Below are news sites, community sites, gaming help sites and deals sites that I and other posters have found useful. If you know of any other video game related sites that you wish to share post in this thread and I'll add it to the main post.

News/Reviews Sites

IGN (http://www.ign.com) - Reviews, previews, editorials, podcasts and guides for every game and system, but prepare to be annoyed by adverts unless you subscribe (or use Adblock).

Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com) - Similar to IGN, worth checking out both

Kotaku (http://www.kotaku.com) - A 'blog' style site which focuses mainly on breaking news stories. Kotaku avoids the 'pre release hype' style content, focusing instead on editorials on video games that are already out. News stories are frequently reported here first.

Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net) - A large gaming website that is specifically European centric, their 'Digital Foundry' sub site is fantastic for technical analysis of games (i.e. performance, resolution, etc)

Polygon (www.polygon.com) - Another large site with a very opinionated staff, they often report news that the other sites don't like to cover (i.e. controversial topics)

Destructoid (http://www.destructoid.com) - A well laid out gaming website featuring excellent reviews, up to date news and a very opinionated staff. One of my favourites.

Giant Bomb (http://www.giantbomb.com) - Uniquely styled website featuring news and reviews but mostly focuses on video content. Boasts the largest editable video game database on the internet so if you're looking for information this is a good place to start.

Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/game) - Loved by some, loathed by others this is a review aggregator that gives each game a score out of 100 based on reviews from every major publication and website. A useful resource but you shouldn't take the number as the only indicator - read the reviews to find out more.

'Indie'/Community Sites

Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/) - Anyone who streams Let's Plays usually does so on Twitch - watch other people play video games if that's your sort of thing.

YouTube Gaming (https://gaming.youtube.com/) - YouTube's take on video game streaming to compete with Twitch.

NeoGAF (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/index.php) - the largest video game forum on the internet, fantastic place to discuss and debate video game culture. News stories and rumours are often reported here first as there are several industry insiders who post.

Kinda Funny (http://www.kindafunny.com/) - Four guys who left IGN to go off on their own, they release video content every day and several podcasts.

Easy Allies (https://www.patreon.com/EasyAllies?ty=h) - Most of the staff from GameTrailers formed Easy Allies after the GT closure.

The Jimquisition (http://www.thejimquisition.com/) - Jim Sterling who used to be a editor at Destructoid now runs his own site on The Jimqusition. Features reviews, podcasts and video content.

Game Help

GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com) - Has just about everything you'll ever need when it comes to cheats, strategies, etc for all platforms new and old.

Xbox Achievements (http://www.xboxachievements.org) - A list of every achievement in every game, including several unreleased titles, and strategy guides to achieve them. This site also features news and reviews for XB1/360 games and the community is continually growing.

PlayStation Trophies (http://www.playstationtrophies.org) - Sister site of XA and therefore has the same features in relation to PS4/PS3/PSV trophies.

IGN Wikis (http://uk.ign.com/wikis) - IGN's guides are all editable by the community so they are among the best on the internet

Deals and Discounts

Cheap Ass Gamer (http://www.cheapassgamer.com) - As the name implies this is a place to find cheap prices for video games. Other features include a search feature for finding the cheapest price for specific games, competitions, email alerts, and a growing and active community.

Hot UK Deals (http://www.hotukdeals.com/gaming/deals/hot) - (UK Only) A deal site that isn't just for video games but often includes them. Users find deals and post them up here.

Frugal Gaming (http://www.frugalgaming.co.uk) - (UK Only) Another site that keeps track of the latest deals, you can filter deals by price which is sometimes useful if you only have a certain budget.

Postabargain (http://www.postabargain.co.uk/) - (UK Only) May be the best UK centric video game deals website, worth checking out

I just went to ToysRus. they are having a buy 2 get one on all video games, and video game accessories. I wish I would have seen this before grabbing Uncharted 2. Being this is bill week for me, and an expensive date that didn't pan out I am near broke. I was still able to walk away with a couple of Nintendo DS games. The sale expires tonight. Just a FYI for those of you who can take advantage.

I originally went in to find a b-day gift for a relative. I ended up getting three DS games for myself, and forgot about his gift altogether. :$

UK PS3 owners - get Uncharted 2 at www.zavvi.com for just £34.95 (not bad for a brand new best selling game) by using the code ZWalk. Also note that Zavvi offer 3.5% cashback through Quidco for anyone who uses that bringing the price down to £33.72.

The E.A. store is having a Black Friday sale on direct download PC games. Around 30% off. I picked up SimCity Societies last night for $14. Most PC games are around the $14-29 mark with a few games as low as $7. The sale is going on now until Friday.

That's all the PS3 Slim deals on HotUKDeals, couldn't see any for £200 but there's a fair few that are good value depending on how much you want to spend and whether you want games bundled in.

slim is the newer model. It's thinner. Don't think there's any technology difference aside from hard-drive

Cubed-Sphere
November 25th, 2009, 6:02 AM
The only functionality difference worth mentioning is that the Slim won't allow you to use other Operating Systems, like Linux and such. But you're likely not into that sort of thing, anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

To anyone looking to buy a load of microsoft points The Hut are selling 2100 point cards for 14.93 but if you buy three of them use discount code CLEAR4 for £3.99 off so it comes to £13.60 each! (RRP is £17.50 I think)

OK I just bought an external HD and I was able to format it to FAT32. Its a 500 GB hard drive but for some reason it says I have used 338 GB of space and I only have 126 of space free but the thing is empty. I havent put anything on the HD so what gives? When the HD is in NTFS I get around 465 gigs of available space but I need the HD to be formatted to FAT32 so my PS3 will recognize it but in doing so I will lose over 300 gigs of space leaving me with just around 120 gigs to use. Is there anyway I can format my HD to FAT32 and still have all my HD space? I really dont want to have to take this thing back to Walmart.

You could partition it into several 126 partitions but something tells me that the PS3 wont work with it in that way

Edit just done some research, and some people have had luck getting larger partitions using a program to format it called swissknife. Dont know if it really works though.

I play Football Manager through Steam, I dont have the disc as i've downloaded it off steam itself.

Everytime I go to open Steam, it comes up with the error message 'Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again'.

I'm 100% online according to my air-port. I've tried the basic install-uninstall and got no where. I'm running on Mac OS.

Not sales or anything, but I was at Sam's Club the other day and saw they had Uncharted 2 for $35, Bioshock 2 for $25, Final Fantasy 13 (for 360) for $30, Darksiders for $25 among others. Seemed like really good deals and as I normally don't look there for games, I figured I'd point it out to any of us in the US who might be interested.

Atty
September 12th, 2010, 11:37 PM
Amazon just dropped Final Fantasy 13 to $19.99 in the US. They tend to fluctuate their prices by the day, so I figured I'd give a heads up. Looks like only the PS3 version dropped in price, as the 360 one is still 33, so it'll probably not be at that price long.

No UK bargains posted in here in a while so let me refresh this thread by calling attention to the best deal I've seen so far on the new Xbox 360 S 250GB model.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/images/smilies/gameicons/xbox360.gif Xbox 360 Slim 250 GB HDD with Fifa 11 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280567749700#ht_1608wt_942) - £179.99

Excellent deal for anyone who was considering getting one, even if you aren't interested in Fifa you could trade it in for quite a lot since it's a brand new game.

PLEASE NOTE this deal is for today only so if you're interested snap this up as soon as you can, they may sell out and even if they don't the price goes back to normal tomorrow.

*EDIT*
None left! Understandably it was only a flash sale so while I doubt anyone benefited from this I thought I'd share it anyway just in case.

I got Fallout New Vegas for 40 dollars. I could have gotten Spliner Cell Conviction for 20 but I passed on it. :(

I know this isnt video game related but I figure since most of you own HDTV's, what do you think of these two products.

The first one I bought on sale at Office Depot for 219.99 but they have this wierd return policy that says I have only 14 days and if its open I cant get a cash refund but instead I can exchange it for another item of equal or lesser value.

The second one I bought at Best Buy for 189.99 but it didnt come with an HDMI so I had to get one which I did. Their return policy is better in that I can open it, try it out and I have until Jan 31, 2011 to return it and get a full cash refund w/o any restocking fees the store is known for. So which brand should I go with?

It's definitely in store, and it's one of the better sales I've seen anywhere. I picked up Borderlands: GOTY, and Fallout: New Vegas for $19.99 each.

Ok I got a question. I bought a 500 GB Western Digital portable hard drive and I used some program that allowed me to format the hard drive to Fat32 without losing to much data. Well after following the instructions I was able to format the hard drive to FAT32 so I went to hook it up to my PS3 and it wouldnt read it. I already have a 250 gig hard drive from the same brand and its formated in Fat32 but I used another method and it was a year ago and I dont remember exactly what I did. Can anyone help?

I'm curious about the online community like for the following games (if there is any?), because even before EA officially announced the cut-off, the demo from Army Of Two was absolutely dead whereas it's pretty easy to find a partner on AOT: 40th Day Demo. Don’t want to be in a situation where I get a game and find out no-one’s playing it. Some of these might be single player, ignore those ones.

XBOX 360:
Tekken 6
Army Of Two: The 40th Day
Dead Space
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (Comp)
Battlefield Bad Company
Battlefield: BC 2
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Left 4 Dead
The Club
Halo 3
Halo ODST
Halo Reach
F.E.A.R.
Crysis 2
Farcry 2
Call Of Duty 4: MW
Call Of Duty: MW 2
The Orange Box
Red Dead Redemption
Fable II
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
Gears Of War 2

PS3:
Uncharted
Resistance
Resistance 2
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
God Of War III

I posted it here , since it seems less dead than the other thread.

In the "Find a Bargain" category...

Best Buy Gamer's Club Unlocked is fantastic. For $15 a year, you get a magazine with some pretty amazing coupons. Just this month alone, you get coupons that make SSX $20 (may be $10 in a couple weeks), Resistance 3 $10, Dragon Age II $5, and several other good ones. In the past, I've gotten Arkham City for $10 and the FFXIII-2 CE for $15. It's paid for itself many times already just in the last two months.

I wasn't sure where to put this so everyone could see it but I have a 10% discount code for Zavvi and another for The Hut that I'm not going to use, someone may as well claim them. They're one time use only code so if you claim one post here to let everyone else know. Zavvi/The Hut (they're the same group so they have similar prices) do some pretty good deals on games so you may be able to snag a bargain:

I need help. A few days ago I accidentaly dropped my 250 gb Western Digital portable hard drive on the floor and at first I thought nothing of it until I tried to use it and now all my files are shot to hell. I did some research and found out that losing files can happen if the hard drive is dropped so now I am pissed. Is there anyway I can recover my files or am I just screwed?

The Rogerer
October 3rd, 2012, 5:09 AM
You can pay for hard drive recovery but it's not guaranteed and can be extremely expensive, and is only usually worth doing for businesses who need critical information, etc.

You could always open up the outer case and see if you can identify anything on the outside that may have broken, but if it's damage to the actual drive mechanics you're screwed.

Any interest in reviving the "bargains" aspect of this thread or possibly spinning it off into its own thread? An idea I had was the first post could be constantly updated with the deals on Xbox Live, PSN, Steam's weekend deals and Nintendo's eShop. If there's enough interest we could also include major iOS and Android sales?

It could go along with the recent site relaunch and might attract a few more people into the VG forums as all the deal info would be in one place. There could also be a lot of discussion around whether certain discounted games are worth a punt or whether they should be avoided etc. What I would need at minimum would be assistance with the US PSN deals and the Steam deals as I do not watch these and I couldn't possibly handle it all myself.

Anyone interested?

Here (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=325044) is an example of an active discussion thread centred around weekly deals on Xbox Live, which I contribute to. Ours would be platform agnostic and therefore better. :)

I just a bought a second PS3 today, I've came home and by the looks of it it won't let me sign in using my PSN username. It keeps saying "You cannot sign-in using another user's sign-in ID (ie email address). I'm the master user of my son's PS3 in the other room, any way round this as I don't want to create a new PSN account and have to replay COD's and GTA's again? What if I switched the PS3 in my son's room and gave him the "new" one, would he be able to sign into his username?

The Rogerer
February 25th, 2014, 6:18 PM
are you sure you're using the right email address? You maybe need to create a new user - as in scroll right to the left of the menu, and create a new user there. It's not very obvious but you need one of those per account. It shouldn't be a problem though, I have two PS3s with the same hree accounts on both of them. You can create 100s of users on the PS3, but then you tie one to a particular PSN account, try that out.

I'm giving away more steam keys:

Updated the main post for the first time in about 5 years - if anyone has any other sites they'd like added please let me know.

Could a mod please change the thread title to what I've edited it to? Having a very old date makes it look abandoned.

Are there any reputable sites for downloading old old games for the PC? I'm pretty sure the last time I tried to download an Amiga game I got a virus... got a hankering for playing a few old classics on my laptop on the commute.

How old?

The Software Library archive is a great place although I can't remember if you can download them.

e.g. here's all your MSDOS classics. https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_msdos_games
