Just caught the pilot of this show the other night and I have to say it might have been the funniest pilot I've ever seen.
I don't know how many of you guys actually have this show available as its just starting the states but if you get a chance, give it a watch.
I'd call it a mix of The Office/Arrested Development in terms of how the show is presented/humor.
Like I said, probably the funniest pilot I've ever seen.
For those in the states, the show runs on Wednesday nights on ABC at 9 p.m.

I just watched the pilot on ABC.com and it's really funny. Ty Burrell is funny and of course Ed O'Neill is Ed O'Neill. Sofia Vergara... mmmmmmmmmmmm.
"I gave her my heart and she gave me a picture of me as an old time sheriff"
and The Lion King thing when they are introducing the baby was great too. I have DVR'ed the series now.

I agree. The gay son sub-plot was a great part of the show.
Plus Ed O Neil's relationship skills were left intact....thank god!@

Really, the best part to me was when they scheduled a time to shoot the kid.

That was great. The highlight was definitely the Lion King music coming on, perfect timing...but the whole show was packed with big laughs and there seem to be some likeable characters. The "cream puff" gag was just about the most obvious thing ever though.

How did I miss this thread? Hey, we're only two episodes in, but I love it already. I have a soft spot for Ed O'Neill because, well, Married With Children was fucking amazing.
This show is nothing like that, but it is smart, funny and well casted. Even the kids act pretty good. I really hope the writing stays funny and the show has some long term success.
I actually thought this week's was funnier than last week's.

I noticed this on the guide today and decided to TiVo tonight's episode.
Ed O'Neil earned the show one thumbs up just in the first five minutes. The gay guys got the other two (am I the only one who thinks it's weird that TiVo ratings go up to three thumbs up? I mean, three stars or two thumbs up would make more sense...but that really has nothing to do with this, so nevermind) before the episode was half over.
The gay guys and Ed O'Neil were amazing. The guy dealing with his wife, son, and hot neighbor was pretty predictable, and I'm less excited about those characters.
I ordered TiVo to record it every week, and I'll probably check out the first episode tomorrow online.

3 and a half months later and I feel the same way... it just keeps getting funnier and now that the characters have had a few episodes to develop, its just amazing. This show is fantastic. As much as I have greater affection for The Office as it has grown over the years, at the moment this has to rival Better Off Ted as the funniest American show going. The only minor criticism I would have of it is that the kid who plays Phil's son is the worst actor in the world.
And it annoys me slightly that they use someone who looks so young to play the part of his eldest daughter - I know that this is partly the point with regards to her relationship with the older guy, but seeing her take her driving test when she only looks maybe 13 or 14 takes away from the suspension of disbelief a little.
Those are minor, almost irrelevant criticisms though. Phil is the latest in a long line of fantastic buffoons - similar to Michael Scott, but different enough to not feel like a rip-off. The two mothers are great, Jay is great, Cam is fantastic and Phil's younger daughter is brilliant too. It's hard not to get irritated by Manny although I'm sure that's the point.
The Lion King reveal in the first episode was the most I'd laughed in ages when it happened. Fantastic timing, and followed by the "turn it off"/"I can't, it's who I am" exchange, brilliant.

Yea the eldest daugher is 19 in real life.
For me this is the funniest show on TV at the moment, partly because The Office is having a down season. And while realism definitely isn't important for sitcom, while we're on the subject my two qualms about the show are that a) Gloria wouldn't be with someone nearly 30 years older than her unless she really is a gold digger and b) the kids - actually not all of them, just Manny and the youngest daughter with glasses - talk like adults.

If Better Off Ted gets cancelled I will be sad. Great little show.
Modern Family is brilliant too. I only download 5 American shows a week at the moment (House, The Office, Scrubs, Cougar Town (:ashamed:) and Modern Family. I always watch Modern Family last cos I know I'm going to enjoy it most.
All the characters are fantastic, I think. I actually disagree with Simon and think that the youngest kid is not that bad an actor. I quite like him.
I also cannot decide who is nicer out of Gloria or Claire.

Manny speaking like an adult is hilarious, I think, especially when it clashes with Jay or he goes to the bar to pour a glass of juice or something. I'm surprised that's a qualm, since that's one of the "sitcomy", smart things about the show. If it irritates you, it irritates you, I just find it odd you'd mention that since that's one of the many things that make Modern Family what it is.
And actually, you'd be surprised at how kids talk these days. I'm amazed, really, at how intellectual some of them seem.
Also, Gloria being with Jay... its not directly implied she's a gold digger, but that's certainly left up for interpretation.

Gloria is ridiculously sexy. Claire is just lovely and nice and very sexy but not quite AS sexy. I would have to say both. They are both nicer.

Cougar Town is pretty good I reckon. It doesn't take itself too seriously at all which is nice. Its actually got a developing storyline too (which is similar to the Ted/Andrea Anders one in BoT).
It also has as you say Courtney Cox in not a lot of clothes, whilst also having Jordan from Scrubs (who I want to fuck really hard but I'm not sure why) and this little minx too. http://www.exposay.com/celebrity-photos/busy-phillips-blades-of-glory-los-angeles-premiere-1wDKKF.jpg

This show hit its stride in season one, which is pretty rare I think. Most sitcoms need time to find out what works and aren't that great right off the bat (see: The Office, Always Sunny, Seinfeld). This one feels like it's been in its prime since day 1.

Is anyone still watching this? Truly amazed at this sitcom, not a single bland episode yet, quality is one of the most consistent for a comedy I've seen. It picked some awards this year too.
Anyone who hasn't seen this show yet, I strongly advise you to start with the first episode and work your way up. I really wish this show was an hourlong comedy each week.

This is an amazingly good show on the other hand. The only episode that I have felt let down by was the IPad episode. A big advert for IPads basically but I understand that downloading has meant they look for ways of securing their advert revenue so fair enough

Lily growing up so quickly reminds me of Boy Meets World, when Morgan aged like 4 years over one season and no real explanation was given. Don't really mind it though, it gives them some new places to go with Cam & Mitchell.
