Game Informer subscribers are in for a real treat this month. We’re proud to bring you the world-exclusive first look at Batman: Arkham Asylum from Rocksteady Studios and co-publishers Eidos and WBIE. This completely original title explores Gotham City’s darkest location, the infamous Arkham Asylum. But as a routine prison transfer goes wrong, the Joker sets his demented plan into action and Batman comes face to face with an army of his worst enemies. In a dark and gritty setting reminiscent of Bioshock (with a story co-written by Paul Dini), Arkham Asylum is setting the stage for a true-to-character Batman game.

So I guess this is the thing that Gary Oldman said he did some voice work for?
Right now I'm placing Lego Batman and Robin a bit higher due to how much I loved Lego Star Wars. But this could be decent. I just hear Bioshock and I get bored to tears.

He's always been big, not THAT big but big. Personally I think he looks incredible. The game from what Game Informer says is an over the shoulder view, looks similar to RE4, but the combat doesn't appear to be that way.
I'm the first person to say stay away from games based on a franchise that sells itself but uh. . .this looks REALLY cool. And the Predator fighting style has me excited (and at at the same time I know it won't work.)

Some news:
“Need to take my temperature? I’d be happy to drop my pants!”
The Joker is happy. Way too happy for a man whose latest scheme has just been foiled. As Batman: Arkham Asylum begins, the Batman has captured the Clown Prince of Crime, and has whisked him back to Gotham City’s notorious loony bin. The orderlies tie the Joker to a stretcher, and we’re treated to an extraordinary display of security measures as the credits scroll.
Even though Batman’s job is done, he chooses to follow his arch-enemy through numerous gates and guard posts, right into the bowels of the sprawling art deco facility. The Joker taunts and cackles all the while. Something isn’t quite right. A helpless prisoner shouldn’t be so cocky.
Only he isn’t helpless — and scant minutes into the game he is no longer a prisoner. With the help of crooked asylum personnel, and his loyal hench-wench Harley Quinn, the Joker has staged a mass break-out. But it gets worse. Due to overcrowding at Gotham’s Blackgate prison, dozens of everyday criminals were being housed at Arkham. To show their appreciation to the Joker for bailing them out, they’ve started wearing fright make-up and hunting for the Batman in packs. It’s as thought the Insane Clown Posse have formed their own army of the night — a disturbing thought indeed.
Yes, the lunatics are running the asylum; and the Batman has walked straight into a trap.
Allow us to introduce Batman: Arkham Asylum. We were utterly absorbed, and we think you will be too. This is sizing up to be the best Batman game ever made. Not just for the combat, which is fluid, intuitive, and brutal. Not just for the gadgets and gizmos in the Caped Crusader’s Utility Belt. Not just for the rich detail, and daring design work. They’re all great, but the most promising aspect of all is the rogue’s gallery: the villains.
One of the key reasons that Batman is the best superhero in the world is that his villains are awesome — and they’re all completely bonkers. As good as the movies are, they usually only show one or two baddies per film. But Arkham Asylum will have stacks of them; already confirmed are Killer Croc, Mr. Zsasz, Bane, The Riddler, and of course Harley and Joker. There have also been strong hints we’ll get to tussle with other Batman baddies like Poison Ivy, Two-Face, The Scarecrow and Scarface (that ventriloquist with a split personality who thinks his dummy is a gangster).
And just so we’re clear, this isn’t the happy-and-gay criminal set from the ’60s Batman. Arkham Asylum is dark — really dark. If anything, it’s darker than Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. There is blood, murder, and despair, but also comic book excess. Killer Croc, for instance, isn’t just a guy with scaly skin. He’s a 12-foot-tall mutant freak, with teeth like razors and cold, reptilian eyes. Sure, he’s in chains when you first meet him. But he knows he’ll soon be loose: “I’ve got your scent, Bats!”
This third/first-person action adventure draws from many sources: the cartoons, the movies, and plenty of other games — the architecture is something right out of BioShock. Yet for continuity and content, Arkham Aslyum is closest to the comics. Batman doesn’t have the generic black riot gear from The Dark Knight, but rather his conventional dark grey tights (augmented, admittedly, by some protective padding — you can even see the rivets that hold it together).
Throughout the game he’s in constant radio contact with Oracle — that’s what the original Batgirl is calling herself these days. After the Joker put her in a wheelchair in the ’80s, she’s become the resident tech support expert for Gotham’s crime-fighters. In this case, she performs a vital function: exposition. With a steady trickle of story-related info-tidbits dribbling through the speakers, navigating torturous jumping puzzles feels less like a chore, and more like a crucial mission objective.
The Unreal Engine 3 makes the super-slick visuals possible, but it has its limitations. Zoom the map out all the way, and you’ll see that Arkham is a sprawling complex of buildings and courtyards — it’s enormous. But on foot, you’ll notice that it’s broken down into zones separated by bulky metal security doors that open very, very slowly. This little memory juggling trick is reminiscent of the interminable lift rides in Mass Effect. Fortunately, this little trick isn’t overt enough to break the illusion.
Combat is brutal and hectic, but ultimately pretty straightforward. You’ll press X to attack and Y to stun (with a twirl of your cape), and the left stick will steer you through the fray. Bonuses start to kick in once you chain three or more attacks in a row, so it makes sense to get right into the middle of any group of aggressors, flailing about until the job is done. As a reward, the defeat of the last of a squad of goons is marked by a Take Down — a slow-motion close up of Batman bringing his Bat-Fist down on a villain’s head.
While most encounters are straight-up street-level brawls, some are set in vast enclosures full of crannies and nooks. The idea is to jump around on gargoyles and climb through floor ducts, picking off the baddies one by one. After each takedown you then retreat from their field of vision, and listen with satisfaction to the mounting panic of the survivors.
One element the game borrows from the movies is Batman’s new smart material cape that doubles as a hang-glider. This in turn makes the Glide Kick possible, an extremely satisfying form of takedown. Simply spy a hood from your perch, and tap B to execute. After gliding into position, the camera swings around for a side-on, slow motion view of Batman’s Bat Boot connecting with the villain’s head. It’s... beautiful.
Batman should write a polite thank-you letter to Arkham’s architects for placing so many gargoyles indoors. Another move he can perform from these protruding stone sentries is to hang suspended, upside down, his cape defying gravity to furl around him like folded wings. To simply hang there, like on Michael Keaton’s sleeping rig in the 1989 Batman. From this position you can snatch hoodlums as they patrol below, tie them up, and leave them for their horrified mates to discover. Rocksteady has definitely taken the whole ‘Bat’ thing to heart and Arkham Asylum has got the shadowy stealth combat angle sewn up.
Oh, and they’ve also borrowed from Predator; Batman has half a dozen enhanced vision modes. For instance, once you unlock the X-Ray view, you’ll have a handy means of seeing which enemies have which weapons, and prioritising your attacks accordingly. Yet most of them are forensics tools — Rocksteady has remembered that Batman is a detective. A tap of the left bumper brings up Investigation Mode, along with context-sensitive hints for navigation and unraveling environmental puzzles. At one point your path is blocked by an ornamental glass floor, while four storeys above hangs a huge metal chandelier. If your Bat-brain can’t handle that kind of riddle, Investigation Mode will suggest that the rope holding the light fitting in place could be cut easily with a Batarang.
As for clue hunting, Batman’s cyber-cowl will choose the relevant scan mode (physical, chromato, darklight, luminol, etc) automatically. One early challenge puts you on the trail of a drunk asylum guard; you find him by literally following the alcohol molecules in the air. It’s just one more feature that makes you feel like the ultimate crime-fighting bad-ass.
Batman’s got a modest selection of his Bat-Gadgets at his disposal, and the D-Pad lets you quickly select the right one for the job. One surprising inclusion is an unlimited supply of explosive foam. Simply ooze it all over a weak section of wall, roof, or floor, stand back, and hit the detonator: blammo. The screen shudders, and an improvised entrance is born.
His unlimited supply of Bat-Grappling-Ropes come in two flavours: a Tenchu-style ninja rope for reaching high ledges, and a Bat-Claw for pulling on distant objects. The latter is great for pulling goons off of guard towers. The unlimited supply of Batarangs also includes two varieties, though we don’t know anything about the second. Hopefully, they’ll explode.
It may seem at first a trifle unrealistic for none of his gizmos to ever run out. Yet if they did, then this would be a game more about smashing Bat-Crates than actually being Batman. Rocksteady made the right decision.
In case it’s not obvious from the screenshots, it should be made clear that the atmosphere is excellent. The outdoor areas are huge, and Arkham’s hodge-podge of building styles makes the creaking, multi-layered complex a joy to explore. This practice is not necessary to fully enjoy the story, but it is necessary if you want to hunt down every last arbitrary collectible item.
It’s also worth mentioning that things have been sexed-up. As part of her new gothic makeover, Harley Quinn has traded her jester tights for a corset and short skirt combo. What does that mean in practical terms? Upskirt shots! We’ve got our fingers crossed that if Poison Ivy pops up she’ll have dispensed with all but the flimsiest set of plant-undies.
There’s also some genuinely gruesome imagery. One encounter with rampaging inmates is punctuated by ornaments hanging from the ceiling: their former guards, dangling from wires like a sicko’s puppets. You can cut them down with your Batarangs, but there’s no point — they’re already dead. The Joker also uses copious quantities of his dreaded Smilex gas (“if you’ve gotta go, go with a smile!”). The medical facilities all resemble that back-street surgery where Jack Nicholson’s Joker smashed the mirror, and the offices look like they belong in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. Arkham is not a happy place.
At this stage the game is still far from complete. Mark Hamill will reprise his role as the Joker from the animated series, but some other matters are still very much up in the air. One thing we should stress, though, is that Arkham Asylum and the oft-rumoured adaptation of The Dark Knight for consoles are not one and the same.
Yes, Rocksteady could have been more ambitious. As you explore, investigate, and brawl, you’ll wonder what might’ve been (and might still) — a Grand Theft Batman could rock so very, very hard. As things stand however, the developers have chosen to take a more modest brief, and to do it very, very well. There is a convincing illusion of freedom of movement, and vast areas you can backtrack through, but this is basically a linear story, simple and pure. You only really need to worry about the task that’s right in front of you. Usually, that’s the face of a criminal that badly needs some corrective servicing from your fists.
The real test of Arkham Asylum, for ours, will be when we start talking to the game. Every slow-motion takedown, for instance, was such a perfect vigilante moment that saying “I’m Batman” in a gravelly voice seemed entirely appropriate. The game has months left in development, but it already seems like they’ve nailed it. If Arkham Asylum makes you feel like Batman — that alone could make it one of 2009’s must-play games.

Well they stopped using the underwear trunks back in the 1989 Batman movie which was obviously 20 years ago, so I just figured the comics would of stopped at some point during the last 20 years.
Though in the Batman and Robin movie it looked like him and Robin had on silver thongs. So I'm atleast grateful that they didn't give him a thong over the suit.

well it wasn't 'they' who stopped using the trunks. DC comics always used them, never stopped. whoever designed the batsuit in the 1989 film decided to go without them, and considering each of the following three films were sequels directly attached to that film, it made sense for those to have the same kind of suit. nolan's batman is ground even more in reality, so having the trunks would be silly. the animated series, which started three years after the burton film, used the 'classic' batman look with the trunks. there's no reason for anybody to stop depicting him wearing trunks.

the gameplay is really, really fun, and quick to get a hang out. pulling off combos inside a group of thugs, blocking attacks and countering strikes as batman is unbelievably entertaining. and the graphics are great, so gritty and dank and dark. seeing holes ripped into the batsuit and cowl during a close up after dispensing of a group of henchmen adds to the overall atmosphere and is a wonderful touch.

It's not up for download yet, but there have been numerous reports saying that Gamestop and a few other stores have demo booths available. It will more than likely be put up for download soon though since it's in the publisher's best interest to promote the game.

You just gave me a boner.
i've been craving playing through it again since i got home yesterday, and was hoping it'd be up for download.
one thing i forgot to mention were the slow motion 'takedowns,' i guess you could call them. after a string of counters and strikes, usually when you're about to put down a baddie for good, everything goes slow-mo and you get a great shot of bats roundhouse kicking a guy upside the head or doing a flipping heel kick into the crown of a slumped over henchmen. completely badass. allowing the thugs to surround you and inch closer, only to spin your cape and stun a few, while lunging at the closest opponents and taking them out is so rewarding.
god damn, if the rest of the game is half as good as that silly training level...

If it turns out to be more than just a character skin then I may buy it on PS3 but as Alf points out how can challenge rooms work with two completely different characters? They would have to be designed with their two natures in mind and since this seems last minute I'm going to hold a skeptical stance on this until I find out more.

obviously once you unlock the ability to be the joker, the requirements for the level will change.
and how does this seem 'last minute?' there's still two months left before the release, and they could've been working on and planning to include this feature all along, but just decided not to blow their loads by announcing everything all at once.

Ok the last minute comment was a bit unfounded but since so little is known about it at this point you can't say for certain that the requirements will change. All that is known about this news is that Joker will be a playable character in the challenge rooms exclusively on PS3. Whether or not that turns out to be an enjoyable feature or not remains to be seen, hence my current skepticism.

This version of Bane seems generally intelligent, but completely enraged to a fault...
He's not only larger than his comic book counter part, but he's a lot angrier too. (Though it could be the dosage)

The delay is quite the pain in the rear. Having it come out in the summer would leave me some free time to sink my teeth into it for about 6 weeks. Coming out in (basically) Sept. doesn't leave me much free time to play it. Frankly, it's the only game besides Uncharted 2 that I'm looking forward to the rest of the year. Everything else I wanted in '09 is already out.
EDIT: I forgot Modern Warfare 2 and WWE 2010, but the point still stands, there's not much else coming out this year and I wish it was all spread out a little more. Now everything I want for the year is coming out within the same 3 months and I'm left with nothing of interest to play this summer.

The TNA game had the codes be a one time thing you'd enter on the dashboard. Like adding microsoft points with a card. That's why nobody was able to leak how to play as Mike Tenay.
I just saw the achievements list. Which should give away who all the bad guys are.
Looks like nobody we haven't already heard about. It mentions stuff with Riddler, Zsasz, Scarecrow, Croc, Bane, Ivy, Harley and of course, Joker. I was not really all that interested in this till the demo. I'd seen a couple of trailers and pictures of the redesigned characters which looked cool but the game itself I wasn't fussed about.
Have to say I was surprised at how much I liked the stealth part in the demo, I usually hate stealth in games, I don't find sitting in a dark corner waiting to be all that fun or compelling. In this though it was alot more interesting and fun. Combat seems nice and simple but thoroughly entertaining especially when you manage to string together a bunch of strikes and counters, looks and feels very cool.
This really has gone from am "eh I think I'll pass" to me very much considering buying it when it comes out, minus batarang most likely.
This is why I love demos, I could very easily have missed out of this.

Wow, what a demo. Incredibly short, but incredibly sweet. I loved it. Only played through it the once, but will be going back again and again over the next couple of days.
The fighting, the gliding, the stealth, all of it is amazing. I just loved swooping down and kicking someone. The graphics and voice overs are excellent, too.
The only little criticism I have is the camera view. It's a little bit on the annoying side, well it was at first. I prefer the camera view used in games like Unwanted: Drake's Fortune. At times, Batman just seems to be too dominant on the screen, but like I said it's only a small criticism. The rest of the game, based on the demo, is awesome. Got it pre-ordered already and can't wait

At first I thought the demo was quite boring as it seemed to just be press square to attack and triangle to counter but as it progressed through the level and you gained the ability to glide, stealth kill, grapple to the gargoyles and use the detective mode it all became so fluid, so perfect that I simply fell in love. I won't be getting this game at release but it is a must-buy later in the year.

It all clicks on the final room. The best part about this game will be the stalking. Loved that part.

Holding the X button on the PS3 controller makes him run, if I remember correctly. Batman is more about stealth than quick movements. His attacks and blocks are quick, but it doesn't makes sense for him to be running around all the time.
I think his build is just about right. Character models in a game like this are supposed to be a little over-exaggerated.
The swirling bats are my only gripe. Even then, they don't bother me too much. Some people (kids, I'm assuming) might need the point hammered home that the bad guy is down for good.

I didn't mean that batman looks too bulky. I mean this model fills up too much of the screen.
He moves a heck of a lot faster when crouching than when walking normally. That's just odd. And yes, I know about the running. I think his walking speed is a touch too slow.

The only thing that bugged me is how weedy The Joker is. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect him to be bulky like Batman, but he looks like Mickey Mouse could beat him in a flex-off.
The little stuff like swirling bats doesn't bother me. I do agree Batman is a bit too prominent on the screen, but it doesn't annoy me too much.

Sweet... if you hold left trigger to throw a batarang, and instead press the detective mode button to throw it... the camera follows the batarang.

Just because Batman is about stealth doesn't mean he shouldn't be running about. It makes perfect sense, in The Asylum where innocent guards are getting demolished, that he should be running about trying to stop this break out ASAP. It's not like he's out on city rooftops.
I do agree that his walking speed is a bit too slow though. If I wanted to walk all slow and stealthy I'd press softly on the analogue.
I like the fact that Batman seems huge on the screen, it makes him imposing and the character model is awesome. It's not like the camera doesn't pull back for fights and stealth, it's only that close when you're walking down corridors.
The swirling bats threw me off the first time, but I got used to it quick swiftly. I'm not a big fan of it, but it doesn't really ruin anything for me

Yea The Joker does seem quite tiny. I mean I know he's supposed to be caricature-like, but still.
Though in fairness Batman, Gordon, the guards and every enemy you face are all MASSIVE in build

I watched some of those vids... and to be honest the combat looks really repetitive. I think the stealthly planning and excecution will be fun, and the odd mass rumble... but if they rely on the combat I think it'll get boring pretty quick.
I read the game informer article and it seems the points you get unlocks new moves and such. That's a brilliant idea.

I did the thing where you hand upside down on a gargoyle then you grab a goon and leave them dangling... I did that so that every guard but one was on a gargoyle in a row. Then one by one I threw a batarang at the ropes so the bodies fell. The other dude was shitting himself... so I stalked him a bit and kept lobbing batarangs at him. Or I'd run up and punch him and run off.
I then lured him into the room and crashed through the glass to finish him off. Much fun.
I watched an IGn video, and you can knock a guy out and then cover him in the explosive foam, so when his mates come and investigate you can blow them up.

There's still so much stuff I haven't done in the demo.
I haven't crashed through that glass roof, I didn't realise that you could cut people down from Gargoyles, and what the hell is Tempest talking about?
I did get in the little duct underneath the room and thought I'd be able to take a guy from below, but sadly couldn't.

I'm strangely attracted to the Captain America one. But, out of all of those, the 3 that would rock as a DLC pack would be the Blue and Grey, Burton's Batman, and the Dark Knight outfits (if they made the Dark Knight one a little more armored-like). I also think an all-white batsuit would be ridiculous, but awesome. They should do what Metal Gear Solid 4 did and put out suit DLC that comes with specific conditions.
Like the Blue and Grey suit would create little "BAM!" and "WHAM!" comic stamps when attacks are made and perhaps make you run a tad faster (due to its cloth-like weight), the Dark Knight one could allow you take more damage, the Burton one would terrify enemies on sight, and an all-white one could be the "hardcore" difficulty suit that removes your ability to be stealthy, since you'd always be in sight.

So far so brilliant.
The demo cuts a massive, massive, chunk out of the opening section.
The riddler bits are very nicely done... I've found a 'riddler map' which shows you the rough location of the riddler secrets in your zone.
I#ve just got my foam.
It looks like there are only 20 or so upgrades. Bit disappointed with that to be honest...
The game is gorgeous and massively detailed. I just found a room with a big poster about the penguin on it (that's probably a riddler riddle, I'll have to go back through).
There's 240 riddler things, and you must get some sort of cool reward by doing all of them by the way Riddler is talking (excellent voice acting by the way)...
Fighting lots of people is mad fun. Not fought a 'boss' yet.

eh, i'd consider that mutated human thing joker unleashes to be a bit of a boss battle, considering what it took to defeat him.
oddly, apparently that thing dies from a heart attack because of what batman does with the batarangs. could that be defined as batman killing someone?

I simply ask because I watched a video of a Joker challenge map and he was shooting/beating up guards which surely isn't a requirement on the same map for Batman. Maybe it's the same map but different objectives?

Cracking game. I do with they put you in situations where there's tons of blokes more.
They could do with more predator bits too. It would have been nice if you could unlock more moves for silent take downs, and ariel take downs. Oh well..
Also, loved...
The bat plane (or whatever the fuck you'd call it) cameo. I love how he goes to all that just to get one little device delivered...
Also, can someone who has played through answer me this...
Do you get exploding batarangs? There's loads of destructable walls that are up high so I can't spray foam on them...
I've also seen clips with a tripple bat-claw thing pulling walls down so I'm guessing I've got that to pick up.

Are you supposed to do anything in there aside from see the Joker body with the TV head talking? The camera angle changed so I thought there might be something to do, but I can't find anything in there.

It plays in to the ending. You return there for the finale. Prior to that I found no purpose to it.

Just put three hours into this game and I'm having a blast. It is so fun running around as the Batman just whooping ass and saving people. Also the detective mode is ace as well.
My favorite thing in the game has to be the riddler challenges, they add so much to each section of the map. Having a bitch of a time with the one about "the two dents on the wall" I'm pretty sure I'm at the right place where there is two metal beams on the wall which both look like a angled D, but I can't figure out where to stand to look at them just right, as it keeps saying either view is obscured or too small.
Also loving the nods at all the cool little things in the batman universe they throw at you every now and then.

I like how Joker makes Batman go around breaking all of the expensive security devices meant to detain prisoners...

Lads, I finished all the Riddler challenges...
Usually I can't be bothered with all that collecting rubbish. But these were so well integrated that it was fun to do it.
If anyone needs help with a riddle, let me know...
