A US woman found after being abducted as a girl in 1991 gave birth to two children fathered by her alleged kidnapper, police say.
Jaycee Lee Dugard and the children, aged 11 and 15, were kept in a "hidden backyard within a backyard".
Alleged kidnapper Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 54, are being held in custody in California.
DNA tests are being done to establish Ms Dugard's identity, but meanwhile she has been reunited with her mother.
Ms Dugard disappeared in 1991, aged 11, from outside her Lake Tahoe home, apparently taken by two people.
El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar she had lived with the couple, isolated from view at a property in Antioch near San Francisco since the kidnapping.
"The tents and outbuildings in the backyard were placed in a strategic arrangement to inhibit outside viewing and to isolate the victims from outside contact."
The three spent "most of their lives" there, he said, adding that they had never been to school or seen a doctor.
Their identities were revealed after Mr Garrido was spotted by police at the University of California Berkeley campus with the two young children.
He raised suspicions because as a registered sex offender he was not allowed to be with young children.
Phillip Garrido has a conviction for rape and was paroled in 1999, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
He was called in by his parole officer for questioning, and brought the two children and a young woman he called Alissa with him.
During questioning he revealed that Alissa was actually Ms Dugard. She also confirmed her identity to police.
At the Antioch property, there was also a vehicle hidden in the backyard which matched the vehicle originally described at the time of the abduction, Mr Kollar said.
"It's a pretty spectacular story just to find someone like that. Someone we assumed was dead," said Bill Clark, a senior prosecutor in El Dorado County.
Jimmie Lee, a local police spokesman, said Mr Garrido was also being held for investigation of rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sexual penetration.
Under suspicion
As news spread of Ms Dugard's apparent re-appearance, her stepfather Carl Probyn told ABC News in the US that her family was now convinced she was coming back to them.
"I had personally given up hope," he said, saying that he just wanted to find the people responsible.
Mr Probyn was watching on 10 June 1991, as the young girl was apparently taken away by two unidentified people.
The incident occurred as she was walking from her home to a school bus stop in the southern Lake Tahoe town of Meyers.
Her stepfather - who initially came under suspicion in her disappearance and is now estranged from Ms Dugard's mother - has described how a stranger drove up and grabbed Ms Dugard, bundling her into a grey car even as she tried to resist by kicking and screaming.
Mr Probyn believed a man and woman were in the vehicle. Despite several false reports of sightings in the intervening years, Ms Dugard was never seen again.
"She sounds like she's okay," he said.
"She had a conversation with my wife and she remembers things. I hope she's been well treated this entire 18 years."
"To have this happen where we get her back alive, and where she remembers things from the past, and to have people in custody is a triple win," he told the Sacramento Bee newspaper.

Sadly from what I have read the girl is showing a bit of stockholm syndrome sadly.

In almost his first words of a 10-minute telephone interview from jail with KCRA channel in California, Phillip Garrido was eager to paint his situation as one of redemption.
Mr Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy, 54, are being held in custody in California after the discovery that Jaycee Lee Dugard, who went missing at the age of 11, was alive and had been living in the Garridos' backyard for 18 years.
It emerged that Mr Garrido had fathered two girls with Ms Dugard, the first when she was 14.
Ms Dugard's identity was revealed after Mr Garrido brought her and the two children, now 11 and 15, to an interview with a parole officer. The convicted sex offender had been ordered to attend the interview after being seen in public with the two girls by police officers.
'Very serious'
Mr Garrido, who telephoned KCRA after they requested an interview with him, said he had "not talked with a lawyer yet", but wanted to prepare the media for a story that would make "world news".
Mr Garrido's responses to the questions were often rambling.

'I have no desire to hold back'
He repeatedly referred to a tranche of documents that he had left with the FBI in San Francisco - urging the media to read them.
"These are for you, the media, they have an investigation in them and powerful witnesses concerning my situation. What you will have in your hands will take [sic] world news immediately," he said.
Mr Garrido was asked to talk about the abduction but said he needed to talk to a lawyer.
"I'm so sorry. I've no desire to hold back these things... I don't mean to disappoint you, but I have to do this in an orderly fashion," he said.
'Major trial'
Mr Garrido admitted he was in a "very serious situation", but again stressed the documents would be vital.

"They're going to be part of the trial because this is going to be a major trial," he said, adding that the law enforcement authorities were "really impressed" with the papers.
They would "explain something that humans have not understood well".
He added: "I tell you here's the story of what took place at this house and you're going to be absolutely impressed.


Psychologists say Ms Dugard could make a good recovery
"It's a disgusting thing that took place with me from the beginning. But I turned my life completely around," he said.
Mr Garrido became emotional only once, when asked if his tale was a "love story".
"No, no. It's a constructive story of turning a person's life around."
His voice faltering, he said: "Having those two girls - they slept in my arms every single night - from birth - I never kissed them, you have to take this a step at a time."
Mr Garrido then again referred to his trial, saying: "You're going to be in a state of shock when you see how many hundreds of thousands of people are going to be coming out of the woodwork to start testifying about something."
He was unclear on the nature of the testimony, but did say: "The federal government will end up being involved."
"Just read the documents."
Unearthly voices
In a blog that purports to have been written by Mr Garrido entitled "Voices Revealed" he writes that he will provide a "wake-up call" that will "include the salvation of the entire world".
In the most recent entry, dating from 14 August, he writes: "The Creator has given me the ability to speak in the tongue of angels".
Calling himself "The Man Who Spoke With His Mind", the writer also refers to mind control and schizophrenia in several entries.
He posts links to empty blog sites entitled "Charging the angels with error" and "Exposed", and to a website called "God's Desire".
He also posts affidavits purportedly signed by people who have witnessed that: "Phillip Garrido [...] clearly demonstrated the ability to control sound with my mind [...] controlling a voice or set of voices that are unearthly in nature".
Part of the declaration includes phrases describing himself as "mature and intelligent" and not displaying "unsuitable, incoherent or improper cognitive behaviour".

The cops passed up one opportunity to find the girl. I haven't read the whole thing in depth but supposedly someone called about something suspicious and nothing was done.

It's amazing, the shit people do and get away with it. This guy looks like Phil Spector... just to add to the creepiness of it all.

The sex fiend who held a California girl captive for 18 years morphed Friday into the chief suspect in the unsolved murders of several local prostitutes, cops said.

Cops were searching the bungalow where Jaycee Lee Dugard was imprisoned for evidence that would link her accused kidnapper, Phillip Garrido, to the killings.

Several of the slain prostitutes were found near an industrial park where Garrido worked during the 1990's, said Capt. Daniel Terry of the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department.

"We may have missed an opportunity to have intervened earlier" and rescue Jaycee, Contra Costa Sheriff Warren Rupf admitted.

The unnamed deputy was dispatched to the Garridos' home in 1996 after a 911 caller reported that a "psychotic" Garrido had sexual addictions and erected tents in his back yard where children were living, Rupf said.

Instead of investigating, the deputy warned Garrido that the tents could be a code violation - and never checked out the shabby hovels where the psycho suspect was holding Jaycee and the daughters Garrido fathered with his captive.

"This is not an acceptable outcome," Rupf said. "I cannot change the course of events. We are beating ourselves up over this.

Earlier, the suspect's father told The Daily News that his son's brain was fried by LSD and that he is "out of his mind."

"He changed terribly. He started to do funny things," after hurting his head in a motorcycle accident at age 14, said Manuel Garrido of Brentwood, Ca.

Until that moment, Garrido was "the sweetest kid," he said.

An Internet blogger who claims he can speak to God and hear voices in peoples' heads, Garrido served 17 years in Leavenworth Prison in Kansas for taking a woman across state lines and raping her in a hotel room,
a relative of Garrido told The News.

Yup, only 16 years to go, before we get to see Maddie again. That brings hope to all. By hope I mean, rather than be at peace, being constantly raped for decades whilst being mentally and physically abused is a better outcome if it means we get to see her again.
