk_Empire#cite_note-0)
The pilot episode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_episode) was directed by Martin Scorsese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Scorsese) and he is expected to continue to be creatively involved in the ongoing production. On September 1, 2009, HBO picked up the series for an additional 11 episodes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episode), making the first season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_season) 12 episodes long, including the pilot.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwalk_Empire#cite_note-BEpickedup-1) HBO has stated that the series will debut on September 19, 2010.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwalk_Empire#cite_note-2)

With Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs) and Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) headlining the cast and Martin Scorsese producing, the series is yet another peg in HBO's rebuilding.

The drama is set during the years of Prohibition (boo!) in Atlantic City, with Buscemi starring as bootlegger and gangster-in-the-making Enoch "Nucky" Thompson. It has all the looks of a Scorsese film, some great period-piece sets and costumes, and of course, guns guns guns! Could it be the next Sopranos?

HBO has released the latest trailer for Boardwalk Empire.

Looking forward to this one.

Read an article about it the other day. Apparently Stringer Bell is coming out with a new show through BBC called "Luther".

There was an article about this in The Guardian last week. The Pilot sounds almost Lost-expensive so it's a bit of a gamble for HBO. But do they ever do anything wrong?

Hopefully it gets a decent airing this side of the pond, although I won't hold my breath.

ending Rome, Carnivale and Deadwood prematurely.

As for the UK airing, Sky signed a huge deal with HBO a couple of weeks back so I think this could get a decent slot.

I'm afraid to watch Deadwood/Carnivale purely for how I've heard they end.

Rome is brilliant though.

Just watched the HBO inside look into the series. Basically 15 minutes of interviews and scenes and stuff about the characters.

I'm even more excited about this now. Less than two weeks away, should be fantastic.

Lucky Luciano an Al Capone FTW.

:panic:

They also showed the construction of the 1920s Atlantic City set and Brooklyn and it looks so damn real it's spooky.

I was in no way interested in this show. However, I decided to give it a try, and I am glad I did!

Really enjoyed it, and I think this pilot episode opened the doors for a great season. I think the cast, the sets, the dialogue, and the overall story are amazing. Very excited to watch the season unfold.

Just one epic episode into Boardwalk Empire's first season, HBO has decided to renew the new series. Yes! This is hardly a surprise, as Boardwalk drew 4.8 million viewers (7 million with encore presentations factored in), the most for an HBO series premiere since 2004's Deadwood (which had The Sopranos as a lead-in).

I haven't watched it yet, I plan to later tonight.

Capone and Jimmy were talking about the various mob bosses and Capone mentioned that Colosimo didn't want to get involved in bootlegging. That is why he got shot because he was a dinosaur holding up business

Thanks Petey.

And I wasn't sure who did the shooting either. But that's okay. The scene I was talkin' about Judas was the one that took place in the restaurant in Chicago.

You know, HBO have gotta be kicking themselves for not having one of their free preview weekends to coincide with this, as they frequently did with "The Sopranos". This certainly would have sold a lot of subscriptions.

This week was a another pretty good episode. The guy with the half-face is my new favorite character. When they were at the bar and he started rattling off about guns .. I knew exactly what he was gonna be used for. Lol.

Ringo
March 5th, 2011, 4:57 PM

This is true actually. Personally I thought the likes of van Alden, Richard Harrow and Luciano were pretty fucking cool from the off, but I guess those three are pretty showy roles. Thoroughly enjoying the new season so far. The first episode was a little slow, but it was kinda catching us up so thats ok.

I like this Irish cat.. he seems like he's bringing faceguy (name?) back to Nucky. Which makes sense, because even though Jimmy brought him in.. Nucky gave him his home and he befriended Margorot and her children. Its interesting to say the least. .. AND THAT CRAZY ITALIAN GUY! I'm loving the new characters.

Just in case, don't read unless you've watched:

My favorite character killed my other favorite character. Really didn't think Manny was gonna get offed, I figured he'd be a real staple this season, though in the couple seconds after he said goodbye to his wife, I had a feeling. Richard is fucking fantastic, though, and what wound up happening was actually brilliant.

Loving how this looks to be shaping up. Jimmy isn't going to be missed at all as far as I'm concerned, and I was concerned at the end of last year.

lotjx
September 18th, 2012, 9:25 AM
I got the last few minutes and I will probably watch all of it at some point. I thought Manny was dead as soon as Richard found out about Jimmy. The question will be is Richard going to off anyone else like say Nucky or will they keep as historically accurate as possible. Mrs. Schroeder still confounds me. I like her as the schemer in season two and then as soon as her kid gets polio, its all about dumping money into the church, because the priest is a fire brand, she just turned on me. I want to like her screwing over Nucky in a direct or indirect way for killing Jimmy, but she comes off so doe eyed at times, I have no idea if this is all part of her plan or if she just lost her mind after what happened to her daughter and she is going from one cause to another in hopes that one of them will make her daughter better. I just have no idea, maybe, I will get a better idea when I watch this episode, but I had this problem since last season, too.

Finally caught up.

Richard Harrow gets cooler and cooler. What a guy. The Omar of Boardwalk Empire. Hope he slaughters Gillian in brutal fashion.

It's rare that I'm shocked/impressed by excessive violence, but this show has managed to do that a few times - the scalping, the Jew being strung up and slit open (which reminded me of Pusher III), Owen strangling that guy and managing to slice his fingers off with the force, Eli smashing that man's face in with a wrench, policemen being burnt alive etc.

Good job.

Caught up. One good reason not to be a gangster .. your wife will likely cheat on you with someone you pay. Seems to be a common theme in gangster shows/movies.

Teddy is seriously creepy. He's going to kill someone.. or get killed. I was 100% sure that Margaret was going to shoot him in the greenhouse at the end of the episode. Not so much .. that life/death situation must have got her really riled up. :naughty:

I can't tell if the fishbowl guy is going to help Nucky or fuck Nucky ..

Glad to see Eli back in the mix. He's one of my favorite characters .. mainly because he seems to be the most real character to me. Him and Owen anyway.. and Chaulkey .. Chaulkey is the man.

So, did Al's boss die or just fall asleep at the end? .. cuz, it looked like he just kinda died. Al didn't seem bothered though, so I'm assuming he just fell asleep. It seems like Al's time to rise is at hand.

Ringo
November 12th, 2012, 9:39 PM
...

Yeah, Torrio was essentially showing he's ready to pass the torch I guess. I think the real life Torrio did similar but some years later.

van Alden finally losing it was terrific. We all knew he was going to take that iron to that guy's big fat face. The role is so perfect for Michael Shannon. Will be interesting to see how they incorporate him back into the story back in Atlantic City. The hint of tension between him and Capone was neat.

Confused Nucky was amusing. Was fun to see a less serious side more in line with Buscemi's usual roles and it worked under the circumstances. "Work on my shoes later!". Incidentally, we need more Chalky.

I liked the Remus arrest scene. Ridiculous house.

Been loving Richard Harrow this series. He started out as "cool guy with half a face but not much depth" but his development over the last few episodes has been great. I like his relationship with Tommy, his reluctant loyalty to Gillian, the dark awkwardness, tragic loneliness. He's probably my favourite character now along with van Alden. There's a bunch of people I'd love to see him brutally murder. Gyp and Gillian being top of the list of course.

Ringo
November 27th, 2012, 8:34 AM
Well that episode was fucking BRILLIANT. Perfect penultimate episode of a series - it started hot and maintained the pace. Finale is going to be boss.

All that I wanted to happen appears to be happening. Harrow preparing his arsenal! Chalky back in business! Capone joining in!

Only thing missing was mental van Alden.

Richard Harrow cannot possibly have a happy ending for his story arc. He's too tragic of a character I think.
I'm stoked too, but I don't know if he'll make it to next season, although I would love for him to kick ass and live.

Gyp Rosetti's gotta die, but I don't want him too. He's been one of my favorite season villain's of all the series I have watched. I have him up there with Trinity as part of great villains.

Oh my God. The entire episode.

Spoilers so don't fucking read 'em unless you saw it or want to get whacked:

Fuck this show it fucking sucks oh my god they fucking ruined everything my life and fuck and fuck.

Anyway the big deal is that Nucky's fucking takeover again was a deus ex machina thing but actually made brilliant fucking sense. He's always been the politician who knows how to work outside of the gangsters and it fucking shined, and looking back at past episodes it all fucking wound up working brilliantly and escapes the god out of the fucking machine thing. As things fell into place for him I was like, "Wait, no... Wait, this makes such sense... Holy shit, Mellon's on the phone and Nucky just fucking schooled all of these motherfuckers."

Insane how that all came together.

The Gyp/Incest Bitch thing flipped on me. I really thought she was gonna end him but Gyp got it in. But she's just tripping instead... I assume because she's been rocking heroin for quite a while just as she introduced it to her poor fucking son. Her moment with Nucky in the hallway made me feel bad for her again. She's been severely fucked up in her her since she was 13.

The race relations between Capone and Chalky were well done, I think. That they came together for the hit but were still on their separate sides made me think they'd wind up shaking hands. They just gave nods and then Capone's back off for Chicago.

I never thought Gyp would make it through the season. Which is too bad because I love crazy fucking fucks who like to be choked. For a second I thought he'd make it through but the last scene with him I thought he'd either make his way over to Sicily, actually go out west or kill himself. I really thought he was gonna take that gun and kill himself. Then he was done and the full gangsters were there.

What else happened this episode?

Oh right. The best character on the show.

He's probably the one I'm most emotionally attached to. I just want him to be happy.

The timing of him rolling into there was great. His entire arsenal was fucking badass, his marksmanship from WWI is obvious so it doesn't make it seem like he's an action hero, he's actually extremely adept at what he does.

When he said, "Close your eyes," it was a FUCK ALMIGHTY moment.

And then as fucking badass as he his, his walking away after dropping him off and saying, "He's safe, that's all that matters..."

Richard Harrow is my hero.

I don't think I even covered everything I think here.

9 fucking months.

Also, DARE I SAY (not really a spoiler if you saw the last couple years)

I don't miss Jimmy at all. At all. He served his part.

I don't even miss Owen. He served his part too.

I think the build up of Capone and Luciano with Meyer have done exactly what this series said it was going to do in the beginning with these youngsters, and what would ultimately happen years down the line

Anyone been watching the new series?

Really enjoying it so far, unsurprisingly.

Dr. Narcisse is quite a character!

Indeed. He's got a way to go before he's Gyp Rosetti but Jeffrey Wright is doing a damn good job.

If Chalky goes, I can see him taking Narcisse with him.

For some reason, I can see Eli's son taking a dirtnap.

He's clearly gonna play a role in the Eli informant angle. Eli doesn't know yet that his son's tied into the business, so he'll probably end up losing both of them in one way or another.

I saw it coming from a few episodes back. There had to be a reason he was getting on with her and the show just does that sort of shit all the time. Getting her sobered up and trusting him while all her synapses were firing rapidly like an ex-addicts was brilliant. Though my girl convinced me in the end, "He really cares about her!" and I'm like yeah he does. Then we are both like FUCKING KNEW IT!

Sad there's only one episode left. It feels like this season was especially slow in its build and the finale is just going to lead to all sorts of fuckery made to get me dying for next season. Which means they did their job, but I really, really, REALLY don't want it to end this year.

I haven't checked ratings or anything, but it's been renewed right? I'm only concerned because folks I know who've watched it haven't this year at all, so in scared that might be indicative of the viewership at large.

Pulsating end to the season. Eli gets himself into some pickles doesn't he.

Really sad to see the end of Richard. Interesting things ahead for Narcisse.

Finally got to see Season 4. Man, just man. I loved Chalky White through the season, but man did that singer storyline get old. Dr. Narcisse was great. . Less Mrs. Schroeder was a good call. Nucky asking Dr. Narcisse who the fuck he thinks he is maybe the single best moment of the season. Good move for showing how inept Hoover really was when it came to the criminal underworld and how much of a racist dickbag he was. Coke out Capone was the best. I'd fuck fat Patricia Arquette, maybe...Eddie's last two episodes were tremendous in writing, directing and acting.

Now to the bad part, can someone explain to me why Richard Harrow, the Michael Jordan of killing on this show was taken out in such a shitty way. When he goes to Nucky for a job, he is on garbage duty. Lebron James just walked through that door and you are putting him on the bench? Granted iIt was cool to see him be the one to take the shot on Narcisse, but man that scene just felt wrong. I understand they have a hell of a character in Dr. Narcisse, but I think he is very limited on what he can do now. Chalkie is still going to go after him and Masseria can't be trusted. Also, why is Lucky and Abe morons on this show? Didn't they run New York for awhile? Agent Knox should have eaten a bullet early on when he would go from Boy Scout to psychopath that should have been a tip off. Willie got pretty damn annoying in the middle and sorta made it out ok.

I wasn't thrilled with the finale and while it does set up the finale season to be interesting. I am not sure who I want to see make it out at the end. Richard was at least someone you could cheer for. Now, there is no one. Eli is fucked. Capone is only going to get worse as well Zod. Mrs. Schroeder is annoying as fuck. Rothstien is cool, but he is close to becoming unhinged and he has that weird vampire quality about him. You can't cheer for the Feds. Gillian deserves all she is getting and it won't shock me to see her stay in prison. The best relationship on the show has been Tommy and Richard now that is gone. This show does a good job of putting people in rooms together you never thought you would see like Hoover and Dr. Narcisse and Mrs. Schroeder and Albert. I am wondering what the finale will be. Nucky has to die much like Walter White or he may just make it out. Maybe they will fast forward to the Stock Crash or the Untouchables. Who knows either way, I will watch, but there is going to be something missing when I do.
