Crying is for pussies...

What are the 5 most beautiful songs you have ever heard?

There are only a couple of songs that really move me at any given time. Sometimes they change. I just got engaged, so here are my current ones. I would like to hear some of yours...

No Particular order

Iron & Wine - The Trapeze Swinger/Sea & The Rhythm

http://youtube.com/watch?v=xzRRVOFNiZ0&feature=related

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5H1ZgIlRr0c&feature=related

I count these 2 lovely tracks as 1, because I could probably come up with 5 songs of just their material. I posted about Promising Light in 2004. Nice that Sam Beam still makes music I still enjoy. I saw them about a month ago though, and it was a bit too latin-flavor for me. During some of the transitions I fully expected Carlos Santana to come out and solo. Some of the show was strange and bad, yet still brilliant.

Buffalo Springfield - Kind Woman

This has been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid. This may also be the greatest YouTube video ever...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=QufhXBI7Ai0

David Bowie - Space Oddity

Because no other man in blue eyeshadow does this for me...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ueUOTImKp0k&feature=related

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

I picked this because Pink Floyd had to make this list, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond is way too fucking long.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic

Jeff Buckley - Lover You Should've Come Over

Because it is both Brilliant, and an acceptable way for me to keep Bright Eyes off my list in case I read this again in 10 years.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qRcMuKWP8Fw

Honorable Mentions include:

Sam Cooke - Change is gonna come
Bright Eyes - Poison Oak, but about 6 others as well
Phil Collins - Against all Odds

 to wish you were here. Also Bright Eyes by Simon and Garfunkel, mostly because of its use in Watership Down.

The Snowman - Aled Jones

Every Rose has its thorn - POison :$

Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

Jeff Buckley is amazing. Lover You Should Have Come Over and Last Goodbye are my favourite songs.

Alf don't you reckon that some of the lines in Last Goodbye sound like they're being sung by Vic Reeves in Shooting Stars' Club Singing Round?

Brilliant though yeah.

Butch Walker - Promise.

I never thought of it like that my Welsh compadre... I'm going to give it a listen when I get home.

Promise is cheese ridden guff I'm afraid.

My top five would be:

Jeff Buckley - Lover You Should Have Come Over/The Last Goodbye

Muse - Unintended

Queen - Who Wants To Live Forever?

Phil Collins - Against All Odds

Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home

Jeff Healey- Angel Eyes ;)

Another good one is Joseph Arthur - In the Sun

Hobbit
December 26th, 2007, 7:27 PM
A Nelly Furtado mixtape compiled by Hobbit. That would be the best.

It would be amazing

- Leona Lewis doing 'Run' by Snow Patrol
- Radiohead's 'How To Disappear Completely'
- Pink Floyd's 'Mother'
- Doves - 'The Cedar Room' or even 'Caught by the River'
- Muse - 'Falling Down'

One or two had been said already so I spiced up your lives a bit, went bloody MENTAL and did some more.

As is Buckley's "Lover You Should've Come Over". In addition, the entire "Space Oddity" album is epic. Cygnet Commitee, An Occasional Dream, and Memory of a Free Festival are all standouts from that album.

Bright Eyes' "The Difference in the Shades" and "Something Vague".

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and without a doubt the most beautiful song I've ever heard that doesn't have lyrics...

Probably my favourite Folds track, still sends a little shiver up my spine every once in a while.

Moby "Love Should" is probably the most beautiful/stirring love song I've ever heard. I almost tear up every time I listen to it.
Other Moby tunes that I find stirring/beautiful are "Everloving" and "My Weakness"

Elisa's "Dancing" always gets a lump in my throat when I listen to it, too.

Have to agree with the two OLP tunes already mentioned, as well as throw out the version of "Are You Sad" off their Live album, too...always gives me chills.

Oh man, I'm a softy..

1. A Day in the Life - The Beatles

2. Rod Stewart - Maggie May

3. Blind Melon - Change

4. Bob Marley - One Love

5. The Beatles - With a Little Help From My Friends

Definitely "Trapeze Swinger" for me. "Iowa" by Dar Williams, "Naomi" by Neutral Milk Hotel, "Cotton" by the Mountain Goats. Ben Folds' cover of "Side of the Road" by Lucinda Williams is a good one too.

"Linger" by the Cranberries has always struck a chord with me.

Yeah that's right. It's one of the reasons I found "Click" to be such an emotional movie.

1.I Would Rather Fuck You - Eazy E
2.Bitches Ain't Shit - Dr.Dre
3.Bitch Please - Snoop Dogg

Forgive me if these videos are shit...crap connection and can't really check if they're good versions of these songs.

Sophie Ellis Bextor - Is It Any Wonder? :edit: urgh, that link was a terrible version of the song

Powderfinger - These Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ1-bZBlnzM)

Kate Miller Heidke - Space They Cannot Touch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoUHOxbsdMY)

Gotye - Heart's A Mess (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_CM5-gel6o)

And I couldn't pick one Paul Kelly song so here's three (couldn't find links to the other two)...
How To Make Gravy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNPaCUidUkQ&feature=related)
When I First Met Your Ma
Everything's Turning To White

Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry (This original demo version)
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VfvhDKDzue0
Album version is all very nice but it's too overproduced. This song is best when it's just Axl and the band. No Shannon Hoon, no stupid harmony...just raw magic. I'm still gutted we didn't get a proper recorded version of this song as it was originally intended but the demo is pretty good quality and it gets me every single time.

Porcupine Tree - Lazarus
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dfmOtTMa-8M
I love the piano so, so much in this song. Steve sings in such a beautiful tone that just compliments it perfectly. The whole concept of Deadwing (the album the track is from) is a topic of big debate among PT fans and the meaning of the song is somewhat ambiguous. I like that it can be interpreted in many different ways, though. You can look at what it probably is about (a man seeing a ghost etc) but you could easily apply it to many other things..

Buckethead - Too Many Humans
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=z7eQg0nqH5A
What's this? No insanely fast ridiculous shredtastic song from Buckethead? It's quite a shame that people who have minimal knowledge of him always assume that's all he's about. The guy is a fantastic composer and can get as much emotion out of a guitar as anyone. I don't care what anyone says, he's not just some guy who can shred insanely fast, he's a magical musician who can make a guitar do things that 99.9% of other guitarists wish they could.

Agalloch - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
http://rapidshare.com/files/79455508/Agalloch_-_02_-_In_The_Shadow_Of_Our_Pale_Companion.mp3.html (Isn't on Youtube so I uploaded it)
It's heavier than the other songs and quite different in style but it's still the definition of beauty for me. 15 minutes of haunting folk metal. I don't know how many times I've posted about this band and this song on here so I can't really say anything new. It's just the peak of what music should be, really. Some may dismiss the beauty of it because of the growly vocals at parts but Agalloch aren't a band for simple minded and ignorant people so that doesn't bother me. Anyone who sticks with it the entire way through will experience something that music very seldom does to you. I must have listened to this song hundreds of times in the last three years and every single time it haunts me. It's bleak, beautiful, epic, exhausting... I just love everything about it with all my heart.

Opeth - Death Whispered a Lullaby
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P2Z5A3WjsW8
Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree wrote the lyrics to this song and I only found that out a few months ago shockingly enough. Didn't surprise me in the slightest when I heard that, though, since it has his amazing craftmanship all over it. Is this Opeth's best song? Nope. Not by miles. Hell, it's not even the best on the Damnation album, probably, but it has always struck a chord with me. After hearing all their death metal stuff this was the first song of their progressive work I came into contact with. Just a totally new side to them and I love everything about it. Haunting lyrics, beautiful guitar melody and that solo live? Christ on a stick. It's alright on record but you should hear it live. Mind blowing. I had a few other choices in mind for my 5th but I don't think it would be right putting them over this. It might not be the best song of the bunch but it's the one that touches me the most.

:)

If you think that's moving, track down a copy of Darren Jessee (the drummer for Ben Folds Five and the guy who wrote that song) performing it on an acoustic guitar. It's breathtaking, like the best kind of campfire music in the world. In fact, the BFF studio version is pretty mediocre compared to the original.

His vocals are terrible. That distracts massively from the actual music. Massively.

The melody of the vocals themselves are bad and are just the same track after track. The music itself isn't bad, but nor is it good. It's pretty average actually. But the vocals are horrendous so obviously colours everything else.

Who gives a fuck when it was first about?

The music itself isn't bad. It's his voice and crappy double tracked vocals. Does my head in.

The point is that I felt very intensely about Bon Iver six months ago, but then the novelty sort-off wore off. I find myself returning to J. Tillman or Will Oldham when I'm in the mood for something along these lines more often and Bon Iver.

However, I was hard-repping the album in last year's year-end thread. http://forums.rajah.com/showpost.php?p=5378223&postcount=193

Well I heard his new single over the radio and liked it well enough before I knew who it even was. I went ahead and downloaded the album because his bandmates & producer have all worked with and written for the likes of Stevie Wonder (who is a favorite of mine). Some of the tracks are very Mayer-esque while a few of the more upbeat tunes are very soulful and funky. Very reminiscent of Stevie and some of the 70's funk.

I knew I'd be under fire for admiring a pop child but I'm here to say that the album is far from trash and it is actually better than Mayer's new disk.

Get past the stereotypes & actually listen to some of the tracks for yourself.

Yeah I'm not saying i'm proud of it and trust me a few friends have busted my chops for it. But I like the record in small doses. I have never heard a Jonas Brothers Band song nor do I think that is something I would care to hear, but his solo effort was good because he surrounded himself with classy people who can really play. Note: It's about the death of a friend. When he starts SHOUTING towards the end and the full orchestra kicks in... I lose it.

really loving this group at the moment. they supported Newton Faulkner on tour, I also love him.
A lot of his stuff gets me in the feels.

Here's his song Clouds:

Call me a fag, whatever - but I'm massively getting into Skylar Grey. Can't wait for her album to drop next week.

The new Beyonce album is so friggin good. I was gonna make a thread about it but the venn diagram of wrestling fans and Beyonce fans has a very small overlap. Awesome album though. She's an R&B/pop goddess.

Anyone else share my affinity for Lemonade?

Nothing obscure...

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. It's just nice.

Breathe Me by Sia. It doesn't help that they expertly used it for the finale of my favourite TV show and the only piece of television or film to ever make me weep. And nobody talks about how Adele stole the pianos for her Hometown Glory song.
