Apparently Juve have the option of buying Aquilani for £13.1m at the end of his loan. What an insanely stupid move from Liverpool. :wtf:

Yep, ridiculous. If he has a good season, it's an absolute steal, and almost as bad a deal as the one to bring Keane to Anfield. If he has a bad season, he trudges back to us, we accept that he's never going to step up, and end up selling him for about 8 million to Udinese or someone

Indeed.

We did start the season, of course, by commiting at least £3m to pay Rafa off at a time when Inter were willing to pay us at least £3m for him. I guess the Aquilani deal is a bit of an improvement on that stroke of genius.

Fun times.

August 25th, 2010, 5:28 PM
Aquilani has never had a full season as far as I am aware. He's very injury prone, I guess Liverpool may have had problems with him there and have decided to cut whatever losses possible. It's a pity because he is a quality player. He wasn't used properly by Liverpool last season when he did play, he should be played high up the pitch.

Andy
August 25th, 2010, 5:35 PM
I'm suprised Hodgson didn't even bother seeing what he could get out of him. He would've been quality cover for Gerrard/Cole at the very least. Now they're left with Lucas as cover for that position.

El Capitano Gatisto
August 25th, 2010, 5:44 PM
Someone was telling me that they'd heard Liverpool felt Aquilani's injury issues were as much psychological as physical and thus he was never likely to settle into the Premier League. Don't remember where this person heard it so could be complete bollocks.

Andy
August 25th, 2010, 5:46 PM
I'm sure someone's posted that on this forum before. Possible I suppose.

On a slightly related note, Tomas Rosicky has made an absolutely superb start to the season. If he's finally over his injury problems, he will be a very important player for us this season.

So it looks like Ben Arfa is coming in on loan. If he plays 25 games then it will trigger the clause that we will buy him.

A few reports in the papers linking us with Robbie Keane on loan. We wouldn't pay all of his wages so I don't know what would happen there.

If we could get these two in then our squad would be complete.

They've been linked as well but Marseille's president has said our offer has been accepted

"He will travel to Newcastle tomorrow," Dassier said. "They have offered to raise the price for the option to buy if Hatem plays 25 matches and also pay the 5% of the cost to FIFA. We will respond. After that, it's up to Hatem to agree a deal. We have to finish this story as soon as possible."

There's 0% chance that we would pay a substantial fee or all of his wages.

Looks like we've hit a stumbling block.

Lovenkrands was one of our better performers a couple of years ago and he's useful coming of the bench and as back up so I'm not too fussed about Keane.

Ben Arfa on the other hand should hopefully be a class signing if he can live up to his potential with us.

Liverpool have moved quickly to replace Javier Mascherano by agreeing a £10.7m package with Porto tonight for the Portugal international Raul Meireles.

Could well be a speculative run as it isn't being reported by many other semi-reputable sources. It's certainly come out of the blue (particularly if the Meireles to Everton/Chelsea rumours had once been accurate).

Rather chuffed with the prospect though.

Mierles almost done according to the Echo, happy days. at least he'll pop up with a few goals unlike Cuntier Tosserano.

Konchesky will do for a budget signing, not excited about the signing or anything but he's hardly terrible. Fulham are a good team nowadays. Hodgson left them in the best shape they've ever been in as seen VS Man United last week and the Uefa final last year. if he thinks Konchesky is worth 4m and will improve the squad i trust him.

Wilson to Stoke for £2.5m plus Kitson and Lawrence still looks on the cards, assuming we can agree terms with them both. That would be an amazing deal for us. Wilson isn't particularly good whilst Kitson and Lawrence would both be very good additions at Championship level. Only problem is I'm not sure why either would want to come, and you'd think their wage demands would be a bit higher than our reported £10,000 per week limit.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on Wilson. He's quite tidy in possession. As a holding midfielder he might do OK. But as a centre-half he's shite. Not quick, not strong, not good in the air, positionally suspect. But of course that didn't stop Paul Hart playing him there for four months.

Nugent to Blackpool is also a possibility, and hopefully Utaka to anywhere. They are both bollocks. £13m well spent 'Arry. But I'm sure Sandra got a nice new kitchen out of it.

The feeling our end is Lawrence may be what's holding things up - apparently he's not too keen on the idea. I'm sure Kitson can't wait to leave as he's had numerous run-ins with Pulis. It would be a great deal for you - Kitson is clearly a decent player despite how things have turned out for him with us and Lawrence was brilliant for us in the Championship, I'd rather we kept him as he'd still be a useful squad member for us

I've been suprised by all the positive comments from Portsmouth fans about Wilson since we've been linked with him having seen what you've said about him in the past. If he's better as a midfielder that would suit us though as it's the weakest part of our squad. We really don't need another centre back

Yep I would have thought Lawrence and Kitson could get better deals elsewhere at clubs that aren't in turmoil. But if we get them both and a couple of decent loan deals we might be OK this season. Sonko and Dickinson have so far proved absolute disasters so defensive reinforcements are much needed. In Lawrence, Mullins, Brown, Smith, Kitson and Nugent, with Kanu coming on, we'd have a decent midfield and forward line at least. At that level of course.

Our fans' general feeling regarding Wilson is certainly mixed. He was well out of his depth last season at centre-back like I said, but he did put in some decent performances towards the end of the season in midfield. I'm sure that is where Pulis sees him playing. I can't see him being interested in centre-backs who can't head the ball. He can pick a pass and looks pretty assured when given space, but his lack of pace and physical strength will always be a hindrance wherever he plays. He's not a good enough player to make up for it. He gave away a goal on Saturday by losing possession whilst under pressure. He doesn't like opposition players being within ten yards of him, basically.

I think it is a mistake from Pulis in all honesty, but I hope he does well as he seems like a decent lad.

Hopefully this means you'll come in for Utaka tomorrow. We're practically giving him away and there was speculation of interest from Bruce earlier in the summer. I think his only good performances in the past couple of years have come against you. Bruce might have been fooled into thinking he wasn't abysmal.

Dramatic movement in odds for these things often doesn't mean anything. Sven was odds-on favourite to be our manager after Tony Adams and nothing was ever going to happen there. I would be absolutely shocked if Moyes went to Villa.

Me too. The bookies havent had a clue about our job at any stage of proceedings. Sven and Bradley bounced about a bit based purely on advertising their own interest and KMac has been up there at a steady 4-7's. They're latching onto the only hint of anything they can get.

I put 30 quid on Klinnsmann at 55 to 1 a while back then laid him at 9's the other day. So making a bit regardless, I'll be gutted if it's Jurgen now though.

Much as I love Randy's ethics and integrity.... surely he's not THAT ethical.

Maybe he didn't want to risk a chance that Everton might lodge a complaint it may have resulted in points being docked.

Maybe he heard something in the boardroom yesterday that Moyes wasn't happy about something and then thought now was his chance.

I no longer have any belief Tony Adams could be a good manager. I still find it hard to believe that a guy who was such a good captain and leader of men can do such a shit job motivating and coaching players. I know management is more then that but i'd have thought he'd have picked something up along the way. But his track record now suggests otherwise.

I now apologise to UK Blue for actually defending Tony Adams when he used to slate him. Sorry mate.

Fabiano is one of the best strikers in the world and by all accounts he wanted to come, Sevilla just kept moving the goalposts. By all accounts Marseille were in for him too. That would've been a sideways step of equal proportions to Spurs, so if he had wanted to go he wouldn't have signed a new contract. If it's true Sevilla were moving the goalposts then surely he would be annoyed with them for not allowing a move he wanted to go through and not sign a new contract.

He is the poor man's Nani. Which isn't as much of a criticism as it was a year ago, but he's still pretty poor. He's got ability but he's so predictable it's unreal. When he's motivated, which is almost never. Owen always scores when he plays, but he's always injured. "When he's motivated" isn't a caveat you can just ignore - he's 26 years old and still has the same problem, and has shown no desire to change (for example immediately saying he would leave the moment he was asked if he was worried about not getting a game ahead of Balotelli). Best ones I've heard today are:

Robbie Keane to Notts Forest on loan.

We'll be lucky to get Robbie Savage at this rate.

I'd rather have Adebayor than Fabiano. Heavily dependent on Adebayor being arsed, in saying that.

I think you'll find everyone had the right hump when we sold Kanoute, he was great. An absolute lazy bastard but seemed to score ridonkulous goals every week. And about a year after we sold him the cunt went and put us out of the UEFA Cup at the semi-final stage. Sevilla were class then, with him and Fabiano up front, Poulsen fouling everyone in midfield and Dani Alves whizzing around everywhere like a nutter.

Kanoute was more often shit than good for Spurs, he was basically the Adebayor prototype - arsed for maybe 1 game in 5. His scoring record was fairly poor too.

Adebayor is better than both, it's his attitude which counts against him. So Andy is correct and, for once, doesn't deserve to be beaten like a disappointing child for his opinion here.

That's not why we had the hump... we had the hump because we sold him and didn't replace him.

But even then, it's clear the move did Kanoute some good. Much like it did for Forlan. It's not really a case of hindsight being 20/20 even if he wasn't brilliant for us and we were all sick of him by time we sold him.

Simon
August 31st, 2010, 10:57 AM
Yes but as I said before the attitude isn't a caveat that you can just dismiss. He could be the best player in the world but if he wanders around the pitch doing nothing 90% of the time then what good is he? The Kanoute-Adebayor comparison is a fair one but you have to remember that we were absolutely shit then, so a talented but lazy player would be accommodated.

See Berbatov for example, he looked great for us because even when he stood around picking his arse for 80 minutes he'd still be our best player and would receive less abuse than Jenas who ran around for 90 minutes without anyone really noticing. Then he joins United where everyone is just as talented as him but also works very hard, and his attitude sticks out like a sore thumb.

The Rosk

Ruud Gullit, Shearer, Henry and Roy Keane made up the rest of it. Performances where they simply dominated the shit out of the Villa players around them. This was when Gullit was 87 years old, too.

Got to say that Stoke should be pulling in the female fans this season with Kenwyne and Eidur up front. I'd be hard pushed to think of any other team with such an attractive strike partnership.
