I'm not embarrassed by any of them. Which makes sense, since everything I like must by definition be awesome. Now, you may say, "But Dan, ABBA's 'Fernando' isn't awesome." But see, it is. And thus, I am not embarrassed by it.

Roxette

Aqua - Cartoon Heroes

Hanson - Penny and Me
Hanson - Mmmbop
Hanson - Strong Enough to Break

Hanson in general.

Mmmbop is a definate. Penny & Me is marginal, can go either way as acceptable or embarrising. Strong Enough To Break, however, is a great song. Good arrangement and nice lyrics. Definately the direction those guys should go if they continue to write.

As for me? It use to be "A Thousand Miles" by Venessa Carlton, but recently I began to hate that song as well.

I don't think I'm embarrassed by anything I listen to anymore. As I was telling one of my student employees the other day when we were in the shop and I had my Ipod hooked up to some speakers and on random, I've gotten to the age where I fucking listen to what I wanna listen to. I don't have to worry about a niche of friends thinking I'm selling out because I listen to a different kind of music that they do.

I'm not really embarrassed by anything I listen to. For a metalhead, I do get a lot of shit for listening to stuff such as:

Spice Girls (Hey, I grew up in the 90s, I must love them)
Robbie Williams
Kylie

Even though I know it's shitty pop, I don't hide the fact I like them. Everyone has their guilty pleasures, and they're mine.
Hell, I'd rather listen to pure pop than poser wannabe nu-metal shit or whatever.

Why are you embarassed to like Cold by Crossfade? Great vocal harmony, mixture of electric and acoustic, hard rock roots but nothing too heavy and its a generally powerful song that the listener can empathize with. We've all been in a situation like that at one point or another.

It just doesn't fit what usually goes in rotation in my listening circle. That and specifically around where I am, that song got the shit played out of it. It's not a matter of the substance of the song, which I like. It's a matter of everyone knows what I typically listen to, and they know how hard I am on more recent mainstream rock, and they scratch their heads. Unfortunately, I can't give them a reason why I shouldn't be embarrassed to like it.

I'm embarrassed to own all three Disturbed albums. I know they suck, but I still love them. I'm not sure why.

I'm kind of embarrassed about liking Axel Rudi Pell, but that's embarrassing only because he slips lyrics in about rainbows from time to time. I guess the guy really likes his rainbows. :nono:

I don't ever listen to them anymore, but I'm a little embarrassed for having a soft spot for ICP. They're dumb, they're untalented, their shameless "collect 'em all!" record sales and merchandising mentality is is probably only second to KISS (seriously...they actually told their fans to go out and buy a second copy of one of their albums, and give it to someone who had never heard their music), and must of their humor isn't really all that funny to me anymore. But I still don't hate them, or really even dislike them overall. It's been years since I've listened to any of the albums of theirs I own, yet I've never and will never make plans to sell those albums. Strange, huh? :$

I don't tend to be embarassed about any of my music, really. Though, on my mp3 player I have quite a lot of trance for the gym, and if I'm on a bus or something I'll skip past all that because I feel like a bit of a wanker listening to that sort of thing on headphones if I'm inactive. :dunno:

Did a search on this and was surprised I didnt find a similar thread. Basically just post some songs here that are your guilty pleasures.
I got this idea earlier when I was listening to "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys. Right now I cant get it out of my head. I know it was big back then but its still very cheesy, the music, the video, everything yet its still so catchy.
So yeah, "Everybody" by The Backstreet Boys.

EDIT.
Obviously I dont know how to search...

I love that song, too. The video is awesome, and it's a catchy and oddly badass pop song in some weird way, in my mind. It's probably the only Backstreet Boys song I really dig, though.
I like a few Britney Spears tunes ("Sometimes", "Stronger", "Lucky" is probably my favorite, "Crazy"...basically stuff from before she became overly slutty and then a nutcase).
I'm also not sure if I actually like any Christina Aguilera songs or not, but my wife is a big fan and plays her stuff all the time, so they're frequently in my head and I find myself singing them and not really being bothered by it, so I might actually like some of her stuff.

"Unforgiven II" is probably my Metallica choice, because there's really little if any reason to actually like that song, yet I do anyway.

I'm glad that wasn't a musical trend that caught on, though. I'd hate to have seen every big rock-ish band of that era going back to the well to essentially just re-do one of their bigger earlier hits..."Second Champagne Supernova", "Jeremy Hasn't Shut Up Yet", "Still Just A Girl", "More Sex And Candy", "Say It Ain't So Again"...yeah, could have been a trainwreck.

Unforgiven II is a song that I have good memories associated with, SO I WILL LIKE THE SONG OK :)

It is a catchy little pop metal song though.

My friends and I sing along to songs like that when we drive because we're goofy. See You Again by Miley Cyrus is a staple of ours.

I think that's the one my girlfriend is currently obsessed with. I put up a massive stink when she puts that awful CD on, but I gotta admit, I found myself somewhat in to that one song. Not good by any means, just catchy as shit.

I gotta echo the statements Wedge made a couple years ago in here. I just don't give a shit for the most part now. The only stuff anyone would make me feel embarassed about is shit my friends are too closed minded to listen to. "You like Morrissey? How could a person like me care for you
Why do I bother? When you're not the one for me
OOO-oooo-OOO-oo Is enough enough
I SAW THE SIGN
AND IT OPENED UP MY EYES I SAW THE SIGN
LOVE IS DEMA-ANDING WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING
I SAW THE SIGN
AND IT OPENED UP MY EYES I saw the sign
No one's gonna drag you up, to get into the light where you belong
Under the pale moon, so many years I've wondered
Who you are, how can a person like you bring me joy
Under the pale moon where I. See. A lot of. STAAARS
I saw the sign, it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
Love is demanding, without understanding
Yeah I saw the sign, it opened up my eyes I saw the sign
No one's gonna drag you up to get into the light where you belong...

Actually the basic chord progression of "We Built This City" is pretty good. I think Bon Iver could do a downtempo cover of that song and we'd all be perfectly happy with the results.

RockOverBoston
August 31st, 2008, 12:08 PM
For the sake of this "argument", I'm going to pretend that you were serious with the above statement.

Basic chord progression is a fair and accurate description, heavy on the basic. Strip away all of the excessive 80's synthization and stereotypical guitar solo, and you've got one really, really quiet song.
We'll get around to the lyrics in a bit...

That absolute piece of shit was written by outside songwriters (none of whom had anything whatsoever to do with building the San Francisco rock scene), most notably Bernie Taupin, most famous for being the longtime collaborator of Elton John, and Peter Wolf, most famous for being the lead singer of the J. Geils Band...Wolf later admitted that the song was never meant to be taken seriously, much less recorded, and was written in a "cocaine and alcohol fueled haze". Grace Slick, (someone who actually did have something to do with building the San Francisco rock scene) who has since frequently referred to "City" as "one of the worst/stupidest songs ever written", agreed to perform it solely because a.) she herself was living in a cocaine and alcohol fueled haze in the mid-80's, b.) she was convinced it'd push longtime collaborator/ex-lover Paul Kantner out of the group for good, and c.) Mickey Thomas, the historically craptastic other lead singer of Starship, was so enthusiastic about it.

The song actually caused Paul Kantner, the co-leader of Starship and the only other remaining Jefferson Airplaner, to leave the group before Starship recorded it, calling it "detestable, embarrasing garbage". With Kantner gone, the band was effectively forced to change their name from Jefferson Starship to Starship. From there, nothing was ever truly the same...

OK, so far, we've got one person who built the H-A music scene (and 4 or 5 who didn't) signed on to perform a song about how they all built San Francisco on rock and roll, which effectively ran one of said architects out of the band, written by 4 people who a.) aren't them, b.) didn't, and c.) didn't mean for the song to be taken seriously in the first place.

The precipise of said song is an anti-corporate stance against the homoginization and commercialism of 80's rock music. I ask you, in all seriousness, have you ever heard a more generic, commercialized song in your entire life? When Blender placed it atop its "Worst Songs Ever" list, the author took it a step further than that, pointing out that as it turns out, "the song is a real reflection of what practically killed rock music in the 80's", then went on to describe it as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar". One would be hard-pressed to disagree with either statement.

"The outpouring of bile against this song was amazing. A few people claimed to be able to scientifically prove that We Built This City is the worst song ever. It really felt like we'd hit a nerve in the collective unconscious."

And those lyrics. Those historically awful lyrics...

"Marconi plays the mamba" -- Louis Marconi was the man who invented radio. A mamba is a snake. It's safe to assume that the lyric was meant to be "mambo", yet when all was said and done, it definitly wasn't. As such, they're effectively calling the man who invented radio a jerkoff. That'd be a better description of every DJ who ever played this song.

There are a few not-so-subtle references to the H-A scene, the Grateful Dead in particular. The Dead never did anything more overtly commercial than "Shakedown Street", which blows this piece of shit out of the water. There's also, for no explicable reason whatsoever, a lyrical tip of the cap to The Go-Gos. Uh, what?

That fucking chorus is just about as bad as it gets.

I'll close on a great quote. Bernie Taupin was asked what it was like to have written both the highest selling single of all time ("Candle In The Wind") and the worst song of all time..."I suppose it's kind of like being Tom Cruise that year that he was in both Cocktail and Rain Man."

I mean, even the songwriters and the involved artists acknowledge what a huge, steaming pile of shit this was. Sure, they laughed all the way to the bank (or more likely the cokeman), but in later years, they've all come to acknowledge and ask for forgiveness of their huge-ass musical sin.

You can't take it seriously, it's just a fun stupid 80s song with synthesizers and bad lyrics. Except all of those songs have redeeming qualities, and I'd actually go so far as to call some of them good songs -- I actually like all four of them to certain degrees.

It's not just one aspect that makes "We Built This City" a bad song, it's a combination of literally dozens of them.

None of those four 80's classics deserve comparison of any kind to arguably the worst song ever recorded.

My wife think sit's super. I watched the VMAs with her and heard/saw it there first, and now it's on our computer, and in my head, etc. It's got really stupid lyrics, but it's fun and catchy. I enjoy singing about my rock moves.

No, she's not married anymore, that's kind of what the new song's about, too.

Song's catchy as fuck, but every bit as cheesy and probably belongs on this list.

Yeah. He so obviously sucks lyrically. But, the way he rhymes is so hilariously entertaining you can't help but to like it.

I don't even know if anyone knows who Obi Best is. But, I'm not neccessarily embarassed to like the group. I'd just be somewhat embarassed to be caught at the red light jamming out to one of their songs. But they are awesome.

They know they aren't subtle and they know they aren't the best writers around. Though, for two guys who have to come up with a half hour cartoon in SIX DAYS, I think they do a remarkable job. Just skip the political ones and you'll enjoy the show.

That 'going under' song is probably the only song by them I can really stand, but I quite like that one. I saw part of their set @ Family Values a couple years ago when I won tickets off the radio. It was kinda lame that they were there at all cuz they were playin with bands like Hellyeah, Trivium, Droid, Bloodsimple, Korn, Atreyu.. and they didn't really fit in too well at all. Though, a good portion of the crowd was clearly there to only see them.

Evanescence is an awesome band. "Going Under" is definetely their best song. But "My Immortal", "Bring Me To Life", "Lithium", "Call Me When You're Sober", "All That I'm Living For", and "Sweet Sacrifice".. all great songs, too.
