Nice to see Ox chip on with goals, they are getting shared around midfield nicely now. Defence looking very solid and we don't seem to panic like we used to.

Huge run of games now, good time to play United, but Liverpool twice and Bayern will be stern tests.

They are much improved though - it was exactly the kind of game we would have drawn a year or two ago. Now we seem to be able to break teams down much better than we used to.

I'm under no illusions though, still expect us to come 3rd but fa cup would be good.

I don't really understand. They're a relegation-facing team at home and these games you were drawing regularly a year or two ago? So how did you finish Top 4?

I understand that it is good to get wins that you expect but come on. Palace are wank. And the last few results have shown a slight lack of bottle at times (Southampton, even Villa when we were hammering you at the end) so with Liverpool and United coming up in the League I'd be a little concerned. Good place to be in at the moment though but Giroud has the world on his shoulders and you could see that yesterday I felt.

Stam cant make much of a case surely if we're only talking about in the premiership itself.
I think Vidic would be overstating it a bit too. To me he had 4-5 really good years.

On the topic of Premiership Centrebacks Aaron Hughes dropped out of the premiership 17 years after making debut for Newcastle. 17 fucking years. That's incredible

Simon

You're right sof it is incredible that a player as mediocre as Aaron Hughes lasted seventeen years in the Prem. Incidentally that Gareth McAuley is class, weird that it took so long for him to reach the top.

Mertesacker's dominance of Jerome and Chamakh yesterday was a bit embarrassing. I swear the only time one of them got past him was because he was having a laughing fit from the last time one of them tried to get past him.

In terms of longevity and performance I would say only Ferdinand and Hyppia come close off that list. Maybe Adams but i'm not quiet sure when he retired but he'd have had 6-7 seasons in the prem?

Paul Mcgrath at his peak is quiet possibly the best CB I've ever seen but I don't think he lasted long in the prem era.

Ah, the video of him vs Italy is so wonderfully watchable. Like a better version of that Zidane film without the heavy breathing and constant "AYI"s. Not many people win the Player of the Year trophy as a defender that didn't win the League.

He and King would have been the best defensive partnership ever if injuries weren't such a cunt.

Have a look at our results for last 2-3 seasons. Drawing against the likes of Birmingham at home because we couldnt break them down. In 2011-12 in particular, we actually beat a lot more of the larger teams (Chelsea away, Liverpool away, Spurs home) and dropped points against lesser sides.

I do think we have ground results out recently, but looking at the big games this season, only United away were we rubbish, even City away we were unfortunate in having 2 goals ruled out.

Yeah we do need another striker. Bentdner, Sanogo and Podolski do not inspire confidence which is wy its so important the midfield scores goals. Similar situation at Chelsea.

Wow - he must have been 17-18 years old when he made his debut!

Its hard, what criteria is defining? Is it time or how good someone is at their peak?

Colin Hendry was awesome for 3-4 years at Blackburn.

OK well let’s take the results against the teams below 7th last season who you played at the Emirates:

West Ham – 3 points
QPR – 3 points
WBA – 3 points
Newcastle – 3 points
Stoke – 3 points
Aston Villa – 3 points
Reading – 3 points
Norwich – 3 points
Wigan – 3 points
Fulham – 1 point
Swansea – 0 points

This season you’ve got a loss at home already to Villa and the rest you have won, so basically it’s the same as last season at home against the gash sides.

No idea as I haven't seen much of Barca this season, all I know is that City just swamp everyone they play against. It's not just the quality on the ball, it's their ridiculous chasing to win it back - as good as any of Guardiola's teams were at the high-press game that's popular now IMO.

Chelsea deserve to be ahead so far, they've contained City well and broke with good pace. Hazard has been superb, he just looks like he won't lose the ball. He's imperious right now and City can't get near him. His pace and ability make him look like he has all the time in the world, but he maybe just needs to release the ball a bit quicker at times.

City are really missing Fernandinho, Demichelis can't offer the same energy and pressing ability in midfield and looks like a potential red card waiting to happen. They obviously miss Aguero too, the movement of Dzeko doesn't come close to offering the same threat.

Unlucky with that prediction.

I cannot stand Mourinho but he got his tactics spot on last night, three in the middle dominating possession against Citys two.

That last part is debatable. He did make a dog arse of himself, but it was only once.

as for Laudrup, I'm not surprised, any time a job becomes available, he seems to be the first name on the list, and all that speculation about his long term future, coupled with a little run of poor results doesn't bode well for any manager.

Yeah Natureboy said the same i could see a case for Adams but Campbell was still pretty good in 2008 and he also started in 93. I seem to remember he wasn't that bad when he went back to Arsenal for a second spell. I think he's easily the best CB in premiership history.

I think it's Rio Ferdinand, as much of a gimp as he is. A superb modern defender, he had everything really before the injuries hit him and even after those he still had a lot of class. Tailed off badly this past couple of years but he probably could have still looked alright if United had a decent midfield that could afford him and Vidic (also badly exposed in recent years) some protection.

The Rosk

It's never going to be Adams. It's hard to judge when you have to add longevity into the mix because if you have Adams in there you have to have cunts like Terry in there I guess.

It's always surprisingly hard to look back at times before players got old and slower/shitter, but Ferdinand was an absolutely ridiculous defender back in the day. His only real fault is an almost complete lack of threat from set-pieces but aside from that he was pretty much perfect.

I think he was brilliant, but he was always reliant on pace - now he is slowing down he isn't the same. Much as I hate John Terry he has never been dependant on pace and much more on positioning like Adams before him.

The same could be said of Carragher (though he was not in the same class as above).

I think if the Premier League had started ten years before Adams would have walked it. He was in the team at 17 and captain at 21. Whats more galling is imagining how good he would have been had he not been on the booze. :(

If it's been translated literally but it depends how strong it actually is in their own Spanish context. "May your father die" might be equivalent to "you son of a bitch" etc.

I'll accept the monkey thing is horrrific, but then the Spanish seem to do that quite a lot and nothing ever seems to happen.

Paul Doyle was saying in the Guardian and on Football Weekly that if David Moyes didn't start his best front 4 against Fulham at home, then it would say a lot about his attitude to managing Manchester United. I agree with him, this is the one game he should have been trying them all to rack up a performance and a score, but he picked Young over Januzaj. This is turgid, bad football from United and Moyes really is under pressure if United don't turn this around in a big, big way. Fulham are a bad team. Watching Young and Evra pelt in shit cross after shit cross for Fulham players to head away is not really good enough with the likes of Rooney, Mata and Van Persie on the pitch.

Ringo

Not sure I can see this Fulham side maintaining organisation and holding strong for long here though. They're generally a big mess. 2-1 United by half time.

El Capitano Gatisto
February 9th, 2014, 12:37 PM
It looks easy for them so far. They will take their chances letting United cross it all day, it's percentages play for both sides and the percentages favour Fulham with the set-up they have numbers-wise in the box. Without Januzaj on, there's no one with pace in United's side or ability to go past players, so they know the cross is coming in every time and they just need to make sure they are in the right place.

How bad United's football is and has been all season is all the more striking when you see the penetrative, pacey, brilliant football Liverpool and Everton play at times, that other "young" coaches across Europe play with their teams, such as Klopp, Simeone, Conte, Guardiola etc. Moyes looks like a tactical dinosaur already. I have defended him a bit and think his Everton team were better than he has been given credit for and he always had good footballers in his side, but the way he has this team playing is really, really bad. He needs to adapt, this team shouldn't be playing such turgid stuff, as disappointing as some of the players are. It looks directionless, toothless, paceless and easy to defend against.

Evra is being looked for more than Mata. No point having a play-maker if you don't use him. Rooney is not good as a play-maker, too bad on the ball and in decision-making. This is comfortable for Fulham really. This is most definitely a sackable set of performances for Moyes if he tops off bad games against Sunderland, Stoke and Cardiff with a home loss vs. Fulham. These are bad, bad football teams.

No one else has done anything for United. Maybe he should sit around the middle losing the ball and looking disinterested like Mata has done for the whole game.

Been in Italy so missed the game but fuck me what a terrible result at Liverpool. Doesnt matter how well Liverpool played, no excuse for going 4-0 down after 18 minutes.

By all accounts Ozil was shite, will be interesting if Wenger sticks with him tomorrow night or brings in Gnabry. What is for sure is that tomorrow is a must win if we have any pretentions about a title challenge. Also, I'm glad we have Liverpool in the cup on Saturday as Flamini is back and we should be well up for it.

Arsenal are gutless cunts who are being found out, as I predicted last week, and as I predicted months beforehand. Their fans don't help being utterly soulless at almost all games and getting on their back within seconds if they aren't winning by two clear goals. I used to live next to their ground so I know exactly what it's like down there. No trophies for years = no guts.

Simon
February 11th, 2014, 7:16 AM
Ozil was absolutely shit but I don't think he deserves to be singled out. Bar Wilshere and possibly Oxlade-Chamberlain they were all terrible and gutless. Ozil was no worse than Giroud, Arteta, Cazorla, Mertesacker, Koscielnly, Sagna and Monreal. You can maybe let Chesney off because he didn't particularly drop a bollock for any of the goals. Wilshere and AOC didn't play well either but they at least had the decency to look annoyed about what was happening. Mertesacker's defending some of the goals was appallingly lazy - Sterling's first and Sturridge's in particular. Just jogging back when getting back at full speed (however slow that may be) could have prevented the goal. Pathetic really.

If you haven't seen the game, all you need to know is that Arsenal were incredibly lucky to only be 4-0 down after 20 minutes - Suarez hit a post and Toure missed an open goal on the rebound. Sturridge missed another pretty easy chance. In the second half Sterling and Henderson both missed great chances too. No exaggeration to say it could have been 8 or 9.

Arsenal/United on Wednesday could be a very strange atmosphere. Both teams fully expecting to lose.

He wouldnt be singled out if he wasn't signed for £42m, but for that money people are entitled to ask why he didnt look arsed during the whole game. He is a match winner and on occasion this season he has been a passenger.

I do agree though that pretty much the whole side was terrible bar the players mentioned though. BFG was very bizaree as he has been awesome this season up to now.

I don't plan on watching it! I heard it could have been even worse, so maybe we got away with it a bit. We really do miss Flamini in games like that...at least he is back at the weekend.

To be fair, the team has won nothing for 9 years and the fans pay the highest ticket prices in the world. I too have lived there and nothing infuriates me more than the cunts who leave every game early to beat the tube rush or leave when we are a couple of goals down.

Yes, we do have some twats as fans but so does every club. Look at the reaction United fans are making at the moment. They have been the most successful side for 20+ years and the first season they are not in contention they are calling for the manager to be sacked. Wenger has had far more patience from a large section of our fanbase.

United fans aren't calling for Moyes to be sacked (well, bar the odd one). In fact the general feeling is that United fans are being very supportive where fans of other teams would be losing their minds. I don't think United have been roundly booed off at any point this season have they? Our fans boo if we go in at half-time 0-0, pretty much every time it happens.

Yeah but at least Man Utd fans aren't racist. My mate said he heard monkey chants down the Emirates the other day when Cameron Jerome skied a volley over the bar.

Have a look on football365 mailbox or listen to talksport or 606 - they are absolutely all over him to go. Granted, it might be different at the ground itself, but there are a lot who want him out.

NatureBoy, met up with my two Arsenal mates I met on holiday last year. Good crack with them like I did at your place. Keep on saying at the home games there's no passion from the fans.

Looking forward to the FA cup game.

Yeah but these are the nutters. The idiots are always the loudest (said the man with 122,000 posts), they don't give a true representation of the general feeling. Someone who thinks that United are plodding along ok, could be doing better but could be doing worse, isn't going to get on the radio.

Did you get a ticket for this weekend?

If you did, dont buy food in the ground - complete ripoff. There are some good restaurants on Holloway Road or Highbury Corner you get something good.

I bet you are looking forward to it! Hope it is closer this time, you boys are on great form.

Yeah, the home games arent the same - especially the bigger ones as ordinary fans are priced out.

I checked and I am 44,996 on the season ticket waiting list - I doubt I would even take it but it does show the popularity.

TalkSport is genuinely scary for the people they allow to be broadcast to the nation. It is hard to come to terms with the fact that these people actually are part of our country.

I honestly cannot listen to it - I had to not long ago because it was the only place airing the Spurs/Newcastle game, and it was so bad it was infuriating. Transparent listener-baiting by the presenters, just saying any old controversial shite in the knowledge that the idiots will call in to rant at length for just 50p a minute. Their phone rates are more of a tax on the poor than the lottery.

No didn't get a ticket still hoping to get a ticket.

I remember getting something from Highbury Corner in November but I remember getting a sausage roll and a beer at the ground obviously at a ridiculous price.

If you have a bit of time theres a nice pizza place right by Highbury and Islington station.

The one opposite the garage, other side of the road - I forget the name for some reason. Saw Dara O'Briene in there once as well.

You can get a massive pizza there for 7 or 8 quid, always good then pop down to the Bailey (thats a gooner pub Chris Scott, so don't go there).

Just go to the Library and sip on a pale ale. Only two minutes walk away.

Well I stand outside it generally and only go when weather is good - was chatting to Charlie George there once during the North London derby which was surreal.

Highbury Tavern is also good but a bit of a walk.

I know I've banged on about him this season and but Jordan Henderson was quality on Saturday.

Given the contributions of some of our attacking players.......but for me, Henderson is my player of the season so far. Indispensable, dedicated, oozes team spirit and togetherness, does all the little things superbly, never once a complaint or word back to the manager (or at least not that we've seen at home), I could go on and on. Just needs to work on his finishing and chip in with more goals. He's certainly got into the positions this season.

Can't think of another player in the PL who has improved to the degree that he has and forced such a swing of public opinion in his favour over the past eighteen months. He's becoming an excellent player, working with Rodgers has helped him to improve his game in almost every area. If he can just improve his finishing and chip in with a few more goals I think he could really become a top player. He defiantly should be on the plane to Brazil.

Weirdly he got the lowest average marks (6.2) out of ten by Liverpool fans in the Echo on monday.

Hes nowhere near as bad as people make out. Just seems like a solid top fight player to me though.
