What is the Cape Fear one?

Cape Feare?

That is awesome.

It's the one where they are put into the witness protection program on the boat because Sideshow Bob is given parole. Sideshow Bob straps himself to the bottom of the car and tries to kill Bart on the boat one night but Bart says his last wish is for him to sing a sailor song (I forget which) and Bob takes too long and the boat shores in Springfield and he gets arrested.

EDIT: cheeky edit there.

Its also the one where the guys are trying to get Homer to understand that he's actually now Mr. Thompson.

What is the Cape Fear one?

Cape Feare?

That is awesome.
It's the one where SS Bob treads on about 10 rakes that smack him in the face on their boat. I normally like sophisticated humour but a cartton villan getting rakes in the face is hilarious. (edit: this has already been answered, I didn't read the thread).

My favourite is the X Files one.

Whats that called?

It's foolish to try and list a top 10 Simpsons episodes

So here's my top 10...

10: Lisa's Substitute
9: Lemon Of Troy
8: Bart Carny
7: Treehouse Of Horror V (The Shinning, Time And Punishment, Nightmare Cafeteria)
6: Homer The Great
5: Homer Goes To College
4: Marge vs The Monorail
3: The Springfield Files (X-Files parody)
2: Das Bus (Lord of the Flies parody)
1: You Only Move Twice

Surprised Das Bus hasn't been mentioned yet, love that one.

Cape Feare's also the one with the cactus patch, "No one who speaks German can be a bad man", and the elephants.

The X-files one is called The Springfield Files.

EDIT - It's going to take me a while to cut it down to 10 - there's a hell of a lot of great episodes.

Here's what my top ten would probably be. But it's kind of off the top of my head and things may get shuffled before I make a top 25.

10. Cape Feare
9. Much Apu About Nothing
8. The Itchy & Scratchy & Pootchie Show
7. Lisa The Vegetarian
6. Three Men And A Comic Book
5. Trash of the Titans
4. Bart The General
3. Last Exit to Springfield
2. I Love Lisa
1. Sideshow Bob Roberts

Bob running for Mayor has been my favorite since I first saw it. Afterall, Dad can't afford six dollars a night...

[EDIT]Somehow forgot "You Only Move Twice." So many great ones...

I'll get around to this, but I think all of my favorites are between Season 4 and Season 9.

This was hard, like really, really hard.

1. You Only Move Twice
2. Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment
3. Homer the Great
4. Marge vs. the Monorail
5. Cape Feare
6. Homer at the Bat
7. Mr. Plow
8. Itchy and Scratchyland
9. The Joy of Sect
10. Brother from the Same Planet

That could change depending on my mood. The top three are pretty much tied but I figured a tie would be a pain in the ass for Simmo.

The top 6 are all pretty even really, they’re all the first one’s that come to my mind in this discussion. I could easily have filled a top 25 and still had problems eliminating some of the better episodes.

It was hard to eliminate the Team Homer, Flaming Moe’s, Simpson Tide and Homer’s Quintet episodes in particular.

Edit: Shit I totally missed Brother from the Same Planet... I'm putting that in instead of the Clown College, barely.

This was bloody hard...

10 Sideshow Bob Roberts
- "You can't handle the truth. No truth- handler, you. Bah! I deride your truth- handling abilities."

9 Bart of Darkness
Automated phone: Hello, and welcome to the Springfield Police Department "Rescue Phone"! If you know the name of the felony being committed, press one. To choose from a list of felonies, press two. If you are being murdered, or are calling from a rotary phone, please stay on the line.
[Bart presses four numbers on the phone]
Automated phone: You have selected "regicide!" If you know the name of the King or Queen being murdered, press one.
[Bart hangs up]

8 Much Apu About Nothing
Marge: What you're saying is so understandable. And really, your only crime was violating U.S. law.

7 Cape Fearer
Lisa: It's from my pen pal, Anya!
[As Lisa reads, the letter writer's voice can be heard in voice over.]
Anya: "Dear Lisa - as I write this, I am very sad. Our president has been overthrown and...
Gruff male voice: ...replaced by the benevolent General Krull. All hail Krull and his glorious new regime! Sincerely, Little Girl."

6 Homer vs the 18th Ammendment
Rex Banner: You're out there somewhere, Beer Baron, and I'll find you.
Homer: [Faintly, as from a long way away] No, you won't!
Rex Banner: Yes, I will!
Homer: [Faintly] Won't!

5 Trilogy of Error
Wiggum: [answering phone] 9-1-1. This'd better be good.
Marge: I just cut off my husband's thumb!
Wiggum: ATTEMPTED MURDER?! YOU'LL BURN FOR THIS! BURN IN JAIL!
Marge: It was an accident!
Wiggum: Yeah, yeah. Save it for "Dateline: Tuesday." Uh, what's your address so I can come arrest you?
Marge: Arrest me? Um, my address, it's um, 1-2-3 ... Fake Street.
Wiggum: [writing address down] 1-2-3 Fake Street. Okay see you soon!
Ned: [reading] Harry Potter, and all his wizard friends, went straight to Hell for practicing witchcraft.
Todd: Yay! [Ned throws the book into the burning fireplace]

4 Who Shot Mr Burns (Part One)
Superintendent Chalmers: Why is it when I heard the word "school" and the word "exploded," I immediately thought of the word "SKINNER"?!
Homer: Here's your package, Mr. Burns.
Mr. Burns: My name is the return address, you senseless dunderpate! Smithers, who is this nincompoop?
Homer's brain: Oh, I've worked here for ten years and my boss doesn't even know my name. Well that's gonna change right now!
Homer: My name is Homer J. Simp--
[Burns pushes a red button; a 1000g (therefore tiny) weight falls on Homer's head.]
Homer: Ow! -- son.
Mr. Burns: [inspecting the weight] Hmm, sounded large when I ordered it. [sighs] I can't make hide nor hair of these metric booby traps.

3 Brother from Another Series
[Cecil has locked Bob, Bart and Lisa in the dam and leaves to blow it up.]
Lisa: Oh, it's hopeless! Utterly, utterly hopeless!
Sideshow Bob: Oh, I see. When it's one of my schemes, you can't foil it fast enough. But when Cecil tries to kill you, "It's hopeless! Utterly, utterly hopeless!"

2 The Boy Who Knew Too Much
"Oh my god, someone took a bite out of the big rice krispie square. Oh, and the waiter's been brutally beaten."

1 Homer Heretic
"We interrupt this current affairs programme to bring you...a football match."

I've changed my mind, I'm not gonna do this because its just too hard. I just looked back over the first two seasons and I couldn't really separate any of them. All that happened was I came over ridiculously nostalgic and started thinking back to when I was a kid and how I used to collect Simpsons videos (the days before they started bringing out seasons on DVD's).

I  The Simpsons.

Though I think this is a good idea, and I'm sure people will be able to pull off a list of 25, I'm thinking as a side thing, maybe we can have a top 5 list from each season. Then from each season's favorite, narrow it to a list ranking those favorites?

10. The City Of New York vs. Homer Simpson

"22 Short Films About Springfield" is easily my all-time favorite episode, but it's only because I saw enough other episodes to appreciate the characters being recontextualized. For instance, the Skinner/Chalmers dynamic is always hilarious, but in the domestic setting it's even funnier.

I don't typically like Lisa-centric episodes, but "'Round Springfield" is the perfect balance of sweetness and left-field humor.

I'm going to attempt to do a top 20 or 25 soon but first I figured this was the perfect place for my mini-rant. The Simpsons is still quite genius. It seems to me that most people saw a decline early in the show's second decade and then some irrational phenomenon occurred where everyone agreed it sucked, and would continue to suck until the day it went off the air.

Frankly, I'm as critical of the series as anyone, I'm not a blind fanboy. I see that episodes in seasons 12-16 were pretty dire, with only a handful of bright spots per season. However, in the last 4 years it's really picked back up and frankly season 20 was darn-tootin' goo-diddily-ood. If you liked the show past season 5 and then grew tired of it at the turn of the century or so, the newest seasons are surprisingly watchable, but if you're one of those that only like the first four seasons then you're probably never going to get anything like that again. I personally find that the series hit its stride around seasons 3 and 4 and kept going strong through season 9 with seasons 10 and 11 being solid in their own right. I'm glad to say I've enjoyed the show again recently and I hope it continues.

Best part of that episode is the advert for the Bigger Brothers thing...

*Little boy's standing over a grave*

*Boy nods looking sad*
Voiceover: And he's never coming back.
Boy: He might...
Voiceover: No, he's not.

Or something, classic anyway.

I fucking love The Simpsons and own, in my humble opinion, the 3 best seasons on DVD: 4,5 and 6. My favourite episodes are probably all from those 3 seasons, with stand-outs being: Marge Vs The Monorail, Cape Feare, Homer Badman, Homer's Barbershop Quartet, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, Burns' Heir, Homie The Clown, A Star Is Burns...fucking hell, so many good episodes.

The strongest episode is probably Cape Feare, it's just laugh after laugh, and I still piss myself laughing when I watch it for the billionth time.

I used to think season 4 was the strongest, but now I'm not sure. It's defo one of those 3 though.

This thread inspired me to watch Burns' Heir earlier and I've decided that it's one of the best ever.

When I first saw that episode, I used to think he was saying "yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum."

That was a fun episode, loved the Terminator spoof with Skinner stalking Bart walking into the river and out the other side. And "I am not a clumsy Clousea-esque waiter!" then the waiter falls into the rat traps.

Another good Terminator 2 sppof in "Homer Loves Flanders" when he chases Flanders' car with the golf clubs.

OK, starting later today....

- There will be 3 polls per season, with each poll drawn randomly.
- Going to start with Season 20 and work backwards.
- For seasons 1 and 13-20, the top of each poll will go through.
- For seasons 2 to 12, the top two will go through.
- A wildcard round will be held for episodes that barely miss the cut

- From there, every episode will be drawn randomly into groups of 6 and the top 2 will go through.
- For the last 32 episodes, straight-up knockout.

For the first round, I'm going to open up 3 polls (one whole season) at once and leave them for 48 hours (maybe less for the first few).

Questions for the powers-that-be: can I edit poll choices within the same thread once a poll has closed? Will folks be ok with 3 new threads for this poll (keep this one for general discussion)?

You can edit the choice names, but people can't vote again. So, one poll and it's kicked. I'm fine with you making a bunch of threads, by the way.

If I started at 1, interest would have dropped off altogether by the time I got to 17 or so.

Alternate them. Like do 1 & 2, then 19. Then pick up with 3 & 18, 4 & 17, 5 & 16 and so forth. It gets to what people are interested quickly, maintains some order and, in my opinion, is a much better and more effective way to go.

Treehouse of Horror IV is probably the best Hallowe'en one, and it sits up well to any other of the episodes from the time.

"Dear Homer, I. O. U. one emergency donut. Signed, Homer."
Bastard! He's always one step ahead.
-- Homer, not realizing his own foresight, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Homer: [ruefully] I'd sell my soul for a donut.
[The devil appears, looking like Flanders]
Flanders: Heh heh, that can be arranged.
Homer: What -- Flanders! You're the devil?
Flanders: Ho ho, it's always the one you least suspect.
-- All those wasted years of church, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Burns: Hmm...who's that goat-legged fellow? I like the cut of his
jib.
Smithers: Er, Prince of Darkness, sir. He's your eleven o'clock.
-- The next installment on the billion, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Flanders: I simply ask for what is mine!
[He sits down smugly]
Hutz: [cocky] That was a right-pretty speech, sir. But I ask you,
what is a contract? Webster's defines it as "an agreement
under the law which is unbreakable." [emphasizing] Which is
unbreakable!
[The jury look at him]
Excuse me, I must use the restroom.
-- An expert law-talking guy, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Skinner: Now I've gotten word that a child is using his imagination...
and I've come to put a stop to it!
Bart: [desperate] No, no, it's true, there's a monster on the bus!
Skinner: The only monster on this bus is a lack of proper respect for
the rules.
-- Seymour's adages, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Skinner: Pull, Willy, pull!
Willy: I'm doing all the pulling, you blouse-wearing poodle walker!
-- Fitting epithets, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Brockman: Another local peasant has been found dead -- drained of his
blood with two teeth marks on his throat. This black cape was
found on the scene.
[Cape has "DRACULA" written on it]
Police are baffled.
Wiggum: We think we're dealing with a supernatural being, most likely
a mummy. As a precaution, I've ordered the Egyptian wing of
the Springfield museum destroyed.
-- Taking no chances, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Burns: [over the intercom] Welcome, come in. Ah, fresh victims for
my ever-growing army of the undead --
Smithers: Sir, you have to let go of that button.
Burns: Well, son of a bitch --
-- Vampires and technology don't mix, "Treehouse of Horror IV"

Homer: Ooh, punch!
Lisa: [sniffs it] Ew! Dad, this is blood!
Homer: Correction -- _free_ blood.

Homer, we've got to do something. Today, he's drinking people's blood.
Tomorrow, he could be smoking!

Kill my boss? Do I dare live out the American Dream?

And then there's the Vampire book, the Super fun happy slide, the contract, the Jury of the Damned, and even though the middle part is the weakest, it's still a damn good Twilight Zone pastiche.

If only I had my Season Five boxset in the flat as opposed to at mums, I'd watch that episode right now.

Season 17 has got to be the shittest season there is.

I reckon the problem they had from about season 11 onwards is they didn't know how to end an episode. Some of the final 90 seconds of some episodes are just bizarre unfunny shit.

Another problem is the formula seemed to go from random-event-in-random-setting-leads-to-wacky-scenario to just random-event-to-random-event-repeat. No real plot as such.

I've only voted once or twice since I'm not always around at the moment but I'm keeping tabs on the vote. I'm fairly sure You Only Move Twice will win, and it certainly deserves to be right up there in contention, but it will become increasingly interesting as the field gets narrower. I'm really curious how quickly the later seasons and season one die off. Just about every memorable moment and quote I see is from season 2-9 or so, if I recall correctly. Does anyone have really fond memories of episodes or moments from the later years?

I think things have certainly picked up since the movie, though. They finally remembered Homer is an idiot, not an asshole, and learned to stop ending each episode with a bizarre non-sequitor or a random song in the last 90 seconds. I'm actually seeing plots and themes returning, which is lovely. I understand it's hard to find something new to say after 500-odd episodes, but for a long time it really felt like the stories were basically mad-libs strung together with scenes of Homer being obnoxiously stupid.

Soon, the next big question: Favourite Simpsons character? And does anybody like Marge?

Season 10 was the best of them all imho. It had such classics as:

"Homer to the Max"
"Thirty Minutes over Tokyo"
"Viva Ned Flanders"
"Mayored to the Mob" (Luke, be a Jedi tonight)
"Marge Simpson in: 'Screaming Yellow Honkers'" (Canyonero)

"The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace" (Thomas Edison)

I'd say the prime of the series was 4-11. (Tomacco was in 11)

I had a feeling I was off a bit, they were always shown so randomly over here I have very little sense of which season is which, I just know the ballpark area of where things went down hill.

Marge has her moments.

A better question is "Does anybody like Lisa?"

I like Lisa. She can be very annoying but she at least has purpose in balancing the family dynamic and there have been a few good Lisa episodes (like the one where she channelled Eva Peron). Marge just seems to be there because the family needs a mother, and her neuroses are a lot more annoying than they are funny. She has very little character of her own beyond nagging and repressing.

Yeah, I knew what you were getting at, but still wanted to point out how great season 10 was. To actually answer your question though, yeah, there are a lot of good episodes and moments in later seasons, but they definitely got fewer and further between as time went on.

Season 13 ("Homer the Moe"):

Bart is digging a hole in the backyard for no reason.

Lisa warns Bart that he'll dig his way to China, but Bart is sanguine about the possibility. At that moment, Chinese soldiers are using a satellite to spy on the Simpsons' yard.

Spy: Those inscrutable Americans. What are they up to now?
Humungous: I will stop them. I am strong. I am the great Humungous.
General: We all know you're the great Humungous.
Humungous: Well, I'm just saying.
General: Oh, you always just saying!
Moe: [voice over] Homer, is this story going anywhere?
[cut to Moe's Tavern. Homer, Lenny, and Carl are seated at the bar]
Homer: Yes. Eventually, I become king of the Morlocks.
Carl: But Morlocks are from the future.
Homer: You calling me a liar?
Moe: Wait a minute, Homer. If it's true, what about all the stuff you weren't around for?
Lenny: Yeah. How'd you know the Chinese were spying on you?
Homer: Oh, I just naturally assumed.
Moe: That is the stupidest story I ever heard, and I read the entire "Sweet Valley High" series.

Classic.

Ironically that's rather how Simpsons stories became over time. The Poochy episode was remarkably fore-sighted. I suppose there were always good moments though, even as the episodes got more ropey, it's just there's so much and I see them so randomly I find it hard to distinguish or remember a lot of the time. You're right about Season 10, though, that's a lot of classic episodes in one place.

Yeah, while I'm not really a fan of Lisa, she does at least have her moments; moreso than Marge, anyway. I've never been a fan of Marge, and can probably count the number of episodes that she's made me laugh on one hand.

Marge and Lisa are each great, essential characters and the show would suck without them. They usually play the straight man to Homer and Bart, and do so perfectly, but also frequently provide their own laughs.

It's not like Marge nags every single show anyway, sometimes she lets loose and makes mistakes like everyone else, like her night out with Ruth Powers and when she becomes addicted to gambling.

I disagree that Marge is essential. Lisa is sophisticated and confident enough to stand on her own as the family's moral and sensible compass, and she has no problems telling Homer he's an idiot as much as she does Bart. Marge, on the other hand, never seems to do anything but complain or randomly select to be as irrational as Homer. She doesn't seem to actually be capable of arguing her position like Lisa can, she just groans and moans a lot, alternating between passively accepting Homer's shit and blowing up on him.

It's not like Marge nags every single show anyway, sometimes she lets loose and makes mistakes like everyone else, like her night out with Ruth Powers and when she becomes addicted to gambling.

I found Marge's addiction to gambling to be pretty boring, to be honest (though it may be because I have seen that episode a hundred times). She doesn't have that idiotic charm that gets Homer a free pass whenever he gets sucked into anything. And I really do think she nags in 99% of the episodes. Seriously.

This does sound all very negative but I'm not trying to say she's a terrible character. I don't think she's entirely necessary to the show but the everyday family dynamic would be a bit odd without a mother, and she does have a role to play in the larger community. I just don't like her or find her funny, myself.

And does anybody like Marge?
I do enjoy the occasions where they show that she's a wee bit crazy. The nagging and getting mad stuff gets old, but the occasional times that they show she's a bit OCD or doesn't have a solid grip on much outside of her own home are quite amusing.
I can't pull any quotes out off the top of my head, unfortunate, other than "Who gives a gibble? Gabba gabba hey!"
Oh, also when she makes Bart and Lisa wigs after they get bad haircuts and asks if they still think she's crazy for keeping their trimmings "Now to get these back in the freezer!"

6, 3. Easy vote for Bart of Darkness, one of the best Hitchcock piss takes ever.

6, 2 Homie the Clown, Homer the Great, Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part 1), Two Dozen and One Greyhounds, The PTA Disbands. You are clearly an evil person. Homie the Clown gets my vote because it'll probably get forgotten. Very strong lineup though.

5, 2. Everyone will go for Cape Feare, so I've gone for Boy Scoutz in the Hood with the ironic dolphins to give it a shot for 2nd place.

Lisa: It's just a stupid rock.
Homer: Uh-huh.

Season 8 Poll 2 is insane. The fact that 3 of the following 5 episodes won't make it out of the first round is absurd. At least 3 of these are among the top 10 episodes ever. Save them, Simmo!

Homer's Phobia

You Only Move Twice

Hurricane Neddy

Homer vs the Eighteenth Amendment

Homer's Enemy
Yeah the whole "randomised picks" thing annoyed me with this one :( However if there's a tie for 2nd there's the wildcard round :chin:

I voted for Team Homer in the first one, had some good stuff like the Steretypes bowling team and Mr Burns drilling Hans Moleman's brain mistaking him for a leprichaun trying to get his lucky charms.

Season 8 Poll 2 was the hardest, torn between Homer's Enemy and You Only Move Twice. You Only Move Twice just edged it, but if I had another vote then Homer's Enemy would get it.

He actually says "Cypress Hill, I'm looking at you".

Insane in the Brain does sound brilliant with an orchestra as well.

Drederick Tatum is out for revenge: ON HOMER SIMPSON!

Tatum: I am going to make orphans of his children.
Brockman (I think): He does have a wife, you know.
Tatum: Yes, but I believe that she would die of grief.

The Trouble With Trillions needs more love.

"Marge how many kids do we have? I'll put nine. Bart, Lisa, Maggie is seven people."
"Homer you know we don't have...."
"Shut up shut up shut up if I don't hear you it's not illegal!"

*drives up to red traffic lights*

"If I don't see it it's not illegal."

Or when Burns tries to scold him with the water. So many good scenes.

Marge! How many kids do we have? Oh, no time to count, I'll just estimate! Uh... nine!

....

OK, Marge, if anyone asks, you require twenty four hour nursing care, Lisa's a clergyman, Maggie is seven people, and Bart was wounded in Vietnam!

Also when Moe psyches up Homer before the fight:
Moe: I'm not going to lie to you Homer. There's a good chance you can win tonight, but you gotta visualize how you gonna beat him.
Homer: Gotcha.

I'd like to point out how excellent the food critic episode is.

Bart: Check it out Dad, you can print out the headline from the day you were born.
Homer: Ooh, pointless nostalgia!
[keys in his birth date. A paper appears showing a Homer-like baby with the headline, "Unusually Large, Ugly Baby Born"]

Tour guide: Each paper contains a certain percent of recycled paper.
Lisa: And what percent is that?
Tour guide: Zero. Zero's a percent!

Editor: Not bad, not bad at all! We're going to run this on page one! ... of section H-2.
Homer: Whoo-hoo! Stop the presses!
[Man hits stop button, wreaking havoc in the plant]

You may be right. But I can remember being 11 or 12 years old, watching the likes of Maximum Homerdrive and Homer To The Max and thinking that something has gone horribly wrong. I've seen them since and my opinion has admittedly changed a bit. Maybe I was just comparing it to the greatness of the previous seasons, but you have to admit that the quality had dropped. When Fro says 10 was his favourite season I think WHAT?

Simmo Fortyone
July 30th, 2009, 11:02 AM
Yeah going through each episode I felt that 9 was the last solid season. 10, 11 and 12 had their moments. I think that from 10 onwards there have been no sentimental (for want of a better word) episodes like Mother Simpson or And Maggie Makes Three. It all seemed to evolve into Homer et al being in stupid situations.

Absolutely. Can't fault them for that. I'd still take a poorer episode of The Simpsons over an episode of The Hills or whatever dross passes for television today.

Also can't find it on Youtube at the moment, but this bit is great:

Police Chief: "McBain! That cannon of yours is not regulation size!"
McBain: "But how do you expect me to avenge my partner with this tiny pea-shooter!"
Police Chief: "In my department we do things by the book!"
(McBain shoots book in Police Chief's hand, blowing a hole in the wall) "Bye book!"

All in favor, say die!

[Homer and Mel are mooning the studio execs speeding towards them in a car]
Mel: Will you please tell me the rest of the plan?
Homer: It was your plan, from "Braveheart." Your army mooned the enemy until they could take no more and surrendered.
Gibson: No they didn't! They attacked us in a horribly bloody battle. Remember?

Lost Our Lisa is my favorite from there. Such a strong episode throughout. With of course the Homer classic "I'm not normally a praying man, but if you're up there... Please save me Superman!"

and one that always gets me, when Lisa is talking on the phone with Homer, trying to convince him to let her take a bus

Homer: Museum? I don't like the sound of that... what did your mother say?
Lisa: Umm, I wasn't one hundred percent clear on that. She said something, but she was kind of in a rush to get Bart to the emergency room.
Homer: Hmmm, so you wanna take the bus eh?

 complete lack of interest in his son being rushed to the hospital

Badger
August 6th, 2009, 1:57 PM
Homer was golden in that episode, I always laugh when he gets stuck in the drawbridge with all the cars running over his head and in the next scene there's a big tyre tread mark on his head.

Drawbridge Guy: "You said to crush him right?"
Lisa: "NO!"

When he rushes into the museum frantically searching for Lisa he walks out with a load of souvenirs.

Also when Lisa's waiting for the bus, Moe getting into the taxi for the VD clinic, and Comic Book Guy saying Lisa can get his seat "If you can answers these questions three! Question the first!"
