It's a sketch show and unlike Peep Show, they have written it.

But yes, Peep Show is immense.

Peep Show is class, quality throughout.

The bit where Jez goes for the interview at Mark's work, and to avoid getting the job pulls a spazzy face at the woman. Brilliant. Needs to be seen to be appreciated.

American bird, Nancy, in series 1 is niceness it must be said.

Series 3 finale was pant destroyingly funny too. Most of it needs to be seen yeah, I find myself laughing at mundane things Mark says simply because of his voice and face.

Mark: Did you ever appeal about your degree Jeremy?

Jeremy: Who cares about that shit? I didn't go to University to get a degree.

Mark: No, of course. Anyway no use regretting the past, I wish I'd done Ancient History but..

Jeremy: I thought you did do Ancient History?

Mark: I did Business Studies Jeremy.....for three years.

Jeremy's Brain: I could tell him thats all ancient history now, but he probably wouldn't like that joke.

Jeremy: Oh well, that's all ancient history now!

Now, I know, Liz, there's no proof for Jesus, but then there's no proof for lots of things, like science or the stock market and we believe in them. Look, what I'm trying to say is that if I was dying and I decided that even though I'd never particularly been into, say, Enya before but that now I really, really was into Enya and that in fact, I thought Enya was great and that Enya died for our sins and I wanted an Enya themed funeral with pictures of Enya and lots and lots of mentions of Enya, then I think it would be a bit bloody rich for my sister to ban all mention of Enya from my funeral. Its funny when Jez is shagging Mark's sister and she says "TicketyBoo", and he is thinking to himself, "oh my god, i'm shagging Mark"

Thats what makes this show so great the fact that you can hear them thinking, and the fact the show captures like the totally odd shit you are thinking in your head but dont dare speak it is what make it.

I've been a long-time fan of this. I've mentioned before on here several times that one of my favourite pieces of comedy ever written is in that job interview where Jez just comes out with the shittest banter ever heard:

Mark: This is low. This is REALLY low.

Jeremy: Yeah, well at least I don't fancy elves and pixies.

Mark: What does that mean? I LITERALLY have NO IDEA what that is supposed to mean.

"FLOSS IS BOSS! FLOSS IS BOSS!"

I love this show.

I'd like to thank BBC America for yanking this right when it was becoming my favorite thing on TV. Fucking assholes. How about ya stop showing home make over shows 18 hours a day?

Is that movie about weddings that the guy who plays Jeremy did with the chick from Spaced any good? It's coming out here in the states the week after next I believe and my chain probably won't be carrying it. So odds are I'll actually be paying for it. Worth the $8 or not?

turdpower
September 11th, 2006, 6:22 AM
I havn't seen it, but I plan on buying it.

Confetti: The film features an ensemble of comedy talents including Martin Freeman (The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, The Office), Jessica Stevenson (Spaced), Stephen Mangan (Green Wing), Felicity Montagu (I'm Alan Partridge), Robert Webb (Peep Show), award-winning comedian Jimmy Carr and Alison Steadman (Life Is Sweet).

A magazine runs a competition for the most original wedding, the ultimate prize being a house. The film follows the contestants in a fly-on-the-wall documentary style, akin to The Office. The script is entirely improvised.

I hope it is funnier than it sounds.

A pair of rivaling stage magicians are forced to confront their falling out over a guillotine mishap when they compete in a magic competition.

Jonathan Ross mentioned also that the film is about how they use to be a duo but fallout and throughout the film they try out different ways to kill each other.

Due out some time next year.

Cant Wait. But im guessing this means that its gonna take even longer for a new series of Peep Show to be produced.

As soon as the last episode of series 3 finished I thought "Hmmmm, I wonder when the new one starts? Hope it's soon."

Doesn't make it any less bollocks. It's not even subtle at all, which makes it even more shit - he doesn't gradually get them to say what he wants them to say as if his act is in any way believable, he just tells them to say the words he wants to hear. Forces them to say White Christmas or whatever. When he strays slightly from it (like the CRACK bit yesterday) it's a little bit better but mostly it's just absolutely shit.

Balls Of Steel, for the most part, is just a hateful, sneery little shite of a show. Made by cunts, presumably made FOR cunts - there's no irony involved in stuff like Neg, it's literally just "this guy acts like a total cunt to people, isn't he great!".

There are a few funny moments per show (the only idea that was funny was the bastard ref bit, but the others had a few redeemable moments - Neg's exagerrated speed smoking for example, and the silliness of Alex Zane's "Nice to see you...yes it is" catchphrase) but nowhere near enough to outweigh the overwhelmingly cuntiness of the show in general. Real lowest-common-denominator crap.

He had a good show a few years back where he staged spoof job interviews with real applicants, can't remember the name of the show now but he used a pseudonym..."The Richard SOMETHING Interviews" I think it was called. That was pretty funny, similar prank-style to a lot of Balls Of Steel but more good-natured. The only bit I can remember offhand was him presenting himself as a manager who encouraged people to avoid office-speak like 'think outside the box' to the extent that he encouraged people to 'think inside the box' - getting the interviewees to sit inside a box during their interview while answering the questions.

It wasn't great or anything but it was infinitely funny and more intelligent than this utter shite.

SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST EPISODE OF SERIES 5:

New titles include footage of Mark and Sophie crying at the wedding, which I found amusing.

The episode begins with Mark and Jeremy in the flat on the sofa, drinking champagne which has photos of Mark and Sophie on the bottle, presumably left over from the wedding. Mark is pretty miserable, but Jeremy insists that he gets back on the horse/starts dating again. It turns out that Jeremy was supposed to be going on a double-date, but the other bloke calls and cancels, so he invites Mark to come along instead.

The date is at the theatre. Mark brings along a copy of Natural History Museum Magazine (or something like that) as a social ‘prop’. To Mark’s surprise, it works to his advantage and the woman he’s there to meet notices it and asks him about it. He invites her to the Samurai exhibition advertised on the magazine’s cover and she accepts. He gets excited that he’d landed a second date almost immediately and begins to ponder whether she is ‘the one’.
Meanwhile, Jeremy is sitting at the bar with his date, who is actually someone he has been out with before fairly recently. She confesses that the only reason she invited him out was because she had to tell him that she went to the clinic and found out she has Chlamydia. Jeremy isn’t too bothered by this fact once she’s told him its symptom-less.
They go into the theatre and Jeremy and Mark whisper to each other amid multiple shushes that there’s hours to go and Jeremy says he’s leaving because he’s bored. He then leaves without Mark or his date, to walk home alone. On the way he feels happy, as if he has ‘time travelled’ and he gives his theatre ticket to a hobo lying in the street because he could still use it to get into the second half, but Jeremy warns him that it’s ‘shit’.

We cut to later when Mark gets back, happy about how well the evening went, only to find the front door open and the flat in a mess. Jeremy comes out of his room and Mark asks him if they’ve been burgled. Jeremy says he reckons so, but said he didn’t report it because he didn’t know whether he had to do it online or not. They’d taken a lot of Mark’s electronic stuff and the play station, and he’s particularly annoyed about losing his PS2 memory card because of ‘120 hours of quality ‘me time’ on Medal of Honour’ He goes into the bathroom and thinks that the burglar has ‘done a shit’ until Jeremy admits that it was him.

Jeremy takes Big Suze out to a wine bar in order to tell her he has Chlamydia and that she might want to get checked, but before he can tell her anything, she tells him that she had Johnson were over (He’s looking for more subservient women on the internet). Jeremy immediately sees he has an open with Suze and so when she asks him what it was he wanted to tell her, he says that he is just really positive about the war in Iraq. He begrudgingly spends £45 on a bottle of wine (I think this is to foreshadow money troubles for Jez in a later episode). He rationalises not telling Big Suze about the Chlamydia because ‘nobody minds the invisible man at the table’.

Mark is waiting for his date at a restaurant/bar, and she is three quarters of an hour late. He realises he’s probably been stood up (not before wondering if she’d died) and makes his way home. On the way though, he bumps into his date who is riding past on a bicycle. She tells him that her phone went missing, that she was really sorry and so Mark decides to believe her because she might be ’the one’. He invites her up to his flat because it is nearby. They go up, and the front door is wide open again, they go in and before them is a youth standing still holding a DVD player. The youth puts it down and says that he was ’Just looking for Kenny’. Mark pushes the youth to the ground and sits on him, and calls the police. He is dismayed to hear that they’re going to be 45 minutes, so lets the youth up and they go into the living room and sit down.

Jeremy and Big Suze get back, and Mark is shocked to learn that he hadn’t told Suze about the Chlamydia yet. Jeremy tries to ‘connect’ with the youth and fails. Big Suze, completely out of character (and the worst part of the episode for me) suggests that they burn him with cigarettes. They decide to put the youth out on the balcony in the rain so Jez can relax with Big Suze. The youth however, uses his phone and calls ‘all his mates’ to come over to rescue him. Mark takes his date into his bedroom. While Mark has an awkward moment with his date comparing their respective foot sizes, the youth’s friends arrive and start banging on the front door and make a lot of racket. Jeremy gets tired of it and so clandestinely lets the youth out on the condition that he leaves them alone and doesn’t burgle them ever again. When Jeremy goes to shut the front door behind him, the youth, now backed up with several friends, puts his foot in the door and tells his mates that they’ve got a nice TV. Mark hears the commotion as the youths take the TV, so leaves his room. He questions Jeremy about why he is just letting this happen, but Jeremy doesn’t seem too bothered, so out of spite, Mark pops his head around Jeremy’s bedroom door and tells Big Suze that Jeremy has an STD. She gets all upset and storms out, much like last year when Jeremy suggested pimping her out to Johnson (I am hoping that this is not the last we’ll see of her in series 5).

Jeremy tries to leave, but Mark won’t let him. Jeremy doesn’t think Mark can overpower him. Mark lays his arm on Jez, and Jeremy finds it funny that Mark is trying to ‘fight’ him. Mark subdues Jeremy to the ground because all the while Jeremy is completely bemused that Mark had stood up to him and so doesn’t actually do any fighting back. It is at this point Mark’s date, who has been witness to the evening’s craziness, tells Mark that she’d ‘had enough’ and is going to leave. Mark tells her she shouldn’t leave because she might be ‘the one’ and so she tells him that he’s weird, and Jeremy agrees with her. Mark then tells Jeremy to fuck off. The end.

Also some other stuff from a Q&A session with Mitchell and Webb, plus producer Phil Clarke:

Will the Peep Show scripts ever be published?
Yes. Probably later on this year, with scripts for all 5 seasons. The writers said that some scripts would be annotated and that there will be a few versions of the same episode to show the writer's revisions.

How did Peep Show get started?
It began as an idea for 2 men sitting watching the TV in 1st person view and commenting on what they're watching. Neither man would ever be seen, it would always be facing the TV watching the clips. They made a 15 minute short of this idea with Mitchell and Webb, and during filming they decided to change the camera to face each actor as they made their comments. Webb said that he had thought that he was just going to be doing voice-over work reading from the script and so once the decision was made that the characters would be seen, he was annoyed that he had lots of lines to learn at short notice.

The writers and production crew soon discovered that the costs for some the clips they wanted to include would have been so phenomenally expensive to clear, it made it extremely difficult for them to write jokes based on clips if they never knew if they'd be allowed to use them.

So they made the decision to open it up 'around the flat' and to follow the characters around their daily lives. Part of the original plan was to have more characters give internal monologues, like Sophie, Toni and Superhans. (They didn't explain why that idea was dropped.) They said the main reason the show got commissioned for a full first series was because of the interplay between Mitchell and Webb, and that without them in the leads, there probably wouldn't have been a commission.

Could Peep Show go on forever?
They said they would keep doing it for as long as there is an audience and channel 4 lets them. They said part of the reason the show has been allowed to continue is because despite low viewing figures, strong DVD sales, critical praise and a small but loyal fan base of around 1.2 million people has kept the show alive (Mitchell said that if 1.2 million people all died in the same room that it would be a 'big deal'). Webb also mentioned that the show has a large following of people who download the show on the internet, and after a bit of a glare from the CH4 comedy commissioner he added...'using 4OD'.

Mitchell said that it's not often that you get to be in a successful sitcom, let alone a funny one, and that it's something to be held onto. They said they like the idea of following the characters into their thirties and past the point where it's deemed acceptable for two grown men to still be living together in a flat. Mitchell joked that if left to continue indefinitely that it would be funny to see Mark as Jeremy as old men still living the same way.

What happened to the American remake?
Fox made an American written pilot which nobody liked, and it's likely that no one will ever see it. Lesser known US channel Spike TV however has shown interest and Armstrong and Bain have been invited to write a new pilot. They said that success would rest largely on them finding the right people to play the two leads, which could take some times they'd need to exhibit a similar chemistry to Mitchell and Webb, which they felt was rare in America.

How much of it is based on the writer's/actors own experiences?
Mitchell said that probably the only thing in the entire series which he based on his own thoughts/experience was when he found a mark on his arm and because he didn't then know what ringworm really was, he thought it was ringworm simply because it was ring-shaped.

What's going on with Mitchell and Webb's planned sitcom for the BBC?
They didn't say much in case they got in trouble, except that it's going to be studio-based with an audience, and that they want their characters to be as far removed from Mark and Jeremy as possible.

How do they feel about the less than stellar reception of Magicians?
The writers and the actors all feel like it was a decent film, but they said if it has taught them anything, it's that making films 'isn't easy'. They said that it hasn't put them off trying again.

What are the writer's\actor's favorite sitcoms?
Armstrong and Bain both mentioned that they're currently big fans of Pulling and the IT Crowd. They actually said they were a little bit envious of the writers of Pulling. (They mentioned a few more but I can't remember them all, sorry)

Both Mitchell and Webb said that they don't watch too much of any new British comedy, particularly Mitchell who said that he can't watch it at all really, because it reminds him of work so much that he can't enjoy it for what it is. Webb said he liked older sitcoms from the seventies/eighties, especially Fawlty Towers, and that he was of course a big fan of the Simpsons. Mitchell pointed out that maybe the Simspons doesn't count as a sitcom. He then added that he can watch American sitcoms 'forever'.

How important do the writers feel the 'gimmick' of filming from the character's POV is?
The writers said that they recognize and understand why it could be seen as just a gimmick, but they said that's what they feel gives the show it's individuality as it's the POV style that facilitates the inner monologues that so much of the comedy comes from. They felt the show wouldn't have seemed so 'original' if they'd kept the inner monologues, but without using POV. Mitchell jokingly added that without the POV style the show is just a low brow rip-off of Men Behaving Badly.

Does Mitchell and Webb's writing style differ from Armstrong and Bain's?
Bain and Arstrong say that after discussing and outlining the plot and jokes, they both individually write a first draft each, then 'swap' and re-write the other's script into a second draft, and keep doing this until they have whittled it down into a merged version they both agree on, then begin tweaking that. Webb said that when he and Mitchell write, it's akin to when the Fonz looks in the mirror to comb his hair, but then decides not to touch anything, happy with the way it already is (worryingly I didn't know how much he actually was joking when he said this).

What do Mitchell and Webb's consider the funniest moments on the show?
Not the best of choices I feel, but both actor's responses appear to be based on how much fun they had on the day shooting. Webb said that for him it was 'eating the dog' and for Mitchell it was the wedding episode when Jeremy pisses himself, because he couldn't stop laughing as the device they'd used for the effect made it look so real.

Which character is the most tragic? Mark or Jeremy?
Probably Mark. Jeremy has the knack of rationalizing anything that goes wrong for him as still having gone 'his way', whereas Mark sees his failures as continuing proof of his inadequacy.

What's in store for the rest of season 5?
- Mark will do more dating (maybe we will see April again...?)

- Jeremy's Mum comes to stay, and the writers said that seeing her will cast more light on why Jeremy turned out the way he did

- We find out how Jeremy has been paying his way all these years despite not having a job

- Jeremy and Superhans play their first real gig, but it's not what we'd expect

- Sophie has 'a bit of a breakdown' and goes 'mental'

Near the end of the Q&A they did mention that a lot of abandoned stuff from season 4 has been carried over into 5. While talking about this point, they mentioned their writing and drafting process again and then interestingly one of those things that popped out was Johnson killing himself, as the writer's felt it was funny that somebody like Jonson was 'secretly tormented' all along, but then they suddenly clammed up as if they might have said too much. I dunno if this will actually happen though, but as you'll see in the 1st episode back we do learn that it's over with Big Suze, so (theory time) maybe this relationship ending is what pushes him over the edge?

From Zoo this week, random jokes and lines from the new series of Peep Show:

M: I'm so unhappy. I wonder if anyone has ever been this unhappy while drinking Champagne?

Big Suze: This is quite a weird date Jeremy. It's even weirder than when you took me to Laser Quest and tried to hump me in the dark.

J: Mark, double date for tonight?
M: No. What's she like? Is she sexy?
J: Mark, beggers can't be choosers; she's an actual woman.

J: We might need to untape the DVD and video and TV and Sky remotes...
M: The Megatron? But... No!
J: It smells wrong. The Megatron doesn't say "urban freewheelers". It says, "sofa masturbators".

M: I can't believe Jeremy left me to soak up the bad feeling like a hate sponge.

J: Chlamydia is symptonless? Then what's the biggie? I mean, no one cares if the invisible man comes to dinner.

J: [tasing an expensive wine] Oh this is fantastic! This is wine, yeah. Obviously it's not really delicious like hot chocolate or coke but for wine, it's brilliant.

J: [to a burglar] So, what's going on for you, man?
M: Oh for God's sake, Jeremy, don't try to bond.
J: Did you run away from home? Are you a rent boy and everything?

J: Paula's cool; she's cultural. We're going to see a play tonight.
M: A play?
J: I know but relax; it's all different now. They've moved on; they use proper actors. You know, Americans and people off the telly. And they're all based on films, so it's fine.

[whispering during a play]
M: if this on television no one would be watching.
Jez. Oh God! We could be watching television.

M: I can't believe coming here has cost more than a film.
J: I've got heat on DVD at home. We're watching this when for less money we could be watching Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
M: I'm going to pretend to be watching heat.

M: The big date and she's late. Great, I'm getting pitying smiles. Still, got the phone. You're never alone with a phone. Why isn't she texting? That's what mobiles are for. So everyone can be linked and to boost the GDP by telling each other. Maybe she's dead? Bereaved is better than stood up.

Its only two episodes in. The content isnt really any different than normal. Some kid hero worshipping Jez and Super Hans looking for blowies, with Mark having awkward relations is pretty much par for the course for Peep Show since season 1.

The actual line was 'But in fact, I've just come all in my pants". You only missed the 'all', but it was that along with the little skip he did out of the door that made me laugh all through the advert breaks.

I wasn't sure if he'd cummed or not, just from laughing at half the stuff he said in the cupboard. My mate spotted his cummy trousers straight away.

Genius.

I loved it, not only have the last two weeks seen a return to normal Peep Show, I think last night's saw the return of the proper Johnson.

And the 'dry' humping scene was as horny as fuck.

Best bit for me, simply because of the smug grin he gives, like he's 'won' by making them think he's pissed himself.

Jeff's grin is one of my favoutire features of Peep Show. It seem's to always deliver, series 2 was especially evident of this.

Loved last nights episode though. The conversation between Jez and Hans while listening to that kid's music was brilliant.

Peep Show was genius as usual. Anybody else see that new show on E4, The In-Betweeners? Watched the first episode from last weel on On Demand earlier, think it's on Thursday nights normally. Promising show.

Mark's incessant comparing of the Sophie situation to an election campaign when returning to work was thoroughly amusing. Other than that and the smug grin I mentioned earlier, a few good laughs but nothing great. And the sucking off stuff is getting really boring now. WHO WILL SUPERHANS SUCK OFF/GET SUCKED OFF BY NEXT WEEK?

Only "the bad thing" from series 1.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

The only other Superhans cock moment I can think of was with the Orgozoid in Series 4, but that's it.

I thought the whole sucking off part of the story was brilliant. Just makes Hans look like even more of a tit.

Hulkamaniac

Sucking off in general is a key theme that runs throughout the whole show. Jez having to suck off the Orgazoid and suchlike in the last season. Its funny in how unusual it is and it always will be. Two completely straight men will almost happily suck another man off, such each other off or allow themselves to be sucked off, really gives you a solid insight into their kinds of characters.

There were a couple of blinding parts of the episode today. It was blatantly still finding its feet, but the Jewish looking lad attempting full-body sex and the lad snapping at the whole 'friend' stuff were winners.

The Inbetweeners is getting terrible views, is it worth a go then?

Mik, I wouldn't call Jez 'completely straight' at all, isn't he a closet bisexual? He's certainly bi although he tries to deny it even to himself ('even I'VE slept with more men than her, and I'm basically straight')...and he's not even really closet.

Jeremy runs out of money and descends into a world of hunger, homelessness and criminality. Meanwhile, Mark needs to find himself a girlfriend before his birthday party.

I can sense a "She's the one" theme going to be in every episode.

I was worried by the opening ten minutes, but it then picked up and ended up fantastically with Mark so low it was painful.

I think it's probably past it's best for good now. I don't mean that in a cynical internetty kind of way, it's just logical based on the last couple of series. Most of the characters are parodies of themselves now, every episode of the current series has been roughly the same (Mark tries to get a bird and fucks it up while Jez fucks around in the background without a storyline) and they don't seem to know what to do with Jez any more at all. It's still enjoyable because the writing is so good (although the recurring dick references are overdone) and that will keep it at least watchable, but the storylines aren't up to it now.

Worst. And noticeably not Bain and Armstrong's writing.

Still some great bits though. The baby line was great, so was Mark's thought about saying something that only he would find funny (forget the exact quote and I'm not going to butcher it with paraphrasing). The MASSIVE TWAT line and the lead-in to it was good as well, even if it was obvious.

Last night I was pissed from a day on the lash at the cricket. Was on the train back to Blackburn and my mum texted me asking how the day was etc. I replied with...

Great use of a classic quote. :D
