The all things Bellator thread..

http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/bellator_fighting_championships.jpg

Really stoked for season 3 of Bellator to start. Got 4 title fights this season and 3 new tournaments in the 205 & 135 lb divisions for men and 115 lb division for women.

The very first Bellator Fight I saw was a few weeks ago. Somebody dislocated their knee so badly that it looked like their shin slid up their thigh. it was pretty nasty.

I'm watching it right now... I'm always glad to find MMA to watch in addition to the UFC. The women fighting they've shown in these last couple of weeks have been really exciting as well (Also nice to see female MMA fighting that wasn't Gina Carano.)

I tend to stick to TV events when watching MMA so WEC and Bellator have introduced me to some new things MMA-wise.

They've done a really good job of finding really talented fighters that aren't in bigger organizations. They've definitely created some serious prospects for the sport.

Neil Grove has been added to the heavyweight tournament and Hector Lombard will have another non-title fight @ Bellator 24 (im surprised he's not tired from his 8 second win over Jay Silva lol).. against Herbert Goodman (?) .. whoever that is.

OD50
July 14th, 2010, 9:53 AM
15-8 record, pretty experienced. Biggest win is against Jordan Radev I guess. Should be a fairly easy night of work for Lombard.

Beast..

Dubya
July 14th, 2010, 2:33 PM
God he really is a beast. I'd love to see him get to fight some better MWs .. as much as I don't want Strikeforce to corrupt Bellator with their shit philosophy on MMA, I'd like to see Lombard beat on some of their MWs.

Shonie Carter vs. Torrance Talyor @ Bellator 25

Lazurus
July 14th, 2010, 6:21 PM
Carter only fights cans and has a terrible record against them. I don't think I've ever heard of Torrance Taylor but my money's on him.

Dubya
July 14th, 2010, 6:22 PM
I know, right? Lol. I'm sure that's what will happen. Bellator's been so good at finding this underground talent. This guy could be a total badass and Carter would never know.

Lazurus
July 14th, 2010, 6:26 PM
No-one would ever know; who the hell is he. At this point I'm fairly sure I'd beat Shonie Carter.

Lazurus
July 14th, 2010, 6:27 PM
Oh dear.

http://www.mmauniverse.com/fighters/SS14998

He's 4-4 and on a 2 fight lose streak. How the hell does he get on Strikeforce?

Dubya
July 14th, 2010, 6:30 PM
Well Jason Dent and Fabrcio Camoes aren't bad losses, but I've never heard of any of those other guys .. cuz Strikeforce is ran by chimpanzees.

Dubya

Bellator HW tourney shaping up ..

Eddie Sanchez (12-3 MMA, 2-0 BFC)
Scott Barrett (10-1 MMA, 1-0 BFC)
Damian Grabowski (12-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Neil Grove (8-2-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Mike Hayes (12-3-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Rogent Lloret (9-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC)

2 more spots to fill.

Lyman Good was voted the Bellator champ most likely to lose his title .. that's who I voted for too. Askren is gonna grapple fuck his face. These results are pretty spot-on I'd say:

56% = Welterweight Lyman Good
23% - Featherweight Joe Soto
12% - Lightweight Eddie Alvarez
9% - Middleweight Hector Lombard

OD50
July 17th, 2010, 2:36 PM
Yup. Can't see Shlemenko having anything to offer against Lombard except 250 spinning kicks/punches.

Soto/Warren and Alvarez/Curran should be the closest fights for sure. Good is a strong dude with some powerful striking so he could catch Askren, odds are he will be dry-humped to death though.

Dubya
July 17th, 2010, 2:52 PM
Yeah, there's a good chance that Soto will have the same fate as Lyman. Warren and Askren are basically the same fighter.

Curran doesn't seem like he should have a chance against Alvarez, but he shouldn't have had a chance against Huerta or Imada .. so who the hell knows ?

OD50
July 17th, 2010, 2:55 PM
I think Curran the younger has looked really solid. I doubt he can keep up with Eddie though.

Dubya
July 17th, 2010, 2:56 PM
I'm not sure he can either, but I can't wait to find out for sure. That DREAM arcticle about expansion had someone from DREAM saying he thinks that Bellator won't be around much longer. I hope that's just BS talk. They've been putting on good fights and really showcasing some new talent.

OD50
July 17th, 2010, 3:06 PM
As much as I love them I think there's a bigger chance of DREAM going under before Bellator does. Japanese promotors will say that they're doing great and is ready to take over the world right up until they go bankrupt.

Speaking of Japan..
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/7/17/1574681/ex-ufc-welterweight-yoshiyuki

Yoshiyuki Yoshida has signed a three fight deal with Bellator. He will make his debut Aug 19 against Dan Hornbuckle. Tough first fight for sure.

Eddie Sanchez vs. Neil Grove in the HW tourney season opener.

Dubya
July 20th, 2010, 1:04 PM
Brock Lesnar's training partner, Cole Konrad is no.7 for the HW tourney. Makes sense. He has won 2 non-tourney bouts for them. One spot left.

Eddie Sanchez (12-3 MMA, 2-0 BFC)
Scott Barrett (10-1 MMA, 1-0 BFC)
Damian Grabowski (12-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Neil Grove (8-2-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Mike Hayes (12-3-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Rogent Lloret (9-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC)
Kole Conrad (4-0 MMA, 2-0 BFC)

Dubya
August 12th, 2010, 6:52 PM
Apparently Pat Curran is injured, so Roger Huerta is gonna step in and fight Eddie Alvarez in a non-title fight @ Bellator 33

That's an exciting fight and if Huerta can pull the win, he surely sets himself up to face the winner of Curran/Alvarez whenver it happens.

UncannyIowan
August 13th, 2010, 1:27 PM
I really like Huerta, he looked really good in that Maynard fight after being off for a year. Comeback to the UFC!!

Joe Soto vs Joe Warren is where its at for me. Love Warren and his fantastic wrestling. He fought Bibiano Fernandez in Dream and was caught in the deepest arm bar i have seen. They stopped the fight, but he wouldnt tap.

PMBR
August 13th, 2010, 3:43 PM
Roger has an outstanding record and yes he is coming off of a loss, but it's not like he was finished or destroyed. He has major publicity behind him and was recently on TMZ shown defending a woman and doing something that every man in America wants to do: beat the living fuck out of an asshole who hit a woman.

Bellator easily could have given Roger a title shot, but he didn't earn it. He didn't win the tournament and he is coming off of a loss. This is why Bellator's title's mean more than Strikeforce titles.

UncannyIowan
August 13th, 2010, 11:24 PM
Crushed him. Those last couple shots were murder death kill lol.

I would definitely pay to see this guy against some of the more well known fighters in his weight class. Get some more world wide experience, hop over to Japan and then go to the UFC. I like Bellator, but they don't have the depth...not taking anything away from dude but it's not like he's fighting Wanderlai or Nate Marquardt, 2 guys I'd like to see him fight.

Huerta could beat Alvarez, go do a move, come back and fight for the title and win. That'd definitely cement his status, Alvarez is respected, but again, another talent that I'd like to see in the UFC against BJ Penn, Gomi, Florian, and others.

Lyman Good vs. Ben Askren for the 170-lb title
Roger Huerta vs. Eddie Alvarez 'superfight'

Joe Soto on Joe Warren:

"I think I'm a lot better rounded that he is. This isn't a wrestling, this is MMA. We don't know whose wrestling is going to be better until we get in there. I'm more well rounded - I'm going to kick his ass. It's going to take a different opponent for me to lose this belt - not Joe Warren. I've grown a lot in this sport, but I feel like I haven't gotten the opportunity to use all of my tools. Maybe Joe Warren will push me to use all of those tools. It would suck to lose to him; I never want to lose to a dirt bag like that."

http://www.mmamania.com/2010/9/2/1665820/joe-soto-it-would-suck-to-lose-to

Man, what's up with all the fighting word today?

Looking forward to this fight.

OD50
September 3rd, 2010, 12:42 PM
Not sure if Joe is the baddest man on the planet but he may just be the fucking toughest. The mental strenght he displayed against both Patricio Pitbull and Soto is amazing, he got absolutely smashed by both just to come back like nothing had happened and kept on fighting.

Warren's plan now seems to be to fight Omigawa at Dream.16, get a shot at the Dream FW champ (Bibiano Fernandez) and go after the 2012 Olympics. I'm guessing he would want to defend the Bellator title once or twice before going back to wrestling as well.

As you guys probably know Bibiano is the only loss on Warren's record. Should be an interesting rematch.

PMBR
September 3rd, 2010, 12:55 PM
How terrible would that be for both companies though? To have Soto lose the title, to have Fernandez lose the title, and then the champion of both companies leave the sport for multiple years so he can fight in the Olympics. Total disarray in the title scene of each company.

Dubya
September 3rd, 2010, 1:04 PM
True. His return, however, would be huge.. I don't know that it would be multiple years. I think it would just be a little over a year.. and if its timed right, may not interfere. Who knows how all that shit works. Either way, the man is a little beast and I hope to see him again soon. He's been rolling through some really tough guys. Has a very impressive resume for having less than 10 fights. You gotta think though, for bellator .. they have to have another tournament to get him a challenger, so that buys them some time anyway.

OD50
September 3rd, 2010, 1:11 PM
Fall 2011 to I guess August 2012.

And yeah, just crown a new FW tournament champ and let him fight Warren for the undisputed title when he returns.

Dubya
September 3rd, 2010, 1:14 PM
yeah .. thats pretty much how I figured it in my head too. Crown a new champ while he's gone and then when he returns, you've got a big headlining fight already made .. espescially big if he is able to go to DREAM and take their title.

God, I'd love to see him in the WEC.

UncannyIowan
September 3rd, 2010, 1:39 PM
I was excited that I caught the replay last night, spaced off the event, but I got to see Warren/Soto. I had read the results prior, and it was an amazing comeback for Warren who is possibly the toughest 145er out there.

Say whaaaaaaaaat?!?!? Lol.

Would love to see Warren / Aldo or Warren / Brown

UncannyIowan
September 3rd, 2010, 1:55 PM
Aldo has yet to show me how tough he is cuz of how he just whips that ass, I've never seen a fight where he was in any trouble.....

OD50
September 3rd, 2010, 1:58 PM
Hmm, Warren/Aldo = Sonnen/Silva?

I can see the similarities.

Only problem is that Warren is undersized for FW, he's said himself that he is suited better for 135. I think that's his wrestling weight.

Dubya
September 3rd, 2010, 2:00 PM
I don't think Warren would be able to get Aldo down, just like he couldn't get Soto down .. and Aldo is a better striker than Soto. I think Warren would get KO'd in the early rounds.

OD50
September 3rd, 2010, 2:04 PM
Soto is a way better wrestler than Aldo though. And Warren is a way better wrestler than anyone Aldo has faced in the past, Urijah and MTB are not nearly in the same league.

Aldo is the huge favorite of course, but the match could also go the same way as Warren/Pitbull. Freire is very similar to Aldo actually.

Dubya
September 3rd, 2010, 2:14 PM
Did you see the fight after Warren / Soto .. that dude with the pink mohawk, Reddiger, had some sick BJJ and Gomez has limbs made of rubber cuz I don't know how he didn't tap.. I was cringing.

All that's been announced for next week so far is:

Rich Clementi vs. Carey Vanier
Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Anthony Leone
Clementi / Vanier should be an entertaining fight. Karakhanyan was supposed to fight Alvin Robinson, which would've been good too .. don't know who Anthony Leone is.

Crazy to see big RICCO in Bellator.. they're really starting to get name fighters more and more.. name fighters on a skid or a comeback, sure .. but you gotta start somewhere.

Great card last night for anyone that was curious..

check out the Rich Clementi / Carey Vanier fight and the Matt Horwich / Eric Schambari fight .. both split decisions and both good fights.

UncannyIowan
September 10th, 2010, 11:27 PM
I kinda felt Rich got robbed. Not with the whole knee ordeal, but I thought he did more in the fight to warrant maybe UD with 29/28 across the boards. The last round looked like he lost, but the first 2 I felt Rich did more.

Ricco actually looked really good. I hope he does come back to the UFC, I could see it happening within a year if he keeps winning. I think it said he's won 15 out of his last 17 fights, that's good no matter what level of competition you're fighting. Herman is no joke, it's a good fight for Ricco to display his skills on national t.v. The fact that he's a former world champion, imo beat Big Nog in Pride, and he's just had a really good career in general, looks to be back on the right path.....

Bellator=good shit. Didn't get to see anything from last year, glad I get to now!

Dubya
September 11th, 2010, 6:37 PM
I kinda thought that Rich was working more too, but thats why they say not to leave it in the judges hands cuz ya never know what they're watching for. Was a good fight either way and I agree.. I've really enjoyed Bellator and I like that name fighters are starting to make there way there.

Wow .. Cole Konrad shouldn't be on TV. That was undoubtedly one of the worst, most boring fights I've ever seen. Top 5 easily. He is the definition of grapplefuck. Very, very green still. I hope Grove can put him down. I honestly think that he can because I can't see Cole lasting 5 rounds.

UncannyIowan
September 20th, 2010, 11:20 PM
And u can see Grove? Honestly, as weird as it sounds, I see Cole being more of a grinder than Grove because Cole is a really good wrestler and might not be Cheick Kongo built but he could go 5. Grove could knock him out in the first though I think cuz if he doesn't he's going to get taken to the ground and tire out then get TKOd.

Sucks about Ricco though, that was going to be a huge fight for both men and I wonder if Ricco will even compete in MMA again.

That's just it .. he can do it for 15 .. but it will be a title fight, so can he do it for 25 is what I'm getting at. He looked tired after that last fight.. now imagine him against someone who's actually good in Grove and having to go another 2 rounds .. I'm going with the Viking.

JESUS CHRIST, never have I seen a guy act that way after getting knocked out. Sorry Sean Jordan, but I don't think you're going to wake up fully from that.

Fuji is amazing, I've seen her fight a couple times on youtube, first time seeing her on t.v. Amazing. She's a legend, what women 10 years from now will be compared to. She's going to dominate that weight class.

I haven't watched it yet, what happened with Jordan?

The guy he fought, Mark Holata, caught him with a mean right that connected and put him out. Now, that wasn't so unusual, except for the part where he was out but basically having a dream where he was in a fight. They had 4-5 guys trying to hold him and he was eyes-shut asleep. This went on for a good minute AT LEAST cuz they cut to a commercial right after.

Now, I've seen guys out of it and try to take the ref down, but I've never seen someone who was in a state of REM sleep that was trying to continue lol.

UncannyIowan
October 15th, 2010, 1:11 PM
Yeah a lot of people I talked to thought Konrad would gas out from attempting to lay and pray on Neil the whole fight and Neil would catch him and put him to sleep. I was surprised that Konrad snatched the arm, but I'm more surprised at how few fighters go for armbar submissions like the kimura which I find to be one of the easiest submission moves to apply in a fight.

It does kinda show how weak the HW division is universally when you look @ Bellator's HW division and the best guy they have is Konrad.

The best guy they have RIGHT NOW .. but look at all their champs, Bellator is all about prospects. They're all gonna be unknown for a while. Guys like Joe Warren, Eddie Alvarez, and Hector Lombard are really building names for themselves though. It'll just take time. This was their first HW tourney.

Prospect is really the best way to describe him.

A one dimensional wrestler with a lot of drive and determination, but he knows how to use that wrestling to get the W.

That's the description that comes to mind when thinking of Konrad. But it also fit Josh Koscheck when he first broke onto the scene.

Ya know, that's honestly one of the things I like about Bellator. I just like to watch fights, so I don't really need a big name for me to watch. If its on and I can watch it .. I probably will. Anyway, though.. I kinda like the fact that I don't really always know who all the people fighting are. It makes it more interesting to watch in a way cuz I don't know what to expect from either guy and as tournaments progress, you kinda learn more and more about the fighters. I dig it.

pumped for tonight.

Eddie Alvarez v. Roger Huerta
Ben Askren v. Lyman Good for the Welterweight Title
Deividas Taurosevicius vs. Wilson Reis
Rick Hawn v. Levon Maynard

3 good fights for sure there. Don't know much bout Hawn/Maynard

Rick Hawn was very impressive in his fight. Tossing Maynard down like the Judo world champ he is and then TKOing him. Great execution.

Askren/Good was a great fight. Lyman was very Good off his back. ahahahah get it? He really was, though. He pounded Askren's face in.. Askren as just on top most of the time and got the hard fought unanimous decision.

Huerta/Alvarez was good.. slugfest. Alvarez busted Huerta up good.

Will watch Taurosevicius/Reis tomorrow.

MMA Spot - On The Spot ~ Bjorn Rebney (http://www.mmaspot.net/index.php/redblack/comments/20101021_on_the_spot_bjorn_rebney/)

This Thursday, October 21, Bellator Fighting Championships will conclude its third season, live from the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The event is sure to produce some fireworks as Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez will face UFC-veteran Roger Huerta in a lightweight super fight. Co-headlining will be the Bellator welterweight championship bout between current champion, Lyman Good, and season three tournament winner Ben Askren.

MMA Spot's Jesse Denis recently caught up with the man that has become the face of the promotion, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. Denis spoke to Rebney about the promotion, got his opinion on the controversy concerning Bellator's Fox Sports Net television deal, Eddie Alvarez versus Gilbert Melendez, and much more.

********
Denis: You previously mentioned the signings of Joe Warren, Dan Hornbuckle, and Ben Askren. Bellator is specifically known for signing prospects and up-and-coming fighters, effectively setting yourselves apart from most organizations. While most promotions jump at the "UFC-veteran" tag, Bellator looks for new talent. Can you talk about this mindset a bit?
Rebney: Absolutely, that is something I hope sets us apart for years to come. We've been very aggressive in going out and finding guys like Mike Campbell, Ben Askren, Joe Warren, Dan Hornbuckle, Eddie Alvarez, Hector Lombard, Joe Soto, and a lot of different fighters who are world class guys. They deserve to be in the top 10, but are brand new in the U.S. market. Although they don't have that history behind them, with UFC and Strikeforce, but they've done spectacularly well.

********
Denis: Let's talk about the Alvarez-Melendez situation. Both men have gone on record saying that they want to fight one another. Scott Coker recently said the two of you have spoken about it, and had nothing but positive things to say. He did, however, say that an injury to Melendez's hand is keeping the fight from happening. Is this fight possible, or is it another MMA pipe dream?
Rebney: It's completely and utterly possible. It's one of those things I've said many times. I like Scott, he's a heck of a good promoter. He puts on great shows, puts a lot of butts in seats. But promoters are unfortunately guilty, on a regular basis, of talking sideways about issues. You always hear statements to the effects of, "there's complications, issues that need to be resolved." I've said many times, there are no issues with this fight. Eddie wants it. Gilbert wants it. I would make the fight. It can take place on any network Scott would want it to take place on, and any venue he would like it to happen in. If he wants to do it on Showtime, and wants it to happen in the HP Pavilion, those are both fine with me. I'm more than comfortable going on the record saying they're fine with me.

Eddie has got a very tough fight on his hands coming up in the next few days against Roger Huerta, who is virtually fighting for his MMA life. Once that fight is over, if Eddie is victorious, I'm more than open to doing that fight. Anytime. Anywhere. The only thing holding that fight up is Scott's willingness to make it.

I had heard from Scott, that Gilbert has a hand problem and was getting married. Hopefully his hand is healing. I'm a big Gilbert Melendez fan. A) I hope his hand healed because he's a good guy, I love watching him fight. B) If that's the only thing holding it up on Scott's part, I would love to make the fight.

I would love to get in contact with Scott again. Hopefully if Eddie is victorious we can make that happen.

********
Denis: Let's talk about the Fox Sports Net (FSN) deal for a bit. There have been a lot of problems and complaints from the viewership side. Of course, I'm speaking to Bellator being run on tape delay, sometimes not even run at all, in favor of football, baseball, or other sports. Can you clear up the contract a bit for us? Will this be resolved, or is it even looked at as a problem?
Rebney: It is absolutely an issue. Definitely a problem and issue that myself, the president of my company (Tim Danaher), and the people who worked out our TV deal have been working diligently to resolve. We do recognize it to be a problem. We're working very, very long hours to address it and fix it. We hope that when we're in position to make announcements for seasons four, five, and beyond, people will see that we have addressed that issue. Other parts of the interview touch on the organization's YouTube success, thoughts on Paulo Filho, Megumi Fujii, other prospects, and Bjorn's predictions for tonight's fights.

I saw Hector Lombard and I thought he had the frame of John Cena on a midget's body, that dude is Overeem-big.

Fujii losing by split, idk what to think of that. Not a fan of the warrior princess' performance, but she toughed it out against THE best female fighter in that division. I'd like to see a rematch but Bellator's format with title fights isn't something I'm a big fan of. It's entertaining, but it seems that the challengers fight a lot more than the champions do in a 12 month period.

Dubya
October 29th, 2010, 12:41 PM
That's not necessarily true .. Lombard fought twice this season before the title fight .. all the other champs fought at least once too.

I like the tournament format, but I don't like that its the ONLY way to get a title shot. Rebney actually said that if Huerta would've beat Alvarez, he'd STILL have to win a tournament to get a title shot .. to which I call bullshit because it would create a buzz among fans and they'd practically demand a Huerta/Alvarez title match .. the demand would be too great to deny it and they'd be stupid to do so, as a smaller company.

It seemed like the challengers were fighting month to month, but when I compared Lombard's 2010 schedule with Shlemenko's it was only a one fight difference. I guess I assumed before looking at records that the champion would sit out until the tournament was over. Edit: Upon further investigation I noticed the level of competition Lombard fought wasn't exactly top competition, it'd be interesting to see him against some top talent for once.

The tournament format is solid, but what I don't like is what you said, where if someone like Huerta or Neer had beat Alvarez they would STILL have to go through the tournament. What they should do is this:

Say Huerta beat Alvarez in a non-title fight. Still give the tournament winner the title shot against Alvarez, but give Huerta the first title shot after that. That way you're not taking anything away from the person who fought 3-4 guys to get a title shot, but you're also not taking away the fact that someone did beat the champion and deserves a title shot.

Dubya
October 29th, 2010, 12:54 PM
Yeah, that's exactly what I think they should and honestly would have done if it happened.

He said he'd have to win a tournament, but if he beat Alvarez, they'd get fans demanding that fight .. it would be far too great of a demand for a smaller company like that to ignore. Any promotion can put on great fights, but when you've got a fight that people REALLY WANNA SEE .. I mean, its a no-brainer.

As much as I love Alvarez too.. Rebney saying that he should shoot up the rankings with a win over Huerta was laughable .. a win over a guy who just lost to Pat Curran shoots you up the rankings??? Riiiiiiiiiiight .. so then Bryan Baker must be a top 5 middleweight now cuz he beat Jeremy Horn and he was in the UFC .. ???

The other thing that they mentioned was that on Fox sports, they were pre-empted a lot. That shouldn't happen on MTV2. On the other hand, wrestling has never worked out very well on MTV, despite being the demographic they were going after.

UncannyIowan
December 14th, 2010, 2:21 PM
Also keep in mind, FX is more available than MTV2. Most cable companies you have to pay even more to get channels like MTV2, it's not like it's part of your basic cable package.

Kind of like the Lucha shit, I heard the ratings for that were hideous. And while MMA has a growing fanbase, and MTV does have Bully Beatdown, I just think FX would've been a smarter move because of availability.

I don't know about the demographic though, MTV2 is just basically MTV only a tad more videos here and there. I don't know if the MMA demographic they're looking for watches 16 and Pregnant and loves Diddy Dirty Money. Seriously, I have MTV2, the channel is not what it used to be just 2-3 years ago when you could turn on and see Cage's "Shoot Frank" video and not have to worry about reruns of Real World challenges or whatever that show is being on 24/7.

They have a better chance at inking a deal with VH1 when it comes to grabbing the demographic they're shooting for, I know more MMA fans who watch their reality shit than anything MTV pukes out.

How can you not love Joe Warren .. he's planning on defending his Bellator 145 lb. title twice next year and entering Bellator's 135 lb. tournament and capturing that title as well. Then, he's taking 6-7 months off to win the olympics.

"I'm in a position right now where I'm the best wrestler in the world," Warren said. "My technique is there, and I have my coaches. Right now, I'm physically better than I've ever been. Fighting is helping that.

"I still train at the Olympic Training Center three or four times a week. I believe I can win this Olympic championship. It's the only thing I didn't win in wrestling."

"Wrestling is not the same," Warren said. "People do it their whole life to win, and if they're not winning now, they're not going to start winning 10 years out of their prime for money. If that was the case before, then these guys would still be around.

"However, I'm happy to have any guys come out of retirement and do whatever. Make sure you come out of retirement in my weightclass because I'll kick your [expletive] ass."

"I'll fight February for Bellator, July for Bellator, then enter the 135-pound tournament for Bellator," Warren said. "Then I will stop fighting in December of next year and win the Olympics.

"I would like to win the gold, win the 135-pound belt, defend my 145-pound belt, and then come win some other belts. I believe I can get it done. It's my love. I've done it my whole life. I'm going to go get a gold medal in London, and it's $250,000, so come on."

"Wrestling is a progression sport," Warren said. "You get better with age. It's skill level, it's technique, it's muscle memory. If you're older and still not hurt and ready to rock and roll, then why not get it done?

"Not a lot of people can do it. I believe I can."

Bellator signed Ben "killa b" Saunders (9-3) today. Not a bad signing for them. Ben is a tough dude and still fairly young with tons of potential. He went 4-3 in the UFC, but only because he really jumped ahead of himself with those Swick/Fitch/Hallman fights. He really shouldn't have been in any of those fights. He's ambitious though and saw the oppurtunity attached to their names.. but quickly found out why they'd made names for themselves.

Apparently he won't be in the tournament. Could just be a regular non-tourney bout for a future spot .. or they could even put him against Askren in a non-title 'superfight' .. he's enough of a name for that. Who knows .. he could even beat him.

Jay Hieron (19-4) vs. Steve Carl (11-2)

Yep. I think its a good idea. They can't compete with the UFC and they know that. Instead of trying, they're capitalizing in a way. I know when I'm sitting around on a saturday, waiting for a UFC/Strikeforce card to start .. I'm just in the mood for some mma and I'd rather watch some live fights, full of great prospects, than some old Unleashed episode or something. I think its a good idea really.

Maybe over the next year, they can gain a little more steam and try to combat a UFC fight night or something, but I think they're unlike Strikeforce in that they know they can't compete with the UFC or anything.. so they're just trying to be as fan-friendly as possible.

Yeah, but its better as a whole for the sport to have more promotions around the world .. otherwise, you'd never know about any of these great fighters and they'd never have a chance to be in the bigger leagues. It's not like the UFC would realistically go there more than twice a year.

Hector Lombard vs. Falaniko Vitale at Bellator 44 .. Vitale is a Team Punishment guy and a veteran .. 31-9 .. has notable wins over Yushin Okami, Matt Lindland, Dave Menne, and Aaron Riley .. has been in the cage (but lost) with Robbie Lawler, Trevor Prangley, Frank Trigg, Jeremy Horn, and Jason Miller. ..

Joe Warren, Joe Soto, Ben Askren, Lyman Good, Eddie Alvarez, Jay Hieron, Dan Hornbuckle, Pat Curran, Toby Imada, Zack Makovsky, Jose Vega, Ed West, Patricio Freire, Georgi Karakhanyan, Carey Vanier, Ronnie Mann ..

A lot of talent in 135/45/55/70 divisions .. well, maybe not a lot .. but there are definitely some talented guys.

I think some of those names such as Askren, Warren, you'll be seeing them in the near future. Joe Warren, kind of a toss up though cuz he's like 33 now or some shit. He might if he feels Bellator isn't offering him the top level talent the UFC can offer him. Hornbuckle, Curran, Heiron, not sure about those guys because if they're not there already it makes you wonder why not? Especially Jay, wtf is he doing going to Bellator? I thought he was all about fighting Nick Diaz in Strikeforce or going to get his revenge against GSP!?!?!

You're thinking of the wrong Curran .. you're thinking of Jeff Curran .. Pat Curran is his younger brother.. he's only 23 and beat Roger Huerta and Toby Imada to get his title shot with Alvarez coming up.

Strikeforce kinda messed around with Jay Hieron, but he's won like 7 fights in a row .. no huge names, but Jason High, Jesse Taylor, and Joe Riggs are at least KNOWN I guess. ..

I think Askren and Cole Konrad will make their way to UFC at some point. I still think most of those guys could give some of the UFC fighters some damn good fights.

Yeah, but its better as a whole for the sport to have more promotions around the world .. otherwise, you'd never know about any of these great fighters and they'd never have a chance to be in the bigger leagues. It's not like the UFC would realistically go there more than twice a year..

Nobody talking about last night's Bellator?

I thought it was a bad decision in the Hornbuckle/Weedman fight. That's another example of the guy on top earning the round despite not being in control. From the guard, Hornbuckle controlled the wrists, took no damage and threatened with submissions. Such a shame.

Hieron vs Lapsley
Lapsley has every right in the world to be pissed. Wasn't unconscious and was doing a good job of defending the choke. Josh Rosenthal is an amazing referee though, but that was a shitty move by Jay Hieron. He told Rosenthal that Lapsley was asleep and Rosenthal stopped it immediately. It's the win that matters and Hieron was going to get that win regardless. I believe that he thought Lapsley was legitimately out and wasn't trying to screw him.

Judo Jim got handled by Rick Hawn. Plain and simple. I'm interested to see how Hawn matches up with the rest of the field.

I expected Lyman Good to come in and earn a quick stoppage. Very surprised that it made it to decision. Uneventful first round that could have gone either way. Good tagged him right before the bell. I would have liked to see a bit more killer instinct after Lozano got hurt in the 2nd round, but Good didn't do anything for the next 20 seconds. Then that clinch against the cage gave him way too much time to recover.

I imagine that they'll want to save Good vs Hieron for the finals. I'd guess that we'll see Hieron vs Weedman and Good vs Hawn

 not this crap again ..

If Hornbuckle was in control, why couldn't he get up? Sure looked like he was trying to .. oh, it must of been because of the guy on top of him .. that was controlling him.

Seriously, we all understand your argument .. but it still runs into the problem I listed .. if you're on the bottom of someone and can't get up, despite trying .. you're are in no way in control. So he went for submissions? Did he get them? no.. how is that different from your takedown argument? if blocking takedowns earns you points, then so should blocking submissions .. and Weedman was on top the whole time, controlled wrists or not.. and blocked all of Hornbuckle's submissions. Hornbuckle might have been controlling Weedman's wrists, but Weedman was controlling the rest of Hornbuckle's body.

PMBR
March 6th, 2011, 3:28 PM
What is the difference in being on top and trying to get a kimura and being on bottom, working for a triangle? In both cases, the guy attempting a submission is in control and the guy fighting off the submission is looking for an escape. If you can't see that, then you are blind.

Keep in mind that a person looking for a triangle WANTS to be on bottom because he has the potential to end the fight from that position. Being on top does not make you in control.

Dubya
March 6th, 2011, 7:06 PM
It does if the person underneath you is trying to get out from underneath you and they can't.. because they have no control over the situation and are stuck there.

Fuck you. fuck me. agree to disagree.

PMBR
March 7th, 2011, 10:08 AM
They aren't trying to get up. They are trying to finish the fight from their current position. THAT is why they are in control.

Also... how is the guy on top "in control" if he is in danger of losing at the given moment?

Torn
March 7th, 2011, 11:16 AM
If he's effectively defending all the submission attempts then he isn't in danger of losing at the given moment.

Define effectively. If you effectively defend ANYTHING from ANY position then you aren't in danger of losing at the given moment. Right?

Torn
March 7th, 2011, 11:24 AM
Well link it with what dub is saying. The person on top is controlling where there fight is the entire time unless a submission is locked in, and if the person on top shrugs off the attempt then the person on the bottom a) hasn't been successful in what he's trying to do and b) not in control. So he's either given up position to try and submit someone, and failed, enabling his opponent to land more powerful strikes, or is stuck there because he can't get up, both of which mean the person on bottom isn't winning.

I understand what you are saying mate and I think being active from the bottom should get more credit but not to the extent you are saying.

PMBR
March 7th, 2011, 11:33 AM
This will be my last point on the subject because I don't really want to beat a dead horse. The reason I put so much emphasis on the guy on bottom attempting submissions is this:

Guy on bottom - threatening to finish, working to finish
Guy on top - in danger, fighting to survive

A common misconception that you and dub seem to be believing is that you are stuck in guard after the submission attempt is over. A lot of guys fighting out of a triangle attempt choose to simply stand up (ex. Fukuda) or lose their position in a post-submission scramble (ex. Weedman).

Dubya
March 7th, 2011, 1:32 PM
No, no .. we get that. What we're trying to say is that just because he's going for submissions shouldn't earn him points unless one is actually locked in or something because again .. you can go for 20 superman punches, trying to end a fight, but if you don't land any of them .. who cares? If the guy on top just shrugs off the submissions, then the guy on bottom hasn't really accomplished anything.. in fact, he's actually failed at something.

PMBR
March 7th, 2011, 1:57 PM
See, you are definitely belittling the amount of effort needed to avoid these submissions. If it takes you more than 15 seconds to get out of a submission, that's not shrugging it off. You are fighting to escape. You're making it sound like their avoiding these submissions the same way Overeem avoiding the Brett Rogers takedown.

Dubya
March 7th, 2011, 2:05 PM
Yeah, but you're making it seem like they should be given more credit for failing at something than the person on top, who is keeping them from doing what they want to do.. and 9/10 times working some GnP.. huge strikes or not.. weak strikes that land (usually repeatedly) > failed submissions ..

PMBR
March 7th, 2011, 2:08 PM
Hell, I think threatening and failing at a submission is more impressive than failing at a takedown. Then again ask Randy Couture how successful his failed takedowns were on the scorecards against Brandon Vera.

Also, THE PERSON ON TOP IS NOT STOPPING THEM FROM DOING WHAT THEY WANT! If they are threatening with a submission, they are doing what they want.

Dubya
March 7th, 2011, 2:24 PM
They're not doing what they want to do if they don't actually secure and get the submission.

PMBR
March 7th, 2011, 2:44 PM
If they are threatening, then they are the ones winning at that moment of the fight. If they are threatening for more than half of the ground encounter, then they won the majority of that ground encounter.

Torn
March 7th, 2011, 2:54 PM
Depends what the guy does on top, but what you just said was a nice way of putting it. If he doesn't land any strikes and sits in guard for half a round after being stuck in a guillotine for 2 and a half minutes then I'd like to see judges score that in favour of the guy on the bottom.

But if after half a round of being in a choke, the guy escapes and lands some ground and pound doing damage for half a round then that is going to be worth more than not succeeding in a choke as the end result of that was no damage.

(PMG)--Post Master Genera
March 7th, 2011, 3:18 PM
And arguably, weak ground and pound is a failed attempt at a TKO or KO. Yeah, its going to be subjective, but tight submission attempts should be counted for, almost more so than mediocre ground and pound. You are seriously restricting your opponents movements to a very narrow set of options in order to continue fighting. Also, there is sometimes considerable unapparent damage done in joint locks and guillotine chokes, even if they don't end the fight.

Again, this is martial arts, being on top of somebody on its own doesn't matter, making them go unconscious or breaking a limb does. If a fight doesn't end conclusively, I will give more credit to a fighter who was closer to finishing regardless of top or bottom position. I would mediate that by the damage incurred at the cost of being on the bottom and whether the bottom fighter would have got a submission before being too overwhelmed by top damage. (Rate/severity of damage vs. proximity of submission/frequency of good attempts)

Yeah, it sucks, but judging is always going to be artificial and 'unfair' in some way.

Would love to see Pitbull Sr. tangle with Eddie for the LW title. I'm thinking that maybe Mike Chandler could play the spoiler though, seems like a beastly athlete/wrestler/prospect.

Alvarez wasn't spectacular but very solid, totally dominated Curran for 25 minutes. I actually like the 'new' Alvarez that picks opponents apart instead of getting dragged into slugfests all the time. That has been his only weakness earlier, being too reckless and eager to finish, almost cost him against both Dida and Crusher, and especially Nick Thompson.

What's up with Bellator and those flying knee KO's, inverted triangle subs and bloodbaths?

It's kinda crazy to think that he's done as well as he has and hasn't actually been training full-time .. being a coach, espescially a college coach, is a full-time job in itself .. the kid's been getting by purely on his wrestling talent. He's got some good subs and great sub defense, but its the fact that no one can touch him on the ground that has won him so many fights .. going somewhere like Roufusport will really help him come along nicely in the sport.

I HATE that line of thinking. It implies that Galvao gained his advantages based on the weight cut, and not his actual skill level. He almost finished the fight at the very beginning, so Warren hadn't had a chance to get tired yet.

There's pretty much no other reason. No doubt that Galvao was taking it to him and that added to it for sure, but it just remined me of Kampmann/Shields when yeah, Kampmann was definitely taking it to him and giving him a reason to be tired, but you could just tell how tired the guy was anyway .. thats how it came across to me.

Ahh I see .. I thought it was a qualifier. Even so, I think Saunders is a lock for the tourney and I bet they find someone else to fight with Horny.

Not sure I liked the Hieron/Hawn decision.

Yeah, I definitely thought Hawn won the fight 29-28.

I gotta say that Jay Hieron has really (by no fault of his own) made himself look seriously mediocre in this tournament. He got a ridiculous NON-submission in the first round .. he just tells the ref that the guy is out and the ref belives him like WTF .. the guy was obviously NOT asleep. Horrible .. NOW this .. really not as impressed as I'd hoped to be. Huge props to Rick Hawn. He, on the other hand.. has emerged as a serious WW prospect in this tournament.

How bout freakin' Chase Beebe???

Bellator is in some dangerous waters right now. EARNING a title shot is a huge thing for them. Expanding on what dubya said, let's look at some of these welterweight tournament fighters who have advanced.

Jay Hieron misinforms referee Josh Rosenthall about his opponents state of consciousness Semi-finalist

Brent Weedman def. Dan Hornbuckle via split decision that sent the crowd into a boo-fest. Semi-finalist

Jay Hieron def. Brent Weedman via unanimous decision that is considered controversial. Finalist

Rick Hawn def. Lyman Good via split decision that is also considered controversial. Finalist

Jay Hieron def Rick Hawn via split decision that is considered controversial. TOURNAMENT CHAMPION

In a tournament that consists of 7 fights, there were 4 controversial decisions rendered and 1 bad call.

So essentially, both finalists made it there via bad decision and then the champion was crowned with a bad decision. I hope Hieron gets rinsed in his title shot or else things might not be so good for Bellator.

Yeah, but in reality .. the 3 fights in the middle weren't really controversial at all. I think people just wanted the other guy to win or something because I thought Weedman beat Hornbuckle .. I thought Hieron beat Weedman .. Good/Hawn was a really, really close fight .. could've gone either way on that one, to be fair .. However, the first fight .. that guy was definitely not asleep .. and Hieron/Hawn was a bit close, but I think Hawn won pretty soundly.

Good night of fights tonight. Main event was solid and the middleweight fight had a nice knockout.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Sam Alvey does next Saturday. His gym is in the same city I live in.

Bellator got their season-high for ratings with Bellator 44 .. 325,000 viewers. This is where they need to really start promoting. Promote the shit out of all the events that don't have to compete with UFC/Strikeforce.

It's rare that you see a guy really pick great shots like that, he leathered him with 3 or 4 absolute belters amongst those standard gnp shots.

Plus he looks like a G.I Joe action figure.

Bellator will only be doing one even per month over the summer and each show will be each round of a new featherweight tournament.

Round 1 - June 25th - Bellator 46
Round 2 - July 23rd - Bellator 47
Round 3 - August 27th - Bellator 48

I imagine they pick back up in September because the next confirmed event is Bellator 52 in October.

The featherweight tournament bracket and match-ups for Bellator 46:

Genair da Silva vs. Marlon Sandro
Ronnie Mann vs. Adam Schindler
Pat Curran vs. Luis Palomino
Jacob Devree vs. Nazareno Malegarie

I didn't catch the date, but Bjorn Rebney just said that Ricco Rodriguez will be fighting Seth Petruzelli on a later Bellator show.

I'm not sorry for Seth, Ricco actually has natural talent despite his "hard earned" athletic physique...
Losing all that weight gave him some mad McCorkle tits.

Ricco will decision him or sub him early.

Kinda hard to understand what Ricco went through but given recent interviews his status with the UFC sort of explains his immense weight gain and almost lacklustre attitude.

At least he's back in the mix now, winning ways always come back.
